My father lied about his age in the late 40s to get a job working lookouts in the mountains of Washington. He was 17 his first year and worked alone for the whole summer on top of a mountain. He had a ton of stories of those years he would share with me on our backpacking trips in my youth. He passed a couple of years ago and I miss him dearly.
@@nthans Here is a quick one (and probably the most funny he ever shared). One of the summits he worked on had an outcropping which was a jumble of rocks at the edge of the mountain. The outhouse was placed on top of the rocks. On cold windy nights, you would have to time your "business" with the wind gusts that came up the valley and up the face of the mountain side. One particular night the wind was howling and my father had to go. While taking care of business, he heard a gust coming up the valley and before he could finish and get out, the gust came up through the rocks and up and out of the hole in the outhouse. My father said that "my jacket was blown up and over my head and the wind was COLD!" As he put it, "it was like sitting on the backside of a jet engine". As a kid, you can imagine the fit of laughter I had at that story.

In 1977 I worked for the Forest Service in Oregon. We maintained the logging roads in the National Forest and our crew was often working on the exposed ridges of the Cascades. As the foreman, I had to make sure that we were not exposed to the dangers of lightning storms. The storms would start to build up at around 1300 hours and would move from south to north. As the fully developed thunderheads began to put out lightning, at about 1630-1700 hours, the fire lookouts would send radio messages to the Ranger District headquarters dispatchers. I would hear each lookout as they reported that they were going off the air for a storm in their vicinity and would start moving my crew down the mountain when the lookout 20 miles to the south of us went off the air. We tried to be well down the mountain before the storm reached us. Several times we found trees that had been destroyed by lightning and slabs of wood 30-40 feet long and a foot or two wide by a foot thick were scattered across the road. That was the incentive to be away from the ridge tops when a storm came up the line of the mountains.

my Grandma cooked in cast iron all the way up until she passed away, the food was always great. Cast Iron was always clean and oiled and ready to go. great seasoning.
It's amazing to cook on! Gotta keep them clean and then oiled after using for sure. Something I have found that is super important after cooking on it.
Our grandparents cooked food tasted so much better then, without all the additives, colourings etc. I still have one of my grandmas frying pan - and it is clean and oiled ready to use.
Just got back home from our property in MT. There is no descriptive word that conveys the deep visceral feeling you get when you’re standing on a MT mountain. From sunrise to sunset and then starlight can only be experienced because words fail to describe the beauty. Have ridden out rain, hail and this year wind that I was pretty sure was going to pick up our little camper and send me down into Flathead Lake. Off the grid is another life. The moment we leave, we start counting the days until we return.
Gotta love, a man who can cook! Add in the views. What a perfect setting. This planet certainly has some beautiful, captivating, serene landscapes. Thank you so much for the video!
Haha thank you! Some may see the cooking and more as overkill, but I love doing it. It’s relaxing and fun for me. Thanks for joining along on this upload!
Great video. Really enjoyed it. I have worked with a state forest service for 40 years. I spent my first 10-12 years as a lookout in a fire tower. I spent a lot of hours in the tower. It is a different place to be during lightning storms or windy days. The fire towers in our area are 84 feet off of the ground to the floor height. They are all metal tower structures. Even the cabin on top has just metal sheeting covering the metal frame. Scary whenever lightning storms popped up. High winds would cause the tower to sway and cause the metal siding to pop and bang loud when higher wind gust would hit them. They were grounded well, and when lightning would strike the tower it would usually just go through the frame and to the ground. But it was always a wild ride. But the fire towers are no longer used in our area now. Times and technology has changed everything. It seems a shame to me knowing that the people that work in forestry here now will never have that experience. I feel blessed to have worked during those times.

Hi, I live in sweden and love nature❤ always been hiking in deep woods and mountains. To be part of the nature is to enter another part of our selfe, I belive. Another way to cook a wonderful stake is to put the stake in a plasticbag, throw in some rosemary, time, fresh garlic, salt ,pepper (pepper with lemonflawor is also greate) Put in lots of honey, sweet chili sause, and some dark vinegar. Close the bag and tos it around a bit, so everything blends together. You can do this at home, the bag needs to be in a frige or coler. When you arive at you camp-destination the meat is jucy and have lots of flawor😊 The stake can be in the bag for several hours. When you Cook the stake, you can use the wet ingrediense that are left and you got a delicious gravy😋 Love your video, next time you got that lovely view and there are a thunderstorm coming, put the camera so we can see the lightning . My father-in-law manned a fire tower in Montana in the 1930's. It was torn down but I think it was in the Missoula district. We have the letters he wrote home to his parents. One thing I remember is on Friday night one of the other men in a tower would play his radio over the lines so the guys could hear it it. I think it was about an hour that it was allowed. My father-in-law had to hike for his water daily.
Love hearing these stories of folks working the towers in the earlier times of their existence. Had to have some wild stories to tell I bet as a result too.
I wonder if being in that tower when it rained was the favorite time to be up there of the forest service individuals…… No fires to watch out for, just chillin’ with the dog or cat and a good book.
@@antonleimbach648 only thing would be lighting and having to watch for that. That’s how a majority of the remote fires get started. If it was just rain, the chill factor would be 100 for sure!
I live in Missouri. I made some hamburger hash in my cast iron on a Colorado mountain camp last week. Twas pristine. Did a crazy hike in RMNP, spent several days in Poudre Canyon camping, hiking and catching trout....I literally teared up a bit when I left. The mountains are like a different planet to me.
Sounds like you had a great time! And I can totally understand the feeling about the mountains and just being out there. Something else about it and something that not many will understand.
Tent camping in a campground surrounded by people in Yellowstone and the Tetons was still amazing and fun but that setup and view you have here are outrageously beautiful, thanks for sharing this! Also, for snacks Kettle brand Thai Sweet Chili chips are a must-have!

