Unless you are doing a test review, in this weather I'd definitely be putting my tent under a tarp in this weather.. And for those who haven't tested their tents for waterproofing - then putting it under your tarp is even more important.
The tent should always be under the tarp completely, why would you trust a tent's waterproof rating 100 percent of the time. The tarp being over it as an additional fly is always there to protect you.
I’ve tested my Big Agnes Copper Spur in major storms. It’s good to know that your gear will withstand inclement weather. As for the tarp being in a separate area, it allows you to sit and cook in dry conditions without having to be in the confines of a tent. Luke sets up his camp like this all the time. He’s always testing gear so it makes sense.
@@MsRotorwings Everything I've ever done as a camper screams at me that he's doing it wrong. If he's staying in the cabin and doing it on a storm test that's one thing but for his own personal trips I'd always have the tarp over the tent entrance to ensure that it's always dry and he doesn't have a ruined trip.
I think he doesn't want all that campfire smoke polluting his tents and sleeping bags. He also could have an alarm system that gives him more safety if tent and tarp shelters are separate.
As a youngster I did a lot of camping with the scouts in the mid 70's until about '80. We never had a "general shelter" like a good tarp provides. Maybe they were too heavy back then. I would never go out today without a large, good tarp.
I was a scoutmaster in the late 80's and early 90's. Equipment has come so far since then. You are right, tarps were heavy and not always fully waterproof in Western Washington back then. You could equate tarps back then with Harbor Freight tarps today. We always carried transparent plastic to throw over the tent. Never put up a tarp for general gathering since the plastic was too prone to ripping. This video brings back so many memories, Thank you, so much.
Great video Luke ! Glad you missed the tornadoes. I love storms (blizzards, heavy rain, strong winds, but I say no to tornadoes, hurricanes , avalanches, floods, earthquakes. Those are forces of nature that you cannot stand against. The best remedy is, "not be there"! I think that I've mentioned that I grew up 70 miles from Lake Superior in the far north of Wisconsin. So blizzards and powerful winds, heavy rain are all part of daily life there. I LOVE the sound of a blizzard. Puts me to sleep in no time flat. Same with high winds or heavy rain. The last 50 years have been in Colorado. You were in my back yard at Electric Pass, American Lake, Ashcroft, etc. Your trip to Mount of the Holy Cross wasn't too far away from home. Have enjoyed watching you and Suzy for the last few years. I'm glad to see her "step out" and do some solo stuff. She's great, so are you.

Usually, tornadoes in the mountains are short-lived; however, on April 27, 2011, an ef4 tornado tore through the Great Smoky Mountains over 10 miles. This was after it began in Cherokee National Forest in Monroe county, TN. It crossed over Chilhowee Lake and entered the park and tore up the mountains. Not much info was shared about it because this is a very remote area of the park. I know about it because I live close to where it was.. love your videos!

About the same here in Texas. We have a high tornado risk here in the Dallas/Ft Worth area and whenever we get a warning, we know immediately what's going on.
Tornado warnings are issued if a tornado had been spotted in the field or the radar shows a tornado signature. Radar indicated tornados don’t always materialize into a real tornado.
Yes Larry you are right. I live in tornado alley. A warning means a funnel cloud has been spotted. A watch means conditions are favorable for a warning.
BTW, don't fret much over lighting. These new cameras all have High Dynamic Range and excellent low-light sensitivity. Instead of muddled darkness, we're seeing dramatic contrasts, all in good focus. Great stuff!
Many years ago, my wife and I did a fair amount of camping on our motorcycle. We has a two person tent that I don't remember the brand. Very easy to set up and took up very little space on the bike. At the time I had a trailer I could pull behind the bike . We camped with and without the trailer depending on how long we would be gone. This particular tent had a water proof bottom and up the side about 4 inches. It had a separate waterproof rainfly that went over the top about 4 inches for air to totally surround the tent. On the front door and back window, the fly went past the tent about a foot. You could zip down the door and window about half way to expose the screen. We went through some of the strongest rain storms in that tent and NEVER had a drop of water come through with the screens open. I have never seen another tent like it. I have noticed in your and others videos, most of the tents do NOT have an extra waterproof rainfly. I even watched a video last evening with the guy having a huge tent attached to his Jeep. It did not have a floor attached to the tent but one you throw on the ground. It did not attach to the sides of the tent. Totally open to varmints. Personally, I don't care for tents that attached to the vehicle. Thanks for your videos. Very interesting.

I wish you would show more on how you set up your tarp shelters. I bought the anchors and 4 elephant poles and still struggle and setting up a tarp by myself. It has been a 2 hour struggle.
My cheap 50 euros décathlon tent could hold up that kind of weather fairly easily and that's just because the fly must be too close to the mesh in this case and the winds pushes it onto it
We live basically in a forest. Lots of trees. Mostly a flat roof. The window is open. It's cool watching you and listening to the rain falling on the roof and through the leaves outside. I know what you mean about the canopy delaying rain reaching the ground.

