I just got into Dominion about a month ago and have been obsessed with it. Nothing on this list really clicked with me, but thank you for it either way.
Yeah, me neither. I really do not see anything that feels like dominion in that list in the slightest. The game I know that looks the most like Dominion is Thunderstone, but it's very clunky and repetitive. Somewhat close is Harry Potter : Hogwart Battle. Less clunky, but nowhere as replayable as Dominion... I have never found a game that could replace Dominion.
I'm not sure why you titled this "10 Board Games that are Better then Dominion". As you yourself put it much better at the 45 second mark, it's actually "10 Games for those who love Dominion". (Said somewhat defensively by someone who's a Dominion fanatic.) I've only played three of your suggestions. I heartily concur with Furnace and Concordia, which I've just recently discovered. I've only played Dice Forge once, but to me it just felt like Dominion: the Dice Game. Same basic principle, but with much less choice available.
No mention of Dale of Merchants, Automobiles, Quest for El Dorado, or Fort? 🥺 Lol still good recommendations though! Especially with Gizmos and Furnace with the engine building
Pretty sweet website you’ve developed there, Ben! Just purchased Dice Forge and Gizmos through it/your links, on your recommendations. Been on a board game kick lately, as my 5 and 9 year old boys love to play them; so far, for us, 2022 has been all about getting outside/beyond our ‘comfort zones’ of just the classic kids (Chutes & Ladders, Candyland, etc) and classic adults (Monopoly, etc) games we’ve played to no end. …also have Pompeii and Via Nebula Enroute, after having purchased them a few days ago; should be receiving those any day now, and look forward to playing them! Keep up the good work with what you are doing…you are on to something pretty special with your TH-cam channel here! As a ‘board game dad’, too, I love introducing my kids to new board games-beyond the fun and enjoyment inherent to them, I also see it as an opportunity-game dependent, of course-to teach them general valuable lessons about life, strategy, navigating people/relationships, managing resources, etc. thanks!
Also! Aquatica might be a great game for you! It has the drafting deck building like Concordia with the keep your entire deck available and then there is also a card that allows you to pick up all used cards including newly obtained cards.
I'ver never played Dominion the physical board game but I have played the digital version a lot, both the web client & the newer Steam version. Great game & I like some of your suggestions here a lot as well. Concordia is a personal favorite & Mystic Vale is an incredible digital adaptation of a board game, in fact probably the best digital adaptation of a board game I currently own. It's a shining example of a modern, fresh design w/o the clunkiness & aged game engine look found in the majority of digital board game adaptations. Innovation is a brilliant card game, which for us strikes the proper balance of strategy, lightning fast gameplay & having to be fast on your feet to adjust to the rapidly changing game state. Furnace is one that I am getting more & more interested in as I hear more about it and as far as Gizmos goes, well watching videos on it is probably as far as it gets....w/ two small grandchildren in the family it would probably have to be held under lock & key :)
Love your commentary. This past weekend, I played the two-player Crete map for Concordia. Surprising what a difference the map layout can make. I’m glad my recommendations jived with you, but I also hope I was able to put a new game on your radar.
Great video! I watched for the thumbnail despite the title, which I think was a good call because the title is misleading. It's definitely "10 games to play if you liked dominion"
The title is to demonstrate that this video is part of my “Better than” series. in this case, it’s more of a “If you also like” theme, but I was trying to match the convention I set in earlier videos.
It’s on my list, but I haven’t played it yet. A few weeks ago I made a video comparing Root to Scythe, (a “which is better?“ video) but I haven’t tried Oath yet. I’ll get on that!
I haven't played Friday, but none of the other games on the list is better than Dominion. They're different than Dominion and most of them are great games in their own right but there's no particular metric to put them above Dominion. Or bellow Dominion for that matter. I don't see why any Dominion lover would prefer any of these games. Though as someone who loves many of the games on this list, I'm happy to say that I've been playing them for years and still play Dominion so no worries, just because Dominion is a thing of the past for this guy doesn't mean we have to follow suit. The game is as great as ever. And so are many games on this list. So use this video to expand your options rather than reduce them. Which of these great games are you going to play alongside Dominion rather than instead.
Awesome video! Love the idea of not just doing a bunch of Deckbuilders. I'd like to give a completely unrelated suggestion of refering to Mystic Vale as a "Deckforger".
Yeah, if the board-gaming hobby was a few centuries older, we would describe the mechanics in Latin like we name genus and species: “Deck forger” (Mystic Vale) “Dice forger” (Dice Forge) Using general categories just isn’t specific enough!
I've played six of these and only kept one of them (Elysium). I still think Dominion is one of the best games ever made and none of these come close to it. The only game I've ever played that made me stop and think, "Hmm, is this better than Dominion . . . nah" is Shards of Infinity.
Valeria Card Kingdoms was my go to game for the bellcurve ,2 dice, type of games, for a long time. Great art and easy, family friendly, rules. Space Base seems rather juicy too, but i have not gotten it to the table yet.
I have never played it, but I took a look at it during my research for one of my videos. (By "research" I mean, I looked through the rules for something that stood out.) It didn't make a huge impression on me, but sometimes you just have to play. It's good, huh?
I'm so new to modern board gaming, I've never actually played Dominion. But I have played a few on your top 10 that are great games. Since, you like Innovation, have you tried Progress: Evolution of Technology? I just picked it up after watching a Chairman of the Board review. It's really good, and seems to have a lot in common with Innovation. Better art though.😉 I might add Rune Stones and San Juan to your list, too....both are really enjoyable.
For someone who’s “new” to board games, you’ve sure played a variety of games! To answer your questions, I haven’t even heard of Progress but the title alone intrigues me. If this theme is something you are into, a great technology game is Beyond the Sun. Yeah, you’re right, Innovation art isn’t even crummy, it’s non-existent. I guess I’m biased because I’ve played it so many times. I need to take a look at Rune Stones and yeah, San Juan is a great “dessert” game.
I see the source of confusion. They would be neither. I was actually thinking of culinary-themed games in which players earn victory points by shredding vegetables: “10 Grate Games”
Dice forge looks wild, never heard of it and it is currently on sale on amazon. Your videos do an excellent job highlighting games that appear to be absent from most others' lists, but not by pulling in an out of print game that is only available for an absurd price on eBay. Thanks for another great video.
I really appreciate your comment. That is EXACTLY my goal. I enjoy sharing lesser known games and I almost always check availability. Anyway, it feels good to have that be appreciated. Thanks again for watching!
Plot twist: nothing is better than Dominion
Indeed! Often immitated, never surpassed.