I also like cripsy green beans, chewy vegetables give me a weird feeling. Also great video :) very pleasant to watch! Thank you! Also your dog gives me so much joy
Great video! My mentor always told me why something happened with food if something turned out not as expected. In the case of your mushy sweet potatoes there are a couple things that can cause them to get mushy. 1. The temperature was too low, causing them to steam instead of frying or sautéing. 2. There was too much liquid introduced. Sweet potatoes release moisture of their own and when combined with too much liquid they will steam as well. 3. You overcooked them, which will also cause them to turn mushy. This usually happens when the cut size is small. I like mushy sweet potatoes. They absorb flavors really well. That is why you often see mashed (sweet) potatoes on the side ;)
Wow. Gorgeous video, thank you so much for posting your experience on a mountaintop. I love thunderstorms and enjoyed sharing your experience being in the middle of one! Subscribed and will be watching more. ❤

@@joycedellinger2528 glad you were able to find the video!
Sounds like it was a wild night for you on the 25th as well. That is when I had stayed and filmed this video.
Appreciate the support!
I LOVE the storm. It’s so beautiful!
It was quite the experience!
Id be sleeping to sound of that rain and wind. Sounds amazing!
It was quite the experience that's for sure!
my Grandma cooked in cast iron all the way up until she passed away, the food was always great. Cast Iron was always clean and oiled and ready to go. great seasoning.
It's amazing to cook on! Gotta keep them clean and then oiled after using for sure. Something I have found that is super important after cooking on it.
@hunter_pauley true. She also had a cast iron roaster she cooked Turkey and Holiday Hams in
Our grandparents cooked food tasted so much better then, without all the additives, colourings etc. I still have one of my grandmas frying pan - and it is clean and oiled ready to use.
Thanks!
MASSIVE THANKS for the support on this video 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Man that view! The green interior looks ethereal, when the sun hits it.
Also... Goldfish, all day; everyday.
@@Meadow_24 the views were something else for sure! Appreciate the support on this upload 🙏🏽
I 100% agree. There is just something about the air and scenery that makes it feel so special to some. It’s a great area! 🙏🏽
Some of the storms around the lake this year were awful. The one storm a few months back took down several trees on our property.
@@TheSaltySunflower yea last one blew some trees down in whitefish! Ruined some boats at Flathead I heard too.
Thank you! I appreciate sharing your awesome story as well. Always great to hear from those who have spent time in these towers! Cheers.
I'm from London, UK, but I've driven through Montana a few times. Love the drive along Hwy 2. Stayed in Kalispell, Bozeman, Billings etc... Beautiful part of America. Not gonna lie, but that storm would have freaked me out. Great vid!
@@spursla1 you got to see quite a bit of the state! Hwy 2 is a beautiful drive for sure!
And the storm was something else but I’m glad I stuck it out. The footage is something I’ll always remember 🙏🏽
US 2 is beautiful all the way across.
Your spot on about eating food while camping, it does taste better out in the wilderness, rather than being at your house. especially steak - n- tators.. coffee as well.🤗
The food really does! Coffee especially on those cold mornings :)
The views from the look out tower are amazing.
They were amazing!
I had no idea that fire lookouts existed, let alone that you could rent them for an overnight. Definitely something I'm going to do. Thank you for sharing!
Def check some of them out! Lots of them to rent and explore.
Cool vlog. The storm, views, the sun coming up, it all was amazing. Peace.

Hi, I live in sweden and love nature❤ always been hiking in deep woods and mountains.
To be part of the nature is to enter another part of our selfe, I belive.
Another way to cook a wonderful stake is to put the stake in a plasticbag, throw in some rosemary, time, fresh garlic, salt ,pepper (pepper with lemonflawor is also greate)
Put in lots of honey, sweet chili sause, and some dark vinegar.
Close the bag and tos it around a bit, so everything blends together.
You can do this at home, the bag needs to be in a frige or coler.
When you arive at you camp-destination the meat is jucy and have lots of flawor😊
The stake can be in the bag for several hours.
When you Cook the stake, you can use the wet ingrediense that are left and you got a delicious gravy😋
Love your video, next time you got that lovely view and there are a thunderstorm coming, put the camera so we can see the lightning . Its facsinating to se.
Best of luck on your youtube-journey👍😊 Li from sweden
@@lijuang8849 thanks for the support all the way over in Sweden! I greatly appreciate the in depth break down and guidance on the steak cooking. I will have to try that method next time and see how it fairs! Always open to trying different approaches or techniques when it comes to cooking :)

