Directed by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm, the film follows Batman, voiced by Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series, Batman: Arkham video game series), as he faces a mysterious new vigilante called the Phantasm while also dealing with his complex relationship with Andrea Beaumont, voiced by Dana Delany (Desperate Housewives, Superman: The Animated Series, China Beach).

RIP, Kevin Conroy.
RIP, Dick Miller.
RIP, Abe Vigoda.
RIP, Bob Hastings.
RIP, Lloyd Bochner.
RIP, John P. Ryan.
RIP, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.
I hate just how many names are on this list. There are very few actors/musicians/writers that have passed that really took a toll on me emotionally, but Kevin Conroy's passing still hurts me to this day. I grew up in the early 90's. I played all of the Batman Arkham games and played/watched pretty much every other game and animated Batman feature he was a part of. He was my Batman for three decades. To this day, when I read a Batman graphic novel or comic, his voice is the one I hear.
@@FaytLinegod He's still alive
Legends all around
Forgot Michael Ansara.
RIP, Shirley Walker
Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are still the standard for Batman and Joker
@Kickinthescience true dat, R.I.P. Kevin Conroy
@Kickinthescience Kevin and Mark are the Dynamic duo when it comes to their voice acting, even thought they both voice characters that are sworn enemies
Not just any standard, they are the Gold Standard for Batman & Joker.
@@The_Knight_StalkeR_x007 true dat
For specifically the ANIMATED version. Don’t get out of hand.
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is probably Mark Hamill's best performance and worth a watch too
co-sign this
This ☝💯
Agree, with some part of the Arkham games too
I know everyone talks about the flashback scene, and for good reason, but I always loved the final battle between Batman Beyond and Joker as the best scene of the movie. The way Terry decides not to do it like Bruce would is what finally takes down Joker for good. It also proved that Joker would never be a Spider-Man villain.
"Please! I need it to be different now..." That line has lived rent-free in my head for years. Conroy's performance, just pleading for absolution, the animation, the tragedy of how it turns out...
I know right!! It's my favorite batman movie ever because of that scene!
The man who prepares for everything, wasn't prepared to be happy.
Shirley Walker's score not just for this movie but ALSO for both the Batman and Superman animated series are less celebrated than they should be; the score in this film is iconic!
11:53 The fact that Bruce feels the need to apologize to his dead parents for not being in pain anymore over their deaths and not wanting to dawn the cape and cowl says a lot about him.
Batman is one of those characters that I'd kinda hurt by the nature of comics. He can never fully arc and find peace because we need more Batman comics.
Dana Delaney’s performance as Andrea is what got her the role as Lois lane in superman TAS.
21:38 that’s right.
This is LITERALLY the best Batman movie EVER. People will do mental gymnastics to justify it being one of the live action movie.
But so far none of them have lived up to what this movie is.
For me the Batman and mask of the phantasm are the best Batman films
This movie is a masterpiece
@@chand911 A TRUE take
No lies detected.
@@jaylenjayden9305 I agree with this! This is my absolute best batman film. And the batman is my favorite live action batman film
Mark Hamill's Joker is so amazing, you can't spell Mark Hamill without Arkham. And RIP Kevin Conroy.
I absolutely love this movie
21:29 me too
One of the best Batman movies ever made.
I’m honestly surprised a live action version hasn’t been made.
Doesn’t need one
That would ruin it and be entirely pointless, that's why.
@@teruienages962
You can’t ruin what’s already been made…and if a remake fails, you still have the original.
As someone who saw it on release, and has a DVD copy, ld be all for it as a long long time fan.
But why pointless ?
A chance to introduce this story to a new age of fans , with today’s talent and technology, it could be amazing .
In live action you have to compromise between who gives the best vocal performance and who looks the part.
Saw this in theaters when I was a kid and that opening credit still hits
Jaby’s excitement is my excitement for every Mask of Phantasm reaction video
26:59 me too
Joker and Batman voiced by Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy will always be my favourites. I just think they managed best to translate the characters from page to screen. I know live action has its limitations in that way, sometimes, which is why I think these animations are often the best.
I also ADORE Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. You guys should really do a reaction video of that one too!
