Against the mighty bowling line-up of west indies in the 70's... In 27 tests Gavaskar scored an almost unbelievable 2749 runs at an average of 65.45, with an astonishing 13 centuries.
The opening of this shows a lot of footage of the best English batsman against the quicks looking avarage. The Judge was anything but. He was the shining light in a massive trail off destruction from these astonishing bowlers. Imagine having these and then the best of them (malcolm Marshall) in the wings?
I remember that test and how the press tried to demonise that Windies team. But NONE of them could say what they were doing wrong, other than showing an arrogant England team who was boss.
As much as Tony Greig did use the wrong choice of words here he did go on to become a fine commentator and would regularly have the backs of the West Indians, Sril lankans and Indians when the Australian or English teams would dish it out to them. I remember vividly Tony Greig rushing down onto the playing field when the Sri lankans were ready to walk of the field against England back in the 90s because the Australian Umpires decided that Murali was no bowling despite having being tested and being cleared internationally. Tony Greig urged the Sri Lankans on and stood up for them. He again stood up for the Indian team when Ponting was captain of Australia during the tests. Insults were hurled at the Indians in which Harbajahn Singh would insult them back only to be suspended from the rest of the series. Tony and Ian Chappel both made the observation Australia can't both insult and claim being the victim if they get it dished back at them as well.
Brian close in his 40s ffs showed more balls and guts than anyone I know theres no room for racism anywhere im white and love and respect any color race religion or creed and I will happily have a drink with anyone and chat cricket because its the game that brings us together really

