Thanks for watching! I want to explain why we turned off the house lights. The lights in the ceiling of our studio are special and diffused and we didn’t want people to think that we cheated with this set up by supplementing the Walmart lights with our studio lights.
For several years I have been using mono youngnuo lights to help with my SAD but they are dying. So in the black Friday sale in 22 I bought a 3 pack of P60C to replace them. I use a couple of magic arms & ball head adaptors to attach my lights to two Tiger Mic stands which I have added plates from dumbells to hold them down However, I have also replaced all my existing lightbulbs with B7C's & adapters to make them work with the much safer bayonet system. I am currently exploring whether to replace my kitchen florescent tube with either an aputure/amaran type tube or fitting Track lighting & using my spare B7C's I am watching you as I have been wanting to create doco content since before TH-cam But currently I am too ill to reliably do content creation but I am seeking to record my recovery back to health whilst setting up a content channel that has sufficient content in cold storage that I can publish regularly & reliably. So Along the way I have been picking up other aputure kit 2nd hand from ebay. Being Android based I am using a couple of Sony Xperia 1 v2/3 as cameras which were sold for parts but whose cameras worked & whose screens were good enough to be used. And I picked up 4 channel xoom recorder for sound & cheap head mounted camera both 2nd hand from ebay Can I also recommend watching the MarcusPix channel
@@annakissed3226 Good luck with all this, Anna. I hope you get to document this journey to share on your TH-cam channel. And I hope you make a full recovery. You've got a subscriber in me. :)
Great video! Here are a few other items from Walmart I have found useful in a pinch: spring clamps, clothespins, parchment paper, aluminum foil, folding tent poles, paint roller extension poles, paint roller frames, poster board, foam board, bed sheets, milk jugs and binder clips.
I went that lighting route when I started. FWIW some AC lights flicker with the wall power. So I'd recommend getting battery powered lights. Still run them plugged into the charger -- but because it's passing through the battery, it doesn't flicker. ;) Depends on your fps vs the wall voltage, of course. ;)
Legends! I've been wanting to buy a cinema camera, but this keeps reminding me that I haven't even really tapped into my current camera's full potential.
I honestly don't think I'll ever get tired of watching jerryrigged budget lighting setups. Really appreciate you guys didn't cheat by using C-stand and even turned off the house lights! Playing the pedant here, but having a quiet recording environment and blackout curtains seemed to be pretty important. I suppose that extra $35 could have at least brought in a blanket and/or some black trash bags 😉
Excellent. I've done a lot of trade shows where super and hardware stores saved the show. One thing you forgot at Walmart, crew snacks! Keep them boys happy. Thanks from Colorado.
This is one of my most favorite things you guys have done… loved the crazy looks everyone had when they first heard your plan. Love the creative stretch.
As a video producer for Walmart, I can say this is amazingly true! When we're filming inside a store, it's the world's largest prop/gear store to pick up stuff we need/lose/forget...thanks, I'm sharing this with everybody LOL
If you've got both subject and camera locked in position, having the second phone on a table in front of the subject - or in a shirt pocket - is a viable alternative. That saves you a few bucks on the makeshift boom mic set-up. You could leave houselights on if you unscrew the bulbs you don't need, but you do need the separation to hide the computational bokeh - it helps for subject separation, yes, but it's a telltale that you're using an iPhone, I'd have gone for a darker background, instead - the finished product still looks great, anyway!
Should have gotten a couple of white and black poster boards while at Walmart for bounce cards, cutters, negative fill. Still would keep under your budget. The things I always had around me my whole career were white foamcore boards, blackwrap foil, and gaff tape, and those things made some of my best work.
I was shooting a pilot for local tv and my helpers bailed last second-with all of my gear! Went to Walmart and pretty much did exactly what you see here. Thankfully I had an extra set of cheap mics and a Tascam recorder under the seat. iPhones are fantastic emergency backups, but they use variable frame rates-sync up external sound in post by using Audio Units instead of framerate, otherwise sync will drift wildly. And use ice in a ziplock bag to keep it from overheating while shooting.
This is what all my BTS looks like. I once used a milk box over my LED light with streaks of tape randomly stuck to create a nice texture on the wall haha.
Watching from Africa, been faithful to your channel. Learnt so much and always laugh when you say we shouldn't subscribe. 😄 God bless you for the constant videos.
That‘s crazy, when I was looking at the final edit part I suddenly realised that I didn't even notice that was actually the iphone shot, which I would normally find out somehow distracting if I was told it's in cinematic mode.
Shooot I’ve been a full-time filmmaker for 13 years and only had those Walmart lights for the last 13 years. I just recently got “pro” lights 4 months ago.
But that would have been cheating if we left them on. We didn’t buy them from Walmart and they are special diffused lights that look nicer than regular overhead lights
I can 100% relate to this video. We've bought an iphone for that fake shallow depth of field, but it was a disappointment especially around the head/hair areas, so I would probably add that blurry background in a post.
Very nice. If I may I would suggest that you add the following to your kit- paint poles(for boom, T bars etc.), black plastic table cloths( for flagging, negative fill), white plastic table cloths(for bounce, diffusion(LED lights only). I like the idea of make do with what you have or can afford. The imagination is the limit.
one thing that I think would've possibly given a little bit higher quality would've been using filmic pro since it allows you to control more camera settings, but overall ive been incredibly impressed with the video out of phones recently. There's also an app for android called motioncam which allows you to shoot in cinemadng raw which is insane. But yeah the only downside would be that you don't have lens control like with a regular camera, but phones nowadays come with different lenses so even that isnt much of an issue.
Lynne has never been so beautifully lit as in this episode (10:28). Okay, the main light should have been higher. But it gives her a completely different facial expression compared to all her other shots. Do we set our key light too high in rooms with windows?
Naive question but is the shallow DoF an iPhone post effect thing (the "cinematic mode" you mentioned maybe)? The background looks nice and blurry but I think it was doing weird things to her hair sometimes.
I call something practice if it appears on camera and the lights in our house ceiling are special since they are diffused with muslin. It would have been cheating too much if we kept them on.
Aluminium foil is a great way of controlling light spills - cheap, easy to get hold of and approved by Roger Deakins - what more do you need? Also, nice hat tip to Ryan Mickey - I also just saw his videos and think the potential for him is amazing.

