Still Worth it? Trek Roscoe 7: 1 Yr Later…

  • The current-gen #TREK #Roscoe 7 is a fantastic bike. Period. It’s a new frame with updated geometry and presents the perfect segway into the world of family mountain biking. Upgradeability is vital to the Roscoe 7. Budget is essential when considering #MTB, especially when you’re a #family of 4. I decided to save some money and get as much value as possible by purchasing some used components for half the price of MSRP. If you’re like me and you remain patient, you can score some good deals off the #PNW Components Loam 2 lever and the Gen 3 35mm Range handlebars. I usually see them throw around 20% off sales all throughout the year. Worldwide Cyclery is another good option for the budget-conscious MTB family. As of the recording of this video, they have an incredible 15% off sale going on that the Shimano Deore 6120’s are included in! I honestly believe that the #Shimano Deore BL-M6100 / BR-M6120 Hydraulic Disc Brake and Lever setup is undervalued and an excellent “budget” setup. Don’t forget to check out the links below and my PinkBike profile to pick up my stock components at a reasonable price too.

    Enjoyed the video, I've had my Roscoe 7 for a week, ridden it every day, I'm 5'8" and the knowledgeable guy in the shop I purchased from suggested 100% that I'd need a medium, I'm completely satisfied.
    I find I can one finger brake with the stock 2 pistons but I went through and set up all the positions of the brake, shifting and dropper levers so it feels intuitive when out riding.
    Something every owner of a Roscoe should check is if the rear derailleur hanger is in the correct position and is NOT loose, mine was moving around.

      Thank you! I really appreciate the compliment. I’m glad they recommended to grab a medium! My trek store is amazing but I preordered my bike after sitting on the last gen Roscoe (27.5, not 29er) that’s how I got “stuck” with my ML. If I had to suggest any upgrade that really changed the entire ride experience. It’s the XT shifter. It gives so much movement positive feedback and shifting is noticeably faster. If I had to do it all over again, knowing what I know now, XT would have been ordered before anything else. Thank you for watching. We really appreciate your support!!

    Great video man! Quick tip on the zip tie in the frame. Put the zip tie in first and don’t tighten the loop whilst it’s inside the frame. Thread in your new brake cables etc and it will go through the hoop you made with the zip tie inside the frame. When all done then pull the zip tie

    • @graysonmtb
      @graysonmtb  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Lol That stupid zip tie was the biggest PITA. The dropper and shift cable were already there so I had no choice but to work around it. I love your tip and thank you for sharing the knowledge!

    Hey great video, do you have anymore on upgrading your bike, how to switch the Deore shifter to XT step by step, that would be awesome. How hards that?

    I got my Rosco 7 on Friday and I really like it. I took it for a 3.5 hour ride yesterday the only problem I have is with the seat. I found it really uncomfortable to the point couldn’t ride it today so I have ordered the fluid comfort seat from trek.

      @graysonmtb  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh man. I was lucky. My sit bone was perfect for the stock seat. It still took a week or so to get use to! Have you measured your sit bone? Get a piece of cardboard, sit on it and measure from the center of the two deepest indents. Make sure the new seat will suffice!

    Looks sick. You should've gotten the 35mm Race face Atlas Bars look sick and absolutely no peeling. 💯👍

      @graysonmtb  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I’m pretty upset about the PNW’s. I never saw anyone else mention that as being an issue when I was making the decision. I will absolutely take a look into the atlas bars though. Thank you!

    Great video ! My first upgrade(Without pedals,grips and stuff) will probably be Bomber Z2 fork, if i manage to sell stock one. Later some better brake levers (kinda like the idea of short ones) Also will check maby some of old bike stuff fits, like bars and stem(ofc i will take grips and pedals). Have to check which one is better, new or my older(i just got them :D) FUNN

    Nice man. I can see you going to a full suspension. I did and man what a difference. But i will say one is not better than the other both are fun, but the full suspension will make you ride harder and faster than a hardtail

    • @graysonmtb
      @graysonmtb  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha I’m pretty sure full squish is in the near future! My intention is to build and hone my skills and then “Graduate” to full suspension and more technical trails

    I have a Roscoe 9, and it's a fun bike. Just swapped out the stock Bontrager tires for some Continental Argotal/Kryptotal tires, and they are noticeably better (and actually roll faster). I have the PNW dropper lever as well, it's nice but the bolt they use to clamp the cable is super cheap and strips easy (the Chinesium is getting worse lol). I went with a Raceface carbon bar, and cut that down to around 745mm or so (I'm 5'7").....sooooooo much better than the stock 780mm width, and the carbon is a bit more smooth on the rough stuff. I went with an XT shifter as well, which is nice. I did swap the stock dropper post for a OneUp, and that thing is a piece of junk......it constantly creaks when you sit and pedal, so need to figure out a replacement for it that has around the same size clamp area, as with the stock dropper post my seat sat a bit too far forward. Love the stock brakes, but after 500+ miles the pads are getting a bit noisy/not stopping on a dime like they used to, so might need a replacement soon. I think if I had to do it all over again, I'd prob get a new Fuel EX lol.

      I’m glad you said something because I was thinking about that same dropper! I’ve heard a lot of good things about the one droppers.

    Can you go out and explore the woods with the Roscoe or is it just for downhill?

    • @graysonmtb
      @graysonmtb  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question! The Roscoe is very much a general purpose hardtail. Unlike a downhill dedicated bike the geometry is comfortable enough for general trail use.

      I had the same issue at first. I had to adjust it out a little. If you bought it directly from TREK they should fit the bike to you for free 😉

      Haha great seeing you with your son bro. I can see your a great Dad💯 but yeah man that shifter is badass Got one on my giant trance 29er had the full Deore setup before. But like you I’m OCD so ended up getting the cassette and derailleur as well!🤦🏽 Stay strong bro! Trust me if your not already, you’ll be thinking about it!😂

      @joshuaallswang8016 damit! Now I gotta go setup alerts on PinkBike for the rest of the XT drivetrain 🤣🤣🤣thanks brother. I really appreciate that! I try to include him in everything I do and I suppose you could say that this TH-cam channel, in a way, is me showing him about learning, not being afraid to put yourself out there, and just what it’s like to build something from scratch. Thank you for your support!
