I was given an Amaryllis for Christmas about three years ago. And I was too lazy to open the box and plant it. Weeks later I finally opened the box and found a tiny shrivelled plant - little leaves, little dried up flower, dried out bulb. I felt so guilty I immediately planted it and belatedly nurtured it. Nothing much happened, except a few leaves here and there. But now - EASTER - and I have two lovely blooms. I'm amazed how tough they are.
Thanks Jo for your comment. I just purchased couple of bulbs on clearance at Tractor supply for less than $4.00 each which also had dried up flowers and little leaves. You have given me encouragement that my purchase was not in vain. I love rescuing plants!!
You can plant these in the ground. I put mine in a little flower bed that is right beside a wall on the house. When cold weather comes in it just kinda dies down, but it comes back in the spring. This year it had 4 of the biggest red blooms I've ever seen. This little flower bed is kind of in a frost free zone. I even have strawberry begonia and an airplane plant that spreads like wild fire. I live in northern MS in zone 7.
Last Summer I was lazy and left the amaryllis (in pot) in FULL - all day long- baking Sun. I also neglected to water. So it only got rain water. Result: it bloomed beautifully this Winter. Conclusion : Amaryllis must be quite robust!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had a double white Amaryllis that was supposed to be pink and white stripes and I got it from Walmart of all places. It did extremely well and I ended up with 15 huge blooms.
LAURA! I knew nothing about these and watched your Amaryllis video's 2 weeks ago which made me REALLY want to give them a try. Unknowingly, my neighbor left me an Amaryllis gift at my front door yesterday! Thanks to her AND YOU I am delighted to get started on my first giant Amaryllis bulb!!!!
I planted my bulb out side in the garden and dug it out in October. It had produced really large leaves in a big fan over the summer. The bulb had long rots on it. I shook off all the soil, put it in my cold closet in a paper bag but forgot to get it out until April! It had a bloom bud, I cut off a lot of the roots so it fit in my pot, and a month later, I have several large leaves and six blooms! So beautiful.
An Amaryllis Story: In December 2020 I gave an Amaryllis growing kit to my 87 year old neighbor who was ill and quite home-bound during the pandemic. She was struggling greatly with her health, and I wanted so much for her to be able to watch an Amaryllis grow and bloom in her home to bring some of nature's life and color back to her indoor world. For whatever reason, the Amaryllis bulb I gave my friend grew, but never bloomed. She and I were a bit disappointed, however, good things were to come! Christmas 2020 passed and the months went by, and then in May 2021 my friend made her transition and passed away. I missed her dearly! So when Christmas came again I asked my hubby for an Amaryllis kit to grow in honor of Mary Lu. I put the bulb in the fridge for a month prior to planting it in soil mixed with pearlite. Well, let me tell you, this Amaryllis brought me so much joy! It not only grew two strong stalks, but it gave SEVEN gorgeous, red blooms that catch the light of the sun with incredible vibrancy! Mary Lu clearly had decided, from the other side, to help this Amaryllis out and bless my socks off! Thank you Mary Lu, for the most beautiful Amaryllis I have ever had the pleasure of growing in my home! ❤️ I will remember you always! I hope you are growing all the flowers you want in heaven, and that they are always blooming!
TIP: Cut white styrofoam packaging material to fit the bottom of your pot to help with drainage and keep dirt from exiting drain hole. The when you stake your tall flowering stalks, your stake will hold easily and Firmly in the styrofoam.
my grandma always was watering plants with the black tea. I never understood this, but her plants never had any diseases, and always grew lovely. I am glad i came across your comment,as it reminded me about this. thank you
Received my first Amaryllis as a gift for Valentine's Day. In just a few days it bloomed 6 flowers on one stalk. The second stalk is growing super fast! Two of the flowers began to wither and I was scared to cut them but your videos are super helpful. Thanks.
I live in North AL zone 7. Each fall, I buy an amaryllis kit and enjoy its blooms. First warm days - which can be March - I plant the bulb in the ground. Of course we have cool days and even frost afterwards. I’ve been doing this for years. Each May I’m rewarded with blooms! I was gifted 3 this year. I’m waiting on a warm day to put them in the ground.
Started watering a dried out pot with a old amaryllis bulb in it! It began to push up leaves and now a bulb spike has emerged and has started to stretch for the sky! Can't wait to see the blooms!😅
Everyone said it takes 6 to 8 weeks for these to bloom but I bought a bulb at Walmart and started watering it. It bloomed within 14 days! She's beautiful! Kinda like a peachy red striped one. So beautiful!
