Maddy Prior really enjoying herself here great singer and Gay Woods just got into the folk/rock music because of Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention [Sandy Denny my fav.] The Strawbs and Lindisfarne amazing music.THANK YOU ALL.
A flick of the eyes, you're right hilarious. However, she is the consummate performer. Kay Wood though stars with her voice rather than her personality and dancing. What a band!!!
My favourite Steeleye line up apart from the original first album. I saw them several times during the Time tour. Gay Woods added so much. The segue into Peter Knight’s fiddle is brilliant.
This is a great version, of this song. I didn't know they sang it' at all. Maybe that's the magic, of the internet. You can find all sorts of rare and interesting music, on it.
Tim Harries on bass has to be one of the most enthusiastic performers I've seen. Although more associated with jazz he was such a delightful addition to Steeleye and it would have been great had he continued.
Gay Woods provides the dominant vocal throughout this song and does all the harmony to boot. Steeleye Span was at it's best when she was a member, the mellow timbre and purity of her voice offset and complimented the nasal quality of Maddy's.
This is amazing. Really beautiful performance. I think that this is mimed as you say because Maddy misses at one stage and Gay stops singing before the track at another point. Great sound. Lovely!
Actually, Gay and Maddy were both original members of Span. "Hutchings' new band was formed after he met established duo Tim Hart and Maddy Prior on the London folk club scene, and the initial lineup was completed by husband and wife team Terry Woods (formerly of Sweeney's Men, later of The Pogues) and Gay Woods."
Greatness! Maddy Prior and Gay Woods doiung a traditional song dating back more than 300 years? The garrett is like an attic, a much lower cost to rent.
That's what I call dancing with joy! They all get into the reel! Gay on bodran, and Peter is a fantastic fiddle player, and even Tim Harries gets into the song!
Mimed? That explains a lot. I was wondering why the vocals sounded exactly the same. I think I saw them on this tour in Atlanta, in 1996? Hard to forget Maddie's happy dance! I swear they both wore the same outfits, but I'l likely remembering it from this video? So wonderfully done!
I liked Gay's vocals on tracks(softer voice than Maddy) she did and thought she harmonised well with Maddy. if I was being replaced as lead vocalist by someone else I'd be pretty fed up!!!!
Maddy always looks like she enjoys singing which is probably why her tone is always good.We were always told to smile during performances by our Music teachers. That said the two vocalists work great together no matter what the facial expressions are. Maybe Gay had something on her mind like The Electric Bill.
my mother 82 who i was listening asked me when doing a fry up on a Sunday and I asked if she knew what a garret was. She did even though from Ireland. Talk to ur old parents etc pls.
What a great performance! Wish I had ben there. And Maddie Prior was revelling in it. She's such a natural and her voice is faultless. Thanks for uploading it!
That's got to be the best version of both songs I've heard! Although it has to be said, Maddy looks like she's having the time of her life, while Gay looks like she's having her teeth pulled....
Gay, who has a beautiful voice and who was an original band member, had been asked to help because Maddy was having trouble with her voice. Then she was told to keep inthe background and not draw attention to herself! No wonder she looked annoyed!
The first time I heard this song it was Anna McGoldrick singing it on Opportunity Knocks in 1969. And never heard it again until the Internet came along.
Da** when did they play in Austin? I lived there for several years & am now just down the road in San Antonio. If I'd known that Steeleye Span was playing there I would have found some way to see them
I notice, that if you go on-line, more often than not this song is claimed to be of Irish origin. It almost certainly isn't. Its more likely Scottish. Not all that unusual as Irish folkies have a habit of claiming virtually everything as Irish. The song found its way into the Irish repertoire possibly through seasonal agricultural workers from Donegal who used to come over to Scotland at harvest times for work. I've heard a very good version of the song by an Irish band which pretty much states that clearly. The only problem I have with this version is that it sounds a bit anglicised. When my Ma and her pal, Aggie, used to sing it the first line went "Lang be it said by ma faither and ma mither, 'tae gang tae a waddin is the makins o' anither.' " and it went on like that in pretty broad Scots. Having written that one of the earliest printed sets of lyrics appear to be English from the 17th century.
Tam Lin is one of my all time fave tunes But hearing it as the outro here, Makes me wonder if they chose to pitch Old Maid at that low key ? What's the song the cailíní sing at the end to TamLin ? iwonders ..... Happy dancing from the red gal lifts the heart ❤️
This particular gig was recorded especially for the VHS, and they decided to mime the whole album for that purpose. It'd have to be the one and only time they ever did so.
@CookieOfTheHousie Yep, the VHS has all the Time tracks. :) Though last I saw, I think Prickly Bush was playing up on this copy. I'll prob put them all up over time as it were, but my monthly limit isn't huge and includes uploads - so not for a while...!
I saw this line-up in Adelaide (or Ipswich) and thought that although she has a great voice, Gay Woods wanted to be somewhere else. She looked miserable through the gig. And it isn't the record...They certainly were not miming when I saw them!!
Good Lord, what a wonderful song and performance! But why is Gay so sad? In all the clips that can be found of this concert, she never seems to be happy... Maybe this is her style of performing on stage?
A possible reason is that she is singing counterpoint harmony to Maddie's lead. Lead vocal can be considerably easier, with harmony requiring more concentration and focus. And sometimes tunes can seem deceptively simple where in actuality, the harmonies can be quite complex.
