I love this video! The food budget is the highest that I have ever experienced and you all have shown the challenges families go through. Especially when each person wants something different or has different tastes and palettes. I grew up where what mom served was what you ate, period. So to have a mother who gives you choices is someone to embrace. Yes food costs are high but each one of you get to make choices that enhances your life plus honoring each others choice. Thank you for sharing this video with the rest of us.

I constantly order food but I think there are lots of easy vegetarian meal options for instance 1) vegetable Stir-Fry: Sauté an assortment of vegetables (e.g., bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, snap peas) in olive oil or sesame oil. Add soy sauce, garlic, and ginger for flavor. Serve with rice or noodles.
2)Spaghetti: Cook spaghetti. In a pan, sauté garlic in olive oil until golden, add red pepper flakes, and toss with the cooked pasta. Garnish with fresh parsley.
    3) Grilled Cheese Sandwich: Butter two slices of bread, place cheese between them, and grill until the bread is toasted and the cheese is melted.
    4) Quesadilla: Fill a tortilla with cheese and any desired vegetables (like bell peppers, onions, or mushrooms). Fold and grill until the cheese is melted. Serve with salsa, sour cream, or guacamole.
    5) Vegetarian Tacos: Fill tortillas with sautéed vegetables, beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and avocado. Top with salsa or hot sauce.
    6) Lentil Soup: Cook lentils with diced tomatoes, onions, carrots, celery, garlic, and vegetable broth. Season with salt, pepper, and any desired herbs.
    7) Paneer Tikka Masala: Sauté paneer cubes in a tomato-based sauce with spices like garam masala, turmeric, and cumin. Serve with rice.
    8) Mushroom Risotto: Slowly cook Arborio rice with sautéed mushrooms, adding vegetable broth little by little. Finish with Parmesan cheese and butter.
Stuffed Bell Peppers: Fill bell peppers with a mixture of cooked rice, beans, corn, tomatoes, and cheese. Bake until the peppers are tender.
    9) Vegetarian Burrito Bowl: Layer rice, beans, sautéed veggies, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and avocado in a bowl. Top with salsa or guacamole. Now that your podcast made me think how much money I am spending on everyday food, I think I will start cooking at home

When I had all four of my kids at home, each one got to pick what they wanted me to make for dinner once a week. That way they each had at least one night that they ate dinner without complaining. I always expected at least one “Eww, yuck” comment at each meal. I would remind them that their turn to choose was coming. The most important thing is that the family sits down together for dinner EVERY night.

In the context of cooking food I would give A to zarna aunty for
    a) her trying to make kids understand that protein rich diet is very important
    b) for her knowing the benefits of being vegetarian ( Zoya also shares the A for this)
    c) for aunty trying to cut down on unnecessary costs on wastage of food.
As a suggestion I would say rice and dal and chole would be a delicious and high protein packed meal which all your family members would enjoy having . The chole can be replaced with rajma or tofu/paneer masala etc.
BTW just a fun fact in india nobody gets the liberty to choose the food/dish except for few days in a month. We all have to eat whatever our mothers cook for us 😅. You kids are so lucky that aunty is actually discussing about the food likes of family.❤

Wow thanks for discussing this cost and waste of food. Like that is a really issue now with families with older children and everyone is pretty much working and busy or on different schedules. We did the boxed food system which worked but is pricey and I wanted menus I am more familiar with was my issue with ordering. My daughter really enjoyed following the recipes.

I cook 3 - 4 different dishes in large quantities every week. Each week menu will cover both western and asian dishes. Whether we eat together or not, we eat whatever that is home cooked. Ordering out is a rare once or twice occasion a month. Steaks is only on birthdays or celebratory occasion. We spent less than $400/month for 3 people none of whom are vegetarians. my kids are asked to provide dinner at least once during winter break. my son makes good fried rice and my daughter makes wonderful teriyaki salmon.

Loved the banter!!! @Shalabh stop pulling Zarna's leg at every opportunity (btw Mango Lassi is made with yogurt/curd not milk) and for the first time Shalabh outed himself with his logic of intermittent fasting and laughing at himself as soon as he said spinach. Zarna you deserve all the love in the world and an "A" for managing so many different choices. Contrary to normal belief, a usual Indian household in India still eat a common meal with probably just snacking differently in the evening. @Brij: John Abraham and Virat Kohli - the popular Vegans for you to check on! @Gargs Do try a normal kheer with jaggery before going to bed sometime, its homemade, its heavenly! ❤

I am an immigrant, too. Eating a family meal in America is like climbing Mt. Everest. I thought your family is all Indians so it shouldn't be a problem, but now I realize it's the same woe. Growing up in Asia, my grandma (living with us), parents, sister & I ate the same meals. All meals were all cooked from scratch by my mom. Nobody is picky. Everyone eats the same things. We even had sweet red bean soup for tea time. Here, I married an American who is a super picky eater & eats like a toddler (bland food). Along with the food culture in America, we could barely eat together as a family, either at home or outside. Trying my best, I could make breakfast & homemade dinner for 2 high school kids & I (family of 5) since my oldest kid is in college also.

The fact that we are what we eat is true as when I stoped eating meat and sugar foods and lived on veg i felt really good like a beautiful flower and the food was slow burning and didn't weigh much so I was able to move around a lot more comfortable than I ever had before and i felt happy energy from the food

    well
I agree the difficulty in keeping up buying, cutting, cooking cleaning..and if you have little ones..feeding is another task..but homemade food wins..if you train every family member to learn to
    cook!

I can totally understand this…we are a family of 3…my husband, my cat and I. And I swear the three of us can never agree over 1 meal 😑

Super fun...I put all the snacks and nuts in containers so it is easy for kids to close and put it away...it won't get spoiled 😄...100% agree on how expensive groceries are newer days

You are not alone in this Zarna! My children are 3 and 7 now and I can already imagine in years to come I will have the same dilemma. Thankfully the husband and I have similar/predictable eating habits

We have a family of 3. We spend a lot of money on groceries. However, we try to buy clean products as much as possible. That includes unprocessed or low-processed and organic products. We do not eat out or order food deliveries. Eating out and ordering in is saved for special occasions for 2 reasons: 1. it is more expensive than cooking at home, and 2. you can control what quality of products and how much salt and fat you put in your food you cook at home.
I give an A to your daughter as she seems to be more diplomatic yet she sticks to her believes.

Zoya always deserves an “A” - I relate to her the most! The bickering between Zarna and her husband is hilarious, and poor Vir and Brij is always trying to keep up. 😂
