Enjoyed this simple demo. I felt as if I were sitting in the kitchen with her. Thanks for the great instruction and sharing your knowledge! My basil is soaking for a few mins. while I watched your video.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING !!! RAN ACROSS ANOTHER VIDEO SAYING TO PUT THE STEMS IN A JAR... COVER WITH OLIVE OIL AND LET SIT FOR UP TO 2 WEEKS FOR BASIL OLIVE OIL !!! THIS IS MY 1ST PLANT i HAVE TRIED AND IT STARTED TO FLOWER SOOO i WANTED TO SEE HOW TO PRUNE. i WAS JUST REMOVING THE LEAVES AND LEAVING THE STALK AND IT DIDN'T SEEM QUITE RIGHT... NOW I KNOW WHY !!!
Diane Mumm Garden Videos l tried your freezing in ice cubes a few times now l have about two bags sitting in the freezer what a great way to preserve the basil l love it. Thanks again for this great tip.
I Love your Technique of Freezing your herbs, I always use Freezer bags and it produces a Wet End Product. I will try your method this summer . Thank you for sharing! Happy Holiday Weekend!
Great idea, I am going to try that with parsley too. I make soup a lot in the cooler months and really miss my fresh parsley! Just throw a couple" parsley cubes" in the pot, yummy!
I've checked around for the best way to store the many leaves I'm able to take off my sweet basil plants but am not cooking enough to use it all before it will otherwise go bad. I've tried letting it dry on pans on the porch in the sun but that's not going well b/c it's rained in thunderstorms & downpours for the last 2 weeks. Calling for more tonight & tomorrow unless it turns & it doesn't appear as if it's going to turn. This is my best hope for saving what I'm growing. Jimmie Batchelor Yep, she reminds me of one of my aunts, the aunt who taught me how to find & use medicinal herbs for colds, flu, cuts, sick stomach, etc... I finally put another ginger root in a pot. Hubby swore it was dead but it's got 4-5 stubby but hunky growth on the nib ends. It's not shooting thru the soil yet but it's not down for the count - nowhere even close. ;) Diane Mumm (Diane Mumm Garden Videos) thank you so much.
Great idea Diane. My cousin brought us a basil plant not too awful long ago and it's growing to beat the band. We were wondering of a good way to put it up, and now we have it...thanks! A favor please...try not to talk about getting rid of frustration with a FOOT LONG kitchen knife in your hand. The way I aggravate Debbie, she SURE doesn't need any ideas!! LOL! She gets enough right by herself thank you!! LOL! Thanks again Diane. Who'd have ever thought of ice trays?? Have a great day!
I like to mix fresh leaves, mint, jasmine, or rose petals and rosemary in a small muslin sacket and put it between my pillow and pillow case. makes for a calm sleep.
I'm growing some from cuttings from the garden before the frost. My basil is already flowering. Do you know if basil dies after it flowers? Should I cut off the flower?
@@shericet the same way. I roll my basil and shred it instead of full chopping and then add it to the icecube tray then fill with oil and freeze. Then once they are frozen I pop them out and add them to a ziplock bag. They don't freeze 100% solid but they hold up really well.
Thank you! Great tips! Tomorrow I'll be harvesting my basil and freezing them for the winter. I wasn't quite sure what was the best way to freeze, but you answered my questions. There is nothing like fresh basil. Dried just doesn't compare.
@dalecalder2003 , Hi Dale, it was some basil that was grown in my greenhouse ..I have some pesto in the freezer someone gave me.. I cooked some with chicken breasts , good and healthy should do that again..
I would definitely try but make sure to use them within 6 mo or so.. a lot of people do dry them this also works but takes longer to do.. just experiment a little and do what works for you..
Thank you for this video. I chopped mine up to same size as yours, and just placed in a take away tub with lid and froze it. Haven't tried it yet but it looks okay. I've also divided the plant which was shop bought into seperate pots and others into water until they grow roots, and will again re-plant. The original plant had gone woody and high and was flowering. 🌹
Absolutely brilliant! (Does it hurt....being intelligent and good looking?) Thank you! I will be trying this for all of my fragrant herbs (i.e. English thyme, rosemary, mint, Greek oregano etc.)!!! :-D
Wiggles, don't be so angry! You actually focused upon how many time she said "roast" rather than ideas and help this nice lady is giving us. I never have understood people that go on-line just to be mean. I hope you find life to be a better experience in the future, and you treat other people better than you have done here. Diane, I came here to find out what to do with the basil I had to prune, and you have a really great idea. I am going to try it now, as my basil is overtaking my balcony. Thanks so much!
It's really sad when people start the day cranky. I usually get cranky when I've run into too many people who started out cranky. LOL My wife and I both love parsley and dill. Simply could not live without those two herbs. We have been keeping our fresh herbs this way for years. Nothing dried could compare to green ferny dill's flavor when frozen in cubes. It is absolutely fabulous for fresh cucumber salad in the winter. Just melt the cube in a bowl, drain a bit of the water and dump the dill into sliced cukes with a bit of sugar, oil and vinegar. Also great in mashed potatoes!! Parsley too is fabulous in a fresh tomato salad in January with some sweet chopped onion, a little sugar, oil and vinegar. It always tastes like summer.
Tacks Sherbo Hey that sounds good! Can you tell me more about that cucumber salad? I live in Mexico, and we have tons of beautiful produce here so I always like new ideas. I am growing rosemary , dill , basil, and mint. I have an awesome recipe for peas withe orange juice, rosemary and mint. Along with Tomatoes and peppers. I tried doing all this when in Toronto, but the weather often doesnt allow for it, and we had sooo many racoons, that when anything did come to harvest, they ate it. I kind of made it up combining two recipes, I was really surprised. Luckily in a good way. Have had several suprises in the opposite direction when I have tried to tinker with things, but that's the fun of cooking, right?
John Bennett I live in the northeast near the Great Lakes, so we are basically stuck with the waxed imports (from California :) ) in the winter so either have to scrub them to get off the wax & to see if their skin is tender or leathery, and if that doesn't work, peel them. My wife likes to prettify the cukes when she peels them. She drags a fork along the side lengthwise so it scores them somewhat and they look lacy when she slices them into a bowl. The "dressing" is the simplest. Just a couple of tablespoons of vinegar, a couple of teaspoons of sugar, about 4 or 5 tbsps. of oil. (Keep in mind there are only two of us at home now.) She mixes the sugar with the vinegar first to dissolve it, then adds the oil. She either slices sweet onion very thinly or dices it & adds to cukes, adds the "fresh" frozen dill and mixes and lets it sit for a while until the dill releases its flavor. I love the stuff in the winter. The tomatoes can be either slices or somewhat cubed. Same dressing, same onion, but the "fresh" frozen parsley is used instead. Then she chills it until the parsley makes it mark. It really brightens up winter fare. Sometimes she adds thin julienned red sweet pepper to the tomatoes. Talking about those two always makes my stomach growl. LOL
Tacks Sherbo You're making my mouth water with this recipe. I'm going to have my wife make us both a nice salad with this recipe. Thank-You for sharing.
I do the same. If I want dry I cut it up and put it in the microwave at 1 min. at a time til dry. I bet it smells so good in there. When I do my chocolate mint it smells like your in a pepermint patti factory.
Stick with your way of using water. Using olive oil can cause botulism. I didn't quit smoking just so I could die from food poisoning. Can an indoor plant be taken outside for the day and brought in every evening? Mine isn't getting enough sunlight.
Crystal Braddock I suppose that would be fine if you don't mind doing that, but realize if it is not used to lighting it may be a shock on the plant and actually burn the leaves
How many times are you going to tell us you use these cubes on a roast; we counted at least 6-10. We get it already. Funny shit; oh golly I think I will go make a roast. First let me figure how to get them out of the tray; by golly gosh I think I figured it out, good thing you had that on video I might not of got that part. Bye for now.
Have you tried this yet? let me know below.. if you plan to.. thank you for stopping by
Hey! My wife did the same thing! We had Sweet Basil comin' out of our ears from 2011. She throws in cubes for seasoning. The bestest idea!
I grow my basil outdoors this is a great way to have basil in the winter months. Thank you so much!
Thank you for your tips I searched to find a way to save my herbs. Wish I had your roast recipe never used basil for a roast.
Enjoyed this simple demo. I felt as if I were sitting in the kitchen with her. Thanks for the great instruction and sharing your knowledge! My basil is soaking for a few mins. while I watched your video.