This is the greatest Batman movie of all time. Snyder. Nolan, and Reeves could never top this masterpiece. There's a reason Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill played Batman and The Joker for 30 years it's because they are the greatest to ever do it.
Or Burton
It’s Burton’s 89 that inspired BTAS and it’s movies
@@EM-tx3ly And yet, Burton films are utter trash, written by incompetent writers who didn't even know a single thing about Batman. Some of the worst blockbusters ever made.
@@EM-tx3ly I know
@@FuzzyDlopThe Dark Knight Trilogy could be said trash too if we compare it to The Batman Comic Books, I know Burton's ones are not great but we have to understand they took a daring first step to try to make The characters accurately to comic book's, or else studios wanted 60's Batman similar show, all the attempts to make hik accuarye were scrapped and cancelled because they were thinking only campy ones would give them money not to mention The Iconic Line "I Am Batman" improvised By Michael Keaton inspired every superhero to say and declare thier names too or else even in comic books no superhero declare thier first name directly, Superman always told everyone he is a friend others like Lose did it for him, The Batman is first Character to do so with Michael Keaton, in short I agree That Burton ones are not good but we have to see the fact that All Of The Batman Live-Action are not good in that way but just like how The Dark Knight trilogy even though it's trash introduced the world of Batman, Ofcourse The Batman's Character is not 0.1% accurately introduced of how much way more cooler he is in comic books, I hope they would get it atleast 0.1% right in the next 1000 year that me being optimistic!
Fun fact! The character Andrea Beaumont has a cameo in the epilogue for Batman Beyond.
23:42 Justice league unlimited
@nathancruz9172 it was an episode of JLU buy it was an epilogue to Batman Beyond
This film is what convinced me that Kevin Conroy (May He Rest In Peace😢) is the best actor to ever play The Dark Knight. To this day the opening theme composed by the late great Shirley Walker chills me to the core. It is truly the music that embodies Batman for me, haunting, intimidating, powerful, and especially hopeful.
The 2 best scenes in the movie are when Bruce goes to his parents grave and apologizes for possibly giving up his crusade of fighting crime to have a normal life with Andrea, that scene was so powerful that the director actually went into the recording booth to see if Kevin was okay because it took a lot out of him.
And the other is when Andrea leaves him and decides to become Batman. When he puts on the mask and turns around Alfred is horrified, not just because of how intimidating he looks but because he is seeing the boy he helped raise become a monster, a monster for good but still a monster in his eyes.
Both Andrea Beaumont and Rachel Dawes are both based on a comic book character called Rachel Caspian. In the comics, her father Judson Caspian was the vigilante called the Reaper (who the Phantasm is based on). In the comics, Rachel decided to atone for the sins of her father by becoming a nun.
26:58 makes sense.
This was unofficially considered the greatest Batman film up until The Dark Knight, and it’s actually still up for debate to this day!
Batman is the world's greatest detective because he can draw a smiley face on photos with a sharpie
:))
The voice of Vallestra was done by man who played the Traitor at end of Godfather 1. His name is Abe Vigoda.
He was also a regular on the 70's sitcom, Barney Miller.
Yep, Tessio in The Godfather. He was also in quite a few funny skits for Late Night with Conan O'Brian.
@@FaytLinegod
And had a brief spinoff...."Fish."
Mark Hamill Joker will never be beat love him and Kevin together ugh so many good voice actors! & I forgot the woman who does Lois Lane in Superman the animated series voices Andrea in this too
I dont see people giving enough love for dana delany as andrea beaumont! This is before she played lois lane in superman and she kills it!
I didn't know she did this movie
i hope u guys go through a lot of the DC animated projects
"It's a chicken and potatoes kind of situation" 😂 God I love you Achara! You say the most adorable things 🙏
Kinda proving the whole Dirzy Asian chick stereotype.
Thats Tia Carrera from Wayne's World singing during the end credits. She's actually an accomplished singer as well
She also voiced Nani from Lilo and stitch.
I love that this movie goes into the background of both Batman and Joker.
One of the best Joker laughs in history. 😁
One of? No no the best period
12:04 This was Kevin's favorite scene he ever recorded as Batman
Siskel and Ebert both regretted not seeing this in theaters, and gave it a positive review on their TV series.
