For as much Jared didn't like Startropics I actually kind of love how the Shaman has become a continuous character in his playthroughs. Almost a shame she doesn't appear in Startropics II if/when he ever decides to give that a shot.

What do you mean he didn't like Startropics? Have you seen his review? He enjoyed it plenty, he just had a lot to criticize about it.

@@PlayerZeroStart I think that opinion was just misconstrued a bit during his let's play, because he was growing frustrated. And rather than take a break for a while like one normally should when feeling frustrated at a game, his job demanded that he keep pushing through that frustration. Causing the frustration to compound upon itself, and become even worse due to not giving himself time to recharge his batteries when needed.

For anyone curious - Paperboy 2 was released 1991/1992 and the first Paper Mario was released in 2000. The "8 years later" joke at the beginning is actually a bit of trivia as well.

"I'm not convinced many people like it or got very far in it though." I'd agree. It's an idea I love; simple but all these crazy things you can have happen. But it's very clunky, angles are poor, and hit boxes are weird. It was a "rent once, never play again" kind of game.

    • @dontmindmeonlysauronchecki5346
      @dontmindmeonlysauronchecki5346 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, except I rented this game probably twelve times. My local gas station had a fairly small selection. Yes, I said "gas station." Remember those days? And that's the story of how Paperboy 2 became one of my favorite titles on the NES.

I had the SNES version of this growing up. It was far from my favorite but it was enjoyable every so often. I think I finished the first week once. The route numbers are passwords for later weeks. You have a max of ten subscribers. Any houses that aren’t subscribers at first will never be, but if you have a perfect delivery day you can regain one subscriber you lost previously.

If you dont miss a subscriber, some of the other houses with sign up. Miss one and that house will cancel. By the look of it, I think you are on the nes version (I may have missed if you had mentioned it) The graphics on the snes version looks a fair bit different and I've seen a few obstacles that are new for me, but also have yet to see some that I'd always be on the watch for

JEPP this is what made us good gamers at the good old days. Nowadays we can google it or watch let´s plays if we cannot get further in a game - when we NES-generation gamers started, most of us had to do it even without nintendo power or club nintendo to look at, because those magazines appeared about the late 80ies to early 90ies so yes, it really was GO IN AND TRY YOURSELF! I don´t know if you´re the same generation, but if, you definitely know about it..

This dumpster fire of a game was a run until you fail game where its also some what grid based and would randomly go tron on you and green lines with black coloring between and your character would pop up so you could use 3D glasses or some crap.
mechanically speaking its almost as bad as Star Tropics (control and hit box wise). I think the levels were random gens and once you accumulated enough points or something you would move on... or it really was go til ya drop I never made it to far so I do not know.

But it was one of those frustrations where after I calmed down I would play it again. The thing about this game is it takes a lot practice and learning to go at a certain pace. With the course selector you can play the same course over and over until you start doing well with it. The goal is to make it a week and then you “win”. I don’t think I ever made it that long but did make it to Friday or Saturday a few times. It has a steep learning curve and I get the frustration of this game. Jerd, I loved Paperboy 2 and clocked over 100 hours on it as a kid! (I got it from a pawn shop and was poor so didn't have other options 😉) never played or saw paperboy 1.
You made some amazing mailbox plays! Especially considering your cartridge is fucked six ways from Sunday 😂 the music is running at half speed and there are so many glitches, I bet your controls are wonky too.
    Some tips for anyone interested:
    - you get new subscribers when you make a perfect run
-you lose subscribers when you damage their property
-you get points when you break windows and otherwise trash non subscriber houses 😂 most of the fun of the game was seeing how many papers I could chuck in a single pass of the gargoyle house with 10 windows!
-the bullseye targets sitting in that grey liquid at the end can only be hit mid jump, when you throw a paper while catching air it throws the paper behind you and homes in on those (also makes it look like a flipping cool drive by 😎)
Thanks for showing this and reigniting some fierce nostalgia! I hope you play it again (with a better cartridge 😲)

I remember playing this back in the day, and hating it. Good to see I'm not alone

Games like Paperboy are like middle school. Might have had bad times, might have had good times. It's perfectly fine to look back and remember, but actually going back is really awkward and weird.

I played the super nintendo version way too much as a kid. The memories are real.

I was hoping this was Super Paperboy. That game was great with a soundtrack that slapped.

I had this on the snes and I loved it. Although that version had a crap ton of more bs going down the side walks

The Super Nintendo versions sound was, for some reason, louder than any other SNES game i have, and scared the 💩 out of me when i started the game up

I'm one of the few people that enjoyed the game. Though I do have to say, that paperboy 2 was more...clunky. The sprites were updated and changed, but the hitboxes were really wonky, mostly because in 2 the range to get a paper into the mailbox is actually really forgiving. But they also made hazards far easier to hit you as well. There are a few obstacles that don't appear in 1 that appear in 2 and you can play as a paper girl, that's kind of it.
I enjoyed the game because it was a challenge kind of game, all about skill and perseverance. Also, while a high score is the goal, there is actually a real end to the game, as you can gain subscribers. The final day you deliver to all the houses, then there's an actual end, though the game loops with a faster speed and more unforgiving obstacles. I've never managed to get past the first day of the second cycle, it's insanity.

I did play paperboy some as a kid. Though all I ever did was try to break all the windows and knock over all the trashcans. It was fun to play for like fifteen minutes, then I wouldn't touch it again for a few months. Never even came close to beating it.

This very much feels like an arcade game and like nearly all arcade games, there's not enough content to really justify playing it for more than 30 minutes at most.

I had Paperboy 2. I put tons of hours into it and managed to beat it. Watching this made me realize that I still remember every house, every obstacle and still possess the muscle memory 30 years later to react properly to all of it. And I'm pretty sure I never liked the game.

I was going to say that at least the skaters are not in this game, they where always the worst enemies in the first game. But then there came the baby carriage.

The arcade cabinet sounded cool. I'm sure it made this hard game soo much 'easier'😉
