I first watched the Moomins when I was just a tiny little child, and Snufkin definitely was my rolemodel back then. Or maybe I just related to him a lot because we already had so much in common. 🥺 In any case, I deeply understand his desire to travel, and his need for a lot of alone-time.
... just looking at his character design, his tent and his personality plus the wee fact he has coffee in a time where this was sparce in Scandinavia. Is Snufkin a military deserter? I think so ...
Do you have a favorite animated version of Snufkin? I don't know if I personally have one, but I do love how The Moominvalley (2019) explores his character flaws, like his anxieties and how he keep people at a disstans, even the ones he love. Anyway great video! Short, simple, perfekt
My favourite version of Snufkin is the 90s version. He is my generation's Snufkin. I admired his freedom to chose to disappear and to just be. I envy that freedom to this day. In our lives people have so many expectations and demands of us at work, school, at home etc. And in today's technology/communication driven world, everyone has so much access to you. It's not that I dont value my work and my relationships (I REALLY REALLY do!), but there sometimes when I just want the day/week for myself, to be that person who isn't an employee, a daughter, a sister, a wife or a friend, I just want to be Alison, alone with her daydreams and her music. I think it's why I love being a night owl so much. The rest of the world is in bed asleep and it can't find me lol. Neighbours often comment they haven't seen me for months...there's a reason for that 🙂. Thinking about it, I only really have a few close friends and I don't do that whole girly BFF thing either, I just don't feel the need for it in my life. I cherish my friendships and I enjoy the time I choose to spend with others, and I love entertaining them and making them laugh. I hope I bring happiness to them. Conversely however, I don't feel the need to be surrounded by a gang of "mates" every minute of every day. Far too exhausting. Far too demanding emotionally. To be honest, I think a lot of people feel this way.
2019 is just fanfiction and cringe. i dont think it was even an official tove licensed production?? it was like a kick starter funding thing. so i dont consider that a true canon for snufkin and his worst adaption... with lots of agendas at play. lol lets be real. cast n crew admit it. 90s anime version is probably the best one and GOAT'd. even the older anime version snufkin is good.
The quote i beginning is about living in the moment, you don't take anything with you, not even a picture as you carry the memory in your mind. Let's say you go for the first time to the most beautiful scenery known to man. You don't take any memorabilia with you, not photo, not rock, not anything. Only the memory of what you saw
I've always felt a connection to Snufkin. Me and him share many of the same philosophies and ideas, but I turned out to value material things more than he does, but less than other people. I see the value in owning things, but treat them expendably. I can't really afford being a vagrant, so it's better for me to keep and make use of items in my day to day.
@@commenteroftruth9790 Being my own person shouldn't preclude me from introspection through analysing others. It's no fun being an emotionless Jedi like that.
I find it really interesting how Tove Jansson muddles the line between proper names and species names. Both "Moomin" and "Snufkin" (and also "Snork", "Hemulen", etc.) seem to function as both: As long as you don't know the character, he is _a_ Snufkin, i. e. a member of a species called "Snufkin", but when you get to know him, he _is_ Snufkin, i. e. the bearer of a proper noun "Snufkin". That is extremely interesting to me. It pretty much makes group-based bigotry inexpressable because whenever you _try_ to refer to a group or collective, you inevitably end up only referring to an indeterminate set of random individuals. In a way, the language she writes in *is* the language of childhood.
This video was such a treat, it was delightful to see how other people cherish and understand a well loved character of mine. Snufkin has always been a role model to me and I must say that I envy how free he is. At the moment I can't have enough freedom as I would love to, I'm still a teenager but I dream of traveling and enjoying nature. I don't consider myself an adventurer neither someone with high experience in the woods; but I would love to decide whenever I feel ready to hang out with people, or to be alone with nature. Great video the visuals, the philosophy, the music, everything was on point. I was feeling quiete anxious before but now I've settled down thanks to this masterpiece.