Not only it is proper noun, but out of respect too, and, it gives you a unique identity in society. Example: Dumb Ass!, Ok my Brother? Moreover, I like how you all chose to spell you all family name/surname with an exclamation mark. Very outstanding--UNIQUE. It would have been better, if we could have exchanged a few ideas about the video. Unfortunately, you Mr. Dumb Ass! had to be the centre of attraction. S.A.D. NUFF RESPECT TO YOU BRO. Pleasant day to you, Sir, Dumb Ass! JAH BLESS.
Stop talking shit Bobby. More people accept blacks more now than ever. Just because a few countries choose to stay in the past doesn't mean everyone is.
Stephen Draffin I have studied enough labels in sociology and psychology at university, so where ever you get your label "professional victim", look in the mirrior some more. Moreover, it's good to see you know my label is Bobby. I am not a product of society. But, as 22 year old captain on a Dutch football team I had to face and deal with the evil of racism, to get the team spirit and unity, that was best for the team. It was many years after this cricket video. I was also good at cricket too. I won't run away from racism and leave others to suffer. I come from a small island like the guys you watch in the video. So called, British West Indies. But, the black people who lived in these islands, fight the evil racist masters. We are not profesional victims of a sick white people psychopathic, inferiority complex. We know how to stand our ground and make them face their stupidity. White people hate that sh*t! Only the white people still fighting and killing people to recognize them as superior. How sick? 2020 and whites still trying to push white superior agenda. Check covid-19 and see who wants to vaccinate the whole world and see where they want to test their vaccines. Maybe your label was a mirrior image of you? A question. But look again in the mirror. Did you find him--the Professional Victim?
I would love to see the West Indies return to being this sort of supreme force. It would be the greatest thing for world cricket. I also wish I had seen this side play, as growing up watching the Ambrose, Walsh, Lara era side was impressive enough. I feel sad seeing the current state of WI test cricket - An Aussie.
This video is a part of documentary named Fire in Babylon. This is all about formation of West Indian team as a team with lethal pace attack. Malcolm Marshall was not part of that team hence not included here. Although he was one of the best who ever played.
I may get flogged for this...but Viv Richards and co. did not treat up and coming players any differently from how he and his team were treated..to this day there are dozens of local cricketers worth their salt yet the world will never hear of them...the tribal politics that ruled the wicb in those days exist more so even now ..richards had the power to keep the West Indies as a wrecking machine long after his departure but he never so much as spit on new players who were hungry to play for the West Indies Yes it's sad that they had to face racial abuse on and off the field but behind closed doors he was doin the exact same to his own...thats the story you may never hear about
Dear West Indians... How about a test match against India now without any protective gears for both the teams? That would be something interesting to watch. Isn’t it?
lol u heard it in the video, India surrendered the match lol....dude ur undernourished, ball chucking bowlers dont even come close to these guys. cant believe indian brag about their bowlers these days, this is how the standards have gone down when it comes to bowlers these days.
Love that team... where is that spirit vanished now. Shane in current cricketers of WI after Lara... keep that grudge, grouse burning inside to sweep away other teams! Aussies do play with lot of grit and high adrenaline... love Viv and that fearsome foursome
Tony Greg, was England captain, but South African by birth and perhaps used to making the blacks grovel. And West Indians knew his history, and that the history of English.
I loved watching cricket in those days. I followed the West Indies closely. They were my team. With hindsight what they did to Edrich and Close was ugly ugly ugly. It was as ugly as Thompson and Lillie (great bowlers) and it was as ugly as Larwood and Voce. Bouncers used properly are an entirely good part of the game. Used as a stock ball they are there just to threaten and intimidate. I'm not interested in arguments about "They did it first". I want to see cricket played skillfully and cleverly. Win at all costs is what we have now (and had then). You can keep that game for yourself - not me.
I am actually surprised by your initial comment. Asian? or do you mean West Indian of East Indian descent because of Asian cast a wide net? Facts are only West Indians of East Indian descent play cricket. Name me one West Indian of Chinese descent that played the game at a national or regional level over the past 70 years? Also, most of the East Indians are selected are from Guyana and Trinidad. The best team was selected which explains their dominance during their reign. A reminder Rohan Kanhai (Guyanese) played for the team 1957-1974. For you to use make this comment shows your ignorance about the times. You were not in their shoes. The literally showed Malcolm Marshall crying because of the racist comments spectators would shout at him and you have the nerve to minimize their experiences. Who feels it knows. Seeing that you did not venture out of WI during that time he did not feel. Therefore, take a seat and let these guys share their stories as they experienced.
@@chainreaction1703 I have no argument on the matter of Chinese and other people of Asian heritage such as Lebanese and Syrians and so on. My main point remains the same. Viv saw the West Indies cricket team as a means of providing a source of pride for the black man. I understand that and sympathise but the point remains that there were vanishingly few players of asian descent who played under his leadership. This might be called politics but it is called hypocrisy. I will not be told to stand down on this.
@@ferrislindsay ferris Lindsay Your conclusion is flawed. Research correlation v causation. You can't present an assertion without providing evidence to support it or misinterpret that evidence to suit your original assertion. I would agree with you if you give instances. Name me one WI of Asian descent who was better at any position than the 11 players that were selected during the height of WI cricket. Start with the opening batsmen then make your way down to the bowlers. I will wait. The documentary that you are assailing at least provided those instances of racism. You should too. the fact is, WI cricket selection is not based on race. Often it is dependent on the captain and the selection board. If the selection board and captain were from a particular region you were more likely to see more players from that region. WI did not and does not have a quota that is South Africa. Know your history before coming on a public forum and spouting ideas not supported by evidence. Also, if you are going to respond, please search Cricinfo and give stats to support your assertion when comparing players.
Whoever watching this in future, there is a whole movie, "Fire of Babylon", the dude who uploaded, just copied a few scenes from that movie, changed the bg music here and there, and made a video to make money. Please go ahead and watch the movie if you are a fan. That's the way you you can realize the true respect instead of watching a few clips with some edited music. Also please dislike this video, not because you are for/against any movement (it came to me as recommended as I was watching a few blm videos, I watched the movie a long time ago) , just because it's a complete rip off and I don't think watching a ripped off video and liking it shows the true respect for those guys whatever they had to go through and achieved so much even after that.
We still did better in that series than England ever could in late 70s -80s against them taking series to the final test with score 1-1. It was the final test where bishan Singh bedi declared 95/5 with lead 13. It was also that series where india chase 406
What Tony Greig (who was South African by the way) said was wrong and stupid, but I am disappointed that none of these West Indian players praised the courage of Brian Close who stood up to this savage bowling without complaint and without a helmet. His body was a mass of bruises after his innings and if he had not moved his head out of the way on a few of those deliveries he would surely have been killed.
Grieg should have suffered sever damage to his face for his stupid utterances and for the fact that he caused his teammates to suffer at the hands of the four horsemen........ we used our raw tear away pace to fight against racism. Proud to be west indian. #RALLY
Why are you so bitter towards the late Tony Grieg he did nothing wrong he said he want's to make the West Indies grovel which has nothing to do with racism.
@bofursgun I am West Indian so those men represented me. I care zero if Greg was media savvy rabble he deserved as good as he gave.....in fact he shud have gotten more.
@Chris Walker Oh c'mon buddy lighten up. "racism" you say. Really??!! The "grovel" comment by Greig was in poor taste and inappropriate at best, but to call him racist is ridiculous. Here is an excellent article (written by an Indian!!) from ESPN cricinfo on Greig and the whole affair. It's quite long, so here is a copy and paste section that is most relevant. Link to full article below. "The issue of apartheid was the backdrop against which Greig's "grovel" comment gained salience. He should have known better than to have used that word, and as a 29-year-old he couldn't exactly use youthful ignorance as an alibi. Yet it was hard for me to square Greigy with being racist. He had endeared himself to Indian fans both on the 1972-73 and the 1976-77 tours (the latter as captain), and unlike many of his team-mates who acted as if they had been frogmarched to the subcontinent by their cricket board, he seemed to enjoy India's heat, dust and the heaving crowds that thronged the stadiums. His career as a commentator only confirmed his love for the game irrespective of the colour of those who played it. His ebullient voice became the soundtrack for Sachin Tendulkar's brilliant knocks against Australia in Sharjah and Sri Lanka's charge to victory in the 1996 World Cup. The contrast between his even-handedness and the one-eyed partisanship of many Australian commentators on Channel Nine was stark. With the passage of time, I am less inclined to be as judgemental of Greig's outrageous comment as I once was. It was flip, ill-advised and freighted with a painful history - but it may not have been malicious, let alone racist." www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/17190466/sankaran-krishna-tony-greig-grovel-remark-issue-race-cricket

