Fabulous song, but in the UK it was the first of a string of big hits. Inside Out was the final one in 1982. The current version of the group is based in the UK.
@@trickygoose2 While 1977's "Native New Yorker" was their only mainstream chart hit in the US, their subsequent releases were hits on the US R&B and dance charts, including this 1982 song.
@@spantle3888Great choices!! "Revival" is one of my all-time favorite songs by them. My road playlist has "Jessica," "Revival," and the Doobie Brothers' "Jesus Is Alright" consecutively. I've requested they respond to "Revival" many times. Gonna miss Dickey Betts. R.I.P. 🙏
In my humble opinion they were the funkiest band to come out of New York, absolutely loved they sound and they were definitely big in clubs over here in the UK.
They had more success in the UK than their native US. Between 1977 and 1982 they had 5 top ten hits. This song reached #3 in 1982. Their other hits were, "Native New Yorker" #5 in 1977, "Use It Up And Wear It Out" #1 in 1980, "Going Back To My Roots" #4 in 1981 and "If You're Looking For A Way Out" #6 in 1980. Loved dancing to Odyssey back then and still love the tunes today. Hope you check out these other tunes, they're all as great as this one. Much love ❤❤❤❤❤
Yes, they were never huge but they got a good amount of airplay in Europe. I love how diverse those years were, mainstream radio would play this and then some post punk band and then some synth pop.
The bass guitarist is Steve Adams (RIP) who was also bassist for the noted Funk band Slave. I strongly suggest you check out some of Slave's music. They are from Dayton, Ohio, a city noted for its Funk musicians that came out of it: The Ohio Players, Bootsy & Catfish Collins (both of whom played for James Brown and P-Funk), the aforementioned Slave, as well as the legendary master of the Talkbox, Roger Troutman (RIP) and his band Zapp.
Great tune for your chair dancing! I live in the UK where there are still places where us oldies can go to relive our youth to these songs. If you have them in Oaklahoma then get a babysitter, have a date night and get yourself out there. 🕺
Reminds me when I was in the hospital having a kidney operation in 1982, the hospital radio DJ came round to ack the patients what song they wanted played, I got this song played I loved it ❤
I hadn't realised how much bass this song had until now! Amazing! For a more dancey Odyssey check out 'Use It Up and Wear It Out', and for their softer side, try 'If Youre Looking For A Way Out'.
Love this at first listen. Has an easy-going early ‘80s groove with lots of disco strings. (And a little funk.). Her voice is so distinct! Totally reminds me of their hit, “Native New Yorker". (One of my fave disco songs ever.)
I was so excited when I saw you were reacting to this amazing song. The backing track has so many wonderful elements which I'm surprised haven't been sampled yet in a mainstream track. The lead vocal contains a range of emotions including tenderness, longing, lust, warmth, and desperation; it's totally compelling.
IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A WAY OUT.. is the most mature love song EVER written. Subliminal. If you really love them...set them free. Odyssey were incredible.
Loved this group, Use It Up Where It Out…..Going Back To My Roots…..Native New Yorker……and one beautiful ballad…..If Your Looking For A Way Out……as disco was being shunned stateside they chose wisely to move their sound to UK and Europe and we loved them.
Amber absolutely nailed this track. This was a couples dance groove, a little holding and touching while you twirled together, often played towards the end of the evening. ✌️
Guys, if you or your parents ever watched the 70s TV show "Good Times", there's an episode where the daughter, Thelma performs a contemporary/lyrical dance to their big hit "Native New Yorker". I love that scene. It's from season 5, episode 24 "That's Entertainment, Evans Style".
In the comments people have mentioned Steve Arrington, who produced this song. He had a great group called Slave, and the song I love is "Just A Touch of Love". HEAVY on the bass and Highly recommended!!
One of my favorite songs from the 80s. You can play it with Slave’s Watching You, they sound similar. Checkout Raw Silk’s Do It To The Music! Also Tom Browne’s Funkin For Jamaica. Can’t wait until they get to Raw Silk, Sharon Redd, France Joli and Atlantic Starr!

Mark developed his bass style after witnessing America thumb slapping bass technique being used in funk and jazz funk. The Bass on Inside Out by Sandy Anderson really takes the sound up another level he is a truly great exponent of that style.
Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. Odyssey had some great disco songs and this isn't even the best of them. They had great success in the UK charts. I would suggest 'Back To My Roots' or the only No.1 they had in the UK, called 'Use It Up and Wear It Out'. Æx 🙏

Party lites , Snapshot , Slide and Watchung you ..Yall need to listen to that.
It’s actually Steve Anderson, but he definitely sounds like he’s channeling Mark Adams.
One Bad bassist
(Samuel) Sandy Anderson on bass doing Mark Adams' "Watching You" bassline.
Another rollerskating jam. Very smooth, mellow but gets you on the dance floor skates or feet.
Summer of '82 had this on repeat every morning
What a GREAT band! When you get back to them again can I suggest Native New Yorker as the next track? Love the reviews 😊👍
