- The owner of this aircraft is Tony Phillippi. His company, TPAero, owns both of the only remaining flying examples of the Howard 500.
During the 1950s and '60s, Howard Aero Inc had been remanufacturing military surplus Lockheed Lodestars and Lockheed Venturas for the executive market, but while the Howard 500 bore a strong resemblance to these aircraft, it was a substantially new design, and all 500s had completely new fuselages.
Thumbs Up, a beautiful example of one of Lockheed's great aircraft, I had the privilege of flying twice in Lockheed L18-56 Lodestar N41CW (Converted from a Lockheed Hudson Bomber) Both of my Grandpas worked on these Lockheed Aircraft in good ole Burbank CA.
Nope, almost correct. Dee Howard laid the fuselage from scratch. Used the wing tips, landing gear and engines from PV-1 Ventura and the four bladed props from the old TransAmerican Tri Star. There were only 19 ever built
I have a serial number plate from one of the benches put in these, I had no idea this plane existed untill I found that plate in the middle of the desert
Brilliant! A real rare find!
What a beautiful beast! Hard to beat the sound of the R-2800’s on this magnificent aircraft.
July 16, 2021, 0815 PDT: She just flew over my house (took off KOAK) and disappeared into the low (about 1200') overcast! You can't ignore a pair of radial engines flying overhead!
Like the old song..."Yesterday's Gone"...but so glad one remains!
Great catch!
Love those Lodestars!
Super nice Video mate!
very rare and beautiful plane !
You know the AA pilots on the taxi way were admiring that gorgeous bird!
Thanks for sharing this great video!
LOL looks like the propellers are spinning very slowly xD
Love the sound of those radial engines
Brilliant Aircraft. :o)
There used to be a Howard sitting at the California City Airport (L71) missing its props. This was 3 years ago, maybe? Can't remember the paint scheme though, but I was told it was airworthy at the time.
Very nice footage!
Very Cool Video!!!
first com and it's beautiful plane
When will videographers learn to TURN OFF THE SHUTTER when shooting props or rotors. With the shutter OFF, The camera will shoot at 1/60th sec. No prop strobing will occur.
The strobe looks cool though
Oliqantasflyer To any pilot, the strobe looks distracting. If the props were moving that slowly, I would't takeoff.
Wonderful golden age bird
Bonne prise de vue...
That 737 got in the way
Beautiful old girl!
It's amazing
Nice