I doubt I've ever seen anyone enjoying what they do so much. Maddy Prior is unique. A voice from heaven into the bargain. Priceless.
Fab folk song, I love it! Full of energy and humour; Wonderful performance
Love Peter Knight's fiddle playing here.
Great BUT he is always a miserable sod
Don’t ya just want to give a big hug to Gay Woods in that outfit? Ah, then there is the always energetic Mandy doing her dancing! Top shelf ladies!
Maddy may be the energy. But Gay woods is why i am here. Love her.
Here for Maddy
Great song and great lead singing of both Woods and Prior!
Brilliant, Maddy Was as mad as a box of frogs in the seventies and I'm pleased to say she still is.Great.
peter fisher gamble gold and robin hood agree.
Great voices - wonderful fiddle solo. Always been one of my favourite Steeleye songs.
Maddy Prior really enjoying herself here great singer and Gay Woods just got into the folk/rock music because of Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention [Sandy Denny my fav.] The Strawbs and Lindisfarne amazing music.THANK YOU ALL.
Maddy Prior in her weird 60's curtain dress and leather space boots make me feel less self conscious at Walmart these days. Love them
Always thought they looked like they just enjoyed and loved what they were doing all credit to them never sold out
Tam Lin's reel my favorite fiddle tune!
And that my friends is the difference between a singer and an entertainer, (just bloody marvelous)
Always enjoyed this song. I was named after Maddy.
An bhfuil tu are buille?😂😂
An bhfuil tu ar buille?😂😂😂
Maddie dressed in our old curtains thoroughly enjoying what she is doing. Thank you Maddie from the bottom of my heart, just for never changing.
I always thought they were my nana's curtains.
Maddy is so joyous it makes me smile.
Tom petty
Gay on the other hand looks like she'd rather be dead than on stage.
Always struggled for one word to describe Maddy Prior, joyous is perfect. Thank you.
An Absolute Belter of a Song! I love Steeleys Span,Followed them since 1975.Thanks For Posting!
Maddy Prior's expression at "here am I at forty-four"... hilarious!
pottram aye, saucy mare
A flick of the eyes, you're right hilarious. However, she is the consummate performer. Kay Wood though stars with her voice rather than her personality and dancing. What a band!!!
@@desallen2174 Gay Woods
Mea culpa Gay.
What a great song.
Great performance - In Scotland our girls sing If I dee an old maid in the garret :)
It is a Scottish song of course.
My favourite Steeleye line up apart from the original first album. I saw them several times during the Time tour. Gay Woods added so much. The segue into Peter Knight’s fiddle is brilliant.
So much fun, and awesomely good (as always) fiddling by Knight.
Maddy is the performer and the visual center , but Gay is the musical center with a powerful lead .
Gay has a fabulous voice.
Gay ist THE voice of Steeleye in that era
YA STILL GOT IT MADDY,thank you.
Hello from the US. This is fab!! Maddy looks so happy!
All class.......love it
Nothing sounds quite like Peter Knight fiddling. Great vid. Thanks.
This is a great version, of this song. I didn't know they sang it' at all. Maybe that's the magic, of the internet. You can find all sorts of rare and interesting music, on it.
Michael Dineen its on the time cd
Best Steeleye line-up ever.
I've known about Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention for many years. Why have I never heard of this sensational group until today? Lord, forgive me.
Look on the bright side, you have a huge trove of good music to explore!
a gift for you - Mandolin Orange
You are forgiven, welcome to the club!
Beautiful! Gay hitting the Bodhran with her hand. Maddie so full of energy. Just fantastic!
It is the only way to play the damn thing!!!
@@BodhranBrian No, you can also use a little double-ended stick called a "tipper" or "cipin". That's what Kevin Conneff of The Chieftains does.
Where on earth is the wonderful Bob Johnson, not even a flash of.him , surely he was in this lineup . A brilliant guitarist and arranger much missed .
Tim Harries on bass has to be one of the most enthusiastic performers I've seen. Although more associated with jazz he was such a delightful addition to Steeleye and it would have been great had he continued.
Indeed , superb bass player , shame he did not stay , I have seen and heard him in other settings , always excellent.
This is wonderful! The violin solo is mesmerizing
it's not a solo, it's a reel
Gay Woods provides the dominant vocal throughout this song and does all the harmony to boot. Steeleye Span was at it's best when she was a member, the mellow timbre and purity of her voice offset and complimented the nasal quality of Maddy's.
so love this , love maddy , and gay , [upfliting , maddy dancing
Love Gay Woods
This is amazing. Really beautiful performance. I think that this is mimed as you say because Maddy misses at one stage and Gay stops singing before the track at another point. Great sound. Lovely!
Maddy when she dances oh the joy! I love Steeleye Span.
Love watching this, Maddy is such a joy to see dancing
Ralph McTell wrote a song about her called "When Maddie Dances".
The band is immortal.....Maddy Prior has a voice .....40 years and still fresh.
Gay Woods must be my favourite folk singer ever!!
They had a good singer and replaced her with a better one!
Gay has a wonderful voice.
mady sure puts her haert into it brill tune they are still brill
Saw this line up in Leamington. Amazing! Time has to be one of their best albums ever. I love Steely Span.
Saw this line-up in Malvern, tiny venue, great atmosphere, and agree Time is a great album.
I love this band, I love this song and Maddy's dress style, that velvet jacket is gorgeous.
Usually wears what I call my grandma's curtains. However, band and song fabulous. Great to see and hear Gay up front again.
thats the way to perform a number, great! great!!!!
I saw them do this live in Louisville, Kentucky during the "Time" tour. Great performance.
Love that Tam Lin reel!
Steeleye Span, a wonderful wonderful group.