Well, as I have learned, the model of Snufkin was Tuulikki, Tove Janssons´s love. Summertimes they lived together in an small cottage on a small island at seas, fo decades. They were both wery philosophical artistists, and by start anarchistst. And you might no more wonder why Nuuskamuikkunen in finnish, is Snussförälska in swedish. By my poor swedish the name is translaited as snuffbeloved. Tove wrote and spoke swedish because she was born in finland and we have this bilingual country.
It's true that Tuulikki was the basis for one of the Moomin-characters, but it isn't Snufkin (or Snusmumriken as I knew him growing up) but Too-ticky. As for Snufkins original name, Snusmumriken; Snus is, yes, snuff as in the tobacco, but it also means to sniff in order to smell something, and/or to breathe very loudly through your nose while sleeping. As for the meaning of mumrik, it is an old, seldom used word nowadays (perhaps it was more common in Finland?) but it means an odd person, or someone who mumbles a lot.
whilst i think snufkin is very much free and probably one of the freest characters in moomin, he is not the most free character. that title goes to little my.
I grew up whit ("mumidalen" norwegian for") moomin wally" and ("snusmumrikken" norwegian) for "snufkin" was my favorite character because of his calm way of saying good bye see you again, and because it was stressful for me at a very young age (long story short a was a foster child whit parents living far away, I wasn't allowed to se them often) so the show really made me more understanding, but sadly I have a real issue whit the new series, the producers made Snufkin so frantic and stressed I really don't like it, there is no excuse for ruining such a great character they should be ashamed.
This is gold. You've made beautiful job. Really good content, is obvious that you took special care of the aesthetic, and that makes the difference! Keep going, you are doing great! New subscriber, thank you!
Snuffkin isn't merely about freedom, although that is a great character trait in him to notice and capture, he is also _self sufficient_ and independent, unchained and capable. He lives, walks, travels, fishes and gathers his food, moving from place to place none keeping his heart captive, the people not the centerpiece of his own life even if he does like them from time to time. In moominvalley, he always finds his friends during the summer, but he doesn't belong, he's an outsider, he doesn't have a house in there, nor does he need anyone to make food for him or keep him entertained. To become Snuffkin in your own life, one must cut off all their ties to the material world, their friends and family... to have every place to go, and no place to call your home.
Every time I hear of Snufkin, I am reminded of my character, Zipporah. She is the Oc I made for the Moomin world and her nickname is Zippy. She is a wandering artist/poet/philosophers. She is similar to Snufkin but does not like being called a female version of him because she had her own unique traits. She is a bit more social and freindly than him but a few other things too. She wanders and travels because she likes seeing places and she is driven to travel. If she were to symbolize something here, I'd think she would symbolize the true philosophical, deep and poetic view of an artist. Nowadays we have so many people drawing fanart with talent and skill. They are called artists, but they are mostly doing their craft. Those are called craftsmen, not artists. Ziporah would paint scenes that she encounters along the way and write poetry about the beauty of nature or the lights of a city, but she does more than that. She is the type of lady that when Snufkin would say "duty is when you do something you don't want to do" she'll say, "Yes and no" and explain her view of it. She is the type of lady that travels but would talk to Moomin's mother about the concept of a home whenever they have tea. She would paint a river while Snufkin fished in it. The true vision of an artist, taking something beautiful and showing it to the ones around you. That is why math and art are the same. "Some say 2+2 is math. That is calculation. Math is showing what is there and so is art. Science is imagining what you see. Art is seeing what you imagine." Zipporah can go deeper than that if inspired. Whenever she needs something to do, she has her options. She sometimes paints a scene she finds beautiful and leaves the finished portrait somewhere where someone can find it. That way she didn't have to carry too much and the person can keep the beautiful scenery in sight. She would also write poetry and a few other things. And when Snufkin is dealing with small children, she is happy to help. Actually she is willing to help anyone who needs it. When Moomin first met her, he thought she was a femenin version of Snufkin. She did not like that of course. But later she shows er own unique traits besides having green-blue eyes and freckles while Snufkin has brown eyes and no freckles. She traveled out of being driven and to to see new things. She tried to join Snufkin on his