Luke, This episode brought me back to my younger days when my buddy and I would camp in the woods. This was at a time when cell phones (and most of the gear you have) were not even thought of. Pack your stuff and head off into the woods and take it as it comes. Great times for sure. The rain hitting the tarp is like music to me. Very relaxing. Thank you sir!

That would defeat the entire point of testing the tents overall capabilities. Hell a Walmart tent would do well in storms if it has a tarp protecting it lol

I agree with your decision to stay in the cabin. It just seems like it would have been a very long and miserable night trying to sleep in a wet tent, and with a wet blanket. I love your show! And I love instant coffee too!

You have way more nerve than I. No way would I want to be stuck under a tree during an electrical strorm. I have had too many close calls. Crazy weather. Send some down to Louisiana...we need it bad. We used to get the classic severe stroms in the spring and summer but it has been pretty quite this year. Yea...that cabin looks so warm and comfortable. Good decision.

For the first time in my life, a month or so ago, we just had two tornadoes in as many weeks, here in western Montana, right in the middle of the Rockies !! Rare, but it does happen. Weather is getting nuts, for sure. The poles magnetic field has gone haywire and is affecting the weather (and animals).
I started watching your videos of camping in winter storms or rain storms and they don’t stop being my favorites even though it’s been a while without camping snow storm videos.
I live on Petoskey St. in Gaylord, MI. I was home when the tornado went through last spring. Got my cats in the bathroom, and the next ten minutes were the scariest of my life. We were very lucky, not much damage to our home. No power for a couple days, but since we like to camp we had supplies for ourselves, and were able to help out our neighbor with a battery bank to keep her phone charged.

I love camping in a downpour but lightning , or the chance of falling trees make me nervous . Also , not a big fan of tents with the poles on the outside of the fly , every fly attachment point is a source of leaking , jmo
You know what, I stumbled over your videos, I don't know how and I'm not even sure why the original video was even recommended to me as I hadn't watched or searched for anything related to what you do. That said I've watched a fair few now and I have to say that they're actually really enjoyable. I usually watch channel like these for a while and then I move on. If they've left an impression on me I'll randomly remember the channel and go back and see what they've been up to and binge through the video. However in this case I genuinely going to subscribe. I can see myself sticking around for a while. The rain certainly helps as I am a big lover of rain, if it could rain every other day without causing any issues at all I'd personally choose for it to do that. Anyway, I haven't camped for many many years but I enjoy the reviews, even if I'm never going to buy any of it. The videos are calm, informative and relaxing. Relaxing to the point that I had a video on last week and was watching it a bit before bed and as I was laying there I caught myself falling asleep half way through almost an hour video, don't worry, I picked it back up that next morning. Keep up the great videos and all the best to you.
I must admit that I did find the juxtaposition of the storm warning close-up, followed by the shot of you standing forlornly beneath the tarp in the torrential rain storm, really very funny. Nice comedic touch.

The sound of the rain on your tarp was almost mesmerizing. You make camping in the rain look like fun! I have had a few experiences camping in the rain, but a 1:30 a.m. tornado warning was NOT fun.

The last one I ever have heard about was, I think, during hurricane Camille, years ago. They were on the beachfront and the wind-driven rain and tidal surge killed all of the, people at that, "party" except for a 12-year-old boy, who was found clinging to a tree. That's to the best of my memory and it was a long time ago, now, as I'm old now... There was also a camping video where the guy, in Canada purposely went camping in the hurricane from last year, I think it was. I asked him if he was out of his mind! He had a wife at home carrying a baby. He did finally split and went back home, thankfully. But people do such things, but I think he truly got scared out of his gourd and left out for home. Having gone through many hurricanes in all the years we've lived here--It's not a cause for a party and neither is it the time to go camping in one (in the woods.)!!!

Hi Luke, we just had winds and a major storm and we lost two huge trees. We lost another one that took out the electricity for a week. All of this happened a week apart. That storm brought straight line wind at 82 mph. Down came 4 trees. None of them caused any problems. Lucky. God was sitting right beside me while all of this was happening. It took 2 hours for this major storm to leave. It was wild. Still here and kicking crocks ( boots). To hot for my boots. Hope y’all had a beautiful vacation.

Great video! Looks like a fun trip. I have done a little tarp camping, mostly in the winter and always closer to the ground. It's interesting to seeing new techniques. IIRC that swagman role is climashield, it really can't hold moisture and will dry from body heat in an hour or so. It will insulate fine when wet too.

