The key to teaching children to be bilingual, is to speak mandarin at home, and let children pick up English by watching videos and in school. The entire generation's parents did it all wrong. That's why sg is having this problem now.
Thats simply not possible because Mandarin is not the actual mother tongue of the Chinese here in Singapore. Majority of Singaporean Chinese’s grandparents also don’t speak Mandarin as a mother tongue. Many grandparent’s mother tongue are Hokkien, Teochew or Cantonese. Thus, the kids parents grew up with Mandarin being just another language to be learnt like English. However, English is still useful as Singapore’s Father Tongue.
@@91838072 it doesn't matter what Mandarin should be classified under. The point I'm making, is the way to most efficiently nurture children to be bilingual, under Singapore context. And it's totally possible. It's been proven to work very well because almost everyone in their 30s and 40s now are effectively bilingual, and that's how we learnt the languages. No doubt some still use "broken" english. But that's because 20 to 30 years ago, we did not have enough exposure to proper english as children. Which isn't the case now.

Its not surprising that many people did poorly though, unless they are chinese speaking at home, after secondary school, some don’t even use it anymore. Imagine someone comes up to you are test you on secondary school biology, I doubt many people would remember the content as well. Same with any knowledge, if you don’t use it, you will lose it, and since singapore society current does not require the use of their mother tongue since we have a common language (english) thats why most people forgot about their mother tongue, just like any other subject they learnt in school

@@91838072 Cantonese has always been the language the Hong Kongers are brought up in. Even the way they write are similar to the way Cantonese is pronounced(using Traditional Chinese script). On the other hand, Mandarin has always been one of Singapore main languages. You go to Malaysia, regardless of you ancestors' homeland(Guangdong, Chaouzhou, Fujian, Fuzhou, etc.), they still learn how to speak Mandarin fluently.

the word 'waiter' , if translated into 服務員, is not accurate enough. It should be 侍應, which is better and more accurate.
服务员 is only used more recently as more Chinese migrated here. This term was not used before the 2000s.
