  • How much do you know about Moomin ?
Moomins 1990 TV show (based on series of books by Tove Jansson) is very weird, interesting and has a lot of unknown facts about it.
The characters like Moomin, Snufkin, the Groke, Hattifatteners, Snork, Moominpappa, Moominmamma, Little My are hiding fair amount of secrets.
For this weeks video I prepared a list of five things you didn't know about the moomins. There are lots of very interesting things around the moomins stories. Each character deserves its own video and at least a few videos could be dedicated to hidden meanings alone. A few characters in the stories are also known to be based on a real people. I'll gladly share all that with you in the next videos, so subscribe and let's go!
If you watched the moomins leave a comment saying if those 5 facts were unknown to you, shocking. Were those facts really the things you didn't know about the moomins? Was it interesting?

The hell sweden 80% of those unaired episodes have NOTHING wrong with them. They basically banned every emotional episode like "The phoenix" it bloody deals with death, danger of weapons and rebirth. and banning the Witch is just fucking bullshit because she is super plot relevant with Snork and Alicia in general.

@@andthisisweird Well, it’s quite hard to say, as a Finnish person, I’ve watched Moomins from very young age, maybe 2-3 years old... Of course there is the Groke and some other scary things, but otherwise it’s very heartwarming show, so probably that’s why there never was any restriction as far as I know, and maybe they’re not even necessary. But maybe put a note in some episodes that those might be too scary for very young kids(?).

Okay so I’m gonna try to justify the banned swedish episodes:
The Pirate is pretty obvious, it was violent, it has a hostage situation, threats, poison and foul language.
The Big Explosion... well, the explosion I guess
The Imp, well itterations of satan and devils is not allowed in kid programs in sweden
Snorkmaiden Goes Phychic also had an explosion I think?
The Water Nymph’s plot was probably not seen as appropiate to kids (all male characters fall in love with a nymph upon seeing her), idk.
Moominpapas Second Youth... I have no idea, I havent watched it in a while. Maybe the plot was seen as to confusing to kids so they just didnt bother dub it.
Motherly Love and The Terrible Little My... maybe the small violence between minors... idk
The Fanch Dress Ball... I dont know honestly
Moomins The Fortune Teller has a segmant where Moomin and Sniff is pouring alcohol to a turtle, and you see the effects pretty quickly... I guess the alcohol reference was not allowed.
The Vampire... Idk, havent watched it in a while
The Phoenix is honesty obvious as it contains a bit of gun violence (snufkin almost got accidently shot). Even though the point of the episode is that guns is bad, it was probably too much for swedish tv anyways.
The Slug-a-bed Mushrooms... Hmm, it can be either that the mushrooms can be seen as a drug, or the fact that most people falling asleep was basically in a vegetable state, maybe was too much for tv.
Moomin and the Dolphin I honestly understand why it was banned. Breathing troubles is appearing very often, both from Moomin and the dolphin. It’s a bit unsettling.
The Cave... maybe the dark cave was seen as scary? I have no idea.
I do think that many of these got banned for bullshit reasons, but I can still see some of the reasoning behind it.

The rumours about a final episode that aired only in Japan are technically not unfounded. Though there was no such thing, there was an attempt to finish the series with Janson's final big story from the Moomin series, November in Moominvalley. Concept art exists, but the story was eventually considered too depressing to be the end to a beloved children's cartoon.

    • @mazubahtender
      @mazubahtender ปีที่แล้ว +12

If it would have been a faithful recreation, it would have happened during a time period during which the Moomins were away, though the story actually takes place during the Lighthouse adventure, so already there's a contradiction. The story would have followed six characters, Fillijonk, Hemulin, Snufkin, Mymble, a young boy named Toft and an old man, who doesn't remember his name, as they all come to the Moomin house in search of the Moomins. Fillijonk wants to overcome her lonelyness, Hemulin would have wanted a change to his monotonous life, Mymble would have wanted friendship with Little My away, the old man wished to enjoy peace and quiet alone, Snufkin wanted to finish a song he was writing, and Toft wanted to be a part of the Moomin Family. In the end each character finds their solutions with eachother's help, but each solution would have been, at best, bittersweet, with maybe the exception of Mymble.

@@waterking74 The novel is basically about dealing with loss ans grief, it was the last novel Tove wrote about the moomins during the year her mother died. Basically, the Moomin family is nowhere to be found and secondary characters have to deal with their absence and slowly grow to be independent without them. It’s bittersweet because it’s a pretty necessary and grown up topic - Tove let go of the Moomins and so encouraged other people to do the same.

