I have a friend who lives in a dark depressive world. He lost one eye to cancer and the other only has peripheral vision, yet with some effort he can watch a video. When I spoke with him the other day he told me he wanted to play slap bass, but could not begin to understand how. Mark, you will help him out of that dark hole he lives in. I can't even imagine how excited he will be when he gets your videos. Thank you.
I have seen a lot of good lessons now on this subject but I have to say you are one of the most talent and natural teachers I have ever seen. I am a bass teacher myself and I take my hat off to your clear articulate well paced style of delivery. truly teaching of the highest order. Respect!
"But when used in conjunction with the other techniques, like slapping and popping and muting and hammer-on, we get the following kind of effect": Poceeds to kill off all of my self-confidence "okey?"
This is by far the best and most informative video on Bass I've ever seen. You are an amazing teacher. I've been playing bass for 15 years and I learned a lot here. Always strive to improve no matter how long you've been playing!
Great lesson. Gave me a blister but i got it now. 45 mins ago I couldn't do this at all. Love this channel. Thanks for everything Mark! Have learned more here in the last few weeks than i have in 20 years. So good!!! :)
Really really AWESOME lessons, by the way. Taking from very basic and expanding it to the most sofisticated, also teaching how to aplly the things into your own licks instead of teaching a simple lick the dies there. I'm learning so much from all these videos, I've seen all of them. Thank you so very much.
Thank you so much, I've been trying to find someone who can explain it with the right words for me, I'm definitely going to practice this, riffs I hear in my head I can't play for simple fact I haven't figured the mute out yet, so thank you again.
You sir, are an amazing teacher. Your video lessons have done more for my learning and progress than any other youtuber. Thanks so much for all your awesome lessons. Cheers.
HELLO mark ... I'll been playing for about 5 years now and over the time and over time i had some one on one lesson with some bass players that charged a fee of $70 an hour and still had no clue of what they was do ... Anyway i like the way you take the time to explain what you are do , that mean a lot for beginner bass players ... Thank you ...
this is awesome! i was a drummer before i picked up bass, but i was too scared to try this technique. i didnt realize how similar it is to actually drumming! like fills are 99% just rudiments so it makes it easy to transfer from the wrists to the fingers, its making me think about playing around with some of the more obscure rudiments!
"0:54" slight raise of the eyebrows "Okay?" :-D ...yeah, mate, easy......can I get back to you as I appear to have a lot of work to do. Just found your vids recently and found them to be some of the best and most informative on here. Ta!
Oye muchas gracias amigo, de verdad que siempre pensé que tocaba mover la muñeca mucho más rápido que un slap común para conseguir ese efecto jajaja, gran video y gran lección.
Great tutorial mark! One question. my hand is very tense when trying to speed up.... does practice help me hand relax or any other technique to relax it? thanks
Thank you for another great lesson! My slap licks always come out sounding marchy, instead of funky. I have a hard time using my thumb twice between palm mutes. Obviously practicing this lesson will help. Any other additional ideas?
Every time I try the palm slap either a note or harmonic rings out instead of a dull thud. Please explain how to get the dull thud note a bit more, it seems a number of people have this problem.
Watch exactly how my hand moves. Don't press down. Just smack with the fingers in the area of the knuckle half way down towards the palm. Move the hand almost as a whole. Not just from the knuckle.
Thanks very much for replying Mark, will try what you suggest - as it happens I might have got it anyway after 25 mins of trial and error without thinking about how I got there - but I will follow what you suggest.
First of all, what a great lesson! I'm spanish and I got everything 100% good, such a great teacher! Now I have a question, I have been playing the electric guitar for 4 years and a half now and recently a friend of mine sold me his bass so I picked it up and started learning a few songs on it and it is going to be 3 weeks now since I play the bass guitar, and the thing is that I can play al the styles you taught quite good therefore that makes me think I am doing well with the bass playing. Now the question is: Do you recommend me to keep on playing more seriously or are this just some begginer tecnichal lessons?
Heck yeah really good lessons, I will follow here and check your site and honestly i'm amazed by the fact that you are teaching on a soundgear bass... most ppl freaks out thinking in ibanez... and I love it it sounds great! cool video thanks a lot!
I've had that Ibanez since '92 and I still love the fast neck. It's not so good for certain gigs but for the quick technical stuff it works a treat. I don't really listen to what other people say about basses. People talk crap. Whatever works for you and the gig you're doing is right.
Hey man, great lesson! I have a question though, I really can't get the sound needed for ex. 1. How much I try, with all different kinds of stiffness of the hand, power, whatever.. I always make at least a bit of fret sound with it. Any magic trick? Practicing doesn't seem to help, cause I don't know where to improve!
Your lessons are brilliant...perfectly thought out and perfectly taught with a lovely manner...Thanks for them. I have an audition on Tue for a samba/funk band and I have been practicing from your lessons all month while watching the world cup...study lesson for 1/2 an hour...practice for 90 min. Do you have a lesson on Pick up selection, amps and pedals to go with this style?
muted palm is impossible for me and not simple, does the right hand mute the strings when the left hand slaps? because you seem that you dont, if i try this i got fret buzz
Thanks - great lesson. I am struggling to not have the fretting hand actually sound a note, and keep the sound purely percussive. Is it just a case of keep practicing (and I'm slapping too hard? )
Matteo Marasco Sure can, Claypool does this in the Tommy The Cat bass solo on a 6 string even. More strings can make muting techniques a good deal harder though
You don't need a great instrument to sound good. This tells me that much. But It is logical. You don't get endorsements sounding lousy on basic instruments. If you got talent, you make the instrument sound great, not the other way around. Seems nowadays people make videos more about the instruments, not about the talent. Not to put down anyone, but what I want to say is that if you have talent, you will get good sound from pretty much anything.
putting Mark KING and les clayppol in the same sentence is blaspheme! Mark King is the king of bass and he created one of the best band EVER: LEVEL 42 les claypool created one of the most stupid useless noisy band of all times : primus!!!!

