Hi Bryan- Thanks for all of your 100's of videos on the Yamaha FJR1300. I just bought the last brand new 2017 FJR1300ES in metro Atlanta today. Much of the purchase decision was based on your reviews. All cash talks like you said in one of your other videos and I was able to make a sweetheart of a deal off MSRP with the Yamaha dealer. Also, purchased a 2017 Kawasaki Versys 1000 earlier this year (another great review you did on this bike as well when you did the Kawi demo ride). So my stable is full for now. Again, your honest and straight up videos are much appreciated. Ride safe!
I tested both the FJR1300 and the FZ-09 (the FJ-09 was not out yet). Believe it or not, I was more comfortable on the FZ! It was a lot of fun..let me say the first power wheelie was on accident, but only the first! I almost waited for the release of the FJ-09 but did not because of one of the things you mentioned, CHAIN. I personally have had enough of the maintenance, especially like you said, if you are an all weather rider. So, I got the FJR1300. And, again like you noted, it is an awesome rain bike. I got in the heaviest downpour I had ever experienced while in Tennessee on a 2 lane highway with no shoulder or pull-offs so had to keep going. It did wonderfully! On the slow speed maneuvering, I got used to the FJR applying appropriate maneuvering techniques and have found it to actually be kinda fun in those close, slow speed maneuvers but that is me. Lock to lock slow and low turns are no problem. But, yes, it is top heavy, just gotta adjust the technique. No, the FJR is not a sport bike but for those that think it is just for highway touring, it is still tons of fun in the twisties. My sport bike riding buddies down there are actually please with how well it does for being a "moving van". I love it in the Smokies and on the Dragon. I am not a knee dragger any more and neither is it, but I have no problems getting down and grinding my boots and occasionally the peg feelers.. Those who can't enjoy it in the twisties just need to practice practice practice, if that is the kind of riding they want to do. In fact, I just got back from the Dragon and Fontana where we watched the Total Eclipse. That was some much needed lean time! Keep the videos coming, I have referenced your maintenance videos many times for the FJR.
thanks for the effort and the sharing. first time watching your vids. thumbs up. thinking of going from a v-strom 650 to a fjr1300. was going to initially go to the fj09 but after a yamaha demo day, i am really impressed by the fjr (and that was after still really liking my fj-09 ride.) . wanting to go fjr gen2. any thoughts? again, thanks for the share.
I'm on an o9. LOVE it. Abs. Heated grips and analog dash. I actually like the gen 2 cluster better than the 3. No traction control though if that's important to you.
I was considering the FJR for all the reasons you mentioned, but decided against it for all the reasons you like the FZ. I didn't want two bikes, so I found the perfect compromise in the Vstrom 1000... a torquey 500 lbs mileage gobbler with great suspension and handling, and with the reliability and value to match the Yamaha brand. It's not perfect (somewhat ugly) but does everything quite well.
Thank you for the vlog. The old saying is true: the perfect number of bikes is one more than you have in your garage. I find myself in a similar position having an '07 ZX-14. Big, heavy, very powerful, but I just want something smaller and lighter. I previously looked at the FZ-09, but wasn't seriously tempted because prior to '17 it didn't have ABS and TC (which my 14 also does not have). Now that the 2017 FZ-09 has ABS and TC, I am chomping at the bit for one, just wondering how much I am going to miss the torque of the 14. Dilemmas... Very helpful vlog.
Awesome video but I’m planning getting a MT-09 sometime next year; I too is coming from a shaft driven cruiser (Honda shadow) so I know what you mean with maintaining the shaft drive versus a chain; as for lane splitting; trust me bro yes you do it’s a beautiful thing here in California
Hi Bryan, great review/video as usual. I've just moved from an FJR to a Tracer (FJ-09 in the US) and I'd concur with your opinion mostly. Everything in life is a trade off - my Tracer is lighter, more nimble, possibly more fun but at the expense of weather protection, fuel range etc. Still happy with the move after 11 years on my beloved FJR. I don't envy your Florida location for bike riding - not a lot of twisties in sight there! LOL
👀Hey neighbor NPR rider here and you just gotta love these florida drivers,...lol I occasionally ride that same route, and down to the sponge docks as well Next time come back on grand to avoid traffic but then again what’s the fun in that! Lane filtering would be 👍🏾 stay safe!