I must admit that, although I am Finnish, I had no idea that more Moomin episodes have been censored in Sweden than in Finland. This probably only highlights the fact that the Moomins are more of a national treasure for Finns than Swedes. (And yes, many people actually think that, the Moomins are from Sweden.) But no one probably knew that, there is a rather gloomy truth about the Moomin TV series. At one time, when the Finnish TV premiere of the series was supposed to be on September 21, 1991, something happened behind the scenes that almost caused the series not to be shown outside of Japan. And that reason was law problems. Yes, I have seen a document on the subject, but, even there, the matter was told without revealing much detail. Fortunately, the series premiered on the agreed day.
One thing that many do not know is that, the first two episodes of the series were almost also intended to be banned in Finland, because of their frightening imagery. But the episodes were still released on TV because these were intriguingly relevant to the story of the series, and these episodes also established the character gallery of the series.
One thing many people know is that, in Finland, the series has been shown on two TV channels, the first of which was YLE, from the 90s to the 2010s. And the other channel was MTV3, which started showing the series after 2017. MTV3 had to dub the series as new, and where the original YLE dub was carefully made, and really loved, the MTV3 dup, on the other hand, is really hated because it’s mostly Finnish dub, based on the English version. They tried to clearly combine the English language version of the dialogue, and the YLE version of the similarity, but the end result is a really dry, impersonal and hastily crafted shameless financing license company product, devoid of the same feeling and the same charm and down-to-earthness as the YLE version was known.
But I blame more CMore for the bad dubbing, by which the dubbing was done really hastily to get it to streaming services as quickly as possible. The only good thing MTV3 dub did was that, they also dubbed banned episodes. They were not shown on TV, but the episodes were given their own official DVD release.
But YLE also made decisions that people didn't like. One thing was that, the episode Robbers in Moominvalley, got on TV on the 90s to the 21st century. But then in the 2010s, the episode was pulled out because the episode was considered intimidating, uncomfortable, and inappropriate for the channel. Later, MTV3 returned this episode to TV screens.

@@corvus9653 It was an episode where, the police inspector was losing his job.

I know you posted this video a year ago, but I just had to comment. I am an American and grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan which is heavily influenced by the countless Finnish immigrants who settled there over the last century. Because of their influence, The Moomintroll books were available in my elementary school library. I read every single one when I was in grade school and absolutely fell in love with this whole world! These stories were so much fun to read and so interesting. They were nothing like other books I'd read up to that time. Because of this, the Moomintrolls have been beloved by me my whole life, and I can't wait for my granddaughters to be old enough to read those size books as I am most certainly going to give them a set! Hardly anybody in America even knows the Moomintrolls exist, so I feel very fortunately to have had the opportunity to be introduced to them at a young age. God bless the Finnish people! Here in the U.S., Moomin shamefully isn't that well known. Never seen anything about them when I was a kid. For me, I didn't even know Moomins existed until 4 years ago. And it was COMPLETELY by random as well. I came across a video for Lo-Fi music on TH-cam and it had a thumbnail of Moomin riding on a pink cloud from the first episode. I had no idea what in the world that was from and was genuinely intrigued. So I looked in the comment section of that video and someone thankfully mentioned the name Moomin to where that is how I found out about them. Now, after watching the entire 1st season of the 1990 cartoon, I love the Moomins! Something about how it's way different than the usual cartoons I seen in the U.S. that appeals to me. Just like anime from Japan.
I love the characters, the stories, and world that they live in. Very original.

The rumor about the final tragic episode is an Israeli urban legend from the late '90s.
They all say something about kids got traumatized or committed suicide in Japan. The main storyline revolves Snufkin as a little kid, that wakes up from his long sleeping realizes that all Moomin stories existed only in his imaginary dreams. The continuation of the story from this point is very diverse with a drawing competition at the school, drug addiction, hospitalization and even the Holocaust.