Jaby, Achara, you should go back to the end credits and listen to the song, "I Never Even Told You", sung by Tia Carrere. It's breathtakingly beautiful.
The plot twist is obvious, but we don't want to be true. We all knew how would end . That's how good this movie is, they put the least hidden villain and knew we would actively try ignore
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm still remains as my #1 favorite animated Batman movie as well as the best animated Batman movie of all time mostly because it is based on _Batman: The Animated Series_ and features Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Joker respectively.
I was 12 years old when this movie came out. Indeed, it was edgy for its time. That was the first time I saw Batman bleed.
Same
Wow...the voice acting is SOOOOOO good!!!!
The fate of the Joker is left unrevealed in the movie, but The Batman & Robin Adventures Annual tie-in comic expanding on the movie's events provides an explanation: Andrea drags him into the sewer below and they fight for a while until she decides not to kill him, seeing that he is no longer her father's killer but rather a raging lunatic with no sense of right or wrong, following which an explosion from above separates them and knocks Joker into the water, where he is carried away by the current.
It didn't need to be explained. There's plenty of moments in the animated series where Joker is seemingly killed. He has apparently been eaten by sharks, dropped down a chimney stack, crashed an exploding aircraft full of grenades... If you don't see a body, then he survived.
@@Rocket1377 It didn't need to but it still is something that they showed. I'm just explaining it.
That’s what I read when, I first saw the actual comic book version of TH-cam.
I was today years old when I found out that jaby and Greg are related to each other 🤯 I’ve been watching the reel rejects for years and loved the cinepals because they had a similar vibe and the realization just set in
As far as 90's animation movies go, this is an effing masterpiece!
21:50-22:00 exactly
*Keep your Wests and Romeros,*
*your Keatons and Nicholsons,*
*your Bales and Ledgers,*
*your Afflecks and Letos,*
*_As long as I can enjoy Conroy and Hamill, I'm good._*
Romero was Hamill's blueprint for Joker. As for Kevin.....Conroy admired West.
I didn't care for Bale but Ledger did a good job as the Joker.
I think Mark Hamil once said he wouldnt do Joker unless Kevin Conroy as Batman
Sadly, he’s not doing joker 🃏 anymore, after Kevin Conroy passed away.
@@nathancruz9172
I wonder in the "Batman Eulogy" scene if Mark Hamill (as the Joker) was letting viewers know on the downlow that there's no Joker without Mark Hamill (as Batman).
Joaquin and Heath are both great Jokers but Mark has so much more range. He can get just as dark as those two but he really nails the humor way better than either of them.
23:33 exactly
With a sprinkle of Ceasar Romero.
Surprised you didn’t have a reaction to Joker’s legendary laugh moment… one of the greatest laughs in cinematic history.
The best batman movie nobody ever talks about, saw in the theater as a kid.
Mark Hamill is always insane as the Joker and go figure his favorite live action Joker is Jack Nicholson.
31:25 "it feels like a movie." It was a movie. It was actually released in theaters. I remember going to see it as a kid. It was awesome then and its still awesome now. One of the great batman movies still.
8:34 Agreed! RIP Kevin Conroy! 🙏🏽💪
This story goes full circle in the final season of Justice League Unlimited, and Andrea has a hand in the origins of Batman Beyond.
The early 90s Bruce Timm Batman installments had no business being as perfect and amazing as they are. Love everything he did with the character and his universe.
93 was also was the year Exosquad the animated TV show started with a huge body count, you know for kids, Universal now has Exosquad on Peacock for kids, a war story with adult subjects and saying war will end with death, in the kids section. But Exosquad had more main characters dying than any cartoon at the time. I barely remember the commentary on Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm even reference Exosquad once said something like that other show that really went there.
This movie is the definitive Joker.
Also, Alfred's "My God" when Bruce fully embraces being Batman is one of the best scenes in cinema.
RIP Kevin Conroy, your voice is iconic and will live on forever. 🦇❤
It's never been about vengeance for Batman. It's about justice.
Y’all are absolute legends for this.
There's a brief cameo that tells what became of Andrea in the episode of the show Justice League: Unlimited, "Epilogue."
That’s right.
Please tell me wat happened I can't remember 😢
@@lkage69 It's complicated.