What if I want my to use my pots I planted my Walmart bulbs in? The color was wrong on the packing of the bloom & I don't have flower beds, what to do any suggestions?🌻
@@B.Ritchie1974 Thanks for answering, I planted the bulbs in my clay pots & I want to use my clay pots for other plants. I've cut the leaves down to 2 inches. I guess ill get a large pot & replant all my bulbs in it. Will this hurt the bulbs? I've always had flower beds but don't in this home. Around my area clay pots are pretty pricey & I have some house plants I want to repot.🌻
My friend brought me a Redlion bulb and we planted in a pot in October. I did everything as I should do. My plants are under Grow light. The plant shooted up and today - Christmas day I have one flower in full bloom, the other one will bloom tomorrow. There are small ones are coming up! I am so thrilled and plan to take a photo and send it to my friend! Thankyou for your explanation. Excellent and I subscribed to your channel. I am in Ottawa - the coldest city of Canada 🍁 🍁 😊
This was exactly what I needed to learn thank you! I've got two of these in very different life stages but they're doing so well because they're so tolerant and easy to care for. Your pearl one is gorgeous.
Absolutely loved your video!I bought my first amaryllis bulb and it is the deep, dark red. I bought it and planted it ,so it would be ready for Christmas. It bloomed eight big, huge flowers. It was absolutely stunning! It got very tall and ended up tipping over which made me cry! I had set it in a window, and it just thrived there! I pruned it back, and now I am waiting for it to possibly bloom again the stocks are very beautiful green! I’m going to see what it does before I put it into hibernation.
I'm in zone 9, So CA. We have several planted outdoors, and in April, their Normal season, the show is amazing! They get morning sun, southern exposure, for a few hours. I still have my potted favorites so I get Christmas too
I was given 4 pots of these beauties a few years ago and I'm just Now finding the name of this species!!! Mine just started blooming a week ago! They Never Die!!!
I was given this plant in an apartment, and it bloomed so beautifully. Thanks for such a helpful video, I'm excited to try and care for my little bulb and see if it'll keep blooming. I did let it produce all of its seeds though, and gave them to a super avid gardener I know to see if she could maybe produce more buds in a few years.
Here in Louisiana they grow like a weed. I cannot kill them.... for me that’s rare. Lol I received my bulbs from my grandma. Some of my plants are about 15 to 16 years old.
I'm sure they thrive in Louisiana due to the humidity and summer heat. My Mom planted 1 red/white variegated Amaryllis bulb back in 1973 and now a lovely patch of them that come back every year since then. They've survived droughts, 100+ summer temps and not much care until about 2 years back when I started maintaining them. Only water them occasionally and fertilize with epsom salt and coffee grounds once in a while. (Inland Southern California)
I simply allow my amaryllis to dry in late October by removing from the soil and drying in brown paper. Cut the dead foliage off, repot and it blooms reliably EVERY year. Then, when blooms are done, I repot and put outside after last frost as a patio plant. Repeat in October.
@@annadunleavy5872 Until most of the foliage is dry and dead. It takes a few weeks often. But I see others will even cut the GREEN foliage off after a short dormant period and then repot. So it seems to be a bit flexible. What I have done has worked for several years so I think I will just keep doing it!
hi, my son has just snapped the stalk on my amaryliss I'm devastated , she was doing amazing ready to bloom growing every day 😭 I just don't know what to do I've actually stalked her But do I cut an start again , any advice much appreciated I'm so new to plants so have no idea what I'm doing 🤦🏼 thanks
@@leannedickinson7551 This year's flower is likely gone. BUT--if possible just buy another to enjoy for THIS year. The one with the stalk snapped will continue to grow, lots of green foliage. Then in fall of next year give it a dormant time(I wrap in brown paper in late fall oil foliage dies down) and start watering again. It will bloom for you. But yah--this year's flower is likely gone--sorry
From reading the comments, it sounds like these plants are pretty darn sustainable, regardless of zone, or inside or outside. Cool. Got ours end of November, planted, then grew like crazy, with beautiful blooms by January. Going to put in a pot outside with all the other Lillie’s and see what happens this spring.
