@@sabreeemneely there is something to be said for being different. he is by far the greatest leadoff hitter of all time. not just his speed and average but his obp his power which he had the stolen bases. it's like arguing where steph curry ranks all time in basketball and comparing him against 6 different centers. When you build an "alltime team" of 9 Henderson would be a very smart pick in my opinion. Only guy comparable I think would be Ty Cobb which in itself means you are in discussion of top 10.

The thing about him, and this is to take nothing away from his speed, but he had an eye like nobody else. Like, the *millisecond* a pitcher motioned towards home, he was off. I've never seen anybody else in the history of baseball get a jump like that with the exception of MAYBE Bonds early in his career.

@@sabreeemneely - Which stats are you referring to? Ichiro was a great player, and he is sure to be a first ballot Hall of Famer, but Rickey leads Ichiro in pretty much all stats advanced or otherwise. Henderson's career WAR is almost double what Ichiro had (111 to 60). OPS, OPS+, OBP, slugging all heavily in Henderson's favor. RBI, SB, HR, runs scored, BB all heavily in Henderson's favor. Ichiro has a higher career batting average and 34 more hits, but that hardly offsets the bulk of the statistics that heavily favor Henderson. If I had to choose between Henderson and Ichiro it's going to be Henderson every time, literally a no-brainer. Not only that, but how many World Series rings did Ichiro win? How many playoff series? In the clutch hitting? Henderson shined on the big stages, and on some big teams. Nothing against Ichiro, he was a great player, but Henderson was better overall there just is no real debate there, definitely not from a statistics point of view.

Great ballplayer, horrible with fans. I remember when I was 14 and going to the ballpark early with a bunch of other kids. We'd stand behind the chain-link fence and watch the players walk onto the field for practice. He must have been 40 feet away from us and we would be shouting his name. He'd always do the same thing, look over and then walk away. He did that on three separate occasions. Never forgot that. Thanks Rickey. He could have learned a lot from Dave Winfield, now that was a player with class.

I cannot believe when I heard about him passing away.I am now 60 and you never would think at this age that you are more vulnerable to an illness of some sort then when you were in your twenties.I am very athletic and you always think in your mind that you are still in the shape that you were in your twenties.

The A's absolutely need to give Rickey Kobe treatment and retire his 35 along with his (already retired) 24.

8:26 Lou Brock tells Rickey "today you might have been the greatest". Rickey ditches his written speech and says "today I am the greatest of all time"

Imagine how many bases he would steal with larger bases and pitchers being limited on pickoffs. I always loved watching him play. Rickey the legend!

As a born and raised Padres fan, I remember being 7 years old and having my dad take me down to the Murph/Q and specifically point to Ricky Henderson 👉🏼 “he might be the best baseball player ever” I remember him in the navy blue and orange
