Training for Le Tour de France with Ben O'Connor

- Two days before Australian cyclist and one of my closest mates, Ben O'Connor flew off to his first Tour de France, we went for a training ride in Andorra. Little did we know at the time of filming, Ben would go on to win a stage of the 2021 Tour, and then finish 4th overall...
He's the highest placed Australian ever on debut at the Tour, and only two other Australians have finished higher than him on GC - Cadel Evans who won in 2011 and Richie Porte who was on the podium in 2020.
It's an incredible achievement for someone who I have so much admiration for. A dream come true.

Tristan, without question, your best video yet! The passion, friendship, and respect was palpable and comes through. Absolutely wonderful. What dually made this a top-notch video was the focused and detailed unpacking of you and Ben discussing his training and Tour preparation. Thanks Cal! We knew he’d do well but I think doing this well was a bit of a surprise. Shows he’s got the talent and he just needs the clear water ahead of him to make a solid result a reality.

Hey man, good to have you on board 🙏🏼 Just using an iPhone 11 Pro for these. Does everything pretty well and is super portable which is the main thing on the bike.

Seems in Andorra you are either climbing or descending? - bit like where I live in Settle, North Yorkshire - which is why at age 78 I have bought an E bike!
Thanks Gordon! You’re right - Andorra is literally either up or down. There’s not much flat in the entire country so it’s a great place to train.

Amazing how knowledgable and measured he is, it really takes a certain kind of cunning to know when to put the hammer down. Ben's prediction for Beixalis was spot on, Kuss gapped Valverde at the end of that climb, had 25 seconds at the summit, and held that advantage to the finish line.
Thanks for this great video, really unique to get a peek at what the training pedagogy is like for Grand Tour riders. Those 4-minute sets sound absolutely filthy, can't imagine being able to repeatedly put out that kind of work. Oh, and those roads and views have me absolutely itching to get out for a ride!