What I learned from this video: If you have Lynne on set, you can get away without all the expensive gear! Nice job!
What I learned from this video: zip ties & duct tape are the most important items when shooting with a smartphone
And cardboard, don't forget cardboard
Yeap
You should always have zip ties
And gloves… TOOLS I have to have my TOOLS.
the thumbnail🤣 out of context it would be pretty brutal haha

Can you mention the uses of each items?
Lynn’s passion for Arizona really helped to distract me from this amateur production. Saved by Lynn yet again Epic Light Media.

this was insane.I cant imagine how much phone cameras will improve in the next 5 years

Indeed, cameras really are a black box (literally too)

That’s true a dark controlled room is important

Hey thanks!!! This video was fun to make

AMAZING! Great tips. Baking paper is also good for diffusing light. Also mirrors can be used to bounce light or foam boards.
The endings always get me LOL
thanks for this lighting setup tips, yeah, pretty much thats whats up.
Great job you guys! I started out using random lights from around the house when I first got into filmmaking too
Probably this is the best channel to learn about lighting. They makin it so easy.
Thanks!!!
This was so good. Helpful and entertaining 🎉
Glad you enjoyed it!
Skill and dedication!
Great video guys!
Because she said "beautiful" multiple times in the final...I think it's beautiful! 👍
you guys are so good, ill have to re-watch this later. lotta experience smooshed into a few minutes, thx for the reality check with g.a.s.
Love this type of “just make it work” content is awesome, thanks for sharing guys!
Hey thanks!!!!

Just goes to show that if you know the process you can get away with anything. Great job guys. Love the “out of the box” thinking😬
Thanks!!! Hahaha
Loved this video. I had no doubts you could make something great. This was awesome!
I hate that these guys make it look so easy! Great video once again

Skill and experience are the most important pieces of equipment
Had I not seen the BTS, I would have never known how 'on the cheap' this was done. Great work.
I was shooting a pilot for local tv and my helpers bailed last second-with all of my gear! Went to Walmart and pretty much did exactly what you see here. What I learned is that cinematic mode looks shite. Better to blur in post.
Good set plus good light (placement/ quality) will result good imagine.
This is what all my BTS looks like. I once used a milk box over my LED light with streaks of tape randomly stuck to create a nice texture on the wall haha.