Planted one outside here in southern Ontario, Canada. Zone 6b. Leaves died in the winter, of course, but the bulb not only survived, it had a baby and 2 came up in the spring :). Also I never do the dormancy thing. It reblooms every November/December without it, just be prepared for a bit of leaf madness, they never stop elongating :)
Nice, I have 2 bulbs of Amaryllis from a ggod swedish freind last Chrismas. Then I hve taken caee these Amaryllis well . Finnally Amaryllis flowers got beautiful flowers again from July to August - summer here in Stockholm - surprised for me too. Now I will begin for to store by your advice 6 weeks before Christmas Season will come. Good explainining! Thank you for your useful video regarding AMARYLLIS! Best Wishes from STOCKHOLM - SWEDEN 😇
First week in September 2020. I have been following this advise from Laura for two years now and I find my Amaryllises come back every years so far. Thank You Laura🌸
Hello Katrina... Exercise is really good for the body and going out for a workout in the morning... But the most important thing is that how do you feel after it?
I have been doing this routine, except I cut off all the greens in early September, clean off the bulbs , and store in paper bags in the basement, starting them again around NOV 1ST. I always get new leaves and I get new flowers about 75% of the time. I don't like the way the leaves look, and in late spring, early summer, hide the pots in spots around my garden. I am in Zone 7, but last year I was surprised to discover one blooming among a bed of ivy. I didn't plant it, but probably threw an anemic looking bulb in the bed. Sometimes nature is a better gardener than me.
Zone 8b here they do well in the ground and they multiply. They'll bloom in spring for weeks and I just follow the same care that you advised. Thanks Laura. Happy New Year!
Pick up one of theses 2 weeks ago at Aldi. Thing is growing like crazy and I’m expecting blooms soon. Been searching around for care instructions because I have never grown one. Thanks for the info it really helps.
This was my first year with Amaryllis. I did great! I bought my stuff from Burpee and all bloomed and did great. When they came I googled and found your video series and followed your instructions. So have to give credit to you- not only do you know your stuff, but you are an easy to follow instructor. You just saved these 3 bulbs and painful death - I was thinking of just cutting it all down foliage and all and expecting them to regrow later. Glad I came here first! THANKS!
I recieved an amaryllis for a gift. How impressive it was watching it grow then bloom, now just these huge stems. Thanks for the info. Looking forward to enjoying it forever and trying the dorminacy period.👍
Had to check your video again on Amaryllises, live in zone 6a and found a surprise in our back area. When we moved in May the area was full of green leaves but nothing happened, they died back and disappeared. Then this weekend the tall stalks appeared and are now blooming, Amaryllises are a peach/pink.
Hello Nichole... Exercise is really good for the body and going out for a workout in the morning... But the most important thing is that how do you feel after it?
I planted mine in the ground in Zone 7 Virginia. It bloomed outside in June. Amaryllis bulbs have gotten smaller and more expensive. At one time I could get great ones from big box stores or Wal-Mart. Now I have to order them from good nurseries -- with one exception: I got a pot of three at COSTCO a couple of months ago. Three bulbs, six bloom stalks, and so far 12 blossoms, with two buds still to mature and bloom. I'll do my best to grow these on and make larger bulbs. My record is two bloom stalks and sixteen blossoms! Great video, thanks!
I’m in north Florida. Zone 9A. Bought a house with these beauties. Didn’t know what sort of lilies they were so I broke up some clusters and planted them around the house. In less than a month I saw flower stalks. Didn’t know the name of the lilies and what they are until I saw the flowers and asked around. I plan to pot some and sell to raise $ to help my disabled daughter. Maybe get her started to earn some cash and do something that makes her happy. I’m sure it will help her depression as well. Thanks for all your very instructive videos. Short and to the point
Once the bloom is over, I re pot them in a very large and deep pot usually 6 to 8 bulb per pot and put them outside like you and feed heavily. I bring them in September and continue to let them grow year round and the bulbs get huge. I have several big pots so I only let one pot go dormant per year and do as you do and the blooms are great.
My bulbs got put in water and I'm afraid they have rotted...I tried to dry them out in a milk crate and paper bag for liner..I have repotted and I pray they survive ..they are 20 years old
First time working with amaryllis. Got one at Walmart end of November or early December for 4 bucks and figured I give it a try. Wish I bought more. Just added water and sun. Each day I seen it grow. It was fast! Within weeks it grew 2 feet with 1 stalk and 5 flowers came early January
I couldn't believe it 😧 I've never grown them before, a Lady in My garden group told Me about them so I rushed out to Walmart and bought a bunch 🤣👍 I love them 😍💐
Just had the 1st bloom of 2 flowers on my amaryllis, a plant which was given to me 5 years ago. It's still in its original small basket and I know there are several new offshoot bulbs. I live in central FL and the plant resides on my pool deck in moderate sun. I am going to repot it and take much better care of it. I can't believe how beautiful the flowers are on it.
