    In my many years (23) as a military aircraft mechanic, our Technical Orders had us use petrolatum jelly to lubricate our o-rings during reassembly. On our $285,000,000.00 aircraft. So...

      That sounds like typical government based reasoning: use 5 cent lubricant on a $5,000 dollar part. I can’t even

      I worked in a textile plant and helped two older gentleman who were much more experienced than I replace O-rings in air jet nozzles. They always had me lubricate the O-rings up in petroleum jelly.
      Another technician who was known to not be so smart told us that it would break the O-rings down. One of the older gentlemen I was working with said that they both had petroleum in them, so why would they destroy them?
      It made sense to me at the time, but then I read something online that talked about "like dissolves like". I read about this a little bit but still didn't completely comprehend it.
      Recently, I was told that you just can't use petroleum jelly on natural rubber O-rings, but you can on synthetic.

      The problem is that "synthetic o-ring" can vary a lot in terms of raw materials. This means it is unlikely to have undergone comprehensive testing with petroleum jelly. For example, the uncommon latex o-ring is extremely sensitive to vaseline contact, just like natural rubber.

      We mention at the 1:18 mark that a silicone or teflon based lubricant should be used. If you need a brand recommendation, try Magic Lube.

    O-ringsare NOT rubber!! They are a POLYMER and vasaline IS safe to use on them!!

    • @Inyopools

      Our standard response, along with the seal manufacturers, is that natural rubber does not fair well against oil resistance and neither does EPDM (ethylene propylene) or Buna (commonly in pump seals). For the simple reason of acting on the side of caution, we always suggest a teflon or silicone based lubricant. You still risk an EPDM o-ring swelling or a Buna seal breaking down when vaseline is applied.

    • @drdrew3

      Go ahead and use Vaseline - you will learn the hard way. Smarter to follow the manufacturer’s research and recommendations which are silicone based lubricants

      No. You’re wrong. Use silicone grease

    • @xylosfurniture
      @xylosfurniture ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drdrew3I thought I could add my bit😊: For automotive rubber orings, there is a special "rubber grease" as well. It is red and very messy so probably not a good idea around pools. If I understand, they are made with castor oil and clay (among other things). I am in Australia where silicone grease is very hard to find.

    • @triedtofail
      @triedtofail หลายเดือนก่อน

      latex is a polymer emulsion in water. companies make o-rings out of latex. latex is damaged by petroleum jelly. your comment is not about pool seals neither is mine, but your generalization is not at all correct.

    I have never seen vaseline destroyed any rubber but if anyone is afraid of petroleum based lubricant u can use lanolin just like vaseline and it is sheep based.

    no way, is vaseline bad for O-rings, Vaseline nice job and good for 100 years, also for your car door rubbers,heat up 50°C and spray with a large syringe and PVC hose / straw between your window and window rubber in the inner door of your car against rust on the underside of the car door. .
