How big can we make Ralfy's remote control?

  • My brother Ralfy uses a remote to start and stop his camera when he's filming for his channel:-
    / ralfystuff
The conductive ink contacts on his remote were causing problems, so I fixed one of his remotes and offered to turn the other one into something a bit bigger. I didn't say HOW big though.
A few things went wrong along the way, but that happens. Initially I thought it wasn't working, but it seems to just put out a single burst of IR code for each press.
Update:- Ralfy loves his new monster-sized remote. It seems to work fine.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
    www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of TH-cam's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

A propos of nothing, I've been watching both your and Ralfy's channels for many years. I will never understand how it took me literally years to make the connection between you two. You guys occasionally reference one another and the Isle of Man, but it wasn't until a Christmas or New Year video some time back that I saw you together, spat out my tea and went "no fucking way". You guys really are quite an extraordinary couple of siblings. A whisky expert motorcycle champion archaeologist undertaker and a light engineer electrician technician programmer designer extraordinaire. I don't know why I'm writing this, I guess I just feel you should know there are people out there who really appreciate and admire you guys. Oh, and your video about how you took care of your mother with Alzheimer's moved me to tears. That's all. Best wishes from Belgium

Coincidentally, what you did here is what people in the Occupational Therapy field refer to as "switch adapting" a device. It when somebody, due to physical limitations due to injury/disability/aging/etc, can't hit a button or switch, they wire in a better suited switch or a 3.5mm audio jack for use with existing accessibility switches. I guess it also works well for being a smartass to your sibling! lol Nice project, Clive!

    • @Derundurel
      @Derundurel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The problem with mounting it on the lid is that the double-sided tape will let go in time. Gravity helps hold it if it is in the base. I'd have preferred it to be flat on the bottom for this reason. Better yet, mount it on the lid with better fixings!

Re: clickers. Back in the 1960s, when I was a kid, we got our first color TV. It had a round TV tube with the top and bottom masked off, but it was a big thing for us 'cause we could watch Bonanza in color. It had a sonic remote control (it was also the first TV we had with a remote) but, being a fancy one, it had an electronic unit instead of a clicker. The clickers on cheap sets used a tuning fork and a spring-loaded hammer to make a click of just the right frequency to change channels and turn up the sound. Turn up, but not down, as after it went up maybe 3 or 4 times it would drop to zero in the next click. You wound up the hammer when you pushed the button, a little like pulling the trigger on a double action revolver. Ours, being a fancier electronic unit, also allowed controlling brightness, color, and tint, and volume went both up and down. The problem with it, apart from having to replace batteries (carbon/zinc of a special, and expensive, size) frequently, was that sometimes, when you opened the sliding glass door in the living room, the sound of the door would change the channel.

With these I always add a decoupling capacitor for the IC, so that your battery life is prolonged. I tend to look on the "boards no longer functional" pile for a small SMD tantalum capacitor that will fit in the space, trying for around 10-22uF 16V or 25V capacitor, and solder it in appropriate places. That way the tiny little cells will still operate for a long time, till the internal resistance is so high that the IC cannot transmit any more. They last for months longer in use.

Our first colour TV [1977] had a remote that worked by sending an ultrasonic signal. I found that cats could hear it, and they didn't like the sound. They would jump up, startled by the sudden burst of 'invisible' noise. It would probably have worked for dogs too, but there were none about near me back then. There were three buttons 'On/Vol up', 'Vol down/Off', and 'Next channel'. Hitting the buttons like a crazed trumpet player had the best effect on the cats. Sadly, batteries left in the remote ruined it when they leaked.

Completely random question: When you designed your logo, did you intent it to look like the outline of a cartoon flying saucer, or was that just a happy coincidence? ;-)

Reminds me of the firing switch I made for rocket launches. Got a commercial big red button (emergency stop button from industrial equipment)and the safety key switch from a garbage compactor and put them on a big box (about 4" x 6" x 3") and wiring going to the battery with big clips as well as a run of about 20' to the pad.