travels because she saw a fellow journey person and a traveling companion. He was reluctant of course because he thought it would make it hard to think. But other people tend to make thinking inspired and se was helpful for the most part and did not mind sleeping outside. Later he learns that Zippy traveled as a girl with her family but they always returned to home base. But one day when Zippy was grown, she was traveling and offered to paint a portrait for a troll. The troll did not like the portrait because Zippy included the honest details that the troll did not like. So she was cursed to always wander. She cannot even sleep n the same spot twice. After Snufkin helped her remove her curse, she was ethusiastic to show him her hometown. But it was not what she remembered. Darkness and evil had taken over and forced her neighbors into hiding. While exploring, she found a parade of rainbow prostitutes. She told Snufkin to look away. He did not need to see that. Soon they found a young couple taking a baby to the butcher. The baby was cut up there. Snufkin was shocked while Zippy was horrified. He placed his hand on Zipporah's shoulder and told her to look away. That was a lot. She brought him to the house she lived in beforehand. It was the only thing not changed. Soon one of her neighbors rushes in and fills Zippy in on what happened. Zippy then became enraged and decided that every innocent in town will have to evacuate and find a new home. Snufkin asked her if it was wise for them to leave their home. To which Zipporah answered, "Home? Ha! Home is a safe place. No on. is safe here. Home is a warm place. There is no warmth here. Home is a familiar place. The only familiar thing here is this house. Home is a place of rest. There is no rest here." So every neighbor of innocence left the town and evacuated to another place. Zipporah grieved that a home she once knew is dead while talking to Snufkin by a fire. He then answered, "If home is a place of warmth you have it with the people you care about, if home is a familiar place you have familiar faces, if home is a place of rest, you can rest by my side." That is the best I can summarize my character, Zipporah. What do you think?
I came here because I didn't know what a snuffkin was. I heard the term from this person on a TH-cam video that was showing how to make a pointed wool hat. I am an amateur milliner and the more they talked about the stuffing the more I had to find out what this stuff going to was and I absolutely love it. Snufkin coalesces so many things and qualities about various characters that I've read about I can't believe it's been this long and I was not aware.
I've never watched nor read Moomin _(despite living where it's very popular)_ ... but for some reason, Snufkin got stuck in my brain. Very weird amd now I'm here.
I really like to overly psycho analyse characters, so I wonder how Snufkin's mother putting him on basket and letting him go with the river affected who he is. The basket was supposed to find his father but it never did, which means Snufkin grew up alone in the wild like an animal.
or he was found and raised, perhaps passed around, perhaps with a nomadic tribe. perhaps his new family died when he was young, or they sent him off. or he wandered away. there are a lot of possibilities
Thanks for this- I'm finally getting into Moomin, after seeing things drift around in my feed for years, watching it, and moving on from it. It looked nice, but I didn't want to bother getting the books, or finding out what to watch or anything. I think I'll finally change that, now, haha. Really like Snufkin, because I can't help but be happy, seeing a piece of fiction reflect similar things I've been saying to people in my life. It's nice to have something that understands how you think, even if it's just lines from a book. I'd like to think that if I can grow into myself more, I'll be able to find my own capability to be a Snufkin in this life. Nice video, have a good day.
i could relate to snufkin if only it wasn't for the fact I cant lol I like the play video games to me they're journeys but video games rot so they're all temporary. I also want to travel the world. To support these both I need a vehicle with solar power. Kinda to materialistic to relate to snufkins but I'm me and that's all ill be and that's fine with me
It's a shame the powers that be, at least here in the United States, ultimately prevent or heavily discourage people from living in the same spirit as Snufkin. Van Life is the closest we have, but it comes at greater legal risk and rules. Sure you can vagabond the old fashioned way as well, but also at greater legal risk and severe health risks if you find yourself in an area that's unfriendly to the functionally homeless That said, even if you don't live a nomadic life, you can still take a lot of Snufkins teachings to heart in regards to simple living with few possessions. Also learning to love memories more than things is something that will bring anyone greater joy in life

Tove being playful, childish and adventurous while Vivica was the mature, lonesome soul.