the music mashup in the first three minutes works really well, does anybody know if I can find the mashup anywhere?
We took it seriously
Very very seriously
Brian Close was effing rock hard man I’m telling ya. Respect to him.
They are brilliant bowlers . ❤️❤️

Why is there so much text in this video? Wished I could watch in peace.
Did Joel Garner consistently bowl 90+mph with the same high arm action and extra bounce?
If you can't face the pace.... Just get out. 😂
Too bad the movement died, before the mission was accomplished. Racism is even more powerful now in 2020, than back then. TOO SAD.
Yeah but it swings both ways
Sugah Kane I am very much impressed how you write your name at the end of your comment man. Confidence all over it. Not much people like to pin their signature to the things they write. My Brother your are bold! I really like your name, very special--Dumb ass! But, please Mr. Ass!, out of courtesy, please capitalize your family last name "Ass!".
Bobby Jhay Must be an interesting life being a professional victim
I feel sad seeing the current state of WI test cricket - An Aussie.
when will we have this golden era of bowlers back!
when cricket administrators remember that bowling is as important as batting.
Never for cricket in now a woman game. Pace men are canned by laws. Smh
5:43 That look itself says a lot about the fate of the game
Furious look
I, as an Englishman, learned my cricket in the shadow of this magnificent cricket team. The only time in my life that I enjoyed watching England lose.

anybody has links to the full documentary, please?

