My cousin had this game. Got the cart for myself a few years ago. Fun fact, it's heavily implied that Karnov is Shantae's father.
Karnov is Chelnov (Atomic Runner)'s brother
6:50 The moment the Golden Idol from Earthbound shows up to ruin your day. Priceless!
I have no idea who Karnov is but I am glad that he is now part of my life.
Just wait until Karnovember on twitch.
9:42 according to Wikipedia, the story of Karnov is: "The game puts the bulging-muscled, fire-breathing, east-Russian, ex-circus strongman hero on a quest through nine different levels to search for the ultimate treasure. However, between him and the treasure are several horrendous monsters."
That's great, ¾ of the story is just a description of Karnov, and the rest is "fight monsters for a treasure." Brilliant.
@@straightupanarg6226 I mean, its originally an arcade game, cant expect a 3 Part Roman Bestseller as Story for that XD
"Several". Yeah. That's a word for it.
So basically... Wario?
@@ZenoDLC yeah, but with less Garlic and less awsome moustache
I remember borrowing this game from a friend in middle school and going on a mad quest to defeat it. I recall it taking so long that all the early game secrets were second nature. That music certainly brings all those memories screaming back...
As far as what other games Karnov has appeared in, he _might_ be in Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, appearing only in silhouette. A variation of his game's theme does play in the background, so it's possible it's him.
Were you trying to do italicized letters for _"might"?_
For TH-cam, you do that with two _ around the words you want italicized, just in case you didn't know.
@@bluelfsuma Ahh, good to know. Thanks for the info!
I've never played this but I can easily imagine myself having no clue what to do, but still playing it anyway.
I don't know how I knew this, but apparently the knowledge that Karnov was Data East's mascot was tucked away deep down in my brain
I will be 47 this July, and yes, I do know Karnov. Loved it as a kid.
You know, after being exposed to Karnov's Revenge so much, it makes sense that there is just a regular Karnov.
The true Karnov experience is playing Bad Dudes so I can beat him up for this difficult game.
I find this game fascinating so far... in the aesthetic, the design (enemies and power ups), and whatever passes for the story.
A few things I observed while watching this video...
1. It's actually faster to jump up the ladders than it is to climb them (yes, you can jump up the ladders in this game.)
2. The boomerang can be used to one-shot certain bosses in the game.
3. The "fire bomb" (the eight-sided pointy thing) is a screen nuke, it kills everything on-screen. However, it will not affect bosses.
4. You can actually defeat the centipede lady on Level 4 before she has a chance to land. While you're flying, get up close to her and go to town. She will not start attacking until she lands.
Just some of the things that I've learned in my playthroughs of Karnov.
I remember one time as a kid, my folks brought me to the video game store and I was allowed to buy ANY two games. I spent forever just looking at boxes, not knowing what to get. I chose... Karnov, and Milon's Secret Castle. Not a great decision, lol.
This was one of my favorites as a kid. Played it for hours with my dad
Also, Karnov is only medium weird as far as Data East games go.
If you want to go FULL weird, check out an arcade game called "Trio The Punch: Never Forget Me..."
THAT game would be a good one for Arcade Week.
it is my pleasure to be old with you, Mr. Professional Jared
Owned this as a kid, and my grandma would play the crap out of it lol i could never figure out the items stuff as a kid though, so i didn't play it a ton, but i watched my grandma all the time
Always makes me happy to see older people enjoying video games that aren't just chess simulators.
Sounds like granny got some skills in video games, including Karnow.
@@PlayerZeroStart what is a chest simulator though lmfao
@@matthewhartshorn5204 chess* my b
Had this game as a kid and even with the instruction book I still didn't get far. lol And I remember him in Fighter's History on SNES as a boss.
My best friend who lived on my street had Karnov. We played the hell out of this game. It makes no sense to us, but we enjoyed it
Man, I remember actually being able to *beat* this game on the NES back in the day. Brutally tough and, if I recall right, with a side order of cryptic hidden stuff to figure out in order to succeed. But wow, the memories!