Slacker G Guitar Skills it's been a year, how's he holding up?
It’s been three years, how is he holding up now?
It's been four years
How is he holding up?
It's been five years, how is his bass journey going?
@@Max-el7zd He gave it up BUMMERS

TOTALLY AGREE...I SAW TEACHERS BUT THEY WERE MORE LIKE GIVING A SHOW..THIS MAN TAKES HIS TIME TO BROKE IT PIECE FOR PIECE
elisabeth tenberge yes, he's talented in communication as much as in bass playing.
"Okey?"
I love how he says this word... :D
Exactly
Hahah and always after some heavy slapp
Greetings from Russia). I have my life in 54 and thank you that brought me back to the youth), forced adain to study to learn from you. THANK

This is my 4th time watching this video. I can finally do most of it. Hang in there if you are struggling.
Thank you so much, I've been trying to find someone who can explain it with the right words for me, I'm definitely going to practice this, riffs I hear in my head I can't play for simple fact I haven't figured the mute out yet, so thank you again.
Love your lessons mate - thank you. You are an absolute beast of a player
probably one of the most usefull lesson I've seen on slap bass
You sir, are an amazing teacher. Your video lessons have done more for my learning and progress than any other youtuber. Thanks so much for all your awesome lessons. Cheers.
3:04 reminded me of "We care a lot", by Faith No more. Anyway, do carry on...
it is a dirty job but someone's gonna do it..
Best tutorial for slapping I ever saw until now. Thanks a lot
Brilliant thanks! Really breaks down the mystery of what's going on when you here fast slap riff. Can't wait to practice these!

Yeah I was just kinda laughing at him "Okay?"
"Actually no..."
Guess I'll start practicing!
especially when he was building up speed on those fast 4 group of 3s and last group of 4s. inspires me to practice even more.
Oye muchas gracias amigo, de verdad que siempre pensé que tocaba mover la muñeca mucho más rápido que un slap común para conseguir ese efecto jajaja, gran video y gran lección.
Best slap tut I've seen on YT, thank you Mark!
Thanks a lot for giving time to Teach Mark, God bless you more.
Great lesson,I can't understand why anyone would dislike the video, jealousy ?
0:46 *plays an insanely hard slap bass riff and make it just seem like nothing*
watching this now, thank you for this content and that lick example was perfect
Just what I wanted. Well done sir! Bravo!
Great tutorial mark! One question. my hand is very tense when trying to speed up.... does practice help me hand relax or any other technique to relax it? thanks

I´m having a little problem when a do the mute slap with my left hand, i´m getting an armonic note because the 7 fret in the E string
same here and it doesnt matter 7th fret or others...there is always a "note " sound not mute sound :/
maybe you can change your string and tune string more close to freetboard, it work for me
Its because there's harmonics all over each string. The strongest ones are on the 5th, 7th, 12th, 19th, and 24th fret
Question, how do you get the mute to actually mute, and not just be a hammer on?
Sooo glad I found your videos!
Whenever I go to slap the a, d, or g string, i end up hitting another string. Low e is fine, but I can’t hit any other string by itself.

+TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons how to slap like a pro?
I couldn't get this until i watched a different video. Now my left hand slap got slap power just depending on the positioning of the thumb.

You are awesome!! Your lesson really helped out alot!!! Thanks so much!!!

Nice lesson! Btw what is the bass you are using in this video sir?
+Redback Breeder probably 90's Ibanez SR800 or 900
+Stefan Verbeeck It's an Ibanez SR1000. Got it about 1992. They were all the rage back then. There was a pink one and a blue one. I got the blue one.
Super useful. THANKS SO SUCH
Another fine tutorial

sweet bass)
please how do i read the pdf
Thanks - great lesson. I am struggling to not have the fretting hand actually sound a note, and keep the sound purely percussive. Is it just a case of keep practicing (and I'm slapping too hard? )
sensationalleslie had same issue, the solution I found was keeping fingers a little "morbid"; hit even strong, but not with the hand thick as a brick
thanks so much bro. so amazed
Impressive
Thanks a lot Maestro
i love it too.
Can u get the same effect on a 5 string bass?
Matteo Marasco Sure can, Claypool does this in the Tommy The Cat bass solo on a 6 string even. More strings can make muting techniques a good deal harder though
6:45
this is so hard!!
once you got the clue, the technic, teh feeling, you can create your own rhythmic skills
Amazing
Thanks

Excellent... really good info... thanks.

+Raato Poloinen Its the ear, not the gear. :)
I always wanted to know how to produce those sounds. I'm so elated that I feel like I've just discovered the cure for cancer after watching this.
Yeah, I really suck. :( Great stuff here indeed.
I dont know why he didn't use Lacquer Head... Easiest (primus) bass line...
like it :-)