I just bought my first amaryllis this year thought how amazing it is that they don’t need water (perfect for someone like me with depression that often forgets) but it just finished flowering and I was thinking oh no how do I keep it growing 😭 this helped so much I now know how to care for my beautiful “gurdy” as I call her 🥰
I am not really good with plants, but I was thrilled with the gift of my Amaryllis for Christmas. Finally finished with the blooming. So, I will see if I can follow your instructions to enjoy the bulb NEXT Christmas. Grateful for your advice.
I live in the Houston Texas area and we had a 100 yr freeze this year of 14 degrees. night and 19 degrees day temps for 3 days. I was concerned about them as I do plant them in the ground with outstanding results and they came up and bloomed gloriously this Spring. They of course don't bloom at Christmas as it is cold here, but I always look for their early display. JFYI.
Hi Brenda - I'm so glad to see a comment posted by someone who grows amaryllis in their landscape! I'm in zone 10 and had no idea amaryllis can grow in our zone, so I'm excited give it a try this year. Do you have yours planted in full sun? I assume since your bulbs are in the ground, you don't put them in a basement to go dormant - is that right, and if so, do they still rebloom for you?
@@elisasoto1531 They are planted in the ground and in full sun. They grow with no dormant period. They rebloom with more blooms from the continued multiplying of the bulbs every year for 3 seasons now. I have a special place in my beds for just Amaryllis adding to it as I find different colors. My husband is just crazy about them. I live in zone 8.
@@brendajernigan7642 Thank you for the info! I'll probably have to put them in an area that gets some afternoon protection during the summer months. The sun is just ridiculous here in S. Fla during that time.
@@brendajernigan7642 You guys (and E. Oregon for that matter) definitely get hammered during the summer with those temps! 😓 Some friends that moved out there made a funny comparison - in Fla, the moment you step outside you feel like you're in a rice cooker... but when a breeze blows during the Tx summer, you feel like you're in a convection oven 😂 I'm more worried about the our solar radiation, tough. I figure if our sun wasn't harmful for amaryllis bulbs, they'd be in everyone's landscape (I don't think I've ever seen them in residential or commercial landscapes). I guess worse case, I can try keeping them as house plants like Laura or just chucking them after they bloom. Here's hoping! 🤞🏼
I’m in south central Texas and mine return year after year in the ground and bloom spring through summer. I mulch that flower bed each spring. My favorite for sure!
Oh wow! I kive in Houston. Mine are in ground and are blooming now (Easter). Do you do anything to get them to bloom into the Summer? Mine are in partly sunny. You?
Wow! I had NO idea.. I have amaryllis in the ground since 2013 in zone 8 and mine bloom at least twice a year and have multiplied to be all over my flower beds!!😊😊 thanks for all this info! Love your channel down here in Fairhope Alabama
My amaryllis (I've had for over 10 yrs) last year bloomed twice, this time last year and again in the summer and I really worried it was it's last swansong, but even though I started it off about a week or 2 later, I'm getting a spike again! Thanks for a great video series, I think I might buy a few more varieties, as the one we have is Apple Blossom
I really enjoyed my Christmas Amaryllis plants over the last 12 weeks. I have three potted bulbs... red, white and pink. The blooms are very stunning... I love them! I have one white bloom left. I am in a zone 5, so I will follow your instructions to take the bulbs outside around mid May and bring back indoors in October. Thank you for sharing!
Hey Laura we live in zone 8, (Coastal SC), all our amaryllis are in the ground and wish u could see them in bloom. We have about 12-15 white, red, candy-stripe flowers and when they all bloom my entire side walk is edged with them...from the front door to the drive-way. Most of them came from my late mom...my wife watches u all the time. I am the back, (Worker), and she is the master! My only place I get to rule is my vegetable garden. Lol 😆...take care...