He is not Vivika. He is her friend and lover, a philosopher.
I first watched the Moomins when I was just a tiny little child, and Snufkin definitely was my rolemodel back then. Or maybe I just related to him a lot because we already had so much in common. 🥺
In any case, I deeply understand his desire to travel, and his need for a lot of alone-time.
... just looking at his character design, his tent and his personality plus the wee fact he has coffee in a time where this was sparce in Scandinavia. Is Snufkin a military deserter? I think so ...
well appears to have some kinda combat boots on...
lol. who knows. the man will forever remain a mystery. as he is meant to be.
Do you have a favorite animated version of Snufkin? I don't know if I personally have one, but I do love how The Moominvalley (2019) explores his character flaws, like his anxieties and how he keep people at a disstans, even the ones he love. Anyway great video!
Short, simple, perfekt
I love the moominvalley version, but the only 1990s series will always have a massive place in my heart
Thank you for your kind words too 🐐
My favourite version of Snufkin is the 90s version.
@@AlisonBryen I am the same as you! I have few close friends but they understand me, respect me I do the same with them. We have our own spaces.
2019 is just fanfiction and cringe. i dont think it was even an official tove licensed production??
it was like a kick starter funding thing. so i dont consider that a true canon for snufkin and his
worst adaption... with lots of agendas at play. lol lets be real. cast n crew admit it.
90s anime version is probably the best one and GOAT'd. even the older anime version snufkin
is good.
He's such a beautifully written character. That and the way you made the video was so pleasant, thank you. I wish I could live as he does
I love Snufkin. My role model.
This is a Really nice short video, Snufkin is interesting and relatable Character, and definitely in my top 5 favorite Moomin characters.
Even it's sound unfinished at the end, it was very pleasant to listen :) Thank you for your work
The quote i beginning is about living in the moment, you don't take anything with you, not even a picture as you carry the memory in your mind.
Let's say you go for the first time to the most beautiful scenery known to man. You don't take any memorabilia with you, not photo, not rock, not anything. Only the memory of what you saw
Ok but like-
MY SNUSMUMRIK 😭💕💞💓✨
This video held a great aesthetic to it , and I love your narration 👍
I've always felt a connection to Snufkin. Me and him share many of the same philosophies and ideas, but I turned out to value material things more than he does, but less than other people. I see the value in owning things, but treat them expendably. I can't really afford being a vagrant, so it's better for me to keep and make use of items in my day to day.
you are your own person, comparing is irrelevant.
Good video. I'm glad you're continuing with moomin related videos
TH-cam has been recommended me so many snufkin videos and I appreciate it for that.
I like the video and I would like to travel just like him.
He's my favorite snoofkin.. , 😍😇
whilst i think snufkin is very much free and probably one of the freest characters in moomin, he is not the most free character. that title goes to little my.
this video is so relaxing and makes me want to watch the rest of your videos :) great job!
Glad you enjoyed! it means a lot!
I love him even more now! I have such respect for him! 🙂
Even though he carries everything in memory, imagine as he gets old he develops Alzheimer's/Dementia 💀💀💀
i probably ccmmented this already but i really love your voice! thank you for this!
Det hetter "Snusmumriken" på svenska också hehehe
You made me love snufkin more ❤️ good to know more detail about him .. thanks to you
Amazing video!! So well searched and done!
This is gold. You've made beautiful job. Really good content, is obvious that you took special care of the aesthetic, and that makes the difference! Keep going, you are doing great! New subscriber, thank you!
You can also draw many parallels between Snufkin's philosophy and Taoism
i think that snuffkin is sadly the only real character in moomin valley and others like moomin are just his imagination, he see them when he wants
This made me fucking sob and I have no idea why.
