Great project and I love your gearbox design. Looks like the viscosity of the lube is creating a lot of drag. Maybe try a dry PTFE lube. This won’t reduce the noise but will reduce the friction and wear. You can get this type of lube for bike chains.
From what I know petroleum jelly to be. it's too viscous to reduce friction in a gear set. For your applic., consider a clean, dry lube like graphite or silicone.
