I considered both those bikes when I was looking to buy a new bike, and I tested both. In my opinion, if you care more about long distance touring, then the FJR, no question! If you want a bike for mostly urban riding and light touring, then get the FJ09 since it's much cheaper. I ended up splitting the difference myself and bought the Suzuki Vstrom 1000. The Vstrom has all the touring capabilities of the FJR (except cruise), and is still only about 500 lbs, so it's still very nimble and fun. The Vstrom has high-end suspension, and I find it to have an even better ride than the FJR. It's priced right in the middle of the two Yamahas, but I ended up getting a great deal, so I paid even less than it would have cost for an FJ09... plus I got the hard panniers included.

Another consideration. The upcoming Tracer 900 GT. It fixes a lot of the complaints about the FJ-09 and adds cruise, heated grips, standard bags, and a quick shifter for about the price of a Versys 1000.

Fjr all the way. I've had my '14 for 2 years and have gone on four multiple day trips of 1100 to 5200 miles. This bike is so amazing and has you covered no matter the road or weather.

I've had my fj-09 4 years and really considering the fjr-1300, but it's 100lbs heavier. I'm happy with my fj-09 and it seems to be a good "do everything" bike. I'm not sure the fjr would be so great for commutes or short trips. Right now, it seems like nobody has an fjr in stock. Ideally, I'd like to have both, but that's not realistic for me.

I have a Yamaha fjr1300es now actually. I purchased a 2016 in February of 2020. I absolutely love it. Its great for short trips and long trips. Also great for riding to work. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment.

I went through the same thing last year. Bought a new 15 in 16 for the lower price. Added Yamaha bags all around, new wind screen, comfort seat, crash bars and a tank bag to the tune of around 2K. Fun bike for short touring, but I knew almost instantly that I had made a mistake. For a more mature rider shall we say, the lack of comfort on the FJ-09, even with a new seat, is wearing me out. Im going FJR shopping in the spring. lesson learned.

Agree with Cave Troll. The plans you have and listening to the options. Sounds like the Fjr. Hard decision. I totally planned on a new bike in 2017 but still can't make up my mind. Don't want to rush it and buy one and then think I should have went another way.

MotoMattMan yeah I do like the fjr better than the fj09 for what I need the motorcycle to do for me but it's at least 5k more at the full price

From the break down you are making of the two bikes the fjr is going to be more for you. Since you want to do more longer stuff and the fjr already has the stuff but it really will depened on how you feel on the bike.

Don't know if you plan on keeping the smaller bike but if you do obviously get the bigger bike and now you have the best of both worlds. I demoed each one of those bikes six or seven times each and decided to go with the bigger bike.. Man I'm glad I did. I can do 14 hour days 5 to 600 miles and can't wait to get back on the bike and do it again the next day plus all of Comfort you were talking about. It can be a handful in the REALLY tight twisties but other than that it is All good. Good luck

I’m about to trade my 2016 FJ09 to an FJR1300. I’ve done all the mods needed to include: exhaust, heated grips, givi Top case, ecu flash, windscreen, KTM handguards, Frame sliders and case sliders, rizoma handle bars and some. At the end of the day it vibrates hard and runs out of breath above a 100. The FJR is a different class in comparison. I ride all year and I put 15k in one year on my FJ09 along with two other bikes. I think you should look into a slightly used 2016 to get the best bang for the buck. Good luck brother!

good topic Marshall 3498, i too am on the fence w/ an FJ-09, but my dilemma is rather between the FJ-09 and its cousin, the XSR-900. I'm wondering how often i'll actually be touring, and thinking it will ultimately (for me) be a commuting and occasional interstate motorcycle. It's my only transport so practicality also suggests the FJ .. hopefully my decision by spring 2018 also ~ Thanks Marshall 3498~!

manseated I would go with the fj09 if I were you cause of some wind protection for interstate and rain

It depends on the type of riding you like too. Ive ridden both but own the FJ09. I enjoy the twisties once in a while, taking the turns aggressively and bringing the wheel up out of a turn (with traction control off). Practicality wise, you cant really do that with an FJR. Well maybe, but compared to the FJ09..... The FJ09 is not an R1 but you can attack the twisties aggressively and lean the bike quickly. My gripe about the bike is the fuel capacity/range (170-180mi), considering touring, but I'm comparing it to my other bike the Kawasaki Versys 650 (300+mi). The new FJ09 has a slipper clutch making the lever pull really light. Does anyone know if the FJR has a slipper clutch or better hydrolic clutch assist? Anyhow, jokingly...Isnt the FJR an "old mans" bike?? Well we all get old one of these days. My crew and I rode to Reno Nevada recently and one guy had the FJR. He can pull away from me slowly at full acceleration, but when we are already going 50mph+. Off the line, I jump out ahead every time. Seemed like I was always filling the gas tank up just in case, wish it had another 1.5gallons.

hawaiinnative well I really want a more touring capable motorcycle so the fjr is for me I but it's kinda a old mans bike yes but it's not a goldwing at all
