One of the best written songs by the most underrated Aussie bands. The album ISH simply brilliant...
Underrated bands hardly have Number One albums and hit singles
@@sexobscura perhaps our opinion could be influenced by our exposure to the band and when we were born 🤔. Whilst the hits achieved are true and they made a fabulous contribution to Australian music, 1927, in my experience being born in 1974, despite their evident 80s success, simply, they don't comes to my mind as quickly as the likes of Aus Crawl, Goanna, Cold Chisel, INXS, ACDC, Angels, Mondo Rock, Divinyls, to name a few. Perhaps because these named bands were more etched into my psychi by the time 1927 hit the airwaves. There are many bands that had hits but aren't as talked about, so perhaps for this reason, rightly or wrongly, they seem underrated. ? 🤔 1927 to me do come to mind more so if thinking of the soft rock era of Wet Wet Wet, Mike and the Mechanics, ...all great popular bands. It's great that platforms like this exist and keep the music contribution accessible. I came here on the back of hearing a caller mention, the Ish Album and how 1927 got their name, on this morning's ABC radio program, Australia All Over with Macca. 😊 (1st May 2022)
@@yaflamminGalah 1988/89 feels like the other day.
@@yaflamminGalah Seems like yesterday, but a long time ago.
@@sanchezVeringz so very true. The mind is a Marvelous time traveller. I think (and hope) that every generation has a period in their life they are fond of, especially for the music that forms the soundtrack to our lives.
Thanks Dad for everything. In 1989 this Vietnam veterans son was just 12 years old.
This Album was the first I ever bought. And incredibly this powerful song was on it.
And now I'm an adult. I get more than I did. You are missed and honoured.
Lest We Forget
I hope Eric never gets sick of singing this song, it has so much meaning to alot of people.
4 Years after this comment I can tell you, he never will, since it is about his father. 1927 such a great band.
Absolutely 💯 right
Holy crap….ish must be one of the best Aussie albums ever. So many classic tracks!
I loved that album😊
Brilliant song from 1927 they should have been bigger than they were
A bloody great song from a great but under rated Aussie Band... AUSSIE PRIDE.... Long live the ANZAC spirit!!!!!! Thank you to all our servicemen and women!!!!!!!!
Could'nt agree more
blood oath m8
You and me bro a life time ago. Wish you were here right now.
He came to Broome years ago. Hung out with white Aussies and black. True hero. Sank some bush chook too
👍🇦🇺👍
Greetings from Polish guy from East Coast of England 🇵🇱🏴
Memories of my childhood waiting for this song to come on rage as it was progressing through the chart, with eager anticipation. Always felt a great connection and heart-wrenching fondness.
Being older makes it so much more profoundly beautiful!
It should be compulsary that every Australian child of school age should hear this. They are our futures, our heroes, we need them more than ever, everyone of them. Their communication skills, strength bravery, insight. Let them hear this, then strive for the betterment of mankind. Our heroes.
Lest We Forget. I heartily agree.
Absolutely 💯 agree
Unfortunately all our kids are being taught now is woke bullshit, boys can be girls, individual freedom is gone and to be a sheep and slave to the politicians and elites. And now they are talking about conscription again. They can go to hell, if they think our sons are going to be sent away, like lambs to the slaughter for their BS wars.
In memory today, 25th April of Paul Gray who has been playing keys for 1927 on and off for the last ten years. R.I.P.
This song brings back memories for me. I managed to get back home but Vietnam changed me. My sister said I'd left part of me over there and someone else said I was not the same person who went over. Many years later my war caught up with me and I ended up in a mental clinic, a mental cripple. At least I did get back home, not like some others.
What did the army do to support you when you came home from Vietnam?.
My father was 19 years old and in the RAAF during the Vietnam
conflict, he was tasked with removing the fallen soldiers from the Hercules planes that brought them home. His father served in RAAF during world war 2. They paid the ultimate price, in a way many will never experience. Those who came home, saw things no one will understand. I have listened to this song since I was 14 to remember the fallen on ANZAC Day.
As you said, many Vietnam and other war veterans who survived came back a different person, and we have all to thank for their service for our country. Lest We Forget
Welcome back home, Sir. I wished President Johnson didn't lie that one of our ships got attacked. JFK said it in 1953 that it made no sense to go into Vietnam. Sir, We pray for you to get well. I would shake your hand, Sir, if I could. God Bless you 🙏
One of the best songs to ever be played on AUS radio brilliant
💖 Lest we forget 🌼 who else is listening to this on Anzac day in quarantine ?
This album came out just before I joined up as a 17 year old and whilst Australia scrapped conscription after Vietnam our people went to Desert Storm in 1992. Now nearly 50 the lyrics resonate so much more. Even in 1990 we joined for the adventure and the pride in our country and now we are dealing with broken bodies and minds.
A great Aussie rock album.
Thank you for your service.
Saw them play this live on stage yesterday arvo in Surfers Paradise, it gave me goosebumps. Easily thousands of people there and everyone was dead silent as this was sung, with a massive ovation at the end. Absolutely iconic. I grew up with 1927 and they will always be my fave Aussie rock band
Good stuff Gold Coast Girl! (I hate the gold coast, its full of crime, but Im sure youre a nice person though lol)
Redtrinity 777 Wow that would've been epic!!! I post this on my FB wall every ANZAC day & always tear up 🙁
I lived in Australia for only 7 months. But I've made many friends in Australia and one of the bands they introduced me to was these and ISH
Gave me goosebumps reading of your experience and I happen to live nearby to Surfers Paradise.. That place has left me with some great memories. Cheers Redtrinity 777

