There's a bit of interesting drama in the lead-up to this event; Grumier was on a streak of dominance throughout the few years prior to the 2016 Olympic Games and was eyeing the 2015 world title because he has never won a championship before despite being ranked 1st in multiple seasons. He made it all the way to the finals at the 2015 World Championships in Moscow, where he faced the 40-year old Géza Imre, who sort of came out of nowhere to take the world title away from Grumier in a 15-14 gold medal bout.
Fast forward to the 2016 Olympics: Grumier is looking for another chance to get his championship title, this time on an even bigger stage, and Imre is looking to complete a glorious end to his long career by winning the Olympics immediately after winning the world championships. And lo and behold, Grumier and Imre meet up once again, this time in the semifinals, where Imre dashed Grumier's hope of a championship for the second year in a row.
But then, Imre suddenly found himself in the shoes of Grumier: he is now trying to win his Olympic gold medal, but instead of an opponent that's much older than him, he's facing up against Park Sang-young, who is barely half Imre's age and is fencing at his first Olympic Games. And of course, this time, it was Imre who was denied a chance of fulfilling his dream. Grumier must be thinking about how his archnemesis was getting a taste of his own medicine. Imre's expression at 1:58 shows it all; he was that close to winning both the world title and the Olympics right before his retirement.

Yep....he tried too hard to finish it...should've just sat back and taken his time...let Park come to him. 2:24 on the clock is an eternity in epee, but still...
      That's why I tell my sabre students to think like a pentathlete -- it's NOT a 5 or 15 touch bout....it's 5 or 15 ONE touch bouts.

So would you after being ahead by 4, needing only 1 to win (a double-hit would work as well), and then getting beaten by the slimmest of timing margins (I'd guess Park hit 41 or 42 ms ahead of Imre...outside the window for a double).
Olympic gold was in his grasp....now he's a footnote to Park's comeback.
