Age 17 in 1991 I was totally captured by the video and the sound. About to leave foster care as soon as I turned 18 to go it alone as a young adult into the unknown big wide world to live independently. Every lonely but strong purposeful stride Shara took as she walked those streets to the bitter sweet happy sad sound was symbolic of me at that time. It moved me back then and still moves me when I hear it today age 50. Still navigating through the streets of life. But then again, aren't we all.

You seem to have some grace and dignity for someone who went through the foster-"care" system.

One of the many reasons why this is a classic is that no other song has ever sounded remotely like it: the strings, the beat, the lyrics, the scratching and weird percussion sounds, but, most of all, Shara Nelson's unique vocals.
For me, it brings back memories of things that never happened.

A woman crossing the streets of a neighborhood, any given day. Around her, the world continues its course, people continue in the monotony of their lives, while she does not stop walking, as if this would ease her pain.
This is a work of art, timeless

In my humble opinion, the most beautiful piece of popular music in the last 30 years. It somehow manages to be cold, warm, mechanic and human at the same time. The brilliance of this song is that it combined the tradition of soul music with what was then an amazingly forward-looking style of music without sounding like a gimmick or a cliché. The beat, the samples, the scratching, the strings, Shara Nelson's voice, that heartbreaking vocal and the production... Everything here is about subtlety, balance and everything fitting together at the right time. And it's truly heartbreaking that Shara Nelson didn't have the career she deserved when you know she co-wrote this masterpiece.

But what scares me more... THAT IT IS at least 30 yrs ago now, when i just turned to a young adult. Where did time go? But glad for THAT experience...

Agree! The feel is very much like an opera aria - she's a gospel/soul singer but she has the soaring power and emotional depth in her voice that someone like Leontyne Price, Renée Fleming or Anna Netrebko can gather into the song, and the orchestra helps lift her to that "farewell" climax around two minutes in. 🎵🎶🙏

RIP Dan Kneece. The Steadicam operator for this music video. Dan explaining how he shot this: "This shot was done in the early 90's, long before Segways, with an Arri III, a 3 to 1 Cooke lens (heavy), a 400ft mag, I made it through 6 takes before I was totally exhausted and could do no more.." This filmclip always will remind me of my only holiday in the USA.
To be fair, I was a kid. From a naive Aussie family in '98. Now that I realise some of the areas we went to because, why not?. Didn't even have Travellors insurance. Really hope it was some Crips who "found" my Duty Free Winfield Blues.
LA and Mexico. Had a blast, us crazy Aussies. And everyone was chill in the US and Mexico. NO ONE gave us hustle.
Drank Jungle Juice with my brother in Tijuana.... And the worm turned us both....
      Stay Safe.

    "Unfinished Sympathy"
    [Verse 1: Shara Nelson]
I know that I've imagined love before
And how it could be with you
    [Chorus: Shara Nelson]
Really hurt me, baby, really cut me, baby
How can you have a day without a night?
You're the book that I have opened
And now I've got to know much more
    [Verse 2: Shara Nelson]
The curiousness of your potential kiss
Has got my mind and body aching
    [Chorus: Shara Nelson]
Really hurt me, baby, really cut me, baby
How can you have a day without a night?
You're the book that I have opened
And now I've got to know much more

This track very cleverly captures such soaring, vulnerable heights of emotion due to the string's key in F major, which was a favourite amongst classical composers, such as Bach. A very intelligent production, which will never lose it's timeless appeal due to its diverse influences that span hip hop, soul, classical and electronica. It really touches deep into the soul of all who behold its achingly-beautiful majesty. A modern masterpiece.

Wow... way off the mark... this is ostensibly in minor.... d minor.... not even close to G major... also: nothing indicates that JSBach liked or used G major more than any other key... as for other classical composers..... Beethoven certainly favoured Eb major, this is well known and documented. Mozart used D major a lot, G major is coming in at 6th place....

Unfinished Sympathy" is a song by the English trip hop group Massive Attack. It was released on 11 February 1991 under the temporary group name Massive.[1] The song was written by the three band members Robert "3D" Del Naja, Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall, the song's vocalist Shara Nelson and the group's co-producer Jonathan "Jonny Dollar" Sharp. It was released on 11 February 1991 as the second single from the band's first album, Blue Lines (1991), on the band's Wild Bunch label distributed by Circa Records.[2] The name "Massive" was used to avoid a radio ban, as the track's release coincided with the Gulf War. Produced by Massive Attack and Dollar, the song incorporates various musical elements into its arrangement, including vocal and percussion samples, drum programming and string orchestration by the arranger Wil Malone

"Unfinished Sympathy began as a fugitive melody floating around in Shara Nelson’s sub-conscious during the sessions for Blue Lines. When co-producer Jonny Dollar(Sharp) accidentally heard her humming the melody to herself, he urged her to sing it to him and loving the melody so much he hastily arranged a late-night jam in the studio - just a keyboard and drum machine with singer Shara Nelson extemporising her melody she had come up with on the day to music. Other Massive Attack members then began adding their own contributions to the song, with Mushroom’s DJ skills perhaps most notably adding that extra something to the song with his scratching and sampling qualities.
The billowly string arrangement, which was the final part of the puzzle was the brainchild of Jonny Dollar, who first laid down synthesized strings, then brought in a 40-piece string section to dupe the part, conducted by string arranger Will Malone in none other than the famous Abbey Road Studios in London."

    [Shara Nelson]
I know that I've been mad in love before
And how it could be with you
Really hurt me baby, really cut me baby
How can you have a day without a night
You're the book that I have opened
And now I've got to know much more
The curiousness of your potential kiss
Has got my mind and body aching
Really hurt me baby, really cut me baby
How can you have a day without a night
You're the book that I have opened
And now I've got to know much more

Some are caring for others, like the kissing couple, the man & kid, the friends at the nail salon... and the singer walks through those opposites, without a pause and with an incredible command of her own voice. In answer to previous comments about the 90s seeming more real, it's because we didn't have the internet. We couldn't sit down, click on TH-cam and watch stuff like this any time we wanted - we had to make the most of it while it was fresh and new, because pretty soon something else would come along, and the only way to carry on listening to a fantastic song like this was to buy a hard copy of an album on cassette or C.D. I'd forgotten about that sense of newness we used to love until I watched the T.F.I Friday revival with Chris Evans a few years ago: television was exactly the same - you had to grab it while it was going, or you'd miss so many unique moments forever...

Everything about this song is so incredibly timeless. The beat, the words, the simplicity yet the sheer effect of the video, the voice, and the uniqueness of it that really hits home when a person hears this tune for the first time with sheer astonishment that the songs is as old as it is. Pure genius.
