I feel like so few songs actually address the abuser the way this one does. The anger. The way they shame him for how he treats her in the line “do you feel like a man when you push her around? Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?” And finally the catharsis of “Face down in the dirt, she says this doesn’t hurt. She says I finally had enough!” It gets me every time. Thank you so much for covering this. You’re both absolutely amazing!
It makes sense given that the singer was describing the relationship between his mother and father, hence the lack of romance to the song. Just sheer, utter righteous bitterness at the memory of the abuse and the promise of her eventually overcoming it
Yeah, the "I would treat her better" vibes of so many songs really annoys me. Like it's good to be condemning abuse, but the motivation shouldn't be your own gain. The number one concern should be helping the victim, even if attraction motivates you, don't let that be what openly drives you.

I got into a really toxic relationship at 16 that was basically us mutually coping with the fallout from the same abuser; my ex stripped me of what little worth I had left and made me feel like I was nothing more than an object. We somehow lasted 6 years, and at 25, this song absolutely destroys me.
