"What they call a mountain but is really just like a big hill" Haha! 🤣 Thanks to the ice age most of our mountains in Finland are like that, especially in the south where Tove lived.
you know that over thinking the mechanical elements of your fantasy stories from a logical/empirically measurable perspective, to lay out the intricacy of all the parts that make a "magical cloud wheelchair" what it is, actually makes your story feel less magical? You get more magical feeling from that which is immeasurable, unexplained. The most important hooks you need to include are how does the reader/watcher of your story relate to your characters and the world, the more relatable their struggles are, the better. And the simpler the premise is, the easier it is to step in. You can then from that starting point develop your world into trying to reveal some underlaying wisdom about those struggles and premises. And that's the next ingredient for a magical world : you should at least try to consider your world and characters as personifications of aspects of the human condition and allegories about its journey through spiritual growth. Metaphors are always pretty blatant in media of this "magical" kind. Well thought worldbuilding should come after these in importance, it is very satisfying for the readers who deeply care about "laws and internal logic" of the fantasy world, but it shouldn't make you lose focus on what's more important. And even if you design a brilliant set of internal logic and law on which your world works, use it only as scaffolding to build your story on, if you feel like you need to stop and explain some high concept at any point, you should have a very important reason to (related directly into the paragraph before), or else you're probably doing something wrong.
The moomin's full names are moomintroll, moominmama and moominpapa! And even then, for the most part you'll hear Moomintroll go 'mama! Papa!' When asking for either parent!
As an American who’s recently gotten into the show, your lack of respect for then material and a seeming disdain for the world is quite shocking. The names are different in the original language and even if they weren’t it isn’t exactly uncommon for characters to be named after their roles. Saying you’ll mix up ‘sniff’ and ‘snufkin’ because their names both start with ‘s’ is a really odd criticism to me because their names are still really different sounding. Also constantly calling everything boring when the point of the series is to emulate a homey feeling gives your comments an intentionally ignorant feeling. This show is meant to be ‘slice of life’ and so it will come across as boring if you’re expecting a traditional fantasy. As I watched the video I wondered if maybe I was misinterpreting your comments because of your tone, because it remains the same even during the endcard and moments where you seem sincere, but these comments still bother me. I just feel like this was an overly critical video about a children’s show with the criticisms not even making sense when you understand a bit more about the lore surrounding the series.
There is more than 65 episodes. There are 78 that have an english dub, but the last 2 and I think number 56 are lost and only available with russian voiceover on top of it. Then there is another season on top of that for a total 104 episodes, but that one was never dubbed to english, and isn't based on the original books anymore, so many people say it isn't that good.
i’ve never heard of this show, but it does look very magical and visually appealing! something that most cartoons these days lack, unfortunately. /: great video man! stoked to see you continue this mini series!
Actually sniff and snufkin is only in the English dub so it isn't done by tove. Originally their names were sniff and Snusmumriken. And in finnish they are Nipsu and Nuuskamuikkunen.
I have difficulties watching the video, because the color distortion is really hurting my eyes (I've had to pause it at 2:45. I understand why it's there, but I hope that you've managed to come up with an alternative effect for your fresher videos. After all, this is 4 years old when I'm watching this, and therefore your content has most likely leveled up already). Otherwise, really enjoying the video! :)
Author of the original novels and comics was swedish speaking finnish and animation is japanese-finnish. NOT swedish! Moomins are finlands cultural treasure, so it’s important to present their origins right. Oh, and don’t blame the author of bad name translation. Original names are Nipsu ”sniff” and straight translation would something like ”Clip” and Nuuskamuikkunen ”Snufkin” his name comes from 2 words. Nuuska that translates to snuff and Muikku which means tiny fish that doesn’t have english name. I think that closest translation would be ”Cinco” so Snufkin is kinda close. ”Nen” is typical syllable in finnish last names. Please do some research. Otherwise great video. 👌
There aren’t any humans in moominvalley snufkin like his father the joxter is a mumrik male mumriks are cat like people little my is a mymble she will stay small for awhile then grow
The names are an oversight of the English translator, not Tove Jansson. The Finnish names are different and perfect for the characters. Many of the English translations are absolutely ridiculous. Snufkin and Sniff are Nuuskamuikkunen and Nipsu. Maybe the translators just saw that they indeed started with the same letter and went all in.😂 And as you can see Moomins and Snorks look veeery similar. They are all "trolls" but Moomin and Snork are more like family names, not "species".