Great idea!!
Can you make a video of how to plant basil indoors?
Great idea Diane. Thanks for the tip. I suppose you could do the same with sage, oregano, thyme and the like.
I Always enjoy your videos! "Dicing= getting out frustrations".. made me giggle with you..
I will do this.. It will be great for making home made spaghetti sauce!
Sounds great! good luck, really fast way to preserve them, you can use olive oil as well..
I like to mix fresh leaves, mint, jasmine, or rose petals and rosemary in a small muslin sacket and put it between my pillow and pillow case. makes for a calm sleep.
@gardenmagik , I was hoping it would, thanks for checking on that wasp Melissa..:)
@Backyardhomesteader wonderful you will have to show us some time...
@marthale7 yes it does, thanks for coming by.. :)
I'm doing this today! Thanks for this video!
I'm growing some from cuttings from the garden before the frost. My basil is already flowering. Do you know if basil dies after it flowers? Should I cut off the flower?
I've been wanting to buy some old fashioned stainless steel ice trays!
@MyInspiredCreation , well Jane you do grow unusual plants very well.. never give up you should be able to grow basil. :)
so clear and friendly. thanks.
i do the same thing but i use extra virgin olive oil
How do you do this with olive oil?
@@shericet the same way. I roll my basil and shred it instead of full chopping and then add it to the icecube tray then fill with oil and freeze. Then once they are frozen I pop them out and add them to a ziplock bag. They don't freeze 100% solid but they hold up really well.
@NewEnglandgardening yes cut off the flower unless you want them to seed..
wonderful, you are welcome have fun!
Do you wash the basil first before freezing?
only if it was grown outside..
Thank you for the neat ideas.
I freeze some in vegetable stock and some in extra virgin olive oil.
This is so crazy smart, why didn't I think of it
@dianemummvideos Loved this it was just what we needed. thank you!
Thank you! Great tips! Tomorrow I'll be harvesting my basil and freezing them for the winter. I wasn't quite sure what was the best way to freeze, but you answered my questions. There is nothing like fresh basil. Dried just doesn't compare.