Reminds me of fixing my parents late 80's TV remote in the mid 90's - they were always loosing it and breaking it. I built a 6" x 3" x 2" steel box. I put a Telephone clicky (like an early computer) keypad on top, some tactile switches on the side for volume and a stainless steel foot switch for the on off. The on off required two tumbs to operate and solved the problem of hitting the switch by accident. The large box let me run it on C cells instead of the AAA that only lasted a month. Remote ooutlasted the TV!..Oh it weighed 500g (a pound)

The was a U.S. company Zenith Radio, that made "clickers" with no electronics. They had small bits of metal tuning forks that were tuned for various ultrasonic frequencies, around 40 KHz, when you pressed a button, it would spring and force the tuning fork to vibrate. There were up to 6 different forks from around 38 to 44 KHz. The receiver had 6 different tuned circuit to detect each frequency, they were spaced about 500 Hz apart.

Speaking of a "clicker", my grandma had an old TV remote that had two bells in it with different pitches, so one changed the channel and the other changed the volume or something. Or maybe it switched between VHF and UHF, I can't remember.
I also remember seeing the movie UHF on an old TV, and it was on channel 9, which was a VHF channel.

I knew a fellow who worked as the lead tech in a Network Operations Center for a Telecom. Near the exit door of the server room were two large buttons of the sort you have there which he called "clown buttons" for obvious reasons. One on the right, which was yellow, opened the door; and one on the left, which set off the Halon fire protections system for the server room. This presented a problem because periodically visitors from the corporate office would come and visit the NOC and after their visit would, upon exiting, sometimes press the wrong button, setting off the fire protection system and cutting the power to the building and filling the room with unbreathable Halon gas forcing everyone in the room to have to leave quickly and stay out until the gas dissipated. Naturally this caused some red faces, either from embarrassment or from anger. Having happened once too often, a solution was found. The red button was encased in a clear plastic box with a spring loaded door on it that makes a piercing sound when opened to deter people from opening the box and pressing the button, unless there is an actual fire. The solution worked well and most people have learned not to open the button box anymore, however, he said that once in a great while someone is still determined to press the big red button undeterred by the screeching door on the box and again fills the room with Halon. C'est la vie. :)

    1. Try using your cellphone to detect IR LEDs... Usually works...
    2. Try putting a scope across the LED leads to see if there's burst of coded signals from the board...
    3. You might want to install a larger IR LED to get better coverage & range...

13:53 Kids, if you're fairly new to handling a soldering iron, don't do what Big Clive does here and desolder a wire from a metal contact you're holding on to. Put the contact in a third hand tool, put tension on the wire with one hand and only then melt the solder with the solering iron.
I learned this the hard way back in the early 80's. Let my experience serve to stop you from hurting yourself.

IR filters on smartphone cams have gotten a lot better over the past few years. My old iPhone could clearly see the matrix of IR dots that the Kinect's laser projected when it was running, but my new Samsung phone can't at all. It can barely see the laser when it's aimed straight at it.

Regarding sticking tape on plastics: This kind of plastics (Polypropylene, polyethylene, etc) does not have a plastifier in it that makes it hard to glue - they are genuinely hard to glue by themselves in their molecular composition. Mechanically scratching it works independent of that, of course.

If I remember correctly from many years ago working at a large distributor as an engineer, the IR remote control chips were way cheaper than any microcontroller. At the time there were not many cheaper than about £0.50 in volume but the IR chips were £0.08. If the same ratio has been maintained then the IR chips will be down to about £0.01 at most, as you can get some very simple microcontrollers from the likes of LCSC for less than £0.10.

Adhesives on plastic can be tricky. Had a windshield washer tank(plastic) develop a crack and to fix it I used a special kit with an epoxy specifically formulated to bond to the plastic of the tank. Nothing else seemed to get a good bond, but this stuff really seemed to stick with a vengeance. The downside was that it was really more expensive than I could have predicted but at least it worked well.

IR blasters put out timed pulses (kinda Morse-code-y) that have to match a sequence in the receiving device to be recognized. Different manufacturers and devices use different codes for each function, and they don't overlap. Pretty sure you can find databases of the different code sets used by different devices online, if you ever want to try building a custom universal remote.

It trips me up all the time because I am in such a habit of twisting in a clockwise Direction and I wind up I'm doing the factory twist in the Ericsson power cable
