    Hey, Raphael.
    How are you? I found your channel 2 weeks ago and I think I've already watched all your videos. Simply amazing! Congratulations.
    You've once said your parents are from Brazil. Do you speak portuguese? I'm from Rio de Janeiro, but now living in Portugal.
    I have to build my wardrobe from scratch, I have just a few pieces of clothes, formal or casual. I love the idea of dressing-up - I follow Aaron Marino since the begining of his channel - but I confess I'm lazy. In Brazil, flip-flops and shorts are pretty much everything you need, but in Europe the standard is higher (and I appreciate it).
    My doubt is: When are we "allowed" to dress down? I work at home, so I don't have to dress-up in a daily basis and I just go sloppy everywhere.
    Thank you very much and keep going with this great work! You are a great inspiration.

      The Hebrew Barrister Funny story here actually. Several years ago now, I ended up in court over a dispute and the individual I was in dispute with came to court in this hideous, cheap, poorly fitting, metallic white suite and garish, metallic gold tie. I didn't own an actual suite at the time, however, I dressed well in fitted clothing and subdued colors, a decent blazer and a nice overcoat. Dressing down isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there is a time and a place for it. On top of context, it is also a lot about dressing well and with intent. A casual outfit with perfect fit will garner more respect than a dressier outfit with a poor fit in most situations.

      Same thing I find at times. Especially from people who are close to you. Perhaps they feel threatened. It comes easier though, since they’ll get used to it. Weird how it’s strangers who appreciate it more than your close friends. I’ve gone to Walmart with a three piece suit and gotten some compliments from people I didn’t know. They love it!
      I mean, people watch vintage films and say things like “Back when people actually dressed better!” But they do not dress up themselves. So my take is, be the change you want to see. Dress up!

    • @TuBui2
      @TuBui2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@2bitrasputin793 they're fundamental. Economics is (at it's most basic level) supply vs demand. One form of this is Money supply vs money demand. When there's a lack of money supply in the economy, the value of each existing unit of currency goes up and vice versa. A metric you might be familiar with is inflation. Banks are fundamental to helping grow and shrink this money supply in the economy through lending. This money can go into endless things, whether it's for consuming goods/services or investment into the business (which give people jobs and eventually pay taxes). While this is a rather rudimentary example, I hope it helps.

    I'm a diplomat working in Turkey and was invited to a charity concert (at night). I was picked up, in a brand new black BMW SUV, and to my surprise by colleagues wearing jeans and t-shirts, and sandals no doubt. Although very hot during the summer, I was utterly shocked by their lack of formality and respect for the event and event organizers. When I entered the car they said "Ok, first things first. Go home and change. You're making us look bad", to which I replied "I agree with going home and changing, but to your home. This is a concert after all.". We arrived and I was met by the organizer who ushered me to the front of the hall, unclipped the red velvet rope and sat me down next to several ministers. I wanted to ask him to reclip the rope and leave my colleagues in the aisle. This was based on my simple style of dark blue Chinos, a white dress shirt, a dark tan suede blazer and brown penny loafers. I purposely made an effort to sit directly next to the Turkish authorities to avoid photos taken of them sitting next to other diplomats in t-shirts. How have we come to this? Come one people, wake up!

    People do notice you if you look and dress well. You will stand out because so many men dress so poorly, sloppy and with not much real care. If you just put some effort into looking well, people around you notice. They will even if they say nothing. Just today I stopped by my local alteration store that does most my tailoring on my way home from work. I was dressed sharp and with a shirt jacket on. Though I wore the jacket to work, I didn’t keep it on all day being relaxed at the office. But you never know where your going to stop on your way home. As I walked into the store, the girl that usually do my cloth measurements immediately recognized me and shouted out my name just like that to her other coworker to get my cloth that was tailored. I was impressed she knew my name in full. She then commented how sharp I looked, including my nice shirt jacket style. She does have a part in me looking dressed well. As she has personally fitted me over and over in at least 50+ Trousers. I could see the girl had a sense of pride in not only me being a customer, but she seemed to feel great in mood in having fitted me often for tailoring and looking well dressed. People do pay attention even if you think they aren’t. Just dress well and go about your daily business or visiting places. People will surely react to you different how you appear in and around them.

      Ardent, Thanks for sharing your story. I live in Jersey and go to New York City often and I am mostly in a suit. And I sure notice that people usually do respect me more since I am wearing a nice suit. And I think people ask me for money more in New York because I dress in Double breasted or single-breasted suits, and they think I have money! People are definitely more polite and respectful to me wearing a suit than they would be if I was in a white T shirt, jeans and work boots. Keep dressing nice my friend. You are correct people do notice when you dress well ! All the best.

Not only does wearing a t-shirt to an interview make you 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 like a slacker, it probably makes you 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 like one too. A t-shirt and jeans makes me feel like I'm going for a leisurely walk outside. A jacket and tie gets me pumped and ready to work.