you are welcome..
Wonder if you put a little lemon juice in with the water if that would keep it from going black!!
some use olive oil.. I have done the same..
This is an Awesome way to save them, can you do this with all the Herbs you want to save?
I would give it a try...
I love this, thanks so much!
n 0 bh I'm iud ' ontolo lol 're 5t 4r
@dalecalder2003 , Hi Dale, it was some basil that was grown in my greenhouse ..I have some pesto in the freezer someone gave me.. I cooked some with chicken breasts , good and healthy should do that again..

thanks for sharing your method Lynda..
Nice basil! I don't know what it is, but I'm not very good at growing herbs >.< I think fruit trees is the only thing I can grow... Lol.
yes you can..
I just stick them in a freezer bag and put them in the freezer :)
ok Rosemarie, that works to..
Absolutely brilliant! (Does it hurt....being intelligent and good looking?) Thank you! I will be trying this for all of my fragrant herbs (i.e. English thyme, rosemary, mint, Greek oregano etc.)!!! :-D
how about other herbs?? can you do the same thing?? someone mentioned dehydrating the herbs and putting them in jars or whatever??
I bypass the ice cube step and place my chopped Basil (or any other herbs) directly inside a Ziploc bag. I then can use any quantity I need.

@255sage THANKS Linda!
thank you , glad it helped..:)
@Incredibleisaac2 , now you know what you can do with your basil..
@RandyMarshjs I think it is works great!

@DubandDebs LOL , well just trying to help her out.. hehe, anyway yeah this works really quick and for what I use it on works great..
@lauriegirl2 , absolutely should work just fine Laurie..
I am so doin this :)
thank you Diane for the great video, i will be trying this soon!!!! roast, roast, roast X 100 for all you haters! 👊👃
I prefer to freeze whole leaves. When I need them in pieces I just make a chiffonade.
No need to chop them. I like to preserve the whole leave.
Stick with your way of using water. Using olive oil can cause botulism. I didn't quit smoking just so I could die from food poisoning. Can an indoor plant be taken outside for the day and brought in every evening? Mine isn't getting enough sunlight.

How could it cause botulism when its in the freezer. You can freeze herbs with olive oil and put in freezer, very safe.
How many times are you going to tell us you use these cubes on a roast; we counted at least 6-10. We get it already. Funny shit; oh golly I think I will go make a roast.