You should be able to find the clip here on youtube. It's titled "The Truth Revealed | Justice League Unlimited/Batman Beyond"
Basically, Terry (Batman Beyond) is Bruces secret son. And Amanda Waller will explain the rest.
God, meeting Kevin back in 2015...my childhood....seriously.
I met him the same year. He was so nice. It’s really sad that he passed, I was depressed for a bit after I found out.
@@lexofpower2822 I had about 15 odd seconds when doing a video to realize he was about to do "THE LINE". I'd missed it at cons a couple times, but having my phone out and ready. Convinced a friend to come to a con he was at and meet him, one of the last ones he ever did I think. :( I've met some people with some great voices that we've lost. :(
@@lexofpower2822 Oh yeah. I mean, I'd gotten a autograph, and then he asked if I wanted a photo. When Batman asks if you want something, you say YES PLEASE!
"Don't like his shiny hair?" I think that was just a lighting and depth detail that WB animation has always worked with. It makes me think of the Animaniacs joke with Mr. Director calling him Mr. Pennzoil Head.
Watch batman under the red hood
They have already seen it
3:09 jaby calling achara butler 😂😂🤣🤣
I keep forgetting that most of you top TH-camrs weren't born or were toddlers when this came out! THANKS for delving into one of the greatest American animated superhero movies ever!!!! Wow, I forgot Abe Vigoda from "The Godfather" was in this!!! "I never counted on being happy" hits me in the feels each time.... :(
Ahhh I wanted to see the most epic Joker laugh as the place was exploding
I tore this up on VHS from how often I watched it.
You can get the blu ray, 4K blu ray, digital, and DVD 📀
Thanks for this review!
I feel Andrea realized in the end that Bruce Wayne had become Batman as a way to do good and take down the bad guys whereas she, whatever her reasons, was essentially a killer. So she knew that even if they got together he would never be able to fully trust (or even love) her.
The lyrics of the song aren’t the names credited backwards, but rather the names NOT credited. Specifically the names of the members of the choir backwards.
24:05-24:08 the scythe is melted. 24:17 😂 24:47 there goes your 🏍️, Batman. 25:42 spit 🦷 26:58 💨
Cool fact - All Gotham scenes in the Animated Series and here were painted on black paper instead of the normal white ones
Nice to know the bro watched it. Watching it for the first time on Christmas morning was literally the best Christmas I've ever had. THE BEST BATMAN MOVIE OF ALL TIME
Wow Classic. I had this movie on cassette tape when I was a kid. I rewatched it so many times. It’s been like 29 years.
This might be my favourite Batman movie
27:53 me too
Best Batman movies in my opinion:
1. The Dark Knight
2. Batman
3. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
4. The Batman
I also want to add under the red hood, assault on arkham and batman first year
btw what's number 2
@@kiarashtaheri7478 Tim Burton's Batman
True story: I know Scott Porter the voice of nightwing, and last time i talked to hom he told the story of he was doing the voice for a new batman game and kevin had already recorded his part before he past away, so when he put the cans on went into character, and he didn't know what he was about to hear, and Kevin's monologue broke him down and had to take a 2 hour break
Not night wing in this been last 10+ years for video games
Scott Porter played speed racer in the live action movie
This is the only other Batman movie that can look “The Dark Knight” in the eye and say hold my beer
This is, I don't care what anyone says, the BEST batman movie. Even compared with live action. Some minor moments of the animation look ropey but in general it holds up very well. And, especially considering the short runtime, the story and characters are handled masterfully, with incredible acting and musical score!
Andrea's voice was also Josephine in Tombstone. Had a real moment in the mid-'90s.
The vhs had a thick comic book hidden under the cover.
Practically a graphic novel of the film!!!
I've got at least one or two copies of it in my collection I know a few scenes like the chase right after the robbery were left out of the book. But the point is still there about him needing to strike fear into criminals.
The 4K slipcover have a comic book cover last year.
THE BEST BATMAN MOVIE TILL THIS DATE….❤
Oh Achara. The opening music is essential to the story!
Truly history in the making.
The first-ever animated movie/original Batman animated movie/first theatrical animated release based on DC Comics.
Set between seasons 1 and 2 of the animated series.
Great storytelling to continue within the universe and hold nothing back (romance, violence, death).