Also add me to the list of folks saying Crystalis, Faxanadu, and/or The Guardian Legend would be awesome to see Jared take on!
Yes. All of the yes!
Cryptic bullshit in an NES game? Nah.
Also, I second Crystallis.
Also beat Karnov as a kid, had the most disappointing ending of any video game.
+1 from me any of those. Faxandau or Guardian Legend over Crystalis but only cause I feel like those don't get the love Crystalis does. If he does do Crystalis I hope he does the original, I think the one on the switch NES catalog has some changes to how the swords work or something.
Yes! Every one of the would be awesome for a let's play!
Saw a kid play this on a store display unit. Another day when I had a chance to try, the plastic shoebox had Solomon's Key loaded. Don't remember whether I was happy or disappointed.
He's in Bad Dudes, Karnov is the first boss! ..... "I'm Bad!" 😎
As a brit who never had a NES but been around the 90s internet era: I've heard this game so many times from alot of american gamers talk about.
The trick to the golden guys is to just speak the words "klaatu barada nikto."
The Data East game I always think of is Side Pocket because it had voice for the snes version.
A friend had this game in the 80s so I played it enough to get to the third or fourth stage but never beat it.
The game has such an odd flavor with its unpleasant controls and item selection system along with a sonic shitstorm erupting in your ear every time you shoot a fireball, but I remember always wanting to play again and get to the next stage because each was so different from the previous one, filled with surreal monsters as original as they were ridiculous. There was something off about the game in a “fever dream” kind of way, but that’s also the reason why it stood out and was so appealing.
Love Data East, man. those guys were not afraid to make crazy stuff.
H-uh. This was interesting for sure, glad you shared it with us, Jared! I could see a game like this making some sort of pseudo indie comeback though.
It just needs the Shantae/Battletoads treatment. Good hand drawn art, campy, humorous story and behavior, and it will do just fine for people who want more solid platformers/metroidvanias.
I had this as a kid and that death music brought back a ton of memories
I really really like Karnov, had it as a kid and made it to maybe the third or fourth level sometimes. Something about its strange monsters and power ups really captivated my childhood brain.
What a ridiculously catchy theme song. Gonna have to search for some remixes now.
I like the dude's overall vibe too, the animations make me smile uncontrollably.
Karnov had his own game version of a cinematic universe back in the day. Can't wait for the review on the other channel
I played a lot of Karnov, I thought it was pretty cool, but it was SO hard!
Omg DataEast also made B-wings? I loved that game as a kid, if you could somehow play that sometime that'd be such a nostalgia trip for me!
I had this game, but I'm not sure where I got it. I think I traded something for it? Played the shit out of it, beat it eventually. After the last level, it plays the death tune and it says "CONGRATULATIONS!" in white text on a black screen. That's it, that's the whole ending. The sounds from this game are forever buried in my psyche. *SCHWANKSHAMAO*
I have a Week at the Arcades recommendation: Spinmaster/Miracle Adventure. It's a Data East action platformer that's really good!
Holy shit this is the game I have been trying to remember for years. My uncle had this game when I was a wee baby. Thank you for the memories Jared
I will never forget this game! It's game over music actually used to terrify me as a child, and I have no idea why.
Yes I know Karnov! I'm 30!
Please keep playing these old NES titles. The weird one-offs are great, and the longer playthroughs of the good ones are great too!
I'd love to see you play The Guardian Legend, Crystalis, or Faxanadu!
Second Crystallis.
I would watch Jerd play through Faxanadu
Yes I am old. My neighbor had two very odd games in his collection that we were fascinated with, but were so difficult we never got very far in them. One was "Karnov" and the other was "Athena". The music and monsters of "Karnov" still remain in my mind, because they were so distinctive. I remember us chuckling at the names of the monsters as described in the book. The yellow winged creature was called Chicken Bone, for some odd reason. I think the main frustration for us with this game was the odd jumping and falling mechanics. You get so used to the Super Mario games, that when you run into variant controls they just feel wrong. Anyway, thanks so much for the flashback. If you can find a copy of "Athena" or "Ninja Kid" check them out. I remember those being fascinating in their unique and odd monsters.
