amaryllis or hippeastrum - what's the difference

  • The misinformation about these two plants is massive. Generally everything you buy in shops and garden centers is a hippeastrum, the south America originated plant. The naked lily, that some of you may have on your gardens is in fact the real amaryllis, the African plant.
    So here is how to tell the difference between two, by looking at the bulbs and leaves. And hopefully there will be a video with flowers next year

    The smaller bulb appears to be badly affected or even already dead by fungus. The whitish fluff looks like mycelium to my eye.

      Nope, the fluff is actually dried scale, it's typical for amaryllis