      I've always felt something awfully sinister and disingenuous about this Silicon Valley style. I guess it's the message it sends. Having the world's most powerful CEOs dress down to their employees might look like a friendly gesture, but it's a bit of a "wolf in sheep's clothing" situation where a man can instantly sell all your personal info to any corporation and will probably make your job disappear, but "he's totally okay, guys, not like those evil Business Suits".

    Whilst I broadly agree with the nine reasons dressing down is overrated, I think the general direction of the argument that dressing well is weighted more toward the world of business and commerce. I have worked in factories when I was younger and obviously dressed 'blue collar'. That said, I now work in education (a primary school teacher) and as a male teacher. I try to dress 'up' in order to bolster my authority. I don't wear a business suit however I do wear a formal shirt and jacket. My colleagues comment on my dressing 'up' - mostly in a positive way. The children, I think, notice that I've made a certain amount of effort and I'd hope it reflects in the way they behave;-)
    I do enjoy your videos. They are about the best on TH-cam (I've looked at others and I don't find them as good - in my humble opinion)...
    At the moment I'm searching thrift and vintage shops...must have quality pocket squares! Must get another tweed jacket!!!

I was stopped three times in one day in the train station by tourists asking if I spoke English and could I provide directions. Apparently, not dressing in sneakers, "mom" jeans, and a sweatshirt meant that I looked like a German businessman instead of an American tourist. It was quite funny to see their expressions when I told them I spoke English as well as they did and where I lived. I also remember when people dressed decently when traveling instead of like slobs.

    I feel like in today's world dressing up says "I don't care what others think about me" a lot more than dressing down. A lot of people will call you pretentious when you're the only one in a nice classy suit in a sea of jeans and graphic tees, but if you don't care and just stay true to your own style it makes you look a lot more confident and independent minded. I'm a woman but I'm very drawn to the whole gentleman culture this channel is all about, trying to craft my own variation of it without wearing the so-called power suits for women all the time.

    I worked in IT on Wall St for about 15 years. My philosophy was to dress for the job I wanted. The end result was that the snooty traders deferred to me over the other 'nerds'. They saw a man that dressed like a director and gave him that level of respect. Perception is everything.

    What some call "pandering to the opinions of others" I call "taking advantage of mindsets and reactions." Even if a man prefers to rock a more casual style in his day-to-day, learning to dress to a tee and look like a million bucks is a piece of badassery we should all have in our repertoire. I try to remember not to judge a book by its cover, and remember that everybody else DOES. Plus, looking sharp just feels sharp.

And while Belfort doesn't do this himself, he's also pointed out that some really hardcore salesmen dress up all the time, even on weekends, just to maintain their mental state and to always feel comfortable in their work clothes. Very much like method acting.

    I feel like you are saying that dressing down, and dressing bad are the same thing. There are a lot of things that you can’t wear in the office place, that are still nice and make you look good, although There are occasions where a nice fitted suit is the only option, but you don’t need to wear a suit everyday to look good and respectable. If you wear a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie everyday, that can be considered dressing down and it looks bad, however wearing a flannel, nice fitted jeans and clean white sneakers is also considered dressing down however no one will look at you badly

    I am a woman who enjoys your channel. I work in an industry where we dress for work. Even so, I dress to the best of my ability. I never where pants. I wear skirts, dresses, skirted suits, dress pumps, and good quality jewelry, brooches, and silk scarves. I feel my dress makes me more serious in my field, which as a woman is important. When I fly, I always dress well. Dressing well does not mean being uncomfortable. I wear a low heeled pump, a comfortable skirt, a jacket and sweater, and I carry a silk pashmina for warmth on the plane. When I go out to run errands, I dress nicely, too. Part of dressing up is how it makes you feel about yourself. It's about the respect you give yourself, which gives others the signal to respect you back. I have a similar story to Raphael about dressing to get a job. I dress when I get together with friends. One of my friends offered me a job that I really wanted. Since I always dress well even in casual settings, my friend sees me as competent and professional which helped me to get the job offer that I really wanted.

    Tbh I believe that there is a difference between dressing up and dressing well. Dressing up is a full suit whereas dressing well is wearing clothes that fit well, and reflects your personality in a good way. For example, well fitted chinos, plain t-shirt and Chelsea boots works better a lot of the time than a 3 piece suit

    • @sexyitalian891
      @sexyitalian891 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      sauce I disagree I wear well fitted 3 piece suits with tie and a pocket square every day and I'd be willing to bet 9/10 people would say I'm better dressed. It depends on the individual person and their body type but barely anyone wears a suit now. It's a treat when I get to see someone with a well put together suit because, I know it took some thought and time to put it together. Your outfit is very basic and takes very little forethought. You could have gone the extra mile but your outfit with the chinos and Chelsea boot and t shirt just shows me that you're being lazy in this regard. If your going to wear a plain t shirt you'd be far better off with some nice jeans and a great pair of sneakers. Your showing me you didnt care enough to really complete the look.

