Got into this Hobby only about 9 months ago!! Been a Rabbit Hole but a good one!! Could not do it without your videos Trevor!!!
Appreciate that, Rick! Clear skies!
Bruh what is the best one for buying,,,,,I'm beginner but want best ,,doesn't matter how much would ,..,,can you tell
@@jimmyaulakh8247Dobsonian 8 inch telescope is a great beginner, it is quite expensive though; around 700 dollars, amazing views from it man
@@jimmyaulakh8247I’m starting out with a celestron 6se
The transition from the red light on the mount to the core of the whirlpool was so good!
it felt good in the edit
Smoooooooooooth
@@AstroBackyardi think i saw the ISS cause when i used sterrlium the ISS was high in south and i looked up and i saw some bright thing moving east
Galaxy Season can be a bit frustrating for owners of small refractor telescopes. On a clear night, it's often challenging to find suitable targets because everything appears either too small or too dim. I can understand why you opted for the big pipe.
This galaxy season I decided to buy something with more reach. Scared of collimation,, I got the Askar 120 APO triplet.
Can confirm at 70mm f6 :D :(
@mikehardy8247 So you are into triplets huh?
Very inspirational, Travor.
What a beautiful hobby! I have a 14" Dobsonian and 12" SCT....I'm more of a visual observer ...but slowly getting into astrophotography...
Clear skies everybody!
Which one do you use for astrophotography? I know a photographer that has an manual 14" dob and takes amazing planetary images, and I've seen some amazing photos from 12" SCTs. Hope the best for you!
@@joshmccollumastrophotography I took some nice pictures of the lunar surface with the 14" and some decent picture of DSO with the 12" SCT.... I'm just a beginner...I'm learning and it's getting better and better...all I wish right now is more clear night and to get a dedicated astro camera. Right now I'm practicing with a Canon 5D mark III.
I started astrophotography about 3 months ago and i can only say i learned so much from your channel, from setting up a telescope, choosing the right camera, photo proccesing exc. Ofcourse, i still have so much to learn but your channel made me progress much faster, and i kinda started this hobby because of your channel. It was the trigger i needed and i definetely dont regret it. I'd say this channel is best on youtube, for beginners and pro's also. Clear skies !
Galaxy season is here baby!!!
I love my 200mm reflector! From DSLR to dedicated astro cameras, it has always performed, as long as it is colimated and cooled before imaging.
It is totally new to me, that you could really take such images without an observatory. Im blown away to say the least. Great content! As an astronomy geek, you have me almost double dared to get into this hobby myself! Thx for sharing your experiences!
The last processing timelapse with that music track was just *chefs kiss.
WOW what a first image!!
10:50 oh my f*ing God !!!!!!! this is amazing
Have an 8" Orion Astrograph reflector. That scope has given me so many great images! Your vids are an inspiration! Keep it up!
Recently started capturing moon with my small telescope and t3i, your videos are big inspiration to start with whatever available as long as the passion is there. Waiting for many more videos, clear skies!
With a "cheap collimator" make sure it's actually collimated or the telescope won't be either. You can also try using the big Newtonian for planets (with a PowerMate instead of a reducer).
Absolutely beautiful! I've been trying to capture M81 the past few nights myself, and even though my gear can't get me anywhere close to that detail, it's just incredibly enjoyable to sit outside watching the stars and seeing a galaxy appear on the screen that you otherwise can't see. Super excited though, I've finally got a 533MC-P coming my way! : D
Clear skies!
Wow Taylor, amazing, have watched so many of yours and others great videos, but this one with the first 120s exposure of the M51 is mind blowing! Size and aperture both matters! This is like an earth based Hubble 😂
Man space is Soooo beautiful, surly this is our destination
So talented! I tried to shoot M51 before with a reflector telescope. In the end, it came out as a very noisy, unclear image. I tried processing it more, and it got even worse! I might try some time again thanks to this helpful video. Thanks Trevor. Keep the great videos coming!!!
Thank you my friend! Clear skies
@@AstroBackyard Thank you for the reply! I appreciate it.
@@AstroFrontyard He doesnt give a damn of your poor results.
Don't be so salty
Oh my goodness!!! Well done Trevor
I'm still a beginner in astrophotography after getting deep into observing, but I don't need any reason to watch Trevor's videos, even if I'm a beginner and don't have all that equipment. I just find this channel kind of addictive. Just keep it up ❤
So that’s where the Black Dog is! That’s why we haven’t seen it in a long while. Are you going to be using it again?