Also seeing more of Gotham in the past with the characters we know.
Mark Hamill is delightful as always as Joker and seeing him as Jack Napier (subplot wise) was cool.
Dana Delany was the voice of Andrea Beaumont prior to voicing Lois Lane in the Superman animated series (1996-2000).
Opening day was Christmas Day of 1993, this one and Tombstone (both with Delany), the same day.
Shirley Walker's Batman theme composed originally for the animated series and fully used for the film is remarkable.
It suffered at the box office because of not enough promotion.
WB just expected this big instant turnout and all because it was a Batman film.
On video cassette, it did rank in the dough and fandom.
Tia Carrera (Wayne's World, True Lies) performed the song, "I Never Even Told You" which is an underrated movie song.
Without a doubt, definitely setting the bar for future DC animated movies and the ones with Batman.
RIP to the many voice talents of this movie and series.
Btw, Andrea Beaumont aka The Phantasm character was reconned into the Batman/Catwoman miniseries (2020-present).
The next 2 Batman animated movies in this era are home releases.
Batman & Mr. Freeze:Sub-Zero (1998) and Batman:Mystery of The Batwoman (2003).
0:36 ~ Not only that, but this is the first and thus far only animated film from Detective Comics to have had a theatrical release and an actual orchestra contributing to the soundtrack
The vagaries of living halfway across the world *and* in a regional area, I saw this _before_ I saw Tim Burton's Batman '89. Somewhat of a formative watching experience for a young Batfan - this set the standard _REALLY_ high.
Love the story of young Bruce in this. He fell in love. The type of love that can wash away any pain. Then his heart was broken. The pain of that heartbreak combined with the loss of his parents. Afterwards Bruce no longer existed, only Batman remained.
Dana Delany says "He laughs" (7:02) in just about the same way in Tombstone.
20:13 he makes a pretty good point actually 😂
The Joker's real name is Jack Napier
“An Egg and Potatoes Situation” We got another one for Arkham boys.
Funny thing about the idea of "when a hero falls in love, that's it." If you're curious, there is a video where it goes over who was arguably the best (and consistent) love interest for Peter Parker, and it was surprisingly NOT Mary Jane.
Would be great to see Achara and Hayley watch the animated movie Batman: Under the Red Hood. It touched on some similar themes from the Arkham Knight game. Just a bit more to the comic origin.
Watching this movie and the behind the scenes stuff is how I first learned the Joker was voiced by Mark Hamill. That was wild to learn after watching the original animated series since it began.
I wish we got to se more Cadmas in the DCAU. In the episode “Epilogue” we learn that The Phantasm is one of Amanda Waller’s assassins.
You really do have to give the Joker credit for cracking this mystery first, even if he DID only get there because he had inside information that Batman didn't at the time. ^_^
Mark Hamill had the best Joker laugh.
My favorite Batman film of all time
This movie has a crazy good song. Tia Carrere "I Never Even Told You."
The conceit of TMOP is that the Adapta-genic chemicals of the "Smoke" is that it can camouflage the wearer. No Magic, just chemistry.
Auto-like for the movie sekection. Kevin Conroy is my Batman!
🦇❤🦇
By an amazing coincidence, I watched this film a couple of weeks ago. Every bit as good as when it first came out.
The first time I saw this movie, I was scrolling through channels on HBO and I stumbled across it. After watching it, I decided to watch BTAS and thought it would be as violent as this film was, it wasn’t. As a kid this movie really convinced me for a whole that it was really set in the 1940’s!!!
Egg and potato situation. Ü. I love it. I am going to have to find a way to use it in the future.
This movie has really good music ( I never even told you ) , such a good soundtrack
Batman (Bruce Wayne) began his crime-fighting career at the age of 25
The merchandise connected to this movie gave away the identity of the Phantasm
If you asked me what is the greatest scene in any Batman movie it's in this movie where Bruce puts the Batman mask on for the first time and Alfred's look of horror as if he's saying what have you created.
When people ask "what's the best Batman movie?" and they answer "Batman '89" or "The Dark Knight" or "The Batman", know that they are arguing over second place because Mask Of The Phantasm is the actual best.
Oh boy ,The Golden Age of WB animation 👏👏👏