Your message puts wind in my sails. Thank you so much. What you named is what I’m all about! I hope you are happy with my recommendations.

Great video! Not related but really want to hear your thoughts on Oath by Leder Games
It’s on my list, but I haven’t played it yet. A few weeks ago I made a video comparing Root to Scythe, (a “which is better?“ video) but I haven’t tried Oath yet. I’ll get on that!

@@theperfectboardgame haha, yeah, and if they came out today they'd be called Deckmanufacturers, Decktiktokdance, or even Deck-uwus. God forbid.
I've played six of these and only kept one of them (Elysium). I still think Dominion is one of the best games ever made and none of these come close to it. The only game I've ever played that made me stop and think, "Hmm, is this better than Dominion . . . nah" is Shards of Infinity.
nice list! love it, good review :) keep it up!
My favorite is Heart of Crown. Extremely replayable. Highly recommend you check it out.
I'll check it out! Thank you for the recommendation.
I would be concerned about the "faces" in Dice Forge breaking with so much use. I assume they are just cardboard.
Actually, they are not. They are plastic and very tough. They feel almost like the plastic of Legos.
@@theperfectboardgame Thanks for the clarification. It looked like you had a punchboard in the video. Lego-like would make it more sustainable.
Ah yes. It looks like that, but it’s actually an organizer tray.
Great and varied list. Orleans with the Intrigue and new deeds expansion is a 9/10 for me.
Valeria Card Kingdoms was my go to game for the bellcurve ,2 dice, type of games, for a long time. Great art and easy, family friendly, rules.

Nothing is better than Dominion. There are many games that are different. But none I know that is straight up superior.
Nothing is better if you were rating games on renown. But I thought it worthwhile to bring attention to other, related games.
Also dominion is still awesome and worth playing
No. These games are not better. I played some of them.
Nice list but unfortunate title.
But if it were just "10 Great Games", would they be the best, or just great?
I see the source of confusion. They would be neither. I was actually thinking of culinary-themed games in which players earn victory points by shredding vegetables: “10 Grate Games”
…and they would be the best in their category. 😂
