Exactly. I’m guessing visiting North Korea can be an amazing experience because it truly looks like a very beautiful country, all while it may also be scary because of how strict the regime is, and I’m guessing being there as a visitor is like constantly walking on eggshells to stay safe. I also believe it’s fully possible to appreciate a place regardless of the political situation and that you won’t get into trouble if you don’t cause any trouble, at least in a place like North Korea. Respect the country, its leaders and its people and leave politics out of it when visiting a place that is or has been behind an iron curtain. Closest I’ve been myself to such a situation is China. It’s a lot more open than it has been, but you still have to be a bit mindful of what you say and do in a very public situation such as on the Internet.

My ex girlfriend was a television New Zealand news reporter, on assignment to NK all the journalists were placed on specific levels of the building this occurred not just in Pyongyang. It became apparent to her and colleagues their was a faint glow at night around the edges of the mirror, and upon closer inspection found there were 2 way mirrors everywhere. They also pretty openly bug all phone lines. They watched and listened to everything from conversations to myself and her employer, to watching her shower and dress. If I were a journalist, female at that, I'd avoid like the plague.

Yes! It's very true. To various extents, all communist nations only will show tourists what they want them to see. DPRK strayed from straight Marxist Communism, as their system is a mix of Kim I'l Song's ideaology, "Juche" ("Self-Reliance") and Marxist and Stalinist Soviet-style Communism. The DPRK only allows a certain message to reach tourists about the history of the DPRK, it's government, struggles of it's people, etc. It also strictly polices the messages from the outside world to reach it's citizens. They enforce both what goes out and comes in with very harsh punishments. There are several documentary videos available about DPRK here on TH-cam. In many cases, from large producers, like "National Geographic" to smaller, independent producers, the government line is always the same, the tourist locations featured are always the same. Sometimes, the same government minders and tour guides are the same and the same government approved cameral shots and angles are used. You are right. For the most part, if you've seen one DPRK video, you have seen them all.

I was a kid then and had friends who left the country and I later saw what it meant to be raised in a democracy, how it could shape someones mentality and personsonality differently. It’s beautiful.. It’s a kind of haunting, eerie beauty. So empty and void of people, lonely, extremely peaceful in a way. It almost makes you feel like all of it was made for you. It’s not just there in the mountains, it seems like everywhere is the same. Huge cities, with empty streets, massive hotels with no guests, fine restaurants with no patrons. This only exists in North Korea.

    • @AYVYN

Honestly. It’s similar to being rich in a capitalist country. People scramble to solve your problems and serve you. You have a separate reality crafted for you with different rules and privileges.

It feels like those exploration computer games, where everything reacts to the player’s position.
When you walk to a speaker or a square - music starts playing, when you want food they take you to the one restaurant that’s been prepared just for you, and when you say hello to someone they have a scripted reply for everything…
I watched Bald and Bankrupt’s visit to NK, and I had trouble sleeping after because I kept imagining being in that hotel room alone at night.. afraid to fall asleep because you just never know… I feel so claustrophobic watching NK videos…

  • @zizipoil

I was in the same mountain range (Kumgang) back in 2005 when it was possible to cross the DMZ by land from South Korea.
The crossing was already an experience on its own.
We were parked with the South Korean tourists in a camp of prefabricated buildings surrounded by military fences and camps.
There was a local village next to our camp that look straight out of mad max with command and conquer-like propaganda towers screaming slogans all day.
We would travel by bus for pre-planned and mandatory tours each day with total interdiction to take any pictures while in the bus. Needless to say the villages we passed were utterly poor was well.
Guides would freak out if you'd do anything just off.
A funny anecdote was that we asked our guide what the text carved on a boulder was about. He said it was a military song and proceeded to sing it. It went on the tune of "O Christmas Tree"...
He was very surprised we knew that air :)
The nature was very beautiful but the 3 days we spent there are by far the weirdest of my entire life for many reasons and anecdotes.
I have since traveled to other weird countries (like Turkmenistan) but none compared to the spine chilling eerie feeling of North Korea.