I live in a mountainous area in NY. Twenty three + years ago NY had 51 tornadoes come through the state. My region the tornados traveled the mountain ridges. It leveled a 800 acers forest. Frigging kool to see the damage mother nature can throw around. Blessings to all.

6 liters of water during your Hawaii hike, I'd been wondering & asked in the comments. Now I know, & you & Susie & the other hiker consumed all 6 liters. That's a lot of water to consume in a day. You & Susie will be a big part of the other hiker's memory for the rest of his life. 30:46 - that HOT meal, I'm sure, was devoured/inhaled. 37:34 - The CABIN - was an excellent idea from the get-go. I have experienced from the basement, what was likely a very weak tornado in our former TN yard. Did damage to the dock and trees and neighbor homes. We were lucky. By the way, not every community still has a tornado siren. Do know the name of the county you are in if a visitor. Weather forecasts and emergency bulletins are based on the county name. Glad Luke you had the cabin to retreat to as a safe dry spot to sleep. Sorry that tent was not water tight. I really enjoyed you Hawaiian adventure with Susie.

Hi Luke, shout out from Northeast Minnesota. Your videos have given me fantastic ideas for tent halves and tarps. But if I may offer a little bit of constructive criticism, I think the Gazelle tent is a fixable issue. I've written the company suggesting a possible fix. Although the design of the tent itself would never survive a Vermillion national Forest storm , it would make a great yard tent. Please keep doing what you do and if you find yourself this way, look me up, I'll show you why lake Superior dictates the weather in all seasons here. God bless you and many happy trails
Luke, Brother my hat is off to you. Those storms were so strong here in Kingsport. The fire department was running like crazy. We had heavy rains and wind with timber down every where! Took my dog out early the next morning and a huge tree fell up in the mountain behind my house. Scared the crap out of me! P.S. I'm glad you and Susie managed to make it through the heavy crowds at the Tri-Cities Airport. LOL

BTW, don't fret much over lighting. These new cameras all have High Dynamic Range and excellent low-light sensitivity. Instead of muddled darkness, we're seeing dramatic contrasts, all in good focus. Great stuff!
Many years ago, my wife and I did a fair amount of camping on our motorcycle. We has a two person tent that I don't remember the brand. Very easy to set up and took up very little space on the bike. At the time I had a trailer I could pull behind the bike . We camped with and without the trailer depending on how long we would be gone. This particular tent had a water proof bottom and up the side about 4 inches. It had a separate waterproof rainfly that went over the top about 4 inches for air to totally surround the tent. On the front door and back window, the fly went past the tent about a foot. You could zip down the door and window about half way to expose the screen. We went through some of the strongest rain storms in that tent and NEVER had a drop of water come through with the screens open. I have never seen another tent like it. I have noticed in your and others videos, most of the tents do NOT have an extra waterproof rainfly. I even watched a video last evening with the guy having a huge tent attached to his Jeep. It did not have a floor attached to the tent but one you throw on the ground. It did not attach to the sides of the tent. Totally open to varmints. Personally, I don't care for tents that attached to the vehicle. Thanks for your videos. Very interesting.

I wish you would show more on how you set up your tarp shelters. I bought the anchors and 4 elephant poles and still struggle and setting up a tarp by myself. It has been a 2 hour struggle.

If you are expecting that much rain, why don't you put your tent under the tarp too?? I mean I don't think any tent could withstand that much rain.
Mostly it's because he is weather testing the tent.
My cheap 50 euros décathlon tent could hold up that kind of weather fairly easily and that's just because the fly must be too close to the mesh in this case and the winds pushes it onto it
We live basically in a forest. Lots of trees. Mostly a flat roof. The window is open. It's cool watching you and listening to the rain falling on the roof and through the leaves outside. I know what you mean about the canopy delaying rain reaching the ground.

Luke, This episode brought me back to my younger days when my buddy and I would camp in the woods. This was at a time when cell phones (and most of the gear you have) were not even thought of. Pack your stuff and head off into the woods and take it as it comes. Great times for sure. The rain hitting the tarp is like music to me. Very relaxing. Thank you sir!

You have way more nerve than I. No way would I want to be stuck under a tree during an electrical strorm. I have had too many close calls. Crazy weather. Send some down to Louisiana...we need it bad. We used to get the classic severe stroms in the spring and summer but it has been pretty quite this year. Yea...that cabin looks so warm and comfortable. Good decision.

