I get to do this today. My rear driver's side window regulator crapped out yesterday. Little plastic clip holding the cable in place popped out, causing the cable to unspool, and left my window down. Just picked up a new regulator this morning and will be attacking this today. What fun! Then, hopefully next week I'll have time to deal with my spongy brakes. Already checked pads and shoes, they're good. Replaced and bled the fluid. Still spongy, replaced the master cylinder, bled the cylinder, and brake lines with new fluid... still spongy. These brakes are gonna kill me. If it wasn't my daily vehicle, I wouldn't be so worried about it. But it is, and these brakes scare the hell out of me every day. And considering it's a 2001 durango, no one wants to touch it here in Northern California. 😠

WOW This video was Great! My Durango window has been broken for 2 years and I was very tired of using tape to hold it up! Almost considered paying a guy $300 to fix it. I Was very worried about trying to replace it being I have never done repairs like this But your video made it simple and easy to follow and made me feel better about replacing it my self. @james08diaz You may have a broken or frayed wire in the harness between the door and the body of the vehicle. I would look there to see if this is the issue.
@iowabowtech1 Maybe have someone hold the window in place while you unbolt the regulator from the door. Then it might drop down enough to get at the bolts. Then you could slide the glass back up into place.
If you are replacing the window regulator, you can cut the wires and slowly lower the window to the correct spot so you can access the bracket holding the glass. You will need to have either someone hold the glass for you will you do this or prop up the bracket so the window doesn't come crashing down when you cut the wires.
The front door drivers side window fell down when I took my 1998 Dodge Durango to the car wash. Now the window will not go back up. I took the Durango to Dodge dealer and they charged my $147.00 just for a diagnostic to determine that it needed a new regulator and they said the motor and regulator had to be changed as an assembly as the regulator can not be changed without replacing the motor also. I am not sure if that's true or not. So now the price to fix the window will be $550.00 plus the $147.00 for the diagnostic that probably took them about 30 seconds to do. I thought that was ridiculous to pay $700 dollars to change a $35.00 part so after watching this video I can see how the dealer was a total rip off. Thanks to you I can do this job my self and save over $500.00. Thank you so much.
Update I just completed the job and it was a piece of cake for this 67 yo man thanks to your very detailed video. Don't know why I even bothered to take my car to the dealer. I should have watched your video first and I never would have. I have done a lot of mechanical work over the years but I had never worked on electric windows before somehow I thought it would be harder than it was. After watching your video I knew I could do it. Thanks so much you help a lot of people save some of their hard earned money.
The Durango and the Dakota share the exact same window regulators for the quad cab models so the vehicle you were viewing is exactly what you will need to do.

Thanks for this video. It helped me to change my own window regulator. Here are a couple of notes that may help the next person. For my 2001 Durango SLT front passenger side (has the fancy stereo w/ extra speakers): - The speaker in the lower-front of the door has to be removed to free up the water barrier sheet. - The water barrier sheet in my Durango was held on with weatherstripping adhesive. It can be freed by pulling it back a bit at a time and cutting the adhesive that clings to it with a box cutter or similar. The adhesive will stay stuck to either the door or the barrier sheet. - To disconnect the door handle and lock actuating arms, pull the end of the white part away from the arm (unstraighten it) and lift the arm out of it rather than messing with where those white parts pivot in the black brackets - this way is much easier as the pivots have little tabs that spring out which you'd have to compress to follow the instructions in the video. - To loosen the lower-rear bolt on the regulator, you have to put the socket into the door and then push the extension through the hole in the door sheet metal to meet the socket, as the socket won't fit through the hole in the sheet metal. (an alternative is to just use a wrench on that one) - The replacement regulator cannot be tested (passenger side) unless the window switch on that side is temporarily connected. (i.e. the driver-side switch doesn't work without the passenger side connected)

My window tends to sink down all the way to the bottom and its not working with the motor to roll down, and some grey wire cord from inside looks to loose so im stuck on this part.
Great video, but what if the window is stopped in the up position? I have power to the switch, the switch works (drivers rear is the only window not working, I plugged the switch into the passenger rear and it worked fine). The window is all the way up and I don't see a way to lower it to get at the bolts holding the window to the regulator. Any way to lower the window manually?

I can't get the window down far enough to access the 2 bolts holding the window to the regulator bracket. I've tried forcing it down by hand and using the existing motor to no avail. What can I do in this case to get the window unhooked?? Really struggling here. I plan to use a regulator with new motor (entire assembly) to make it easy since I'm a beginner.
Very usefull, i have a 2003 Chrysler Town & Country and yesterday the drivers power windows just stops working. i don't know what happened, i check the relays at the front power module under the hood and everything is ok, so then i removed the buttons control panel at the dor to see if the button is broken but, again, everythin is fully opperational. do you or someone else here can help me to know what is going on with my power window? and how to fix that? I will apreciate any help with this.
Okay so i have an issue where the wires connect.... My dad was trying to take out the old window regulator and he broke the little red lock piece. But thats not the problem because i got that out easy watching your video. The problem is unplugging the conection. Its almost as if the plug is stuck. Is there a way to disconnect that?

