u should watch tho, he's really good at teaching and who knows even if u're a pro already it's good to look back on how other pros tackle on challenges such as this one
You speak a very clear and understandable English even for French people! Thanks a lot. Then, for me, it's two lessons in one bass and English. Make me improve a lot. Merci beaucoup!
Thank you for all you do MARK, I’m 45 and have been a drummer all my life, recently in the past year and a half. I’ve switched to base, while still actively playing drums lol, being blind it is hard to find someone that can explain things correctly For me to understand them without being able to see videos and things like that it makes it a challenge, you’ve made it very easy and I’ve gone from a beginner bass player to being able to play intermediate level and some advanced level stuff, double thumbing, and things like that, trying to do absolutely everything with my thumb now, is a challenge, I signed up for the talking bass course but something got screwed up with the email so I guess my account is floating around in limbo anyway keep on doing what you do and thanks for making it so easy to understand, you’ve got a natural gift and thank you for sharing it
Literally your my new bass teAcher u made notes understandable for me now I can find them anywhere on the neck thankyou seriously mean that I plan on learning all my scales from u
ii accidentally came across your vids whilst on lockdown, I used to play bass back in the 80's/90's and what I see that is available today is amazing, I wish I had it back then I could have honed my slap skills watching your vids, as it is I had to watch vhs videos of Mark King and pause it to try and see what he is doing!there are all the answers to my questions from back then, here on your vid lessons, thank you for inspiring me to at least reminisce, sadly I have sold all my bass gear, Warwick bass, peavey megabass rig, oh I miss it sooo much.keep up the good work, cheers.
I actually found this technique by myself before! It's cool to finally see how to do it in different ways! I've been praticing it with a clicktrack and I can get it pretty fast now due to this video. Thanks Mark!
i could've sworn this is one of two robert trujillo bass fill/solos from send me your money - suicidal tendencies. "Now give me some bass . Yeah, that was funky"
every month or so I keep coming back to this video... learn the lick... practice, build up speed, come back and check.... nope... not ready yet... keep practicing.... soon :P
Dude, thanx mate, you are really opening my eyes here. I am struggling with this slap and pluck bass thing. I just got back to playing bass late last year. I had some bad habits, never learned that thumb fist thing really. I played with my thumb but always did the pop with my thumb as well so that bouncy thing comes in well but the pluck is fudging me up. Thanks so much for the vids:)
If u can add double slaps and triplets on that lick it would be more funky, i didnt try it yet but i m working on it :D , by the way can u make lessons about harmonic notes to play Portrait of Tracy?
You are a fantastic bass player, you explain and communicate your techniques on your videos perfectly, and you seem like such a very humble gentleman!!!!!....Thank you for teaching and keep up what your doing and IGNORE ANY NASTY OR NEGATIVE REMARKS..lol...
Have or could you make a lesson on combining doublethump 'strumming' together with normal slapping. (Like Flea style and/or the Miller style that you use) AND with the doublethump also incorporate sliding.? If you know what I mean? :)
PUREpopcornskage42 check out Marks website - www.talkingbass.net/ Go to Lesson Map then Slapping , get your double thumping there , its helped me a lot over the past year. Also check out Songs and Repertoire and everything listed there . Most excellent website for bassist from Mark.
Ultimate tip: learn to play so fast that all the notes last for a completely minimal amount of time and therefore you don't even need to learn the theory and can play whichever notes you want because they're unrecognizable
I'm using a five string bass too. Whenever I play slapping licks, the low b always makes a humming noise and it bothers me so much. How do you prevent the unwanted sound from low b string when you play slapping on your five string bass?
+Jinwoong Kim - - How did you do with your practicing of this please? I'm just curious if the sound coming from my 4-Stringer is primarily due to fret rubbing. Thanks!
Yes it does. That's why I say it in the vid. But this style and technique is obviously not just limited to victor wooten. It's a very popular type of lick.
I'm headed toward my bass to try this out . Nice bass Mark ,,, amazing pickups and nice body style and color . My fingers itch wanting to play that fine bass. It looks so solid and bad as can be.
+TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons - - Blimey you combined a Rifle & a King to come up with a kick arse Bass Guitar. You Brit's are brilliant! (You know I mean that with the utmost respect, right?)
sounds like a bass guitar being slapped. sorry...couldn't help posting a stupidly obvious comment like True Kings. great vids by the way but your funky disco grooves do sound a little bit 1978! ;) oops...There I go again
"Slap the open A string"
So far so good. That's enough for today.
*clicks video*
*waits for few seconds*
*mark plays the lick*
*closes the video*
u should watch tho, he's really good at teaching and who knows even if u're a pro already it's good to look back on how other pros tackle on challenges such as this one
You are truly the best teacher on youtube, i love your long lesson style instead of just a 'quick riff'
Still the best teacher
Met Mark at the London Bass Guitar Show, he's a top fella....thanks for sharing these lessons...keep 'em coming
You speak a very clear and understandable English even for French people! Thanks a lot. Then, for me, it's two lessons in one bass and English. Make me improve a lot. Merci beaucoup!
A proper northern english accent. :)
I pretty much just watched him play the lick then went to bed.
... "just hammer on the D"

I've always wondered how Victor Wooten had played so fast. I will definitely be using this technique in any new songs i want to make.
Literally your my new bass teAcher u made notes understandable for me now I can find them anywhere on the neck thankyou seriously mean that I plan on learning all my scales from u

Well explained Sir. Those single coils are a good choice for this technique.
I actually found this technique by myself before! It's cool to finally see how to do it in different ways! I've been praticing it with a clicktrack and I can get it pretty fast now due to this video. Thanks Mark!

your the best man rabai...more power God bless
tnx. its very helpful
Thanks
You just fired it off like a fully automatic and brought it home. It's a cool riff--thank you.
Cool bass boss..
thank you ur a life saver.
Going down on the D string with the major scale and popping the major and minor thirds makes it sound a lot like 'Canon'
It takes 65 repetitions to build a new neural pathway in your brain. Don't give up, just repeat, repeat, repeat until you got it. It's science!
Excelent thank you so much!!!!!!!
freaking insane!

Didn’t expect to be able to do this. I have been putting in work tho.

Sweet
So you arent double thumbing? Are you slapping on top of the string? I m trying to do this, its going to take some time. Thanks for the video.
Are you up stroking the second slap? Maybe a lil easier.
Good
3:42 that look lol yeah just give up now
I'm using a five string bass too. Whenever I play slapping licks, the low b always makes a humming noise and it bothers me so much. How do you prevent the unwanted sound from low b string when you play slapping on your five string bass?
You have a choice of either using the thumb of the fretting hand or the ends of the fingers.
Thanks for the answer. I'll practice using my thumb.
+Jinwoong Kim - - How did you do with your practicing of this please? I'm just curious if the sound coming from my 4-Stringer is primarily due to fret rubbing. Thanks!
Who makes that bass?
Is there any body noted that G string sounds wrong, maybe the neck or fret....or the pickup magnet is not long enough....
I SLAPPA DE BASS, MON! SLAPPA DE BASS!!
What is the bpm?
Damon Kutt beats per minute
I mean bpm of the lick
Sounds like a Victir Wooten lick
Yes it does. That's why I say it in the vid. But this style and technique is obviously not just limited to victor wooten. It's a very popular type of lick.