Hello Trevor.
I'm glad to see a mirrored telescope in this video.
Clear skies.
Wow you make everything seem so easy. Amazing results.
Good to see the clear visibility in the backyard
Trevor this is phenomenal! I recently purchased the 294mc pro and it works wonders with my 10” f/4. Similar image scale too. Your videos over the years have helped me immensely in my astrophotography journey. It was great meeting you at NEAF this year. Keep up the great work!
Hey. A trick that helps me a lot carry mine (granted, it's smaller), add another dovetail to the top of the rings. Then you can use that as a handle. You can also attach the AIR to that dovetail, and being on the top helps balance everything. Really handy and secure way to carry your newt. This setup looks a lot like mine, except my OTA is smaller (and the mount of course). I love that setup, works really nicely but, as you say, it's a pain to carry.
I thought about that! Great idea
YO. That's an absolutely mind-blowing result: both the 120s sub and the final image! 🤯
🔭Trevor, You've Inspired Me to get back into Astronomy Again. City Light Pollution has increased over the years. So my Vintage C-8 wasn't cutting it anymore. So I upgraded to the Celestron CPC 1100 XLT with a ZWO ASI294MC Pro. It will be housed in a 3.5M ObservaDome.
Thanks for all you do for this Fascinating Field.
In Appreciation,
Rick
Happy to hear that, Rick! Clear skies!
Did the mirror weigh more than the tube?
I struggle with these tiny faint things but you owned it! Great image!!!
True. For galaxies you need that aperture. I am very happy with my GSO RC10. Thanks for sharing!
Absolute unit of a telescope. I could tell it was huge based on seeing how tall you are in person and it was still WAY taller than you haha. Final image came out so good! I especially loved the two tiny galaxies (IC4278 & IC4277) below and to the left of M51 - so rad! Fun fact, because I had to look it up: M51 is about ~23 million light years away, but IC4278 (the barred spiral) is about 10x farther away at 230 million light years!
Wow....!!! That final image is INSANE!! 😯🤯😍
Aha, a storage unit!!!! Was wondering where you stashed all your stuff.
That final image is CRAZY.
Utterly amazing images Trevor!
Thank you, Todd!
Once again your editing and music montage is effing on point ! I love the Red Light of the mount blending into the center of the Whirlpool Galaxy !! Your an inspiration !
This is my favorite galaxy and this photo is crazy gg
I have a Dobsonian telescope with a 300mm mirror (about 12 inches) on an EQ platform. Because the polar alignment is never perfect with an EQ platform, I use very short exposures, about 7 seconds. I also photographed M51 last week (Bortle 8 sky). I took 1600 sub-frames, of which only the best 1200 were used. The final image did come out great.
Thanks Trevor. This video was spectacular!!✌️
I used my long focal length 5" refractor for the job
Those SW Quattro telescopes are quite amazing instruments. I got my 10" Quattro a couple of years ago and paired it with the Starizona 0.75x corrector. My APO refractor has been collecting dust since that time 😊😊
I've got a new Newt I'm planning on using for it if weather ever cooperates. Hasn't been a good year for astrophotography in Mississippi at all!
Hope it clears up for ya!
You absolutely inspire me. Last night I got my first ever bodes galaxy image. Stacked and processed it and it looked amaaaaazing!
Nice! I have a vintage Meade 645 f/5 so I'm looking forward to this installment!
This is the best image of the whirlpool galaxy I've ever seen
I watched you put the tube assembly into the car and even said you needed to pick up the mirror. I have one and find it amazing. It runs on the EQ6 and I'm about to get the CQ350 mount to hold it better.
What an inspiring job and how lucky that you can capture galaxies from the patio of your house, here in the patio we don't always have that luck. Greetings from Colombia
YOUR Videos are just outer-worldly, quite literally. THANK YOU!
I appreciate your channel and videos so much, I’ve been looking to get an 8 inch Celestron Dob as my first. Your knowledge has helped me learn and even grew my interest in astronomy!
I have the 200P and the Starizona reducer and that’s a beast. Dread to think what this feels like! Great video as usual and M51, Trevor.
I love watching your videos. I'm really into astrophotography. I don't have any tools so I watch all of these videos. It gives me a sense of ease.
Alright, this just won, my favourite deep sky astrophotography pic I have ever seen. Thank you for this Trevor and Wife.
