  • Tonight we're going to use one of the BIGGEST amateur telescopes money can buy (the C14 HD Edge) to look at a volcano on the moon, clouds on Mars, Ganymede rising from behind Jupiter AND a rare Mars occultation! And we're going to be doing it all from my roof in London!

    I was thinking of some telescope designs (which will almost certainly have been thought of before because they’ve been around so long) but I was thinking of using magnetic levitation to suspend the secondary mirror to prevent spiking from the struts. Also being a telescope you wouldn’t have to worry about moving it to fast and dislodging the mirror.
    I was also thinking of having a V or L shaped telescope to just get rid of the secondary mirror altogether! So the light is directly reflected off of the primary mirror (facing down both ends of the tube) into the eyepiece/camera

    • @eroraf8637
      @eroraf8637 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      There are designs like a Schmidt or Mak that suspend the secondary in a corrector lens. For everything else, maglev just wouldn’t cut it in terms of cost-benefit.
      The bent Newtonian does exist. It’s called a Herschelian. The problem with such off-axis designs is that they are more affected by distortions, and most implementations require an extremely long focal length to keep those distortions acceptably small. It is possible to make a true off-axis Newtonian, but fabrication of off-axis conics in general is much harder than making something azimuthally symmetrical.

    • @mycarolinaskies
      @mycarolinaskies 9 หลายเดือนก่อน
