Im a guitarist and just looked up this video to figure out what the hell Les Claypool was doing on this song. Very detailed video and i feel that if I played bass I would easily be able to understand your teachings. You are a very talented person just like Les, 10/10 video 🤘
Thank you so much Mark for this lesson ! At the risk of repeating myself, you're the best teacher I've seen round here, and thank you for the time you spent for all of us !
Im really new to bass, when i first looked at the tab on its own it looked like goddamn hieroglyphs. You broke this down in a really digestible format, thanks dude
Absolutely the best bass tutorials on YT imo. Love how Les Claypool has gone beyond traditional bass playing and has adopted a style that's percussive (ghost notes), rhythmic (chords), and lead (ala Geddy). Thanks for breaking it down into the basics. You make it look easy.
really great video. i love tutorials on how to play "ghost notes" as a guitarist turned bassist recently, im fascinated with all the percussion that can be done. thumping and double thumb and alternate slap picking as well as a lot of more melodic tapping with those iconic claypool sour notes (especially on fretless) sounds soooo cool
Very awesome. I watched one of your videos years ago about 3 finger picking. It was very helpful. I was playing with the strap on then I took it off then stood up and the bass almost hit the floor. 😅
Because of the alexis sklarevski slap bass video I constantly watched, I can't help but do: Thumb, hammer ghost, thumb, pop It's like I'm relearning the technique all over again
You are spot on mark, only thing ive been hearing from listening to the tune, is after he hits the c power chord, i can hear the slapping and popping from the intro, but it sounds as if hes doing something else, its like an low E and e sharp too, as well as that slapping bit, you can hear that new string metallic sound, im probably wrong as im just new too bass, wish we could get an isolated track, maybe he doubled it up, we'll never know, but anyway subscribed and your helping me so much, love it buddy
Maybe I'm thinking too much into it, but it definitely sounds as if its a double track with bass copying the guitar, with the slaps and pops above haha, happy new year anyway lol, I'm just sitting with a few cans trying to learn Les and yourself haha, it's all good fun 😂❤❤
There's a possibility it could just be the sound of the slapping etc, I've only been playing for 6 months, but have experience on guitar but have moved to bass, your videos are brilliant, I'd love a bass lesson from you personally, if you can contact me, 😀 😊
This dude is fucking legit! Not bashing Les but his riffs can be simple but the complexity of the riffs mixed with everything is what makes Primus so SUCK so bad. Great video brother!
Nice! Love Les! If you could do one on Tommy the Cat or Jerry Was A Race Car Driver which are the hardest songs in their catalogue to me on bass, that would be amazing!!
Overall I agree totally, but disagree about the swing rhythm. This song, as with 95% of Primus' material, is just straight 16th notes. There are 6-tuplets for the slap solo as well as a triplet in the bridge riff, but none of them have an actual swing rhythm to them - the "grid" is still straight, not swing.
the tricky parts for all these licks for me, is the coming back around to the thumb note to start off the lick....you kind of short shrifted the difficulty (and speed) required to in essence , 'double slap' the thumb on the final note of the simple loop , to the first note of the same simple loop, particularly for that solo. That is where the difficulty lies for all the patterns, imo. Connecting the final note back into the first note of all the patterns.
does anyone know any youtube channel as good as this one but for piano? i mean, structured and everything, for almost beginners... ps mark you're amazing
double thumb on the solo is easier (for me, anyway) and snappier. same two thumb hits, but then up-thumb after the palm mute. t-t-pm-tu-s-pm. when you're doing it right (his way or mine), you can feel the waltz time in it. KEvron
Enfield Lionheart bass. Normally go totally direct for the vids (listen to some for the pure bass sound). In this one I'm using a Darkglass Alpha Omega pedal for the overdrive.

If you were to do another Primus lesson, would you consider doing "To Defy the Laws of Tradition"? Your teaching style here is incredibly effective

@@ogmudbone2334 the man has good tutorials on many Claypool songs!

You got that tone dialed in for this perfectly🍻
Oh lawd that tone
Les is in my top three bassists for sure, wicked fast hands
I’m loving this! Great work!
Thank you so much demystifying the most intimidating riff I heard when I started on bass
Les Claypool is a the innovator. Who created something new.

Awesome lesson,big Claypool fan!
Very cool, as always. Greetings from Moscow.
Thanks! Could not get the coordination down well but your video helped a lot.
Outstanding pedagogy, thanks!

Man this way harder than I thought to nail down 😂
This lesson is incredible! Thank you.
Les claypool is a bass genius
The God of Bass is impressed with your efforts, Sir.
16:24, man's a time traveller. Learned a 1999 song in the early 90s lol.
Listen again. I’m talking about the lick (from Stu Hamm) not this tune.

Can we get golden boy next? Love your work!
I want to request a «Natural Joe» cover. I’ve been breaking my brains trying to figure it out
You always pick the coolest stuff to cover Mark great video

Already done both of them
thanks. i always wanted to learn this one. it is of the primus record i like the least, but this song is good.
Antipop is my favorite primus album, but I am probably the only human in the world with that opinion.
@@chesspunk489 you are not alone ;)
That's a monster bass lick 😁
Rad! Nice breakdown
Great lesson again 👍🏿
AWESOME STUFF!
Awesome lesson! Will take some sweating till I make it sound as it should.. ;-)
The amazing thing about Les Claypools' playing is he often takes a simplistic riff, structures it around a repetitive swing rhythm.
Love this line!!

Can you talk about Les's use of a tremolo especially on those damn blue collar tweakers
THANK YOU.
Oh good. Another social media network. Now I won’t be so lonely.
Thanks so much!!!
Natural Joe was even better, do that one next 🤙
does anyone know any youtube channel as good as this one but for piano? i mean, structured and everything, for almost beginners...
ps mark you're amazing
I wondered how he did those triplets! I'd been trying slap hammer on double thumb double pop. It works but it doesn't sound quite the same. Thanks!
So hard!! But great lesson!

Hi Mark. What are you tone settings etc for this sound. It’s a great copy of the original!!!
Everything flat (direct recording) but with Darkglass Alpha Omega for a little overdrive
No, it's even better.
More les Claypool !!! …pls…
thanks Mark! Greetings from Russia
Good job

That's a gorgeous sounding bass, are you using any pedals here or it that how that bass sounds? and if so what is it ?
Enfield Lionheart bass. Normally go totally direct for the vids (listen to some for the pure bass sound). In this one I'm using a Darkglass Alpha Omega pedal for the overdrive.

What are your tone settings? And are you using any pedals? Or just light drive with heavy compression?
Side note. The main riff is weirdly muted with his thumb aswell
Harder than it looks really
My guy, what compression and/or other pedals/effects are you using here?
I thought this was in B not E? Like for a five string bass?
Badass paying
Think I could do this on my 110’s?
It starts at 1:28
What bass is this you’re playing?
For sound: are you using a bass driver like Sansamp’s?
Darkglass Alpha Omega
Would have been nice if you wore a cheesy biker helmet / shades like Les wore in your thumbnail
Now sing as well
No anesthesia bass solo!!!
