Just a heads up for the novices like myself out there. This video shows a 4WD, if your truck is rear wheel, there will be no axle to take off. You will use a 7mm allen wrench instead of the T47 to get the brakes off, and a 36mm socket instead of the 32mm to get your hub nut off. After you take the brake caliper and the rotor off, all you have to do is take off the hub nut, and the bearing slides right off. I was able to get one side done in about 30-45 minutes.
@TheHillbillyRidge If the front makes kind of a roaring noise above 30 MPH It might be the hub. The tolerances on some of these new hubs are so tight, that you can't always see if there's play by moving the tire back and forth. This same thing happened on my 04 Grand Cherokee. Once I actually took the hub off I was able to move it with my hand. Hope this helps you out. We sell hubs on our website 1aauto,com If that ends up being the issue.
These hubs are all brand new and self contained. You do not need to grease them. Basically you just take them out of the box and put them on. We carry some great quality economy hubs and also the Timken ones on our website 1aauto.com 888-844-3393 Hope this helps you out. Have a great day!
@nachojr1234567890 The plugs should be on the backside of the hub for them to plug into.
That should be fine as long as there isn't a whole lot of force used on the pry bar. You may also want to check your ball joints to see if they are okay. Hope this helps you out.
Sometimes well use the same part of one video to show you how to tackle another project. If your brake pads are fine, you can leave them in place while you tackle the hub. If they're worn, now would be a good time to replace them while the pads are off.
It should be pretty much the same, it may even be a little easier because you do not have a front axle to remove. We carry new hubs on our website with FREE SHIPPING for your 2000 2WD Dodge Dakota. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
@nachojr1234567890 It may depend on the year of the vehicle.
You would have to research a few shops in your area.
These hub and bearing assemblies aren't serviceable. They come as a complete assembly.
It's not that bad of a job. We carry both the economy wheel bearings and also the Timken replacement wheel bearings on our website 1aauto.com 888-844-3393 All of our parts include FREE SHIPPING in the lower 48 states.
It should as long as it has enough torque.
You should be able to apply what's shown in this video to your 99 Dodge Dakota truck. The Timken bearings are made very well. If you want to call our sales staff we can give you a price for your application over the phone. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
2wd vehicles do not have a transfer case at all. 2wd vehicles also normally do not have a differential, just sealed wheel bearings.
As long as you don't disturb the steering knuckle (which you shouldn't have to) you won't need to align the truck.
@TheHillbillyRidge If you remove the rear wheel off of the vehicle, you should be able to see if it has rear disks or drum brakes. Usually you can even see them through the spokes or holes in the wheel.
@mrspanky61 The video shows you everything involved with replacing the hubs on your Dodge Durango. You should be able to use basic hand tools for most of this job.
@xxdjcharlierockxx On some vehicles you need to take the axel out to access the bolts that hold the hub on.
Thanks for watching. Have a great day! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
no need to remove axle. !!!.
+c shaf Thank you for checking us out. In some cases you must remove the axle to press out the hub assembly or gain access to the bolts. It is not required in all repairs though. 1aauto.com
That's what i was thinking. But I wasn't sure.
@pkupernik It does so that you can get at the bolts on the backside of the hub.
The vehicle is in fact 4WD because it has front axles.
@bbigdaddy198294 The huming noise could be a bad wheel bearing. If it makes a popping noise while you turn it could be a bad axle shaft of possible a ball joint.
If you have your local dealer run the VIN number on the truck for you, they can tell you what it came equipped with. We carry new wheel hub bearing assemblies for all kinds of vehicles on our website 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
@Icriedtoday LOL...I hope the Lord is happy with me.
@6983jt The drivers side should be fairly similar to the passenger side. You may have to remove the axle to be able to access the bolts.
It sounds like it's the low brake pad indicators are squealing, you may want to check the front brake pads. Hope this helps you out.
@infringinator You shouldn't need to purchase dust covers.