I really liked the pacing of this video. I didn't get bored even after a 12 hour day at a concert
Very cool idea 🎉 wouldn't it be helpful to do some sort of book light, to reduce the harshness of lamps like this?
Shooot I’ve been a full-time filmmaker for 13 years and only had those Walmart lights for the last 13 years. I just recently got “pro” lights 4 months ago.
Same challenge but from Lowes/Home Depot. Feel like you could get an even better image for the same price. You could buy bead board etc from there
Good idea actually
Genius. Our Wallmart is called ASDA in the UK. Looks like Im going shopping!
Despite this “most important rule” of turning off the house lights, it looked just fine with them on.
But that would have been cheating if we left them on. We didn’t buy them from Walmart and they are special diffused lights that look nicer than regular overhead lights
what if i got lost at the airport, can i be bought at this Walmarts?
Great video man. This is proof that knowledge and skill trumps gear every time. Nice job!
This is a great exercise that many of us should do. So that when issues arise, we have options.
this is amazing ... how we can find the finale vidéo from interview look very good
Lots of lessons here and a great outcome. Not sure however that the client would have let it get this far if you showed up like this :)
I love the second iPhone as a boom mic hahahahha GREAT video
Love it! Take aways: Zip Ties, Duck Tape... and B Roll! lol Great job overall, fun to see these types of challenges.
Thanks!

well done! chops and people skills win every time.
"The phone stand will look professional" ..after buying the clothes hanger and shower curtain diffuser hahahah
Loved it. Thanks for putting this together!
The result is really good just held back by the weird DOF implementation in the iphone (awkward masking around the subject).
Stand is too short:. Put the feet on three adjacent chair seats. If the seat heights don't match, build them up with books. ;)
Lynne has never been so beautifully lit as in this episode (10:28). Okay, the main light should have been higher. But it gives her a completely different facial expression compared to all her other shots. Do we set our key light too high in rooms with windows?
5:35 i just know lynne would've loved a "STRIKING" first 😂
Never!!!
BBQ could give nice haze and beer bottles could cast nice reflection on the walls 😂.
I'm more impressed by the RC Cola machine! I didn't know they were still around!
Ah yes... The garbage bag trick. Works wonders tho haha
Looks okay. Sounds pretty good too. Was there any sound post processing?
Naive question but is the shallow DoF an iPhone post effect thing (the "cinematic mode" you mentioned maybe)? The background looks nice and blurry but I think it was doing weird things to her hair sometimes.
Why not grab the ring lights in the electronics section, they even come with a stand and would have better color than a work light.
Not bright enough
I wonder what the mid-range version of this would look like. I bet if you added a second hand camera and mic you could get genuinely pro results.
These types of videos excite me, it is exciting to see the process and result with little o try go far away using pro camera and cheap light
Feel sorry for that poor model in the thumbnail being called cheap garbage!
Right?! 🤣
what a flattering thumbnail 😂😂
Great concept - don’t obsess over gear!!
You guys made Those Hollylands Sound Awsome 🙂👌
Crazy
Can you show how you sync the video to the audio?
**Why** do you have to turn off house lights?
We call it "practical lighting". ;)
I call something practice if it appears on camera and the lights in our house ceiling are special since they are diffused with muslin. It would have been cheating too much if we kept them on.
@@EpicLightMedia Heh! Fair enough.
Love your channel, BTW. :)
you guys are the best !!! loved it 😍
You're the best!
The main light is still too low for my taste, making zombie like effect. You can also see it in the reflection of her eyes how low that is.
Hey we should make a zombie movie!!
Ah, cool. Ya'll are AZ folk too. Nice to see local places in the backgrounds. Cheers.
3:11 yoshi's market price is a bit unreasonable these days, i agree
I used to start in that way but now I went to professionally looking gears from China in order to work other people and letting them set up
5:58 Lin looks really like JerryRigEverything wife !!!
And that is how poor film makers start out. In HS we had no budget and started out with lights from the hardware store. Great video!
Lynne Looks So Good Lol
Awesome as always, thank guys
Wow! What an eye opening video! It's very helpful to me. Thank Epic Light Media.
Definitely NOT subscribing to this UNPROFESSIONAL „filmmaking“
I would have stopped in the art aisle for some white poster board.
Aluminium foil is a great way of controlling light spills - cheap, easy to get hold of and approved by Roger Deakins - what more do you need?
Also, nice hat tip to Ryan Mickey - I also just saw his videos and think the potential for him is amazing.
Yeah he’s the best
I'm in love with Lynne.
The worst part of this would be having to go inside a Walmart.
NICE WORK! I'll have to do something like this!
why did i like the before version :P maybe sometimes natural light looks better :P
fun video, shows how important it is to actually know what you are doing.
That was fun.😅🤙🏼
I asked for more budget oriented. you over delivered!
the equipment doesn't matter!.... he proceeds to record with 2 iphones of 1000 dollars each + 300 dollars in lighting + a decent set
You’re right next time I’ll film with a rock and a leaf
Truly epic!😊
This is awesome. well done
Thanks so much!!
Great video everyone! I've used tape, ties, shower curtains and cardboard 😂😂
Poly board!