We had this on our IBM. The sound effects bring back memories of dying. A lot.
I love the floating Yodas in a nest
Very old school and obscure right here. I love it. Keep it up jerd.
Karnov is one of my favorite underrated NES hidden gems
20:00 it's rainng men, and I've never seen Jared so happy.
I remember bashing my head against this game for far too many hours back in the day. Rather clunky, but definitely something I remember enjoying well enough. Amazed (and pleased) to see it acknowledged.
Never knew the existence of this game, and now I can't take that only song out of my head. Cool!
My brother told me about this game he used to play when he was a kid. I never remembered it all though.
But I do remember you saying how much you love King's Quest point and click adventure games!
Damn Diet Starman was really giving it to Karnov. I never played this on actual NES, it seemed good from the very small amount of time I spent emulating it though
I like this game. Its also one of the last decent $10 or under games on the NES for collectors
KARNOV!!!!! WOOT!!!! thats a game no one brings up, its a solid little gem.
So many memories I never knew I had! I had this game, no idea why. My dad got a lot of NES games, rob the robot and gryomite, the gun, the glove. I only beat this game when we got game genie.
As someone who owned Karnov as a kid, and remembers most of the jump secrets, seeing you ditch the first ladder immediately was infuriating!
I watched this video yesterday and i just couldnt get the song out of my head today.
My brother actually had the *Karnov TIGER LCD Hand-held* game in 1988. It used liquid-crystal screen impressions rather than pixels and foreground drawings rather than sprites, and some of the monsters actually looked pretty cool!
It was hard as heck, though; out of the six stages I was the only one who could even reach the fourth....
Karnov and it’s not even Karnovember??? You spoil us Jared!
I did have this as a kid! Never got past the second level but I did like the weird creature design.
this is definitely a childhood game and I never got past the first stage. so that's neat. saw somethin i didn't expect to see today that i never seen. but yeah. Thanks for that opener, i feel old as dirt now.
I had this as a kid. A lot of this looks vaguely familiar, but I don't really remember too much about it.
Karnov is fun and hard! I'm impressed at how far you got!
My dad was a teacher and took it away from a kid in class. He gave to us bc the kid apperently never came back to get it. Lol.
This game ate so many of my quarters at the convenience store a few blocks from my house; never played the NES version, though.
This game and Mighty Bomb Jack are the two I can remember playing and later wondering where the carts were (I think my dad rented them)
I remember getting this one in my Easter basket actually. Played the first level for a day and then never again lol
I love the way karnov kinda spazzes out as he shoots
He's a boss in Bad Dudes Vs. DragonNinja or Bad Dudes as the NES version was called. He's the final boss of Fighter's History, a fighting game that Data East made. And he's in Karnov's Revenge, the sequel to Fighter's History
YES! I grew up with this game and I loved it. Not a lot of people talked about it
yeah, I used to play Karnov at a friends house back in the late 80s.. I liked it back then.. good times
I had Tiger Electronic handheld Karnov as a kid, used to play it now and then when I was lawnsaling with my grandmother. So I suppose I qualify for being old with you!
Still right at the start of this video, and it physically pained me when you just.. left, the ladder behind after using it. You can climb down the base to put it back into your inventory.
I'm old.
I knew it from "How to Win Nintendo Games 4" or one of those, then some fan sites about it like "Hardcore Gaming 101". Never played it.
This was another childhood game for me which I couldn't beat until I was an adult.
If I remember correctly, you can keep the ladder by fully climbing down it, or pressing down when at the bottom. Something like that. I remember that being important.
I have yet to see a single playthrough or lets play of Karnov where the player knows this.
Karnov is one of the game i know but won't replay it after the frustration.
The funniest part is how i was introduced to Karnov, 2 dudes were playing Karnov on the Tiger Electronics and me being 6 years old got curious, they let me play 1 game and i lost in 5 seconds.