Good video, as always. Except for the blinker being on for about a year lol Also, I highly recommend a set of TechSpech tank pads, really help with the tank interface.
I have a 2015 FJ-09 and just picked up a 2005 FJR. I'm looking to sell the FJ-09 because we can ride the FJR two up and it is more comfortable. I also have a wr250r. I would be more likely to keep an fz-09, but if I went that way would prefer a gsxs-1000f (this is more fun than the fj-09 to me). I do think the FZ would compliment the FJR, but I'm considering moving to a newer FJR based on how much I like that bike.
5 years later, we have a stunning new 2022 MT-10 SP, first time in the USA,!! 80 FPT, 158HP, 200 pounds lighter than the FJR and loaded with great tech!
Interresting to hear about the wind. On my MT09 I feel a lot of buffeting, over 40 mph without earplug it is very incomfortable. At 65 mph it is a battle to stay upright and over 75 mph it feels like I'm gona be ejected from the bike. I tried 2 different windscreen, no windscreen at all. The best results I have for now is with the original Yamaha windcreen, but I'm still stuck with too much buffeting to really enjoy the ride. I was thinking maybe it has to do with the helmet. I ride other bikes with the same helmet without problem, but with what you said in this video, I'm difitely trying a new helmet! Any suggestion?
I am planning to paint my rims so I have to remove the wheels, calipers and the discs. Do you know what torque to use when putting the bike together afterwards?
I plan on keeping my 2002 Honda 919 even though I'm getting a 2015 FJR Wednesday. Planning to use the 919 for summer riding/short trips/commutes and when I just want to ride solo more aggressively (I have f4i forks, racetech internal for my weight, and F3 rear shock to sort the crappy 919 stock suspension out), and the FJR for longer trips, 2 up riding, and when weather is colder, etc. The 919 is also a very simple bike, not much to it and very easy to work on, no advanced electronics, etc. I plan on keeping both bikes pretty much until something major goes wrong with them, they're both great.... Eventually I'll probably get something like a GSX-R 750 for the track, and V-Rod Night Rod just to have a cool cruiser.
Over the years I’ve had a BSA, Norton and many Hondas. By far my 2015 FZ09 is my absolute favorite. And with fuel injection, I’ll never go back to a carb’ed engine again.
The FJR GOES AROUND 18 wheelers with no turbulence.two on the right one in front the front one moves to right n nothing to it at 85 + the FJR STEERS IT SELF. IF NEVER RIDDEN ONE GIVE IT A TRY IT WILL SHOCK YOU!! Plus it’s a Go Fast too
I have a question and it's going to sound weird and maybe some people know what I'm talking about. I used to ride a cruiser and what I like about the cruiser was I felt like I was part of the bike or rather tucked down "INTO" bike. I also rode full on sport bikes and the feeling I had when riding those was much different. I describe a sportbike feeling as the bike is balancing on a tightrope and I'm on TOP of the bike. My questions is, if I made myself clear lol, is how does the FZ and the FJR feel within that rider + bike dynamic? Do you feel like you are connected to the bike...or just riding on top of it?