Why? Anything that I should be aware of? Otherwise I'll thank you now. That's a great find.
It's a feature film entitled Fire in Babylon and tells the 20 year reign of WI cricket
PABITRA BADHUK no it’s the link you want nothing else watch n enjoy
Why's Malcolm Marshall missing from this video?? What a champion bowler he was
This video is a part of documentary named Fire in Babylon. This is all about formation of West Indian team as a team with lethal pace attack. Malcolm Marshall was not part of that team hence not included here. Although he was one of the best who ever played.
What is that music with the woman yelling?
I may get flogged for this...but Viv Richards and co. did not treat up and coming players any differently from how he and his team were treated..to this day there are dozens of local cricketers worth their salt yet the world will never hear of them...the tribal politics that ruled the wicb in those days exist more so even now ..richards had the power to keep the West Indies as a wrecking machine long after his departure but he never so much as spit on new players who were hungry to play for the West Indies
Yes it's sad that they had to face racial abuse on and off the field but behind closed doors he was doin the exact same to his own...thats the story you may never hear about
Dear West Indians...
I'm Indian and I know all Indian players will be handicapped or dead after that kind of match
Love that team... where is that spirit vanished now. Shane in current cricketers of WI after Lara... keep that grudge, grouse burning inside to sweep away other teams! Aussies do play with lot of grit and high adrenaline... love Viv and that fearsome foursome
Holy shit no helmets and facing the likes of Garner, Roberts, Croft and Holding.😮
golden time to change the history
Starting with pain theme of Naruto
Team England were foolish to piss off probably the best bowling attack of that time
Tony Greg, was England captain, but South African by birth and perhaps used to making the blacks grovel.
And West Indians knew his history, and that the history of English.
Real Men faced these bowlers....love to the west indies team.
SIR ISAAC ALEXANDER VIVIAN RICHARDS,looks like 32 years of age.
I would have some more footage of the peroiod incorporated.
when hype job meets reality
Today cricket is easy
Racism, my foot. How many Asians are in that West Indies team. Viv has form here.
They thought they fought racism but it was just a quote from a man from South Africa. They judged him from he came from.
Excellent video. My salute to West Indies bcoz they showed Brits their place
I salute the batsmen who faced them ....Even without helmet
6:32 pretty sure he would have died if he got hit.
Don't blame the Windies boys for trying to knock seven bells out of England for what Greig said but 45-year-old Brian Close is as tough as Tesco steak
The best way to shove the unwanted words back into the foul mouth of someone....
The Indian team was the testing ginueas for this . And like Gandhian style we protested 😛
We still did better in that series than England ever could in late 70s -80s against them taking series to the final test with score 1-1. It was the final test where bishan Singh bedi declared 95/5 with lead 13. It was also that series where india chase 406
That was when Windies was Windies.
Wow even Muhamad Ali noticed these guys
You can forget but you never ever forget, grovel them grovel
Real Soldiers
6:40 Me trying to play a cover shot 😘
Colin croft replaced by Malcom marshal
well...dats a true and a heroic fightback...take a bow West Indies team of yore.....😊😊
Windies the greatest test team
Wow seems like old times when men had balls to face 90 mph without helmet. I think new generation has become barbie girls.
@chubbyurma Must make going to the bank a bit of a chore...
This is real aggression...
5.56 to 6.00
People who brought helmet to cricket
Grieg should have suffered sever damage to his face for his stupid utterances and for the fact that he caused his teammates to suffer at the hands of the four horsemen........ we used our raw tear away pace to fight against racism. Proud to be west indian. #RALLY
Why are you so bitter towards the late Tony Grieg he did nothing wrong he said he want's to make the West Indies grovel which has nothing to do with racism.
@bofursgun I am West Indian so those men represented me. I care zero if Greg was media savvy rabble he deserved as good as he gave.....in fact he shud have gotten more.
@bofursgun yaaaaaaaawn. My brotha save your gibberish for somebody that actually cares.
It was flip, ill-advised and freighted with a painful history - but it may not have been malicious, let alone racist."

@@jahno7154 Exactly. Greig's "grovel" comment was a poor choice, but to call him racist based on this is a knee jerk emotional stance at best!
Please take the music out
Why? It's part of the documentary.
Stupid idiot.
Ummm bodyline Eng VS Aust??? England got what they started
All DIFFRENCE was helmets if batsmen had helmet.... They were normle bowler...like they r today in windies team

Well done legends.

Came up with all kinds of rules to diminish the wi and now acting like they are so talented and skillful
Very true

Black and white racism like in south Africa sir vivviamn?
Strange that the Poms complained about 4 great W.I. fast bowlers dishing 'em up in their faces! Lillee and Thompson had done the same thing to England..Only worse!..Particulaly Thompson, who was ridiculously quick!..Oh..Of course! Lillee and Thompson were colonial white men! Tony Grieg didnt have to bother with 'grovel' ..Oops!..He was South African of course!..I dont even think he meant it as a racist comment, but i can see why it was taken as such!..The W.I. team had a point to prove..I think they did it rather nicely, and caused Tony Grieg to grovel..And he did..in front of everybody!..Lesson learned!..At least he had the guts to admit he stuffed it up, and never did it again!
oo god what a team that wass👏