A Finn here. Yeap Moomins are a giant deal in Finland, basically every kid raised here since the 90s has seen the animation series plus read the books. And it's with that knowledge that I would like to present the unofficial 6th and 7th thing on your list. Somewhat long a comment, but hear me out:
    Number 6) The True Series
When you search Adventures in Moomin Valley series' episode list, there are two versions. One has episodes 1-78, the other has more than that, roughly 120 or so. Episodes 79 and onwards are the 2nd season, sometimes called the FIller or Bloat season. The reason is that the 78 episodes of the First season or "True Series" are the ones based on Tove Jansson's work - ep 78 ends in the very last scene that Tove herself wrote for her Moomin series, aside the concept art she had for a much darker end which wasn't deemed suitable for a kids show (as Mazu Songfox pointed out). The 2nd season wasn't aired as widely as the 1st, outside of Finland I have no idea which countries showed it. While it isn't necessarily a bad show, it feels a lot less considering it begins right after the masterpiece that is the First Season, likely due to not being strictly based off Tove's stories. My personal theory is that the producers wanted to keep producng a very popular series and tried their best to make new stories since she didn't create any new Moomin stories.
Number 7) The Lesson about passing on and letting go
Throughout the Moomin series' First Season, one overarcing theme is the concept of the world moving on and some things being left behind or being let go. While episodes like the Phoenix have their place in this theme, it is mostly seen through the viewpoint of Moomin(troll) himself struggling with his fear that Snufkin might not return next year. The arc takes its time and is visible once you know to look for it - beginning just before the 1st winter that we see Snufkin departing as Moomin has his first worries that Snufkin may not return, and over the series' run it gradually ramps up. The climax is reached in allegory with the bird nest episode, where Snufkin tells Moomin to not hold it against the birds for following teir nature to go south while also telling that it is OK to feel sad. The birds are also an allegory to how Snufkin himself must leave on his adventures, and Moomin reaches acceptance of that fact in that episode as well as during the marvellous season finale scene.
Thank you for humouring me, and do tell if these 2 were surprises to you o7

My brother told me about seeing an episode where the groke had a voice similar to the english voice, when she was screaming "i'll be back" at the end of the episode. Thanks for this concise collection of information connecting the TV series to Tove's books and the background knowledge of where some of these characters originated in Tove's life and how some of the episodes were banned. I have only seen snippets on TH-cam of this TV series. I hope to go through them somehow online. Part of me doesn't want to I guess as it's kind of like when Disney took over the Star Wars stories/movies compared to the original movies (even though I'm comparing these videos with Tove's books). I read most all of the Moomin books as a youth here in the US (and I wasn't a big reader) and I think between these stories and growing up watching Sesame Street in the 70's those characters all really set me to be more accepting of people from all backgrounds and colors even though I grew up in the South of the US. So the bohemian eclectic vibe and connecting with earth energy and exploring, all influenced my life as a young person and an adult as I've started to read the books again. As I learn more about Tove's life as an adult I have grown to respect and admire her on multiple levels as an artist and her life story and following her passions to be authentic. She has given so much to the world from her life.

There where three things that scared me as a kid everytime I watched the show:
    1) The Groke when she was behind the door standing still with nothingness in her eyes
    2) Lady of the cold when she glanced at little My shared her that little careless smile and froze her with those shrinking eyes. And that song in background wasn't helping neather.
    3) Ghost pirate ship... Just when that sound effect started i was so scared I wannished in my blanket. Just that look and ambience of that ship was odd and scary to me.
Well let's say music in this show was 99% of the time the scariest thing there. But it was awesome 🎉👻

Well.... The last episode is a two parter. It is about aunt jane. She comes to visit. And the kids find out that she has back problems. They want to help her, so they travel with the time machine. That is part one as i can remember.... Part tow the sterry voyage. It is about them finding the temple that i guess they had been looking for. There is an old lady with a purple dress, and has a black panther. But much more scary then the hobgoblins panther. And then she gives the kids the medicine for aunt jane, but something happened to it. And they come home empty handed. And then there was a party for aunt jane. And i remember them giveing her star-presents. Like the hemulen got her a flower with star shape leaves🌿. Snufkin gives her, i guess star dust??? And the officer gives her a sea star.
I don't remember it being THAT upsetting. Meybe like inn the first part when they travel thro time and see the dinosaurs. And then there was a monster with horns? I don't know, but they found a weird star thing?
Sorry that is all I remeber. But i don't get why 5 kids killed them self over this two parter...

@@pippirrupnowdead4319 That was a last episode of the second season. That season wasn't shown in many countries, because most of it was kind of bad.
That "depressing final episode" is probably just a creepypasta, but might have been influenced by "November on Moominvalley", the last Moomin novel, that wasn't adapted in the anime and was a bit (tho not disturbingly or anything) dark and sad.

I looked through the comments but I have to ask to be sure. By "tragic last episode" do you mean episode 78 (the last of the proper series) or 104? Or maybe after one of these there was another final episode (79 or 105) but it was deleted forever?
Though I guess it could be the 78 one because the atmosphere of its last scenes is really overwhelming (music, colors, fog, many goodbyes) and when I was a child it would be hard for me to think that the whole series ended with Snufkin, Snork and Alice leaving, if not for the next one series, even though it wasn't as good as the first.
Greetings from Poland for all you moominous people!

It was the episode we first meet the scary Groke which was following Thingumy and Bob after they appeared in the Moominvalley with their secret hidden in the suitcase. So it's about the moomins family meeting them and figuring out why they are acting so weird. At the end the weather changes and everyone is preparing for the first arrival of the Groke.