loved this song years ago by span.love it now by new span.
We,ve grown old together and they have not l;ost any of their cutting folk sound.
Gay and Maddy will never "die an old maid in the garret." What a great twosome. Rest of the band were pretty good too.
go maddy youre a star hun xxx

Wow, I want some of what she's got! She looks so happy, so fun. Good stuff!
Gaye Woods an under rated singer.
Gay is fabulous and, in combination with Maddy, is incomparable.
She sure is. Maddy dancing like a lunatic, as usual. Gay playing the bodhran, singing superbly and looking stunning as usual. Great combination.
Under appreciated maybe, never underrated!
Maddy Prior is bloody wonderful.
I agree Maddy really looks happy there. Take a peek at Maddy and Status Quo doing All Around My Hat. Now that is a happy Maddy
it is a joy to see
Maddy's diggin' it!
Excellent ! Dance me to the end of love !!!
Ah. Miming. I *thought* it sounded exactly like the studio recording. Great, great song in any case, marvelously performed!
No, this isn't miming. An album was videotaped using mime, but not this one.
my mother 82 who i was listening asked me when doing a fry up on a Sunday and I asked if she knew what a garret was. She did even though from Ireland. Talk to ur old parents etc pls.
What a great performance! Wish I had ben there. And Maddie Prior was revelling in it. She's such a natural and her voice is faultless. Thanks for uploading it!
I recently heard a song by the great folk singer Ralph McTell that was dedicated to Maddy and her fondness for dancing. It really shows here.
That's got to be the best version of both songs I've heard! Although it has to be said, Maddy looks like she's having the time of her life, while Gay looks like she's having her teeth pulled....
Or like she's already died an old maid in the garrett!

wonderful! was just listening to the cd earlier... this is a treat!
My mothers party song when I was a child, her name was Jean
Yes I wondered why Gay Woods didnt stay on. with the group.I enjoy hearing her voice on my various CDs.
she had a pretty rough patch of time for a while preceding this show...break a heart it would~~
Martin Carthy was involved at the time and pushed Terry and therefore Gay Woods out. Maddie wasn’t too keen on competition either!
That's Gay Woods, who was the original vocalist for Steeleye Span before she was replaced by Maddy. There's a good biography of Gay in wikipedia.

I heard a local group do the "naughty" version of "Old Maid in the Garrett." They just changed one word at the very end to carrot.
great attack by gay woods on this vocal .
Someone said that the Tam Lin Reel reminded them of a tornado touching down on a prairie fire.
Tam Lin is one of my all time fave tunes

Makes me wonder if they chose to pitch
Old Maid at that low key ?

Happy dancing from the red gal lifts the heart ❤️
the only problem with this terrific song, is that it's not at all plausible that Maddy Prior "never had an offer" at age 44 (or 24, or 64...)
This particular gig was recorded especially for the VHS, and they decided to mime the whole album for that purpose. It'd have to be the one and only time they ever did so.