For the first time in my life, a month or so ago, we just had two tornadoes in as many weeks, here in western Montana, right in the middle of the Rockies !! Rare, but it does happen. Weather is getting nuts, for sure. The poles magnetic field has gone haywire and is affecting the weather (and animals).
I started watching your videos of camping in winter storms or rain storms and they don’t stop being my favorites even though it’s been a while without camping snow storm videos.
I live on Petoskey St. in Gaylord, MI. I was home when the tornado went through last spring. Got my cats in the bathroom, and the next ten minutes were the scariest of my life. We were very lucky, not much damage to our home. No power for a couple days, but since we like to camp we had supplies for ourselves, and were able to help out our neighbor with a battery bank to keep her phone charged.

I love camping in a downpour but lightning , or the chance of falling trees make me nervous . Also , not a big fan of tents with the poles on the outside of the fly , every fly attachment point is a source of leaking , jmo
You know what, I stumbled over your videos, I don't know how and I'm not even sure why the original video was even recommended to me as I hadn't watched or searched for anything related to what you do. That said I've watched a fair few now and I have to say that they're actually really enjoyable. I usually watch channel like these for a while and then I move on. If they've left an impression on me I'll randomly remember the channel and go back and see what they've been up to and binge through the video. However in this case I genuinely going to subscribe. I can see myself sticking around for a while. The rain certainly helps as I am a big lover of rain, if it could rain every other day without causing any issues at all I'd personally choose for it to do that. Anyway, I haven't camped for many many years but I enjoy the reviews, even if I'm never going to buy any of it. The videos are calm, informative and relaxing. Relaxing to the point that I had a video on last week and was watching it a bit before bed and as I was laying there I caught myself falling asleep half way through almost an hour video, don't worry, I picked it back up that next morning. Keep up the great videos and all the best to you.
I must admit that I did find the juxtaposition of the storm warning close-up, followed by the shot of you standing forlornly beneath the tarp in the torrential rain storm, really very funny. Nice comedic touch.

The sound of the rain on your tarp was almost mesmerizing. You make camping in the rain look like fun! I have had a few experiences camping in the rain, but a 1:30 a.m. tornado warning was NOT fun.

@@charlieo.farmer2468 I'm glad to know that charlieo. We live in Cajun Country in Southwest Louisiana and people used to throw, hurricane parties. The last one I ever have heard about was, I think, during hurricane Camille, years ago. They were on the beachfront and the wind-driven rain and tidal surge killed all of the, people at that, "party" except for a 12-year-old boy, who was found clinging to a tree. That's to the best of my memory and it was a long time ago, now, as I'm old now... There was also a camping video where the guy, in Canada purposely went camping in the hurricane from last year, I think it was. I asked him if he was out of his mind! He had a wife at home carrying a baby. He did finally split and went back home, thankfully. But people do such things, but I think he truly got scared out of his gourd and left out for home. Having gone through many hurricanes in all the years we've lived here--It's not a cause for a party and neither is it the time to go camping in one (in the woods.)!!!

Hi Luke, we just had winds and a major storm and we lost two huge trees. We lost another one that took out the electricity for a week. All of this happened a week apart. That storm brought straight line wind at 82 mph. Down came 4 trees. None of them caused any problems. Lucky. God was sitting right beside me while all of this was happening. It took 2 hours for this major storm to leave. It was wild. Still here and kicking crocks ( boots). To hot for my boots. Hope y’all had a beautiful vacation.

IIRC that swagman role is climashield, it really can't hold moisture and will dry from body heat in an hour or so. It will insulate fine when wet too.

I live in a mountainous area in NY. Twenty three + years ago NY had 51 tornadoes come through the state. My region the tornados traveled the mountain ridges. It leveled a 800 acers forest. Frigging kool to see the damage mother nature can throw around. Blessings to all.

I have experienced from the basement, what was likely a very weak tornado in our former TN yard. Did damage to the dock and trees and neighbor homes. We were lucky. By the way, not every community still has a tornado siren. Do know the name of the county you are in if a visitor. Weather forecasts and emergency bulletins are based on the county name. Glad Luke you had the cabin to retreat to as a safe dry spot to sleep. Sorry that tent was not water tight. I really enjoyed you Hawaiian adventure with Susie.

Hi Luke, shout out from Northeast Minnesota. Your videos have given me fantastic ideas for tent halves and tarps. But if I may offer a little bit of constructive criticism, I think the Gazelle tent is a fixable issue. I've written the company suggesting a possible fix. Although the design of the tent itself would never survive a Vermillion national Forest storm , it would make a great yard tent. Please keep doing what you do and if you find yourself this way, look me up, I'll show you why lake Superior dictates the weather in all seasons here. God bless you and many happy trails

Luke, Brother my hat is off to you. Those storms were so strong here in Kingsport. The fire department was running like crazy. We had heavy rains and wind with timber down every where! Took my dog out early the next morning and a huge tree fell up in the mountain behind my house. Scared the crap out of me! P.S. I'm glad you and Susie managed to make it through the heavy crowds at the Tri-Cities Airport. LOL