Beautiful analysis my friend
Yesss i love this character ✨thank you so much
Snufkin is really special to me and you have done a great job telling his story.
I learned a lot, thank you 🙏
“I want to be alone”
*Jumps off airship*
To which Zipporah answered,
"Home? Ha! Home is a safe place. No on. is safe here. Home is a warm place. There is no warmth here. Home is a familiar place. The only familiar thing here is this house. Home is a place of rest. There is no rest here."
So every neighbor of innocence left the town and evacuated to another place. Zipporah grieved that a home she once knew is dead while talking to Snufkin by a fire. He then answered,
"If home is a place of warmth you have it with the people you care about, if home is a familiar place you have familiar faces, if home is a place of rest, you can rest by my side."
That is the best I can summarize my character, Zipporah.
I love this. It helped me realize why i love Snufkin so much. All i’ve ever wanted was to be truly free
NOBODY HAS EVER READ HER NAME OUT LOUD TO ME… tov a yanson
I’m a man whom stays single
I like to be on my own
I’m a musician and I also don’t see why people obsess about material things. I think Found my Totem
So that's why he destroys signs

You're welcome!
Thanks 💘 you are the best!!
Snufkin/Nuuskamuikkunen is my favourite Moomin character
I've never watched nor read Moomin _(despite living where it's very popular)_ ... but for some reason, Snufkin got stuck in my brain. Very weird amd now I'm here.
I really like to overly psycho analyse characters, so I wonder how Snufkin's mother putting him on basket and letting him go with the river affected who he is.
The basket was supposed to find his father but it never did, which means Snufkin grew up alone in the wild like an animal.
or he was found and raised, perhaps passed around, perhaps with a nomadic tribe. perhaps his new family died when he was young, or they sent him off. or he wandered away. there are a lot of possibilities
just an amazing video!!!
alternate title: an explanation of why Snufkin's a total hottie
im so sad cause i only found out about snufkin and little my in 2018 but never looked into it untill now and i love it and i feel so late D:
I like a lot ur video about snufkin. I really like the edition in this video. Tho the end is quietly abrupt.
Is this the same guy that does shrouded hand? It sounds exactly like him... Either way this content is great. Keep it up!
Boudica ofthe Brae I am not that guy but thank you haha
I'm trying to learn of this freedom myself.
Thank you so nuch for your job
No problem 😊
What I would give to be Snufkin.
I am snufkin
shit is too deep 🥺♥️
Great video man
Thanks, you gave me a lot to think about
beautiful
i could relate to snufkin if only it wasn't for the fact I cant lol I like the play video games to me they're journeys but video games rot so they're all temporary. I also want to travel the world. To support these both I need a vehicle with solar power. Kinda to materialistic to relate to snufkins but I'm me and that's all ill be and that's fine with me
Yes
neat
It's a shame the powers that be, at least here in the United States, ultimately prevent or heavily discourage people from living in the same spirit as Snufkin. Van Life is the closest we have, but it comes at greater legal risk and rules. Sure you can vagabond the old fashioned way as well, but also at greater legal risk and severe health risks if you find yourself in an area that's unfriendly to the functionally homeless
That said, even if you don't live a nomadic life, you can still take a lot of Snufkins teachings to heart in regards to simple living with few possessions. Also learning to love memories more than things is something that will bring anyone greater joy in life
“Oh yeah I super liked you to promote my moomin video”
Smh don’t out me 😭
I generally insult character/show analysis videos. This video was good however. The core, tone and focus was superb and concise.
Eu quero ser que nem ele quando eu crescer espiritualmente
Oh he added ga*y*ety alright 😂
There's a manga with similar vagabond theme as snufkin's character if I'm not mistaken it's Emanon wanderer
snufkin was 100% the baddest bitch in the series
Hahahaha yh I agree
He is based off Amex of Tove
"Be gay do crime." - Snufkin
Cool vid mate. You from the Borough or sunlan?
