FJR1300 Crash Damage Repair Of Common Parts

  • There are typical damage spots for a Yamaha FJR1300 when you crash or drop it like I did. Of course every situation will be different, but this covers some of the very common points. The windscreen, mirror, saddlebag, barend and the Stator cover will be coming in a separate video since that is done for other reasons as well and I didn't want people to have to sit through a chunk of video they didn't need.

    Brian.. I saw your Blue Ridge trip which started me on your channel. That trip prepared me so much for long trips. This past spring I traded in a Vstar 950 for an new 2016 FJR. Best decision I ever made. The very first thing I did was put on Canyon Cages so I would't do the same thing you did. This past August we took a trip to cover all the great roads in the mountain area. One of the trips was going several miles from Cherokee up the Blue Ridge Parkway. On the way back my son decided to stop and take a picture at a pull-off. He was in front and braked hard but missed the first entry. So we were going slow to the second entry which was a hard right. He mis-judged the turn and stopped to keep from going over the curb. Being slow and hard over right I lost all momentum and did the exact same thing you did. BUT.... The cages performed perfectly and only got a small scratch on the back cage protecting the luggage. So needless to say, I think you saved me over $600 in repairs plus the cages paid for themselves. I owe you a couple of beers if we ever meet. Keep creating the great videos.

    I thought just fixing it all and quick spray would be good enough but doing it properly makes it look like new again.
    Good luck mate.

    Bryan, I dropped my FJR doing the same thing, turning on a slope! I was so pissed at myself! I am built like you and I could not hold up the weight of the bike. Bam, down we went.
    I had frame sliders and bag cages attached.
    My bags were not damaged, but my left mirror took the brunt of the fall. Some minor fairing scratches I could live with, but he mirror had to be replaced. Lesson well learned!

      @TwoWheelObsession  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Shawn Kuse So I had no sliders and no fairing damage, you had sliders and had fairing damage - so much for all those telling me I should have had sliders ;) I know that pissed feeling lol!

    Brian. Awesome videos. I have learned much from your 'repairs.' My FJR is a 2013. I replaced the upper fairing from rock off of a truck damage, lower right fairing, mirror, and right side hard case (cover only). The hard case covers are easy. 4 metric pop rivets, which I ordered from Yamaha as I couldn't find them here in Seattle. It is an easy change.

    • @TwoWheelObsession
      @TwoWheelObsession  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a little more expensive for yours, but it was less than an $80 difference for mine, getting the lid and rivets vs just a whole new unit ready to go. Not worth it to me considering the hinges also take a slight hit.

    • @thorbo
      @thorbo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand. I was thinking of buying the whole side case, yet I had a green moment. Carbon footprint, etc. That is really weird coming from a guy born and raised in New Jersey. :)

    I was thinking about all the various parts you just replaced, but think it would be interesting to keep a running list of the various items, costs and vendors over the years. again thank you for sharing your experience. ..I'm loving my 2015 FJR bought in August and your videos are very informative.

    @TwoWheelObsession, you say in the video that installing sliders would not help prevent damage. Are you talking about that accessory you can buy from Yamaha? I installed T-rex racing protection on my FJR from 2013 last week (live in Sweden, Europe). I did a test and dropped it to the ground. No damage what so ever on the bike, maybe some on the protection (engine and luggage covers) and if any, it is easy to fix with some black paint. I think the best protection you can buy right now is from T-rex or Canyon cages from MC enterprises, why not buy and add a video where you install them? Do not have your email but I can send picture to you if you want on my install. Only downside on the T-rex I can think of is some worse foot room for passagers when using luggage protection. Also I think they integrate well with the look of the bike so no big problem when it comes to looks either. They cost about 200 dollars so not much, and then you do not have to worry about this happening again in the future.

    I’ve been rear ended on my Fjr 1300. I’m saw . I had all my gears on .. Tail lights , license plate light, mud flap and the rear fairing or mount that houses on that is cracked . How can you replace all that . Can you do a video on it?

    I am in the midst of reassembling the left mirror of my FJR. And I am stuck. When I reassemble the mirror as shown in the video, the underside of the mirror scrapes the upperside of the part with he big washer on it. Shouldn't there be small bearing balls in the pits of the biggest washer? If so, how big should they be, how much and where?

    I like your videos but man... if you use your bike, even because of the gravel or something like that your bike is always going to have some small stetic issues.
    If the parts aren't damaged i would just repaint them and i would save that money. You never know when you're going to fall again and you're just wasting it.
    Otherwise nice explanation on how to install all the parts.

    "Only USD530 for the pannier"... that's almost ZAR8,000 in South African terms, or approximately 670 liters of petrol (gas)! In the 80s I repaired the panniers on my GL500 Silver Wing, they looked as good as new. The Silver Wing was incredibly top heavy, once it tipped past a certain point there was no holding it. Send the pannier my way, I'll fix it. :)

    Sounds like the normal insurance deal, they hand out the umbrellas & take them back when it looks like rain. Brian, you should do a video on insurance. I took fully comprehensive insurance no deductible no insurance hike if I have a claim, the price difference was $100 per year. That's in France, it might be different in the States.

Now,let me show and the rest of the guys ,how to make a u turn like the one you tried.well,what you have to do is make a u turn in reverse ,that way you dont deal with the wieght of the bike,it Goes by it self,so you only have to deal with the direcciones of the bike,it will put you in front of the road automaticly.try and let me know.thanks again for your videos!

    • @TwoWheelObsession
      @TwoWheelObsession  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to go through insurance and make a claim you take it to a dealer for an estimate. You pay the deductible and get it fixed, then your rates go up. This wasn’t that expensive so I just paid cash and did it myself so no change.

    Just seen your video, maybe in the future if anything similar for the plastics and it looks cosmetically ok, use plastex to repair it, quite simple to do and ends up been stronger than the original plastic (th-cam.com/video/oZHP6fE-BNU/w-d-xo.html), I've used it for about 5 years now and its fixed a lot of the plastics i get when rebuilding a bike.
    Been watching your videos for a while on info about the FJR1300 as seriously considering getting one some day, keep up the good work.

    You just need to learn how to "weld" plastic using PVC pipe cement, which will "melt" a broken piece to it's source, stronger than original... Works great and a lot cheaper than new parts, especially if you have a vintage bike where the parts are not available...😁

    • @sailasub
      @sailasub 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      On my Honda Silverwing scooter I used ABS cement to repair broken tabs.. Ugly but great for underside repairs of tabs an other mount points that are not visible. A lot of bike plastic is ABS. You want the ABS only cement if possible.