You are describing one of the fundamental things that make a cruiser what it is. A very low seat and low center of gravity. Pretty much every other bike goes away from that and yes some like the FJR are very top heavy. The FZ09 is very much a typical naked bike, completely neutral.
i recently got a fz8n, upgraded from the gsx-650f that bike i would comfortably sit at 120km/h not that im on a naked i find myself sitting at 100km/h Win for not speeding! Also boat stands for Break Out Another Thousand ;)
I usually ride a Harley Road King Classic, so when I rode a friends FZ09 it kinda freaked me out. No real weight to it, lots of pep, very little visually or by way of contact to make you feel secure and heaps raucous noise. I felt like I was riding on the back of a pissed off hornet and the only thing that stopped it from losing me was my tight grip on its antenna, so yeah it was kinda cool and it made me appreciate my Harley's heft a little more !
Haha I ride an xsr900 which is basically is the same bike. I took a Harley RK out during a demo day and when I came back, the sales guy said "tons more torque than your Yamaha huh?"....um....no LOL.
thnx for posting a relatively realistic comapro on these two bikes, too often the mags and sites out there won't point out the bikes nuances , actual weight (disappears once the bike starts moving..oft used), and that it's more versatile and capable than it actually is.. I own a monster and an ST4, and have both because they do different things I want well, no escaping that.. a lot of reviewers will state the FJR will give you as much sporting as you want, sort of fan boys or plugs for Yamaha etc etc, as a thnx for lending me the bike, or getting some cash from them to write a positive review.. in reality, the bike is probs to top heavy, to carve a canyon with, I've lost them in the curves on my ST4, but at the same time given up comfort big time..different animals.. The important thing is to try out every sport tourer you can, and see which suites you best, the FJR, is the best if never compared to anything else.. I rode the motoguzzi norge and liked it a lot better than the FJR, faster, better handling, more comfy, but $24,000 msrp hmm.. Test rode the FZ09, didnt find it wheelie prone , even in A mode, it'll come up for sure, just not when I don't want it, found the triple a little odd, down low, like it didn't produce heaps of torque until you got it spinning, where as my monster has an almost electric, linear and unrelenting pull above 4000.. (could be the re mapped the FZ09 demo bike so riders won't destroy it ???), once the Fz got spinning mind you, if got fun real fast, real point and shoot machine, good brakes, great tip in, light n smooth.. blasting out of tight corners on my monster? much easier and faster then the Fz, just due to power delivery.. but.. again, top end she'll kill me.. corner exits are a ducati specialty, and you have to learn to enter corners at higher speeds to take advantage, demands more from you, but greater rewards as a result..does one thing well and demands to be ridden in that fashion, Fz09 far more flexible , doesn't sweat slow traffic, and very east to live with.. dollar for dollar best bike on the market for a naked.. perfect to go out and raise hell on for a few hours.. point is , they all have their strong n weak points, their own dna, feel, etc etc.. ride everything, see what speaks to you before you plop yer cash down , and seek honest reviews like twowheels ...or you may be selling it in a few months..happens all the time...
Almost pulled the trigger on the FZ09 but then I saw the Speed triple...Looks like it might the best triple cylinder bike in terms of suspension, brakes and power. Have you had the chance to ride one or know how reliable triumph bikes are?
Hello, in my opinion the fjr has nothing to do with sport. It is so big and heavy you better forget the sporty part. It is a great tourer. That is it. A Honda VFR is more sport tourer. I had a RSV mille R. Now i own a tourer an fjr i look more a round while i am driving, enjoying the environment. On the mille the sitting position is on you wrist. The only thing is you and your bike. That is what you need on a sportbike. But again. The fjr is a fast journey bike. Keep up the good work like your videos
I just sold my VFR1200 (after 12000 miles) with all the possible upgrades including the ECU flash and I purchased the FJR finally. After my first ride I completely forgot about the VFR like I never owned one. The FJR is more sporty (meaning sporty in comfort lol) in my opinion, bigger tank, more stable etc. The Honda V4 engine was better balanced but had no character.
Ernst B I've often read that the FJR is one the sportiest sport tourers money can buy... if you've ever ridden one or sat on one in person you'd change your mind.
shadetree surgeon I just bought one a month ago and it's ten times better than my VFR1200. I don't even ride my S1000R as much anymore because I have the FJR.