Great video as always! I've been using my SW 8" 200P and 294mc pro. I've installed some upgrades, like a new focuser and primary, secondary mirror holder and it's been awesome for Galaxy season!
I highly recommend you to use losmandy plate. Dovteil could be a bit unstable for that kind of hugh sope
I'd be afraid someone is going to rob the storage unit now that you showed where it is ...
😢
I'm seriously considering an ONTC 12 inch Newtonian astrograph. I've been on the verge of ordering one twice. Not going to be fun transporting it to dark sites. It's also not going to be fun to mount, but it's a fair bit lighter than the sky watcher.
I've experimented with my 8 inch newt to find ways that might be easy to put a 12 inch newt on my cem120. Putting the deck at 90 degrees and sliding it in that way kind of works. I think I could get good at it. I haven't tried sitting it on a chair and moving the unlocked mount head to the scope yet. I've seen people on line do this with large cats. I've also tried mounting the dovetail with the rings, then putting the telescope in the rings.
I just bought the Stellalyra 8'' RC. Not much dark skies now here far north, so only a couple of hours a night to catch some galaxies or get a bit closer to some nebula targets. A bit more effort with these compared to refractors, but worth it. Taking pictures of M101 as I write this. Lots of northern lights that was beautiful to watch over my roof when I put up the "light bucket", but not that good for imaging conditions.
That looks like a 50 trillion miles wide hurricane! Absolutely amazing!
I recommend the new 6" apertura carbon series scope released not long ago, for anyone who want to try a Newtonian for imaging. Comes with its own coma corrector and small enough to be handled easily. You can get very similar results as well, especially if you give it more subs. Fair warning though: You may not go back to your refractor! :)
Nice one! Please do a video where you go through your PC setup & specs. Many (amateur) astrophotographers are also computer “freaks” and we enjoy looking at powerful PCs that can do some serious raw stacking and aligning :-)
It would be nice to share your storage and backup strategy as well.
Keep up the good work!
The 10 inch makes the 8 look like a toy but still quite easy to handle fully loaded with all gear and mini PC. Can't imagine the 12.. These steel tube reflectors are the best especially if upgraded with solid spider and flocking. Stunning images and hold collimation for many months when locked down. You should seriously consider the OCAL collimation camera. Makes all other tools obsolete. Kinda like a Pole Master vs a polar scope...
Just think about it! That is another Galaxy with it's own Trillions of Stars and among one of those stars their might be life looking back at our Galaxy with their technology...It really puts things into perspective!
I think your vids are great and I've been watching them for years. Great to see your having a go at newts, particularly this one. I'm hoping you do more with this as I'd love to see how get on as they are definitely not refractors (good and bad). I'd love to hear your comments on how you found it compared to your usual scopes. They are great but they can do very different stuff/used differently. Basically I have a 16" f4.5 on a big eq fork mount - full narrowband imaging rig (typ 0.8 arcsec) and I love it but also often hate it. Good luck and hope you enjoy...
What an incredible image!!! You're an inspiration to so many of us!!! Thank you!
5:28 yes, camera at or near the bottom is definitely the best for a newt. That's a lot of weight that you are putting right near or on the center of rotation rather than elsewhere.
5:43 I think people who design coma correctors to have 55 mm back spacing should be forced to do all of their astrophotography from high school football stadiums with all the lights on. I'm guessing that's why you have to use a guide scope rather than an OAG?
I use a baader diamond steel track focuser with my cheap 8 inch newt. The Baader rcci coma corrector lets me fit my filter wheel and OAG in the train.
Great image Trevor. Have you ever thought about getting a scope buggy.[I can’t remember what they actually call them] for your bigger rigs. I built one for a friend several years ago. He said it’s a back saver.
Thank you! I have thought about getting one, yes - they look really handy!
Didn't expect to see a reflector especially that size. Well done!
Looking at the image you got makes me want to see a lot more from that telescope. Wow.
👏awesome
I'm curious why you stacked in Deep Sky Stacker then worked in PI and PS? Does DSS stack better than PixInsight?
That's honestly why I've been partial to Astro Pixel Processor, you just load all your images + calibrations, set what they're for, and it stacks everything for you and does a great job.
I just shot M51 using my EvoGuide 50 as my Main Scope - pretty good results + 2x Barlow and the Starizona FFv3 - 509 mm Focal length. It turned out really good.
That's awesome. I've heard it's a great imaging scope - I want to give it a try!
