  • So the time has come for another engine removal!
MGF is now donating its 1.8 VVC engine to go in my MG Midget and this video shows how to remove the rear subframe complete with the engine and gearbox.
The whole process takes a couple of hours and is actually a pretty easy task.
The next step for me will be to clean and paint the engine before swapping it with the 1.4 K series i currently have in the Midget.
If you like this video, be sure to check out some of my other project's and consider subscribing if you haven't already.

Worth a mention that the rear caliper brake pipes and cable can be left attcached to the caliper, just undo the two retaining bolts and swing them out the way

So, being a metro subframe that has been manipulated to take the rover engine and gearbox and having used metro subframes in the past, after seeing your video I feel it should be said; TRIKE IT!
There now, that feels better. It looks as though I may be looking for an mgf for a future project.
Thankyou for that video, it was fun to watch and informative into the bargain.

Yeah it did seem a shame but alot of the parts were sold to keep others on the road and the engine will live on in my Midget 😁

Nicely done mark, I bet taking it out upwards would have been a knuckle skinning nightmare, and as you have access to a lift seems a no brainer, It should bolt straight in to the midget as you suggest. what are these other upgrades you mention eh!. I noticed it looks nicely oil and coolant tight hence the dry and dusty appearance and that has got to be good

Thanks for the comment Tony. I think even without a ramp, going out the bottom would be the easier option. The other upgrades are being kept secret at the moment until i decide for sure which ones im going for 😉

Let us know when you are putting a Honda K24 turbo back into the MGF?

Unfortunately the MGF is long scrapped. That would have been a good project

Informative yes but my reservation about this video is that it is evident that the engine is being removed with the intention that the car is going to be scrapped. There a lot of techniques that need to be used if you are planning to rebuild and renovate a viable vehicle.. By way of example it is a good idea to avoid using a screwdriver to free up the gear change cables and destroy the clips. Cutting brake pipes is another example of scrapyard dismantling.

I just don't know why you are scrapping it?

Only needed the engine. Shell was no good really and all the suspension needed repair

Is it 1.6 or 1.8? Thank you.

It's the 1.8 with vvc. The 143hp version
