In an age when bands seem to come and go in the blink of an eye, an occasion such as a thirty fifth anniversary is one that just has to be marked. Such it was for Steeleye Span, who decided to celebrate the best way they know how - by taking their music of the people to the people across the country. With a line-up featuring names from every period of the band’s illustrious history, the music captured here also reflects every aspect of their stunning career - from their earliest adventures into electric folk through to their commercial heyday and latter work. This is not only the first time that all these individual personalities have been in the same band at the same time, it is also the first time that the magic of Steeleye Span in concert has been caught especially for DVD. Let the celebrations begin….

Could listen to my favourite Steeleye tracks all night, but one night is no enough, there are so many.
Will never stop loving and listening to Steeleye Span Maddy's voice is amazing, this song gives me goosebumps, I'm 61 today, on my own so their music will keep me company.

This is one of their most enchanting songs (almost in the direct literal sense) (I feel enchanted when hearing it). Their other most enchanting one (for me anyway) is Hind Horn. They also provide very singable versions of both. The old ballad versions can be harder to sing along with, especially if you are not a singer or not that familiar with older styles of music, or both.
I thought I was familiar with older styles of music, but most versions of Tam Lin, I really can't sing them or even sing along with them. This one is much more easy to sing.
@@KittyStarlight Same here. 52. Heard them first in childhood, my happiest time, when my dad had a folk-rock band and did many covers. The comfort they give me still is remarkable.

I knew the story/ballad of Tam Lin since about age nine but did not know Steeleye Span then and did not know they had a version of this song until 2016.
This particular version has become one of my favorites, partly because it is one of the most singable by ordinary people who were born in the 20th century (or 21st by now for some of those younger folks).
The traditional ballad with the old traditional music is generally not very easy to sing if you were not born yet hundreds of years ago.
So I was delighted to discover this version. It is also very inspiring the way Maddy performs it. She is so good at this sort of thing. ^___^
Have heard Fairport Convention's version but I tend to find theirs a bit boring compared to this one, and certainly not nearly as lively.
To my knowledge there isn't really anyone else who ever has done this song quite like this.
And of course Steeleye Span has (and Maddy has) a lot of other great songs too! ^____^
To anyone: Some people love this because they love Steeleye Span, whereas I love Steeleye Span because I love this.
Going by my age range I *could* have known them since childhood but I actually didn't.
Doesn't really matter how or when we found them, though. The point is, we found them. Right? ^___^
THEY HAVE STOOD TEST OF TIME. UNLIKE TODAYS FOOLS. THEY HAVE TALENT VOICES AND CAN PLAY. IMAGINE THAT. HOPE THEY ARE ALL MILLIONAIRES.

That middle section (taken from a Bulgarian folk tune, IIRC) always gets to me. And I like Peter Knight's lilting violin over the lead and bass guitars (and of course, Maddy's soaring voice) which is inspired
I think I prefer the version on Tonight's the Night (Live), but maybe that's because I'm more used to it, having it played a fair few times!

I remember hearing a recording of the original Bulgarian folk tune (played on some sort of Bulgarian bagpipes) and the middle section of Tam Lin was just about recognisable if you listened hard. According to an interview with Maddy Prior, Bob Johnson was good at finding obscure folk tunes and making Steeleye Span hits out of them.

I had the pleasure once to ask an actress at the theater in downtown Denver where she had gotten her song that she sang as a lullaby in the play Desire Under the Elms several years earlier, and she said, "Fancy you remembering that" and then she said that it came from her Armenian heritage and that the words of it were something about roses. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Anyway I do like when people like to combine different folk cultures and that sort of thing.
And I had been aware for a while that for some reason or other Steeleye Span's version of Tam Lin has two tunes and that I never did know where the other one came from.

I can't sing that part nearly as well but it is interesting and intriguing to listen to with that tune.
Sort of eerie which suits the story very well.
I do now suppose that is why they used it.

Great version by Fairport but, wonderful as she was, Sandy lacked Maddie's powerful voice not to mention sheer presence on a a stage. Sometimes comparisons can be odious. Hey ho my dear old thing, each to their own. Let's raise a glass to both.
Cannot agree, Maddy's voice is absolutely unparalleled. Love the original Fairport and can't lament Sandy's untimely death enough.

@@desallen2174 It is all a matter of opinion and taste, of course, but I happen to think that there are very few voices that compare to Sandy Denny's. Maddy is a competent singer, but no way does her interpretation of this song come even close to Sandy's, either technically or emotionally.

Some of the villains are sometimes not very intelligent.
Again, this is usually lucky for those that are fighting against them.
Easier to outsmart them if they're actually (or at least possibly) not really very smart. 😉
Much more familiar w F C version. This is very different. I've heard S S also do another version, long ago. This sound fine, but; it misses the dark mark that the full epic poem conveys. I have enjoyed them in concerts - miss Maddy`s dancing through the audience. - Than can do dark quite well, Alyson Gross, Parcel of Rogues Came ye o frae France. light sound= Calling-On Song... 8 different l-p plus much more in my collection. Sixties & 1st half Seventies spawned such quantities of quality born of dedication to the craft v the cash.

Steeleye Span reminds of those C&W performers in the USA who can fill an auditorium of ten + thousand and then go to a place with fifty or 100 patrons and perform there.

Not too bad but this doesn't come close to Fairport Convention's version. Much better musicianship and it's hard to beat Sandy Denny.

Don't be daft! Sandy Denny sang with Fairport Convention, among aothers, and died years ago.