      @@lawfulbeneficiary1731 I will agree with you that looking your best is the way to go.
      That doesn't contradict the fact that a 3 piece suit is extremely out of place in most daily life situations, and you will end up looking comedic rather than stylish.
      I greatly enjoy dressing up, when I'm going on a date, cocktails, event, work(in a more business way).
      Part of being stylish is being able to do it in all situations. Saying you only wear a suit because it's your style is no different than saying you only wear a t-shirt because that's your style. You'd both be out of place and poorly dressed for several situations.

    • @lawfulbeneficiary1731
      @lawfulbeneficiary1731 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-iu1ru1qz7u there’s no such thing as being poorly dressed in a suit however I do agree with being overdressed but I believe always dressing your best regardless where you go makes you feel confident and happy which leads to a great fulfilment and contentment you know you look your best so you feel your best choosing to only feel your best for special occasions for me is simply ridiculous one simply can’t have such a thing wearing tshirt and jeans because one simply knows he looks basic and mediocre. I’ve seen that mediocre Chelsea jeans and tshirt style everywhere it’s honestly nothing special and honestly wearing a three piece suit that doesn’t match your skin completion and doesn’t have the right lapel can make you look very mediocre too that’s why one needs to know how to dress good as much as knowing to how to style the outfit too comes hand in hand

    I'm glad someone mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg's choice of clothes is awful. I think of him as a kid. His choice of a green t-shirt is not exciting, and not memorable. It's not that he needs to wear a suit and tie, although when he finally put that on for the hearing, I must say it did look good. But I wish he would be at least stylish casual, if anything. I have never found it interesting that the Facebook site I'm a member of is run by a kid in a green t-shirt. I don't care what he's worth, his current attire is as bland as a paper bag. Also, if Daniel Craig were not known, and not an international star,....he would in fact NOT look better than you in his casual jeans than you do in your suit. I've seen photos where Daniel Craig's stylist failed a bit. He didn't top you then. He's getting some residue halo effect from his celebrity status as a movie star and his roles as James Bond. If he was just an unknown guy with blonde hair.....your presentation would out do his.

    Well, actually, well-dressed down man can be much more impressive than neutral-dressed up one.
    I say that, because know many guys who have just one or two navy blue suits and think that it automatically makes them ultra attractive and stylish. They dont even have an idea that nowdays everybody has this goddamn navy blue suit in their closet, and that cool pair of sneakers and some classic bomber will bring to you much more attention and respect, because these pieces are the one that will get you out of the croud (we of course not talking about some events with written or at least typical classic dresscode, like theater or opera).
    If you check out some streetwear channels, you will find out that your goals are pretty simmilar, so Id say that the dressing up is not always better then dressing down or neutural, the key is in beeing WELL DRESSED, no matter what style do you prefer, classical, neutural or street one

    I appreciate how video blogs like the Gentelman's Gazette are bringing back everything that is positive about masculinity. In my opinion, being a gentleman means being a capable, thoughtful, and trustworthy person, someone who is always conscious of what is happening around him and will take action when needed. I would also say that you don't have to have an office job to care about your clothes. If you do physical work, insist on a proper, well-made work uniform and take good care of it. You get what you pay for. Well-made work clothes improve the image of the company while taking good care of the working man in all environments. I have great respect for anyone who clearly shows he has pride in his work. Also, you can wear your work clothes for the physical work you do in the day and then change in the evening to go out for dinner or just grab a drink with friends. The first rule is: don't wear to work or on the street the same clothes that you'd feel comfy sleeping in! (no sweatpants and hoodies please!). If you just wear a clean, collared shirt you're already miles ahead!

But as for somebody who has to start from the bottom, dressing up is an extremely strong leverage you can and SHOULD use to your advantage. It is up to you but in my opinion less is more than overselling yourself and under delivering but having casual attire yet having a more respectable personality have gotten me further than dressing up.

Dressing in classic menswear like suit and spots jacket combinations is far cheaper than in the more common sweatpants, flip flops, and athletic t shirt more commonly seen. Just this past week I picked up a very nice J. Press Grey Pinstripe Suit for $7 at a thrift store. Dry cleaning cost me $12. Then I let down the pants hem. Total cost of suit $19. In comparison a cheap mall t shirt cost around $25 to $30. I saved $6 and have a nice set of clothing that will last until I have grandchildren.

    Unsure if other people have mentioned it already, but one of the main reasons I dress well nowadays is because it's like a form of "uniform". Its a conscious signal to myself when I look in the mirror that I'm going to be meeting and speaking to co-workers/peers and to respect the people and places I go to. You show respect to other people by showing them that they were worth the time to "dress up". Maybe I've been too indoctrinated from schooling where we had uniforms, but when I see a well dressed man even doing the grocery shop I give this little nod of respect knowing they made an effort and didn't just roll out of bed and walk in with their pajamas.