I would’ve killed to see some of that storm rolling in
My father-in-law manned a fire tower in Montana in the 1930's.
This just what I need. Pure calmness
Dropping a new one just like this tomorrow ;)
@ sweet
40:40 absolutely beautiful shot here man, love the early morning sky after a nice rainstorm
The morning after was something else that’s for sure!
This was one of the most peaceful and enjoyable videos I've watched in quite some time. Loved every minute of it.
@@Musicismylove888 thank you for the kind words and tuning into this episode! Cheers.
Tent camping in a campground surrounded by people in Yellowstone and the Tetons was still amazing and fun but that setup and view you have here are outrageously beautiful, thanks for sharing this!
Also, for snacks Kettle brand Thai Sweet Chili chips are a must-have!
That’s awesome I was there for a weekend with my wife and kids around 2014. We’ve stayed at most of the fire lookouts and ranger stations in northwest Montana over the years. It’s too bad it’s almost impossible to book one now any time except like one random Tuesday 3 months from now.
Yea I just turned on the alerts and was able to book this one a week prior. Got lucky with a cancellation for a Wednesday evening. Such an awesome experience! Have some others that I want to try and get into next summer.
Wow! This is the first video I've found of yours, what beautiful views and the storm in all its glory.
Greetings from Argentina.
A good first video to land on! Cheers and thanks for the support.
you give firewatch game vibe, amazing content !
Love it haha!
Great point about viewing things in person vs seeing a photo.
Being born and raised, good to see people out enjoying the nature here still. I miss going out every month.

Enjoyed every second . Nothing is more rewarding than the solitude of the great beauty and wilderness of our country. I was blessed to spend Thirty seven days in the West Elk Wilderness in Colorado back in 79 with a horse and mule and didnt have a single contact with a human, it was the best experience of my life aside from marrying my wife. We find our sanctuary now in the Bitteroots. From a new Subscriber, thanks.
Thanks for joining this upload! I lived in Missoula for 2.5 years so I am familiar with the Bitterroots. An amazing area to reside that's for sure!
I love this video! It's the first of your channel that I am viewing. I have been to some truly amazing places and climbed an old crikety tower in my youth. I am 75 now and probably could not climb up to your site so from the bottom of my heart thank you for sharing your beautiful experience! Everything is enhanced and so much more vivid and for me spiritual when you're out in nature. I have been outspoken about it since I was 19 and I am a rather big introvert! I just don't get how some people will trash and destroy our Earth. Please everyone do better. Blessings and keep doing your spectacular photography and adventures!

Just amazing. I would have been in my element up there as I'm obsessed with thunderstorms! I lived in South Carolina as a kid but now live in the UK and the storms are pathetic in comparison. But being born and raised in South Africa means steak is so close to my heart and those you cooked were just devine. Agree on the cast iron too! The scenery and peace up there is incredible. Great video fella and thank you for sharing with us.
A totally different experience being that high up. Was awesome to be able to get to be there!
I can vouch for U.K weather.😂 It is largely a pathetic, constant drizzle of rain or a dull, grey blanket of cloud that lasts for days. I think it can get pretty harsh up in the Scottish Highlands though. I'd love to see some of the extreme weather that you guys get.
I've visited a lot of western states and Montana is a favourite especially round Big Timber and Livingston. Great video not much chat and the landscape speaks for itself. Greetings from the UK.
Thanks for the support! Beautiful are down near Big Timber and Livingston. I've spent quite a bit of time in those areas as well.
That looked so amazing, I could see the light swaying with the wind. Nothing like a night out with your best buddy.
The wind was quite strong for sure! Such an awesome experience though - and having my pup there just made the night that much better.

I have the Good Lords Blessing to live in the North Georgia Mountains. Fort Mountain is one of the most beautiful places to view from atop! Epic fire-tower views is an effing understatement. That right there is a freakin religious experience!!!!

So funny when you brought up goldfish vs cheez-its, I was just eating goldfish at the beginning of the video lol 😅
Haha what are the odds of that!
Dang. This is my dream. My idea of heaven.
It was a blessing to experience 🤟🏽
I had an aunt who worked in ha fire tower in Mississippi many many years ago.
My uncles used to do this job in Canada in the 1930s, along with being trappers, fishing guides, farming, plowing snow and bulldozing new roads.
Must have been wild as all heck back in the 30s. I couldn't even imagine what type of stuff they saw!
Very insightful info on the potatoes! The more you know 😄
Your stay at the fire tower was amazing. I like Cheeze its. I’ve never had goldfish, thought they were mainly for kids. Have a good day.
Thank you so much for the support! Some other folks said the same thing about the goldfish too which I can see why now haha