I'm in zone 9 and leave my bulbs in the ground year round and I get blooms during Christmas and again in June / July. I just have to divide every 2 a 3 years regularly but what a surprise when they bloom a dinner plate size. Aside from the beauty of the blooms is that my yard is the only one in the neighborhood that does not have gophers. I read somewhere that the amaryllis puts out an odor that replies gophers so of course I planted to see if indeed it worked. I'm pleased to say that it does.
how do you divide them to get more ? I got one for Christmas and I really like it. I live in zone 9 so thinking of planting it outside but It might be too much sun/heat
Thanks to your videos I have finally gotten my amaryllis to re-bloom. Thank you. I was hoping you might be able to do a video on what to do with all the babies I have gotten growing out the sides. Should I move them to their own pot? How many years will it take for them to bloom? etc, etc... If you have already done one, please let me know. Thank you again.

I found here in FL what I'll call a will call a wild Amarillo,it always has 4 delicate but beautiful blooms per stalk,it comes back every year without any attention at all,the bulbs look alot like a huge Hershey's Kiss, wonderful show,I just subscribed!!
I made the cages around my amaryllis like you had done in a previous video. While watering today, I noticed my “cages” red twig dogwood branches, are sprouting!
Thank you for this video. I was given a bulb for Christmas and thought huh? But I looked after it and So pleased I got it. It grew so fast (3ft now) in just over a month and a half! Your video will help me look after it after the petals wilt. Just subscribed so I can get some more tips. Got into plants late but love them.
I live in a warm subtropical climate but we can still sometimes get a degree of frost in winter. I leave mine in the pots outside (I got given two) and am just new to growing these! I put newspaper over them if frost is expected or feels like it. It is the moisture on the plants that freeze and the paper stops that!
I lived in Singapore as an Expat for several years, i only see these pops up in the garden shops and nursery during Chinese New Year. I bought a bud today to see if i can get it to bloom. I'm a foliage person, but i'm excited to see if this works for me.
*Beautiful ~ thanks for your help! I don't think I knew that some people don't expect this flower to re-bloom! Mine is entering its third Christmas season,* and this past year, it actually bloomed twice (December-ish 2020 and the spring time 2021). As I reflect on it, my plant's 'dormancy' period was probably be 'ignoring' it on an indoor window ledge (facing the westside of my home that got lots of shade in the spring and summertime), with very infrequent watering. Not sure what effect this makes, but I also don't trim or cut the stalks, which grow all year long. I am now getting ready for it to bloom again ... around THIS Christmastime! Great content!!!♥
I live in a zone 8. My parents has a couple of them in the yard. They are gorgeous when the bloom. They are not in bloom now because they have already bloomed. But if I remember I will take photos and send them to you.
Your one of my Favorite Mega Gardeners. 😍 Yes ,in zone 10a they do well and my babies do great in ground , I have clay soil [ but mixed in a bit of mircle grow soil ]feed them just enough water and they do Great . Some of them suffered last year when we had tons of rain because I have an area by my front door that gets an over flow of water , so they were miserable during 2021 Thanksgiving to Christmas season .
Hello, I have bought amaryllis in the simple pots, they bloomed and now I want to know how I can save them for next Christmas. The problem - I live in the south Florida, it’s going to be very hot on the balcony during the summer time. Thanks
I am in zone 4, so after forcing the bulb inside and in water only, i plant it outside after all danger of frost... it grows all summer long and gets on more leaves... then after the leaves die out, i clean and keep the bulb in the fridge until early November when we start the cycle again... my bulbs become smaller each year, so i do buy new ones on sale just in case...
I have read so many articles/care guides on this but this is probably the best and most informative thing I've come across. 😄 All the articles talk about them blooming during summer and I'm like... But what if it's blooming in December what do I do then? Is "summer care" still valid for summer? 😆 This answered my questions, so thank you. Now I am a little more confident I can actually take care of my amaryllis after it's done blooming, even if it won't necessarily get to bloom next year. It hasn't bloomed yet since I bought it from the store about 10 days ago but I already decided then I wasn't just going to toss it after Christmas, that I would take up the challenge to try to get it to bloom again.
I will sometimes plant mine in the soil outside , that seems to really increase the bulb size ! I pull them first part of September and store them until mid nov or so
I too have the double white as they are my fav. I loved them so much I purchased 12 last year but most didn't come back and none rebloomed this year. I treat them just as you do but only got a few leaves on just a couple but no blooms. Most didn't even get leaves again. I was super disappointed.
I’m in zone 9a, mine are in the ground and multiple like rabbits. I cover them during the very few freezes we ever get and luckily they come back ablaze the next year.