I have to disagree. I am on my 2nd FJR and also own a FZ-10 and the Zero FXS as well as a Honda Grom. I have owned an R6 as well as a CBR 929 way back. I LOVE the torque, feel, and handling of the FJR. It is heavier to be sure but it carries itself incredibly well. I wouldn't recommend going from a star bike to an FJR but it would be a great decision for anyone looking to do distance riding with sport mixed in. The FZ-10 is a wheelie machine but it is also quite brutal on its acceleration curve b comparison. I have not ridden the 9 series yet. I went from an FZ-7 for play straight to the FZ-10. But no matter what I do for a daily fun bike, the FJR will be my favorite bike. It is the most capable, comfortable, all arounder I've ever owned in 35 years of riding.
My 2017 FZ-09 is an absolute rocket! Especially when you get on it in 1st-4th at about 6-7k rpm. I'm only 160lbs though, that probably makes a huge difference particularly for myself. Overall, in all gears, this bike fucking rips. Try doing some hooligan shit in the next video. lol
I'm not claiming its the fastest bike out there by any stretch. The fun zone is in the torque. I just youtubed an FZ taking a CBR1000. While Crusing around in midrange it's going to take someone special to put me in his mirror
Mike same bike, same weight, same experience. It's all the power id ever really want for the street. Hangs with liter bikes right up till about 120. I don't feel a need to go faster than that anyways.
All right, so I’m really late to the party, but I came across your vid researching the MT-09 and MT-10. And I honestly didn’t watch the vid all the way through because, based on others reviews, the MT-09 is supposed to be so super great and it seemed like you were just hating on it. So I spend two hours on a high speed jaunt through the Texas Hill country on the FJR on the way to test ride the MT-09. Then I ride the MT-09. Yeah...it SUCKED. Hyper naked super sport, huh? No so much. Uber disappointing. The total end result was I fell back in love with the FJR, really want to sixth gear and hope the MT-10 doesn’t result in the same empty feeling. Just sayin....
+1 on hating chain maintenance.
I love my FJR shaft drive.

you mention the right helmet, what is your recommendation?

I like how you use them. The fz for around town type riding. Fjr for touring and such type riding.
I need that more forward lean of the FJR or else my back starts hurting at the midpoint.
Did you ditch the bar-end mirrors ?
Different bikes, but I hate chain maintenance.

TwoWheelObsession Thanks for the response. This spring I will be test riding the FJR ...I guess will see how it rides.
Thanks again!
How'd you do against that Mustang?
How about showing us what the bike looks like?
i recently got a fz8n, upgraded from the gsx-650f that bike i would comfortably sit at 120km/h not that im on a naked i find myself sitting at 100km/h Win for not speeding!

Looking forward to your Tracer GT review...
Me too, I want to see if I can feel the longer swing arm, as a possible update to my fz.
Apples and oranges as they say. When I switched between my Goldwing and BMW r1200r totally different. Sold the wing now need a new touring bike.

It is head and shoulders above the FZ 09. You can't compare the two. Ride safe :)
Try to put on a Nitron or a Ohlins rear shock and it will make the bike much better for fast riding and trackdays. It will be much more planted.
If I did that kind of riding I would lol - no options around here.
I have a 2016 FJR I love it. Make it weigh 100 pounds less and give it a ZX14R motor then its perfect.

My 2017 FZ-09 is an absolute rocket! Especially when you get on it in 1st-4th at about 6-7k rpm. I'm only 160lbs though, that probably makes a huge difference particularly for myself. Overall, in all gears, this bike fucking rips. Try doing some hooligan shit in the next video. lol
LOL if you think it's a rocket, you haven't ridden truly fast bikes ;) It's a LOT of fun that's for sure!
You had to smoke the mustang. Looked like it anyways.
hmmmm lol
