The officials didn't notice the play clock had run out before the kick. ND caught a lucky break - for once. It seemed they got every possible bad break you could imagine under Faust.
This was my junior year at Notre Dame. We’d resigned ourselves to losing this game and thought it could result in Gerry Faust getting fired. We had mixed feelings about the eventual victory.
A underachieving team for 5 forgettable years, no progress was ever made. A change had to be made, hiring Holtz changed the whole complexion of the team.
@@8avexp Still maybe the most baffling coaching hire in the history of major college football. More than Nebraska hiring Mike Riley or Arizona State hiring Herman Edwards. The #1 or #2 biggest program in America at the time (along with Alabama) hires a freaking high school coach?!
In fairness to Faust, I just don't think this was thought about as a strategy back then. Stanford also passed up the opportunity to run the clock down a few years before this in their game with Cal and...well...
Gerry Faust gave it everything he had at ND! Good guy, who handled himself with Class, Dignity and Honor. Go Irish!!
Harry Kalas was fantastic. RIP.....
Anybody know what channel this was broadcast on?

I remember Gerry Faust said there have been alot of great comebacks in notre dame history. This wasn't one of them
Two weeks later, Navy upset South Carolina, which was ranked #1 for the first and only time. South Carolina had rallied to beat ND in October.
There was some controversy as it appeared that the play clock expired on the FG

I am a Navy grad and was at the this game and I felt sick.

Hopefully you've checked out some of the ND yearbook films that I've posted from this era. I'm sure they'll bring back memories.
What a leg on Carney! And yes, Allen Pinkett was soooo fast.

The Gerry Faust Error. The man was way in over his head. ND never should have hired him.
coach Faust was such a fine gent and truly loved the university of Notre dame!
A fine and honest man, but lousy collegiate football coach.

@@pronkb000 You are so right. Forty four years later it stilll boggles the mind.
Why leave 14 seconds left
Faust's 4th season, all his recruits. Why not at least kill 5 or 6 more seconds on 2nd down and then kick it?
The very 1st word of your comment is the reason why.
@@cgh7337so Faust was the original Andy Reid? Horrible at clock management and clock strategy