Man when you're 7yrs old in the 80's and you music influences include 1927. Music informs a growing mind I believe, and not much is be had these days.
Should get played on ANZAC day every year but never gets a mention.Brilliant song
Stephen Phillips I put it on my FB wall every ANZAC day ❤️

Wow, Reliving my youth, when Ish was on tape! ☺
Very underrated band..this song is a classic
I hope Eric never gets sick of singing this song, it has so much meaning to alot of people.
Remember the times when we were kids
Playing war games in your yard
Everybody had to be a hero
And get one in the heart
Night would fall and we'd call a truce
And all go home
Years went by we were average guys
Playing life by the rule of thumb
Till a man came on the tv
Talking 'bout war like he wanted one
He said "Everybody put your backs to the wall
Till your numbers called"
You've gotta go and be a hero
I've got a new game for all you boys
Its war without a choice
Compulsory hero
Just try and make it home
Grandpa heard the call to all
For a war to end all wars
And your dad went off to do his bit
And he had to go one more
You've really got no say in it
You have to fight
And that's the law
You've gotta go and be a hero
They made a law you had to go fight
One more crazy war
Compulsory hero
Just try and make it home
So all that had to be heroes
Went off to do their chores
None of them really wouldn't of known
How far a bloody war goes
They're dying to make it home
Then I think back on all those times
Playing war games in your yard
Everybody had to be a hero
Back then that wasn't hard
Night would fall on the battle zone
And we could all go home
You had to go and be a hero
They made a law that you had to go and fight
One more crazy war
Compulsory hero
Just try and make it home
Just try and make it home
But whose gonna make it home

"1927 are an Australian pop rock band formed in 1987 with James Barton on drums, Bill Frost on bass guitar, his brother Garry Frost on guitar and keyboards, and Eric Weideman on vocals, guitar and keyboards. They were popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s with their major hit songs "That's When I Think of You", "If I Could", "Compulsory Hero" and "Tell Me a Story". Their multi-platinum number-one album, ...ish (1988) was followed by The Other Side (1990). At the ARIA Music Awards of 1989 they won two categories: Breakthrough Artist - Album for ...ish and Breakthrough Artist - Single for "That's When I Think of You". At the 1990 ceremony they won Best Video for "Compulsory Hero", which was directed by Geoff Barter. In 1992 the group released a third studio album, 1927, which reached the top 40; but they disbanded the following year. Weideman reformed 1927 in 2009 with a new line-up.".

If that doesn't get the hairs on the back of your neck up I dont know what will. The most underrated Australian band ever. Brilliant lyrics and only 1927 can sing it.
I really love the guitar solos from them. How come they didn't get any bigger outside Australia? Their songs are really better than a lot of American and European hits.
ᶘoᴥoᶅ Unfortunately the case is the same for a lot of Aussie bands. Cracking the U.S. & U.K. markets has only been for the chosen few.
Molly had no say in 1988 when the band 1927 came on the seen. Countdown finished in July 1987.
Stephen Phillips It’s an interesting story about Gary Frost.. by all accounts a melodic genius. Also wrote What About Me for Moving Pictures which probably still keeps him comfortably in royalties to this day. Possibly not really a people person .. I find him an intriguing character! We need a doco!
Their second album didn’t do as well, and they broke up after album 3. Meanwhile inxs was taking over the world . Just bad luck
The Australian flag stands tall for the Men and Women of our services. God bless them all. God bless Australia.
One of Australia's greatest songs