Thanks for watching. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
We'll keep this request in mind in the event that we need to make this repair in the future. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Great video! One question: Why do you remove the axle? Is it just to make it easier to get to the hub bolts?
It's sooo much easier to reach the hub bolts. In my case I also had to heat the bolts up in order to break them loose and I didn't want to melt any of the rubber that was around the boot of the axle
If there's play in the wheel then they are bad. I usually recommend replacing them in pairs, because if one is bad, the other one usually goes bad not long after the first one.
@nawfyman1 We currently do not have an auto repair video on this particular repair. We do carry the Haynes repair manuals on our website,it should show you how to repair this particular part. Here's a link to them on our website. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com/1A/repairmanual/Dodge/Dakota/1AMNL00051/220020/2000
The bearing on those are pressed into the rotor itself so normally to save yourself the trouble, you replace the entire rotor, bearing and brake pads at the same time.
@cburn665 Thank you for visiting our auto repair channel on TH-cam. We currently do not have a video for that particular repair. However on most vehicles you need to remove the brake calipers, and the center nut off of the axle. You might need to remove the axel, depending on how easily you can get at the bolts on the backside of the hub. We carry replacement hubs for your Dodge Shadow 93. Here's a link to them on our site. 1aauto.com/1A/wheel-bearing-hub-front/Dodge/Shadow/-/-/1993
The hub assembly and the bearings are one whole unit.
@TheJeremyCupp On this vehicle the hub and the bearing assembly are one unit. They are not servicable, so you wouldn't need a press, they bolt onto the steering knuckle. Hope this helps you out. Have a great day!
If you go to your local dealer with the VIN number they could tell you. Once you know that we could help you out with the correct part for your truck.
Great video! I have a '98 Dakota up in the air right now and the 32mm socket does not seem to fit. Too small...nut is in good shape, not rounded, so the 32mm socket 9 for my 1998 Dodge Dakota SLT) should fit ...but it doesn't... Is this normal? I'll logic it up to 34mm and let you know if that works, because if its a 34mm socket, 1AAutoparts might want to review the "Tools needed" page. Or I got a real strange front end. Thanks, You guys are very good and I appreciate the video! keep it up.
@Dadtothebone33 It should come off just like the video shows. You may want to double check everything to make sure that there isn't anything holding it in place.
It would just be my luck that my left front wheel bearing would be going bad right before I have to buy books for college oh what fun.....can't wait to replace mine on my 2001 Dakota
You need to remove it to gain access to the bolts that hold the hub assembly to the knuckle.
If it requires that the spring needs to be removed, than you might need a spring compressor.
@jacobopatty420 You could try to use a breaker bar on an extension on the ratchet to break it free.
@ijustgottasaythis It should be the same size as the one shown in our video. Sometimes manufacturers do change the size of the bolt used between model years. We try to provide as much accurate (tool size) information as possible. Thank you for checking out our auto repair videos. Have a great day!
@chefchriskoz These will interchange between the left and right side. They're not side specific.
Thank you so much. I ordered both front hubs for a 2002 Dakota and they fit perfectly! I did not remove the half shaft, I used a deep 14 mm socket and was able to break loose the 3 hub bolts. It went together great, thanks to your video!
+Kendall Brown Thank you for your order. If you would like to leave us a review on Google it would be greatly appreciated. Here is a link to our reviews section. Have a great day! goo.gl/i5JFNY
@benshivd I did mention feeding the harness but you are right I did not talk about connecting it. So yes make sure you reconnect the ABS harness and route it as it was routed originally.
If the studs are damaged you may be able to replace the damageed ones.
You may want to check the radiator fan to see if it's working correctly.
@BFMVdrummer It could make a grinding noise. Usually they'll make a howling noise too.
Is it really necessary to remove the axle? Couldn't you access the wheel bearing hub assembly bolts without taking the axle off?
@Dadtothebone33 GREAT! Sometimes these things can be a bit stubborn. Glad to hear you made out OK. Have a great day.
@x2daz11 Thank you for checking out our auto repair channel on TH-cam.
