    43 of Level 42 has the funkiest bass riff ever. When I first heard it in the 80s, I had to hear it like 100 times in a row.

      I also wonder why Mark King is forgotten so often. His style is so unique and he uses such increadable groove patterns and tricks - wow. I saw him live in 1982 and after that I sold my Rickenbaker and bought an Alembic Spoiler.

    Cool ideas. Ida was also using double finger plucks to get some of the triplets at the end of the clup you played.
    You also touched on but didn't go into the left hand thump technique that Mark King uss a lot: thumping with middle, ring and pinky while fretting a note with his index finger, like in the main figure of Heathrow. Maybe next time?

    There are sooooooo many other mark king licks to explore . Mark , like many great bass players ( Jaco, will lee, charlie drayton, Mark was a drummer first. That's why he plays the way he does!..and sounds so funky. But the real amazing thing is that he sings lead , chews gum, & even flew on cables above the stage ( wembly 1986 video " hot water "and used to me a madman on stage. Jumping & running all over the place ..he's an amazing musician. Check out his 1st solo record "Infulences"..he played almost every instrument on it!..Mark is Mr. LEVEL 42 !! ..and is still doing it as good as ever!!

    Hey Julia .. I was watching this one again .. you make it look easy & I thought I might share a few tips I use to compensate / overcome my lack of mobility in all left hand fingers .. I use a delay & a slap back echo set to allow ' me ' time to get set for the next part . Of course if you try this it will not work in every situation But it helps me when I am trying to record & if I use a looper & ( when I get it right ) I can Bounce along as if I am playing way beyond my own personal skills .. Think like the ' Edge ' in U2 .. when he get's in time with himself .. as I say not always practical live but handy for short sections .. Love you all at Thomann .. So much stuff I'd like to buy Direct from you at Big store but with Covid & vat & delays at Borders .. it makes more sense for me to wait for now .. Stay safe & keep on being cool .

    Try sliding up from the 7th fret D note on the G String as a 1/16 note pickup on the last sixteenth of the bar before that Run for cover phrase ending lick! Still with the fourth pinky finger and other fingers flat across the neck for muting. 👍🏻

    @benmaguire4098 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Julia another cool lesson featuring some gr8 clips .. & now here is my Boring old man tips .. Lol To avoid RSI or repetitive strain injury which is common to Tennis player's One tip is to do what a lot of boring old guys like EVH & Mark knopfler admit to doing lol .. is to sit & watch TV & just keep " Noodling " Technically this will involve dividing your attention & allowing you to relax ( & can you imagine in the olden times there was no remote control & you had to keep getting up tochange channel lol ) But this habit of short periods of practice .. Rather than Intensive Focus Method ( which is useful at other times ) means that the part of your Brain that controls ' Muscle Memory ' is engaged in a different way .. & also that some moves start to happen automatically .. like the muting & damping .. Also I heard a rumour that in Mark Kings early day's He used to heavily tape up his Thumb ( & having an Alembic bass didn't hurt ) Peace & love to all at Thommann

    Hi Julia, big fan. Would you consider doing a bass review for “best left handed basses”? Lefties are so likely to be stuck with entry level and 1st tier basses. How about showing us some higher level and higher end lefties that maybe available to us. I only ask because it is so frustrating watching ‘basses of the year’ videos when all those desirable instruments are unlikely to be available in a left handed version.