Love this Song & 1927's ISH! Has to be One of the great Debut Albums by anyone or any band #Ever
I have the Best Of album for many years with only great songs... A Dutch music lover.
Beautiful song. Great song. Love it. The ablum is 20...ish Anniversary Edition Digitally Remastered 1927.
Another sad fact of this video is that kids these days wouldn't have a clue what it meant to go outside and play war games in the yard. If it doesn't involved being stuck inside in front of a screen - they don't want to know about it.. (says me sitting in the front of the computer on YT..)
Of course because the screen is the new form of distraction as well as trips down memory lane.
yep wouldn't haven't clue, including busines's
you do realise even when kids do go out side and play, the elderly neighbours complain about the noise, or the kids go play in the street and people complain about the noise or bad parenting letting them play in the street, or they go play in the park and if you dont go supervise you are labelled a bad parent, thanks to past generations now days you are damned if you do and damned if you dont
they would of been old enough to fight, ten years later.
Aus80sRockRadio yeh sad world we live in
This song is just pure genius !
How many other Veterans find themselves standing in the backyard at night, looking up at the night sky?

Wow the good old days top song
When I was a kid, we played war games, etc, in the backyard, never, did I think when I grew up I had to do it for real 😮
There's a big difference between playing games and the reality of what these men actually went through and the old digger's I used to love talking with on the bus or at a bus stop or in the pubs. Old bar flies had great stories .. some exaggerated but still funny as hell. But often behind that are still real wounds.
A beautiful aussie song
Listening to this underrated aussie song on ANZAC day 2020
Great song, amazing lyrics
always loved this. reminds me of someone I knew in the Army who is no longer alive - this was his fave song.
What a great band indeed. Great songs 🎵 love to everyone that is listing to this ❤️
If this post doesn’t move you in any way, shape or form, check your pulse. You may be dead inside and don’t realise it.
Makes me proud about my dad
Saw this band tonight, just the best! Great Aussie talent xxx
Awesome Song! Love this band -- Listened to them so many years ago back in Oz, and lately almost daily.
For all those who went to fight and never made it home.
I didn't understand what this song was about when I watched it as a kid thirty-five years later now I know Good song but so sad that people are scared of a flu in 2020 and yeah sad but so true God bless us all
Great song. First time i've heard it in 20 odd years
Song is about the Vietnam War and the compulsory scripting of young men.
for all who served, be it of a compulsory or voluntary nature, I thank you. for all who are still serving, stay safe while you do your duties, and return to your friends and families. thank you for your commitment.
Looking forward to 9 October to hear the gents again 🎙👍🏻 #Australialovesyou #1927 🇦🇺🎙♥️🎙🇦🇺
3:30 i know their acting & you can see the kid looking at the coach, but the fear in his eyes, most Aussie kid's growing up in the 80's would know this! It would be the belt or the jug cord if you got something wrong or did something wrong.
At the time it was scary knowing u were going to get a hiding because u fucked up but it was just a part of how kids were raised & disciplined back then...
This band plays from the heart genuinely so AUSSIE
It is 2023 and since this song came out I play it at least once on Anzac's day. I came to Australia in 1979 and was blessed to have left Argentina with enough time not to be drafted into the Fauklands/Malvinas war. That was a war where more than 14,000 young conscripts ill dressed, unfed and totally not trained for war were used as cannon fodder against the most modern army force of 1982.
Compulsory heroes trying to make it home!
The band struck gold finding this singer.
Beautiful song.
Lot of Oz bands don't get the recognition they deserve that's oz
I remember one Saturday sitting in my room for four hours to catch this song on tape. Still have the tape today but I've also since bought the record and a digital copy, but that tape I played to death as a kid transitioning into teen and just starting to really understand how serious life can be.
I never thought I would see this video clip on TH-cam; had been searching a while then gave up, so this is a really good surprise. Thanks Channel1927. I loved the song back in 1989 while in high school, and listening to this again in 2013 sent chills down my spine.
Well said fullboostturbo1.

Just love this band. Wish they would come to central QLD
Saw them at Mordy Festival in Melbourne last weekend , Still got it after over 30 years ...