There’s more to collimating than using a laser collimator. For example you should also check that the secondary is exactly in the center of the tube and at right height in relation to the focuser to ensure that the center reflection enters through the axis of the focuser. A concenter collimation tool can help with that.
And by the way… my neighboring apartment thanks you for the loud bassy music in the end 😅
So timely! I got an 8", f/4 newtonian (mostly as "very portable visual scope") and now of course I want to use it for imaging ;D Plenty of good tips here, such as "camera down"). The pic is outstanding!!
Wow. Amazing how fast that scope is. nice job
That was... insane. 900mm at f/3? I felt your excitement over that first 2m sub.
A huge newt like that belongs in a permanent observatory though. I can't possibly imagine myself hauling that monster in and out every night.
It pleases me to no end to see You stricken with aperture fever.😮
Good job. ( building a 600mm dob here)
I have a feeling your 'reflector era' is gonna have me spending money haha.
Awesome photo bud. We always pick the same targets haha. I’m excited to show you mine, hopefully this weekend provided tonight and tomorrow night remain clear for me to finish RGB.
Other than aperture, we are similar in focal length+speed. I like to run anywhere from 60-90sec exposures on mono for good results, and just put up with storage space after the fact. I’m sure you could get away with the same since yours is faster with bigger aperture.
I want to get a 12" reflector at some point, after my ROR is built. I just bought an ASI2600MC Duo, it eliminates a separate guide scope and camera. Keep up the inspiring videos.
That is amazing shot! Great job Sir!
Amazing sir, we appreciate your work, and patience to create such a wonderful image
Thank you!
Finally! I've been hoping you would do Newtonian for years haha. I bought a $300 coma corrector years ago and still haven't figured out how to use it correctly. If there's any way you could do a video about coma correctors and backspacing I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one that would be in your debt haha 🙏🤞
Loved this video.
Wow!! Wow!! Wow!!! I’m in awe and speechless!
yea my dream telescope !Thank you for this amazing video great job !! Beautiful M51 Thanks!
wow that's a massive telescope, no wonder the result is so nice! question: how do you decide how many exposures you're gonna make? 100 seems a lot, but how much difference would it make to take 90? or 110?
I have the Skywatcher Quattro 200P and it took me 2 years to Automate my end to end workflow for astrophotography. It's a great teacher but an equally stubborn one
Im currently using a Skywatcher 150 PDS which i love!!! I think reflectors are every bit as good as an apo and they cost peanuts in comparison!! Thats a fantastic image of M51, one id be very proud of 👍😎. Oh im moving from Bortle 6 to bortle 3 skies in the next few months. Can't wait to see the difference darker skies make.
With this scope you can do lucky imaging on DSOs astrobiscuit did it but with a smaller scope. The results where insane
Awesome! I love reflectors. Great video. Clear sky’s!
Nice shot man came out great i like to see reflector shots 👌
So jealous of some of the targets you get in the Northern Hemisphere.. I have had 1 go at that one but where I am it never makes it more than about 30 degrees above the horizon. Great shot.
Thank you for explaining the image scale, i now understand why my Skymax 127 images are soft! I have an image scale of 0.81 on my dslr and a scale of 0.51 on my ASI 120mc-s. I feel a couple of new purchases coming soon 🤫
Good reflector very nice!! and eq8 the beast mount!!❤️😉💪🔭🔝
That is an insane scope and what a pic man!!
THAT is a great shot!!!! Way to go Trevor
Hi Trevor! Love the image you got, the detail in it is awesome, and the amount of deep, faint parts of the galaxy that you can see... anyways, I have a few questions.
I'm still on the hunt for buying a newtonian, and from many different forums, I've heard that collimating and getting to work an f/4 newtonian is a big hassle, even compared to f/5. This also includes the coma corrector, which if it is actually good and corrects the full image circle well, is going to be expensive. So my question is, what is your experience with using such a giant, how's the collimation, which is even worse at f/3, did you have any tilt issues? I've heard that at f/4 using a cheap laser collimator doesn't work precisely enough to get the full potential of the telescope's detail. One last question, with the 4/3 sensor camera you used with the nexus 0.75x coma corrector/reducer, how were the stars on the edge of the field, are they well corrected? Thanks in advance.
I love Space
The man I thought was immune to aperture fever falls... Nice image!! 👍👍
Wow that's a nice scope and the photo of M51 turned out nice. I'm wondering if that scope is an astrograph (I.e. is designed solely for astrophotography) or can it be used visually as well?
