The UK Bossa Nova renaissance in 1984 was a glorious time, Sergio Mendes Astrid Gilberto Ton Jobim Sivuca all getting airplay on the pirate stations, with Sade Matt Bianco and EBTG getting in the pop charts with this little gem.. this one stuck with me all this time, takes me right back to the summer of 84..

1984 was a great year for music in general; "Breakin' Down (sugar samba) Julia & Co. "PYT" Michael Jackson. "Automatic" Pointer Sisters. And these were just the Yanks!
The British releases were as good - Some even better; "Pray Like Aretha Franklin" Scritti Politti. "Down on the street" Shakatak. "Dial 999" Loose Ends.
And some Style Council.
Tracey Thorne and her effortless style. I imagine that Ms. Thorne doesn't walk - she glides.

They weren't some unknown band, they got worldwide radio play practically every year since their first release... they didn't chart, big bloody deal, millions upon millions know who they are and have fond memories of THEM. Ben never gets enough credit nor their numerous other musicians that would take part. Show some bloody respect... they didn't slip thru the cracks, their so called "return" (tho, truly never really went away) gained international attention and did quite well.

4am I walk in my kitchen, I’m half asleep and on my radio there’s this fantastically smooth tune playing, I Shazammed it, learned it was by EBTG and bought the tune. To add to my astonishment this was released in 1984.
Still my favorite EBTG song ... Tracey's voice is haunting.

Found this song randomly on Spotify. Didn't know who they were or what the song was, so I saved it. And then it popped up the next day and I started listening to it more and more and just fell I love with the music. Little surprises in life

Bosco D'Oliveira on congas went on to found the London School of Samba. A great percussion teacher who taught a lot of us to play Brazilian Samba. A match made in heaven with Tracy Thorn and Ben Watts

I liked this song so much when it had airplay in 1984... College kid. I got my first ever speeding ticket while blasting it in my car. I was lost in this incredible groove.

This feels like a song specifically created to make the 80s seem amazing and nostalgic, kinda like it was a part of the aesthetic movement, except it's actually from that era. And it's not even a city pop song or anything, it's just really really good.

No. No. NO. Bring back 80's music perhaps, because actually, it never really went away as people who liked it had recordings that they continued to play which then influenced another generation of musicians & music lovers. The era itself though? No Thanks. It was ten years fraught with poverty, anxiety, political suicide, anger, violence. OMGosh... If you lived through the 80's & want it revived you are either of fairly poor intelligence or you were wealthy for that decade and couldn't give a monkey's uncle for your fellow man.

Everything but the Girl are an English musical duo formed in Kingston upon Hull in 1982, consisting of lead singer, songwriter, composer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist, producer and singer Ben Watt. The group's early works have been categorized as sophisti-pop with jazz influences before undergoing an electronic turn following the worldwide success of the 1994 hit single "Missing". The duo have achieved four top 10 and 12 top 40 singles in the UK and have received eight gold and two platinum album BPI certifications in the UK as well as one gold album RIAA certification in the US. Their cover of "I Don't Want to Talk About It" reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart in 1988, a feat later matched by "Missing", which charted high in several countries and reached No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1995 and spent over seven months on the UK Singles Chart thanks to a popular remix by Todd Terry which led to a Brit Award nomination for Best British Single. Their ninth album Walking Wounded (1996) set a new career best by entering the UK albums chart at No. four, and spawned the top 10 singles "Walking Wounded" and "Wrong". The band went inactive in 2000, with Thorn declaring that she would no longer perform live. Thorn and Watt, who did not publicise their romantic relationship while active, married in 2009, both released solo albums and said it was unlikely Everything but the Girl would be active again.