Thanks so much for that detailed explanation of aftercare after flowering! Mine didn't even flower the first year I had it. Only several fronds (leaves). Let it stay dormant for about 6 months and it bloomed beautifully! Deep, dark and vibrant red blooms (4)! Great tips! Will have to check out your other videos! :D
Thank you for the Information, My Red Amaryllis is growing and it has 3 bulbs around her.. So after watching your video I have to clean her roots and do everything in the video, so I could have flowers later on.
Thank you, this will be my second year with the amaryllis plant, have someknew growth, just took her out, looks good, will let you know if she blooms again, appreciate your video, very helpful.
I live in Tampa Fl. The bulb / tubular plants are excellent for this area, or even more south of me. My neighbor and I have these flowers along with other types of bulb / tubular. We NEVER have to pull them out. We leave them in the ground all year, great thing about our area. In the winter months, Dec Jan it can get very cold here some nights. They do fine, in fact this past winter we had some nights around 30 degrees. It did nothing to my plants. They don’t go dormant either, another great thing about my area . I’m adding this comment for those who may live in southern Florida. They are perfectly fine in complete full sun with no shade. Now that right there tells you a lot! We simply cannot grow flowers here, it’s extremely to hot and humid. But bulbs and tubes do awesome. Other flowers can be grown outside between Oct thru April / May. Once May hits, don’t waste your money. It irks me that Lowe’s don’t sell these types of plants. This year they have sold several colors of calla lilies. But they don’t do good in full sun, and are best as a houseplant. But can grow outside. The peace lily I’ve never had good luck with in the hot summer months outside. I’ve been experimenting for 20 years, growing flowers here, this is what I found works! Tomato plants... do NOT wait until March or later to plant. They will die and fast! Even in partial shade. My tomatoes grow wild from my plants from last year. I may buy a couple more from Lowe’s. Buy them in late fall up to Jan, no later than Feb. they won’t live. I’m from Missouri, gardening here is difficult, different and experimental at times. Our fall winter and spring seasons are the time to grow tomatoes. Vegetables just don’t do real good in our summer months, it’s simply to hot and humid. They have to be watered like every couple days, or they die!!
I live in Zone 8 and have two amaryllis bulbs planted in the ground that have survived all year for four years. I do wrap the leaves if we get frozen precip, but otherwise they just do their thing and thrive, requiring very little attention.
Brill information would it be the same for north of England .I had 4 big bulbs given to me in January ,should I plant up now ,allow to flower and leave them in the garage in the summer ,then start them again Sept ? .
mine were outside almost whole year was very soft nice spring and summer now fall full rain and the motherbulb is starting to sprout the pups 5 are just having leaves i do not have a cellar put an inspectionhole in the garage they go in there i'll take them inside when time is there warm and growlights dutch way
I received one as a gift, during shipping one broke off from the stem,so I put it in fertilized water and it did bloom, the remaining one bloomed two flowers.in the winter
I have three. I never give them aftercare. This past spring my oldest had two sets of blooms simultaneously. I just give them water all year long. The bulb on the oldest is 6-8 inches across.
Wjat zone do you live in? I'm in Zone 9, Houston. Mine are in groumd, only bloom in Spring (Easter time) and not again until next year. I have no aftercare either. I just let thrm do their thing. Do yours bloom just at Christmas or twice a year?
You just saved my poor heart. I thought I cut my Mary’s (I named her lol) stalk too soon and almost cried. Also, I was worried about Amy (my other baby) she hasn’t began to grow a new stalk. Of course I’ll keep loving her but now I kno to give her extra love, follow the same sleep routine and try again next year. Thank you🥰💕
I'm a zone 10 so I may put mine outside and see how it does. this is my first time growing these bulbs and I'm loving it. I was surprised by how tall they get...wow
I live in Tampa, I never ever have to dig up bulbs. They get huge. I have a variety of bulb / tubular flowers. They all are perfect for outdoor gardens. I have them in full sun, no shade. Just keep the bulbs in the ground every year, never dig them up. If you transplant you may not get flowers the first year, or you may. My neighbor has so many bulb flowering plants she gave me a bunch. I have one that looks like a lily, but the flower only stays for a few days, not long at all. Next time it blooms I’m going to try to cut them and put in a vase.

My 4 bulbs of amaryllis have been blooming consistently for 20 years.
An Amaryllis Story:
In December 2020 I gave an Amaryllis growing kit to my 87 year old neighbor who was ill and quite home-bound during the pandemic.