I know Karnov!
I am old!
I enjoyed Karnov as a kid, though I wouldn't call it a GREAT game by any stretch of the imagination.
I seem to recall it being fairly easy, though I can't remember if that recollection involves copious use of Game Genie.
I played this game as a kid. Didn't get very far, though. I think you went farther than I ever did.
Also, Karnov was the first level boss in Bad Dudes. Another game I played as a kid.
Hey Jared I know you've played it before since you mentioned it in your top RPGs not made by Square-Enix video, but you previously mentioned that you wanted to give Genesis games more of spotlight and I was wondering if you'd ever consider playing through Phantasy Star IV. It's a shorter RPG with a similar length to Chrono Trigger. It has never been played by any big TH-camrs and its phenomenal music, battle system, graphics and comic-book style story-telling makes a real standout and I think it deserves more attention than it get. Thanks for years of making amazing content!
My dad had a double VCR and he would rip copies of rentals. That VHS tape was one of em!
Thing I've learned the most from watching Jared play retro games- there are so many NES games that are harder than any Dark Souls game.
I'm enjoying watching Jared play these games I never had a chance to play as a kid. Even if the games seem like a total pain in the butt.
KARNOV GREAT.
*KARNOV BEST.*
This might just be me, but, the statue heads that launch fireballs or whatever at you in the second stage remind me a lot of the enemies from the temple stages in Greendog.
Karnov was one of my first nes titles as a kid. I beat it. It was hard. The wings and I think some other items you can use only at a certain time with a sound cue. The ladder the can use then climb back down and take it with you. He was a boss in bad dudes and the fighting game was revenge of karnov lol
11:28 Even in Karnov, there must always be a Litch King
"We need a first boss for Bad Dudes!?; Karnov get in there!!"
I am a bad enough dude to save the President from Ninjas.
But Karnov? My dudeness is not bad enough for that.
How i would describe it: A fat genie that fights mother 3 aliens and muscle mustachio mans."
This is cool. Thanks for doing this.
I played it a bit, but I had no idea what was going on (could barely read at that point), so I wasn't able to look through the manual to see what I was supposed to do. The only reason this game stuck with me at all was just remembering how strangely floaty this dude is.
I have no experience with the game but I had heard of it. I must admit that I lost it when it started raining bearded buff dudes.
You need to make a playthrough of Abobo's Big Adventure
...I definitely watched someone play that at some point but I don't remember at all
@@LexSchilperoord I think the Angry Video Game Nerd played it some time ago.
I remember seeing this game and saying “the first boss from bad dudes has his own game? That’s weird.” I had no idea how weird until playing it.
this game is perfect for anyone who got really frustrated playing Muscle March and yearns for vengeance
Hey Jared. Have you heard of the Emu 3dSen/3dNES?
It projects an artificial 3 dimensional graphic display for NES games. It may be interesting as an excuse to replay old games you still love.
Hi I'm old too! And I remember him in Bad Dudes and Fighters History. And Dance Dance Karnov on Something Awful...That was a strange game.
I did play Karnov when I was a kid, but I didn't really consider it a favorite. For whatever reason, I recall that a relative of mine had it, so I'd only get to play it on weekends when my family went to visit. While I don't remember getting very far, I do remember those orange heads at the start of the second level. That's about it, though.
These kinds of videos take me back to my childhood, usually in a good way, but watching 30 years later, I can see why some games get remembered more than others. I can see why Mega Man survived and Karnov didn't.
I've known about the nes version for forever, but it actually looks like a lot of fun. Really solid.
That fighting game karnov's revenge is insane how stupidly broken he is as a character. It's good to see you play the game because he was kinda the first mascot in videogames.
nice we return to the classic games haha and what a classic i always find this game amusing i consider one of the og rage games
I know Karnov because of the fighting game karnov's revenge by SNK........which I want jerd to play it'll be fun
Probably the most insane fighting game I've ever seen
love the retro games Jared.
Yeah I had this game as a kid too. Only ever got to like the third stage if I remember right
