@SomeoneYDK 餘實恩 That's true, but American, British, Australian, and Canadian accents are considered the standard accents to learn from. OP is talking about what we know as a foreign accent. Think about how even in China, Mandarin speakers will have different accents. Those accents are all acceptable to learn from, but if foreigners like myself learn Mandarin, we will have a non-native accent to all Mandarin speakers. There's nothing wrong with having a foreign accent. It's just a fact of learning languages.

As I'm living in Malaysia(20years), Singapore(5years)and China(maybe the rest of my life) for a longtime, I think I have to said that, Malaysian entire Chinese level are much higher than Singapore ,indeed there's always a joke for the billboards or road signs spelling wrongly in Chinese at the public tourist places for many times due to the Malay official using the google Translator and become a laughing stock as a headline on the newspaper , but I have to said its just rarely individual case, if u traveling furthermore on others places of Malaysia (other than Cameron), u will find out they are not only speak fluently in Chinese, but also Malay and English and their own's mother tongue (Hokien, Hakka etc).
Malaysia national language is melayu as Malaysia Also a multi-racial nation, so they should have a common medium language to united them, but besides that, the chinese ancestor still insists that the Chinese language as a fundamental stone of their culture should be inherits and preserves , languages is the medium of ur very own culture to passing down n inherit, if u lose ur language, then ur culture will most probably be twisted ,fading n bury in the history. So under the local Chinese spiritual leaders such as 林連玉,陳六使 etc, struggling n fighting for the right of learning Chinese, so Nowaday the Chinese-malaysian not only can speak melayu n English, but communicate with their family members in their own dialects n Chinese as well.
For the Indonesian, some says they are same as singaporean, but that's truely a sad case ,as their previous pm Suhato strongly against Chinese, because of the domestic political conflicts with the communist party, so he intended to eliminated the language, deprived it from the local Chinese, they don't even have a right to celebrate the Spring Festival there, except recently the policies been started to loosen.
But in Singapore, despite of the vast majority is Chinese, but out of the political demanding n certain context at that time, liguangyao have to converted the medium teaching language from Chinese into English in nanyang technology university (before reformed the medium language is Chinese) etc, pulling the Relationships closer to the western countries for ports business and economic development .
However, what I wanted to point out is, there are surely many profound reasons n complexities of politic behind the context, but learning Chinese is a privilege through the efforts of generations keep passing down. I'm not put the blame or looking down on anyone, but since there's an opportunity offers by ur school for free, then u should grab the chances n learn it well, either for the career advancement or self-improving, don't just simply take it for granted.

Most Singapore chinese people are a disgrace and are overly westernized, and most of them hate their own mother tongue , and even hate the country of their ancestors, and that is why when ever there is any conflicts between people from China and those of other races, you always see most of the Singapore Chinese people speaking up loudly against the Chinese people from China . Most Singapore Chinese people actually hate their own race, which is such a huge disappointment .

Good to be multilingual. I am Chinese & was brought up in Malaya & left for a public school in England 56 years ago & have settled in both England & now Turkey in my retirement. Good to listen to Chinglish. English accents in the UK also vary a lot & many English cannot understand heavy provincial accents. Standard received English i.e. BBC English is the standard but, unfortunately, there is also a Class difference in accents. I am fortunate that I can speak four different Chinese dialects or languages because my father was a Hakka, my mother Hokkien , the servants Cantonese & I picked up Mandarin at school. I also had to learn Malay at School & communicated in Malay with our Chauffeur. Then I moved on to picking up Italian, Czech & Polish owing to my different girlfriends.
OK lah! sorry to bore you.

This is really depressing.. Im literally gobsmacked by the responses given by those adolescences. I wonder how they even passed their O level Mother tongue. Constantly shaking my head in despair. Furthermore, Chinese is not a language. Chinese, per se, is a race or ethnicity group. We, Chinese, speak Mandarin and Mandarin is a form of Chinese Language. Chinese Language consists of Mandarin and other forms of dialects. Just like the Indian dont speak Indian. They speak Tamil or other dialects. I even questioned your proficiency in "Jiak Kang Tang".

i got As for both O level Mother Tongue and Higher Mother Tongue (Mandarin Chinese) but even I would struggle to find the words to answer the questions simply because it isn’t a language that I’ve been using every day. If the people around me don’t converse and don’t wish to converse w me in Mandarin(which they all don’t), I don’t have much use of it. Not to mention the fact that I was exempted from it in JC and hence completely stopped my reading and writing of the language after secondary school. Sure I speak it at home sometimes but words for daily use are different from words required for such questions in the interview, and the fact of the matter is that Singaporeans are just not using the language enough and when practice goes down, fluency does too. It becomes harder to comprehend sentences and form sentences from the very language that we in fact know.

@violet 9968 My precise consensus. Our proficiency in Mother Tongue decreases at an exponential rate ever since we graduated from Secondary School. Our tertiary education don't promote the usage of Mother Tongue and even in our workplace, we mostly converse in English or colloquial form of Singlish. But what is really shocking to me is that, in that video, a couple of teenagers who looks like freshly graduated from Secondary school/JC, couldn't even form a proper dialogue in Mandarin. This makes me ponder, do we even take Mandarin in during Secondary school? Or maybe most student just opted to get "Basic" Chinese language instead as they deem it as a hassle. During my years of pursuing education, I knew students who were struggling in their Mother Tongue, could actually opted for Basic Mother Tongue but this only cater towards a very special minority group of students. Somehow, I just got this bad spider-sense tingling feeling, that the majority of the current generation just simply opted for Basic Mother Tongue just to get the "easy way" out. If that is the case, I'm utterly gutted at our education system. Instead of moving forward, we are actually moving backwards.
Most of Us our mother tongue proficiency stops until secondary school. I honestly think, it sets up a good foundation for us moving forward in speaking our Mother Tongue, but it is also up to us as individual, to choose whether we want to hone it and let it incorporated in our lives or just simply brush away and blame the society that it is the environment causes us to neglect our mother tongue. Sadly, we chose the latter. We got no excuse to complain, whine or sulk that "Oh it is so hard to watch Chinese Movie without English Subtitles or to read a Chinese Novel " because our education system has already equipped us the fundamental tools to sufficiently cope with such difficulties. Ultimately, it is up to us to apply them or not.

@@Alex-nk3mt no answer after 3 years. So i am going to answer this. Universiti of Malaya (the sister school to Singapore’s NUS) use both languanges Bahasa Melayu and English in its lecture and tutorial. There are only 2 universities which use English as medium of instruction and learning, that is Universiti of Malaya and Universiti Teknologi Mara (100% English). Both are public universities with UiTM heavily funded by our government. Other public varsities use Bahasa Melayu and private universities and colleges use English. Hope this helps

@@xiranhuang8213 Indeed, probably it is different now. I remember Singapore Government encouraged Chinese Singaporeans to speak Chinese (推行講華語) when I was there.

Dont give up on your ancestral language please. Its ok to have accents when speaking chinese because people from different provinces in china speak with their distinct accents anyway.