Mind bloom and got 12 big flowers in one season I’m so blessed and happy ♥️♥️♥️
TIP:
Cut white styrofoam packaging material to fit the bottom of your pot to
help with drainage and keep dirt from exiting drain hole. The when you stake your tall flowering stalks, your stake will hold easily and
Firmly in the styrofoam.

I found feeding my Amaryllis cold BLACK tea while it is in bloom excellent , it produced eleven blooms in all from January until now !
Really? I'm gonna try it
Wow!
my grandma always was watering plants with the black tea. I never understood this, but her plants never had any diseases, and always grew lovely. I am glad i came across your comment,as it reminded me about this. thank you
Thank you all for this tip I will definitely try it!!
Never heard about this before , but I will definitely try it. Thanks for sharing
The next year for your plant to bloom again it will take a few weeks after it’s be dormant for 8 weeks. I’m trying to memorize this stuff!
@@TheLindadb actually it didn't bloom at all this year. 😔
What if I want my to use my pots I planted my Walmart bulbs in? The color was wrong on the packing of the bloom & I don't have flower beds, what to do any suggestions?🌻
@@ginamaxey9967 you can put the bulb into your own pot. As long as it isn't flowing yet.
So happy to find this video. I got my first one this Christmas and am loving it. All because of you I have these great experiences
Same thing happened to me! I was so sad. Now I know how to take care of it thanks to this video.
I'm in zone 9, So CA. We have several planted outdoors, and in April, their Normal season, the show is amazing! They get morning sun, southern exposure, for a few hours.
I still have my potted favorites so I get Christmas too
I also live in zone 9A and mine are just finished flowering and it is the 2nd week of August. But I still have my Naked Lady lillies in full bloom.
Lol
I received my bulbs from my grandma.
🤯 I want one!!
Im jealous on american weeds, in germany these weeds are cultivated as garden flowers
wow
I simply allow my amaryllis to dry in late October by removing from the soil and drying in brown paper. Cut the dead foliage off, repot and it blooms reliably EVERY year. Then, when blooms are done, I repot and put outside after last frost as a patio plant. Repeat in October.
How long do you allow to dry out before repotting?
@@judyrobinson5044 I have 2 others ☺️ thanks for your help ❤️
Yes, they live in the ground here in Austin, Texas (zone 8). They bloom later than Xmas.
Your videos are really crisp the cinematography is excellent.
I am in zone 8 and did plant my amaryllis outside about three years ago! They did awesome!!
This is the most informative Amaryllis care video out there - thank you!
I guess I missed it HOW LONG DO THEY STAY BLOOMED
We bought our first 2 this year and wow they are awesome. Thank you for video it helped since mine had bloomed.
What do u do with them after blooming in Montana weather? Growing mine now.
Mine are in zone 9A in the ground planted in a shady area and they come back year after year. I do nothing to care for them.
Fr_Francis Hein p
My bulbs got put in water and I'm afraid they have rotted...I tried to dry them out in a milk crate and paper bag for liner..I have repotted and I pray they survive ..they are 20 years old
Do you do the dormancy step at 55 F?
First time working with amaryllis. Got one at Walmart end of November or early December for 4 bucks and figured I give it a try. Wish I bought more. Just added water and sun. Each day I seen it grow. It was fast! Within weeks it grew 2 feet with 1 stalk and 5 flowers came early January
I got 7 from Walmart for $1.49 I love them 😍💐 they are so beautiful 💐 I'm going to plant mine in the ground after their done blooming 😍
that’s an awesome price you got them for! Can’t beat that. I’ll take 10 please lol
I bought mine back in 2016. It only a house plant for a few years. But I will try again this year. Thank you for your knowledge
I just bought my first amaryllis this year thought how amazing it is that they don’t need water (perfect for someone like me with depression that often forgets) but it just finished flowering and I was thinking oh no how do I keep it growing 😭 this helped so much I now know how to care for my beautiful “gurdy” as I call her 🥰
I live in Zone 9 and my amaryllis lives on outdoors. Beautiful!
Thank you! Question: not having a basement, would a closet do for providing dormancy?
The closet isn’t really COOL, but it is the best I have.
Thank you for the informative video! I didn’t get any blooms last year, I will now fallow your care instructions. Please wish me luck😀
@@elisasoto1531 We often get to 1o2 or 104 in the summer, however I do have shade trees, but they hardly cover this area where they are planted.