@TheHillbillyRidge It may be the hub, or you may also want to take a look at the suspension pieces to see if anything is broke or worn out.
@hoodlumatic Glad we could help you out. We sell these bearings on our website 1aauto.com
Does it have 4 wheel ABS or rear wheel ABS?
@5150crazyman Thank you for checking us out. We carry a great variety of repair parts for your Dodge Durango on 1aauto.com
@randyusmc Thank you for watching. There's a link to that part on our website in the info. section of the video. If you need them for your vehicle.
@MoparMadness93 You have to slide the axle out to get the hub off.
It depends on the hourly rate. It may take them around 1 1/2 hours/side.
For anyone that is disassembling a Dakota or Durango but plan to reuse the hub/bearing unit and easy way to remove it is to loosen the hubs bolts about 3/4 of the way out and then use a hammer to smack the bolt heads. It will force the hub out of it's bore without distorting it. Then you can remove the bolts completely and pull it out.
It will help keep the axle in place so that you can properly torque the axle nut.
We'll keep this request in mind in the event that we need to make this repair in the future.
Scratching my head on how to torque the axle nut... then "wont torque it till the vehicle is on the ground" - slaps forehead -
Thank you!
Thank you for visiting our auto repair channel on TH-cam.
Yes, that is all correct.
Axle removal is necessary to gain access to the hub bolts.
It should take you about 45min-1 hour per side.
Sorry I botched up my question up a little bit I apologize. I know 2WD vehicles do not have transfer-cases I don't think I said that. I always understood a differential was to accommodate the travel distance when turning a vehicle like how a outside tire travels more than the inside tire. So I guess differentials are only used in the rear where the output of the engine connected threw a drive-shaft is located and vehicles that are front wheel drive have built in differentials in transmission?
I have a 2000 durango that I am trying to change the studs on. Does the hub need to come off, to change the studs? I can't seem to find enough space to clear the studs.
HI Mike, You might need to remove the hub from the steering knuckle, if there's no way to rotate the front of the hub bearing assembly so that you can remove a broken or stripped stud. We carry new wheel bearing hub assemblies on our website with a 2 year warranty and FREE SHIPPING in the lower 48 states. Here's a link to them on our website. Hope this helps you out. www.1aauto.com/1A/front-wheel-bearings-and-hubs/Dodge/Durango/-/-/2000??VideoReply&TH-cam&ATony
Will it wreck your studs if you use the pry bar as a way to keep the axle from spinning while loosening or tightening the bolts? I have a 1991 Plymouth Laser and it makes a knocking noise only when i turn my wheel all the way to the right, as soon as i depress the clutch it stops. Not exactly sure if its the wheel hub bearing or not? please help, thank you!
I guess I didn't make myself clear......Installing a new bearing into the old hub..I see the video shows everything one needs to know regarding the removal of the hub & bearing.
Do you have an instructional video that shows how to put a new bearing into the original hub...Re-installing the assembly is obviously the reverse of removing it...Thanks....
@TheHillbillyRidge Thank you for checking us out Jimmy. Have a great weekend!
You're welcome. Have a great day.
ok i have a question my Durango has been making a loud airplane noise every time i drive. Also it gets worst as speed increases there is another problem but not sure if this is caused by the same problem it jerks randomly from time to time while driving is this or would this be caused by the wheel bearings and if so what do you suggest i do is this a immediate fix needed to be done asap or could i wait? Thanks
@1aauto....WOW, just briefly looked up my part on your website....AWESOME PRICES!!! How can I determine if I have 4 wheel disc brakes? I don't see any wires to ANY of the brake calipers....FRONT or REAR....but it does have ABS. Also with my noise I have had my brake light AND abs light come on twice, does that help pin point any problems??? THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your help!!! I will be ordering parts from you when I can determine what is needed. TAKE CARE
Oh yea....the reason I know something is going bad: I can also hear the rumbling noise going back a dirt road, however that blacktop produces a louder rumble, is this something to be concerned about? I have 4 wheel disc brakes. I have felt the rim and backside area from the side that appears to be making the noise and it isn't even Warm after driving down the highway around 50 mph
Ok...dumb question.... where are the FRONT ABS sensors located on a 02 durango slt, 4 X 4, 4.7L
Didn't see it mentioned but I've got a 2002 Dakota 4x4 and it doesn't have those 6 bolts holding the half-shaft on, I have to find some way to pry it away without being able to beat it out from the back. Also, for some reason mine had a T47 on the top of the caliper and some kind of allen head on the bottom, and 14mm holding the hub on
Hi,
I'm wondering how we change out the wheel bearing in the hub on a 1999 dakota with no abs on the front...
