  • A video taken at the Norwich Crown Point Open Day in 1987 around the time of the full electrification of the GE Main Line through to Norwich. There are 03s seen but i think they had all been withdrawn at this point and were awaiting disposal. Well done!
Can you imagine the effort and diversity of an equivalent event at Crown Point today?? All that would be "shown off" now would be the Leased suburban-style Class 745 units pressed into InterCity service!
The 309s are a joy to see and still beat the 321 / 360 & even more so the latest foreign units hands-down.

Yes, i imagine trying to hold an open day now would be an absolute nightmare! The BR ones of old had a nice mix of current stock (both local and visiting) and preserved stock. If BR wanted it there the rail moves was very easy to arrange! Happy days.....

Not only are all the locos and units gone but much of the surroundings have gone too. The power station, the big gas-o-meter, the factory complex from 6 minutes onwards, all non existant now!
This was a really impressive and eclectic lineup of traction, they really went to some lengths to get all that stuff there and put on a good display! That doesn't (and couldn't) happen anymore.

Got to be the best line up I've seen, especially on the EMUs and DMUs, really impressive. Sad most of it's gone now, but epic video, thanks.

    Another great video.
An event like this would not be possible today, the health and safety police would have a field day.
We must have been gifted with better brains back in the day.

We were all BR back then so no real blame game-something went wrong, it was our fault. Investigate the reasons and stop it happening again, now everyone covers their arse and we have an army of bureaucrats to tell us how to wash our hands properly (and a multitude of other useless information!).

Another wonderful video thanks Soi. I'm currently researching "The Great NSE Cascade", the great merry-go-round of EMUs between 1987 and 1997. Anything more you have lurking in your archive from that period will be really appreciated.
One note from the video, the Class 03 (089) looking all forlorn with its Farewell board survives in preservation. So a happy ending for it.

Strangly enough-yes! I have approx 160 hours of UK railways from BR in 85 to the chaos of the present day. As i used to live in London & SE i have a lot from that area but travelled all over the UK on my priv passes so did a lot in North Wales and anywhere else that had loco haulage, filming whatever was around. There are some shots of 309s in the Manchester/Crewe area, 308s i think around Leeds (and an odd shot in Liverpool), 305s around Manchester plus what i caught when south, most of the old EMU classes, 302s, 307s ect.

Wow. I have total respect for you making full use of your Priv Pass. Sadly I used mine up on following the Gunners around the UK.

Funnily enough i have more Norwich/Anglia shots from back in the day. Plenty of real DMU action in the area. I will get it up over time.

What a super array of locos and multiple units! The network today is pretty tedious by comparison. Many thanks for sharing this with us.

What was the provincial blue liveried 1st generation unit in the shed?

It was a class 10 DMU that had been converted to the Eastern Region's General Managers Saloon. It was used by officialdom to travel around the system as required.
