    Simply brilliant story telling and great effort which all paid off in the end with that stonkingly good M33 image! So many twists and turns; my heart sank when the mirror was glued to the cell ! I've made that mistake before and the temperature expansion between the glass mirror and metal mirror cell causes astigmatism. Very well done to Rory for getting it fixed and to all involved in making these epic videos happen. Until the next exciting episode!

    • @dan14632
      @dan14632 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Do you think affixing a small primary mirror with something that might allow a little expansion, say heavy duty sticky back velcro would work?

    • @Astrolavista
      @Astrolavista 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@dan14632 Yes that should work; Rory used a similar approach to resolve the issue in his video.

      Well said and thx everyone

    • @justklaas4703
      @justklaas4703 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Yes. An other way of gluing a glass mirror to an aluminium support while still avoiding stress occuring in the glass causing astigmatism, is to have leaf springs in between glass and aluminium support. Just imagine 3 leaf springs (every 120°). Leaf springs bended 90° so it forms a lip that can be glued onto the glass. The other end of the leaf spring can jut be screwed onto the support. This way, since a leaf spring "locks" 2 translations and 1 rotation, using 3 of them at 120° is able to constrain all 6 DOF's (degrees of freedom: 3 translations, 3 rotations) without inducing stress in the mirror.

    • @RockinRobbins13
      @RockinRobbins13 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hey, at least he had the foresight not to use epoxy glue or other glue that couldn't be undone without force that would hurt his mirror. I call that a successful experiment!

    The CTE of aluminum is much higher than glass, but its elastic modulus is similar. That approximately torques the mirror as the aluminum cools differently than the glass due to drastically higher thermal conductivity. Richard Berry recommended a quarter-thick layer of silicone. I use a reserved set of steel skewers.

    Looking closely, you could see more star detail in the observatory's shot, but it's by a very thin margin. I think you did really well with your setup, particularly given the last-minute modifications. I'd definitely be interested in seeing you go back with a larger scope to see if you can close that margin of detail. It'll be tough to travel with a quality scope that size though...at least by plane. Maybe take a boat? Thanks for sharing this journey with us. Really enjoyed it.

    • @SMGJohn
      @SMGJohn 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      He has to get a proper case for it and board it on the plane as fragile and special travel goods, which means it will be handled better and put in a different place on the plane, they deliver it to you personally after the landing, it costs more, but the price of beating a million euro telescope, is well, its priceless.

    I'm sure that with a 14 inch telescope you would have match it probably like 99.5%.... this is quite mind blowing!

    • @RockinRobbins13
      @RockinRobbins13 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A 14 inch telescope would have just a bit less than half the resolution of the professional scope. Think about it. If the professional astronomers could get the same resolution as their $1 million telescope for $10,000 or $15,000 they would have already done it. Aperture is inescapable as the arbiter of resolution unless the steadiness of the atmosphere is terrible. And the laser based adaptive optical systems on some larger scopes can adjust for atmospheric scintillation automatically in real time.
      But imagine this: undebatable spiral structure in galaxies wasn't definitively shown until 1917 with the 100" Hale Telescope on Mount Wilson, California. AstroBiscuit doesn't only get spiral structure, but virtually dissects M33, a more difficult galaxy than M51 that they used in 1917. It is true that Lord Rosse's 72 inch Leviathan showed him spiral structure in M51 in 1845 but he had to sketch what he saw. His findings weren't accepted by the scientific community as definitive. They were very busy debating whether the "spiral nebulae" were inside the Milky Way or external structures.
      AstroBiscuit's photo of M33 is better than any from the 200" telescope on Mount Palomar from the 1960s. Their limitation was very grainy black and white film with a low exposure latitude. Telescope resolution isn't always the only game in play.

    Incredible! It's absolutely mindblowing how such a small telescope can beat the huge observatory beast and even more - its in color! Can't wait for the next iteration of the Betty, the Betty 2.0 - 2 times fatter mirror, 2 times sharper, 4 times coller results ;D

    I know next to nothing about astrophotography. However, the idea that the everyday working guy could build something at home, that is portable enough to take on a plane. Have it come as close as it did to a huge professional observatory is not just beyond impressive, its mind boggling. The photograph you took was just so stunning, i can see why you have the love and passion you have for this. It blows my mind that i was looking at a galaxy 3 million years in the past. WOW! Just simply WOW!!!

    Even Beryllium would have distorted the mirror when glued. Beryllium over ambient temperature ranges expands by a factor of 3.5 *more* than Pyrex and 10X more than quartz. The only solution would have been to observe at the same temperature the glue on the Aluminum set at which might have been quite high given a two part epoxy's chemical reaction.

    Fyi, we mount all our space telescopes with RTV on the kinematic PM mounts which glue to the backplate of the mirror. Any adhesive will have cure shrinkage and will put strain energy into the PM but the RTV flexes enough to keep it very low. This is pretty much a standard used for 50 years on weather satellites, Hubble, Ikonos, Worldvview, etc...

    As a very casual / occasional night sky viewer, this whole concept is a bit mind blowing. I find it interesting that the professional gear isn't using newer cameras. I wonder if upgradeability will change in the future.

    Great video. We were at La Palma this june and spend 4 nights under Roque de los Muchachos. Raquel was our guide at GTC tour, very nice person. Best observing place for sure in Llano de las Animas, dead end road, no lights, no people and the best, no winds.