I have a spare rear door with all the guts in my storage, but its the front window regulator on my kids truck that's broken. @iowabowtech1 ok, all done. I ended up cutting the black coated vertical running cable that leads to the pulley at the top of the assembly. After that, the window eased down into place for easy bolt removal. Just be careful to support the window afterward. Worked like a champ and the whole job went smooth as butter. Thanks man!!

You don't zoom in, you really don't know what your doing by watching I only have a vague idea. It helps but you could have at least held up the part in front of the door to show us how it sits in there behind the metal. A drawing of the inside. I am not a mind reader. This film helps and I am glad you did it but it could be a lot better. You assume to much that the veiwer has more knowledge then most of us do. And it is totally blind installation. Come on try a little harder to make a better film please and someone on the camera.

@1aauto wow, thanks for the fast reply! I was thinking that might be a possibility also. Have you ever tried cutting existing cables since they'll be replaced anyway? I feel like one might be binding in a pulley somewhere in order to create almost full resistence like I'm experiencing. I feel very comfortable with this repair IF I could just get the window low enough to get at those 2 bolts!

I have a 97 Dakota with a 5.2l 318. My interior lights don't turn off when I shut my door every time. I have to repeatedly shut my door until it turns off when I drive and when I park I have to disconnect my battery so the battery isn't drained when I come back. I replaced the door switches already and it work for a little while but now it's worse than before. When I push the switch and the light stays on there is a click noise that comes from behind the glove box. When I push it until the light goes off it clicks but it sounds different when it goes off. I've been told it is a module but the parts store says I have to take everything apart to find out what kind it is. Do you think this is the right diagnosis and can you do a video showing the replacement of this part?
You may want to check that circuit to see if there's a frayed wire that may need to be repaired, or a faulty relay. You may be able to pull the fuse on that circuit, so that it does not keep draining the battery until you can get it fixed. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Last time the mechanic was around $175 which I thought fair considering parts + labor. This time I did it myself for $95 (tax included and following your step by step it took me about an hour (even going back and forth from the car to your video and back). You may need to loosen the cables if they are keeping the window jambed in the up position. Sometimes this will happen if a cable breaks.
If theres some type of clip or tab holding it in place, once that's removed you should be able to take it apart.
You would have to test the connection coming out of the switch itself to see if you are getting power when the switch is triggered.
The Durango and the Dakota share the exact same window regulators for the quad cab models so the vehicle you were viewing is exactly what you will need to do.
You may want to check the window regulator to see if that wire have broken off of it.
The front and the rear are not the same unfortunately.

great tip on painter tape. I use suction cups. but painter tape can be handy for diyer.

Is it possible the window could just be off track without replacing the regulator? My motor is still working when I hit the button...

You don't zoom in, you really don't know what your doing by watching I only have a vague idea. It helps but you could have at least held up the part in front of the door to show us how it sits in there behind the metal. A drawing of the inside. I am not a mind reader. This film helps and I am glad you did it but it could be a lot better. You assume to much that the veiwer has more knowledge then most of us do. And it is totally blind installation. Come on try a little harder to make a better film please and someone on the camera.

If you take the door panel off and the window doesn't go up , does it mean the problem isn't the regulator? I can still hear the motor though. Please help?

@1aauto wow, thanks for the fast reply! I was thinking that might be a possibility also. Have you ever tried cutting existing cables since they'll be replaced anyway? I feel like one might be binding in a pulley somewhere in order to create almost full resistence like I'm experiencing. I feel very comfortable with this repair IF I could just get the window low enough to get at those 2 bolts!

I have a 97 Dakota with a 5.2l 318. My interior lights don't turn off when I shut my door every time. I have to repeatedly shut my door until it turns off when I drive and when I park I have to disconnect my battery so the battery isn't drained when I come back. I replaced the door switches already and it work for a little while but now it's worse than before. When I push the switch and the light stays on there is a click noise that comes from behind the glove box. When I push it until the light goes off it clicks but it sounds different when it goes off. I've been told it is a module but the parts store says I have to take everything apart to find out what kind it is. Do you think this is the right diagnosis and can you do a video showing the replacement of this part?
You may want to check that circuit to see if there's a frayed wire that may need to be repaired, or a faulty relay. You may be able to pull the fuse on that circuit, so that it does not keep draining the battery until you can get it fixed. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Sounds like the ECM could be bad. Electronic Control Module, its a little black box behind and to the right of the glove box...
on my 987 dodge dakota the window goes up on a angle so Im guessing its the regulator ?

Thank you so much for posting this video. Only wish your parts store was in my town. My durango has had this issue twice over 185K miles. Last time the mechanic was around $175 which I thought fair considering parts + labor. This time I did it myself for $95 (tax included and following your step by step it took me about an hour (even going back and forth from the car to your video and back). 'm wondering what made the cable snap in the first place, but never the less, May God bless you business!