@@brendajernigan7642 You guys (and E. Oregon for that matter) definitely get hammered during the summer with those temps! 😓 Some friends that moved out there made a funny comparison - in Fla, the moment you step outside you feel like you're in a rice cooker... but when a breeze blows during the Tx summer, you feel like you're in a convection oven 😂
I'm more worried about the our solar radiation, tough.
Thank you for sharing!
do you get them pollinated? by pollinating them the ovaries will make black seeds which when planted will make more amaryllis bulbs.
My amaryllis have frequently rebloomed without any dormancy period, but the flowers come around Easter, rather than at Christmas.
Mine blooms every year in late April to May. It's still outside blooming. I'm in Zone 7b
Mines Blooming now.

Interesting
I found here in FL what I'll call a will call a wild Amarillo,it always has 4 delicate but beautiful blooms per stalk,it comes back every year without any attention at all,the bulbs look alot like a huge Hershey's Kiss, wonderful show,I just subscribed!!
Well I saw this video just in time. I have two that have never bloomed still in the box and I'm going to give it a whirl. Wish me luck!
Stephanie Norizsan yup you do have to take them outta that box.
I’m in zone 7b:8a nc, my amaryllis are planted in the ground and they return every year and multiply at a great rate.
They were transplanted from s.c.
Watching this from the future, in 2021, hey Laura - you have 2 kids now!!!! 😀 ❤😃❤😄❤
I planted one about 6/7 years ago outside (zone 7b) and it blooms every year in late April to May.
I live in a zone 8. My parents has a couple of them in the yard. They are gorgeous when the bloom.
They are not in bloom now because they have already bloomed. But if I remember I will take photos and send them to you.
This is the first year I've purchased Amaryllis and Paperwhite bulbs. Fingers crossed!
Thanks
damn her hair looks AMAZING. (it had to be said)
😄
I thought the same thing! She's a beautiful woman - - -
Thank you so much!! I grow amaryllis for winter in memory of my mom. Now I know I can regrow the bulbs. Thanks again👍👍👍
All the articles talk about them blooming during summer and I'm like... But what if it's blooming in December what do I do then? Is "summer care" still valid for summer? 😆
This answered my questions, so thank you.
I live in zone 8 and always plant them outside in the spring.
Follow the Sun: You gave it really good care!
They will live outside in zone 8B (southern Alabama), the leaves will stay green up until a freeze or 2 usually
I am in zone 8 and mine come back every year around May. (Louisiana)
What should I do if I cut the stems and the leaves off after the plant was done blooming? Thanks, GREAT VIDEOS!
Thank you! I'm in South Florida and it is hard to find plants and flowers that grow well in our zone 11 temperature. I can't wait to try these.
My zone 8 in-ground amaryllis overwinter with no problems!
I live in Zone 8 and have two amaryllis bulbs planted in the ground that have survived all year for four years. I do wrap the leaves if we get frozen precip, but otherwise they just do their thing and thrive, requiring very little attention.
Brill information would it be the same for north of England .I had 4 big bulbs given to me in January ,should I plant up now ,allow to flower and leave them in the garage in the summer ,then start them again Sept ? .
Yes they will survive in 8 I put them in my garden outside and they come back in the spring around Easter
mine were outside almost whole year was very soft nice spring and summer now fall full rain and the motherbulb is starting to sprout the pups 5 are just having leaves i do not have a cellar put an inspectionhole in the garage they go in there i'll take them inside when time is there warm and growlights dutch way
I received one as a gift, during shipping one broke off from the stem,so I put it in fertilized water and it did bloom, the remaining one bloomed two flowers.in the winter
Thanks I needed that advice, I live in the UK & must admit generally I have dumped the bulb but not this time I'm going to try to keep them going x
I kept 2 bulbs going from last year and they both bloomed again in January! Good luck. 🇬🇧
Thank you🥰💕
I can tell you’re a really good person. I need friends like you
When the flower stalks start to appear I put them in paper bags to stretch the stems toward the light or sun.
I'm a zone 10 so I may put mine outside and see how it does. this is my first time growing these bulbs and I'm loving it. I was surprised by how tall they get...wow
Amber Davis zone 10 here too :)
Amber Davis \i grow them in zone 9 outside and they bloom twice a year. Huge dinner plate size.
Thank you for your informative video. Should I fertilize when I bring the plants indoors and put them in dormancy?
Mine did not bloom this year so now what do I do? Thanks for your wonderful info.