There is quite a difference in the cost of a bearing and the hub assembly..with the bearing in it.
I've had a bad experience with certain cheap brand front end parts so I'll ask if you can recomment the best front bearings to use for the 1999 Dakota?
Thank you...
Really appreciate you guys, do you have a video changing the FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS for either a 1993 Dodge Shadow or Dodge Spirit?? Thanks, Thanks!
I looked on your site with wheel bearings and idk which one I'm to get my truck has 4WD and ABS.....so could you tell me the part number I'm suppose to get that way I buy the right one......I don't want to spend an arm a leg since I go back to college in 2 weeks
Quick question guys. own a 98 dakota, as I accelerate I hear a chirping sound like a bird. it quickens as i speed up or slows as i slow down. I recently changed the UJoints as I thought that could be a problem. Do you think this procedure would do the trick in getting rid of that? Thanks for the time.
Hey Im about to replace both front wheel hubs on a 2006 chevy silverado....The original hubs look awfully covered in rust...would you recommend buying brake dust covers also? I just dont want to go to the mechanic, have them take off the hub, and tell me I need additional parts that rusted away.
On the drivers side front wheel on my 04 dodge dakota has a hum to it the last few day. and when going up my driving i hear a low knock as that tire is turned slightly up my driveway. whats do u think it is. it was also a lil hard to turn but that has now stoped
Ok....THANKS for monitoring your video and replying so promptly to all the questions!! THANKS for your advice and expertise. Could it be the axle? Do I have to remove the axle on the Dakota Quad Cab or does the hub just slide off? THANKS A BUNCH!!!! Jimmy
is this really a hard thing to do the auto shop wants 325.00 to do this i dont have most of the tools needed can u rent the tools needed are do u think i should just leave it the the mec
Quick question, I'm tackling this... this weekend. I've got the 4x4 with 2 wheel ABS... do I need to take the axle out? or is that just something that makes it easier?
When changing out the hub and cv axle do you have to realign the vehicle after the work is performed?
No, but if you had a really bad front wheel hu and you have diiven on it for awhile it wouldnt hurt to get it checked.
Great video and thanks! Only question I have is about greasing the new hub assembly (packing the bearings and such). Did you do it off camera or how and when is it done properly if it's done at all? Thanks in advance!
I need to change my passenger side bushings on my 2000 durango 2wd, looks exactly like this one on the video.. Will i need a compressor? Please Help.
Do you have to remove the axle to replace the assembly or didyou just choose to
Apparently My 2000 Durango is odd because my brake calipers are held on by 7mm hex bolts vs the t47 in the vid and the hub is held by 3 9/16 bolts vs the 22mm
I am sure you know that an extension will change torque values. The extension will twist taking up some of thesetting of the torque wrench. The one you are using looks to be 12 or14 inches, add maybe 5to10 extra on the wrench setting.
i own a 1998 Dakota, 33mm socket was too small had to use 1 1/2'' . Anyone else had this issue? Where my hubs different or not stock? What happened?
I'm seeing 120 ft lbs for LD hub and 130 ft lbs for HD hub.
Replacing the hub is the same thing as replacing the bearing? If you wanted to change just the bearing would you need a press?
Thank you I appreciate it but your answer created another question. How can you tell the difference in front axles from a differential. I know if there is a front T-Case then it's 4WD however doesn't
2WD have axles that insert into the front differential?