great video man! stoked to see you continue this mini series!
The more I thought about it, 90's cartoons were the most unmagical. Rugrats, CatDog? Pffft.
Thanks Doplex!
I always thought moomin was a hippo lmao....
He does resemble one yeah! But I guess he IS a moomin. Also his name is Moomin. So lame. lol
It's actually said like "torvay yarnson"
Wow tha'ts odd. Noted. thank you!
i love all those pew poing pyong pang boom in this show and thats it
Moomins are actually considered anime , not cartoon
Moomin and Little My always read as teenagers to me
This gives me a cinemasins vibe.
Actually sniff and snufkin is only in the English dub so it isn't done by tove. Originally their names were sniff and Snusmumriken. And in finnish they are Nipsu and Nuuskamuikkunen.
6:25 The hat is grabbing hold of his head, you can see it when he first tries to take it off.
Snufkin and Sniff.... Actually Snusmumriken and Sniff. So blame whoever translated Snufkin's name XD
Jesus CHRIST, Snusmumriken is even worse!!
@@FrostDrive True but it also has the name of his species in it: mumrik
I absolutely love the books.
Hmmm what an interesting little cartoon!
it's pretty unique! Thanks Abby! (:
I adore this show

U deserve more subs dood owo
aw thanks! Hopefully someday, but I gotta be more dedicated. Upload more often.
Oh wao owo I never actually knew that you would reply to this comment that has been sucked in the comments >_>
Well, you can do that if you want to ^^
Moomins have magic that Mlp, Steven Universe or any other animated bullshit will never have
Also Sonic is not intrested in Amy damnit
I have difficulties watching the video, because the color distortion is really hurting my eyes (I've had to pause it at 2:45. I understand why it's there, but I hope that you've managed to come up with an alternative effect for your fresher videos. After all, this is 4 years old when I'm watching this, and therefore your content has most likely leveled up already). Otherwise, really enjoying the video! :)
kinda want him to review the other reboots to see his opinion about their changes and differences.
Snufkin=Nuuskamuikkunen Sniff=Nipsu
Yeah sorry about the mistakes! I really would go back and change the video if I could. I didn't want to disrespect Moomins or Tove
I very much agree that all the "Moomin" names in front of everything is confusing!! IDK why the author did it that way...
“Toev jan-son” 😂
did I say her name wrong haha
I will follow this with interest :3 (you are correct about little My btw)
Oooh good to know! Thanks! :3
wait this says it published in may 17th, but rn for me is may 16th

I love the names!!
This made my sphincter go limp.
Wait 65 of your series or 65 moomin episodes?? Because I know that there are wayyy more than 65 episodes
Mmmmm I think it was 65 episodes in this iteration of Moomin? I can't remember
FrostDrive I know moomin 1990 has 76 episodes (season one)
My puppy has a moomin plushy she loves 💕
The names are an oversight of the English translator, not Tove Jansson. The Finnish names are different and perfect for the characters. Many of the English translations are absolutely ridiculous. Snufkin and Sniff are Nuuskamuikkunen and Nipsu. Maybe the translators just saw that they indeed started with the same letter and went all in.😂
And as you can see Moomins and Snorks look veeery similar. They are all "trolls" but Moomin and Snork are more like family names, not "species".
I mean, with snorks and moomins, tons of real animals look very similar to others
true. but this is DESIGN! You should have contrast with characters!!
snufkin is called "snusmumrik" in swedish and sniff is well,,, sniff, not the same...
Please watch the 2019 series. It's neat.
Yeah I"ll check it out soon! Excited for it
Pikku Myy is older than snufkin, so she damn near adulthood
Nice vid
Thanks! (:
Little My is the oldest kid there XD
There more that 65 of them. There over 80 of them. Wikipedia said 104 of them so you are in for a even longer run that you think.
I was born 1986 and obviously grew up in da 90’s growing up we had 5 tv channels an kids tv was only on at set times no channels specifically for kids so I remember the moonins and found little mi bit scary but other than that adored the show and when I had a daughter introduced it to her she loves it she’s now a 13 yr old self confessed weeaboo and I recently took her to the moomin store opened in London on our last trip can I also talk about the movie released a year or so ago and it was ruined by the voices for me and my daughter making it unwatchable.
she’s not swedish she is finish
whoopsiee
Tove is a finn not Swedish! Her mom is but Tove is a Swedish speaking finn
wasn't Tove Jansson finnish?
Finnish!!! Not Swedish.
Also go check most 90’s cartoons weird af
I disagree , ed edd and eddy was the most magical!
