Dude, you may not be losing yer mind as you may think! Most singles on the ABC/Dunhill label were "dedicated mixes"; meaning they were unique compared to LP versions. You should be ashamed as many years as you have interrupting songs like this I don't give a holy crap if you're from heaven. You're more important than the artist that's why I'll never watch you again
I enjoyed watching his reaction to this song. Because its a song about a guy that went to his first 70's party. And, apparently wasnt brought up in that environment. Sooo, it was a shock for this young man. Three Dog Night did an awesome job with this song.
Three Dog Night never disappoints. So much creative energy and collaboration could not be sustained, and they crashed and burned much too quickly. I had them on 8-Track, and any one of their songs immediately triggers memories of sandalwood incense. Beginning with "Old Fashioned Love Song," they formed they soundtrack of the first half of my 1970s.
I knew you guys would like the Oklahoma reference! One thing that Three Dog Night excels in (another group that does this is Styx) is songs that start very quiet and mellow with a few instruments, and ends bold and loud and all the instruments. The 70s were a great decade for popular music.
First memories of Gordon Lightfoot was his appearances on County Junction on CKVR TV, Barrie with Terry Wheland and they called themselves the Twotimers. This was in the early 1960s. Later I saw him at a performance in 1966 organized by a friend at Kemptville Agricultural College which was in a small town near Ottawa. My uncle worked at CBC and regularly saw Gordon while he was one of the members of a sqare dance company that performed weekly on the Country Hoedown Show. In an interview Gordon stated these were the most difficult performances he ever had to do. The steps were complicated and different each week. Greatly missed, many memories of this Canadian Icon.
Three Dog Night had some of the best voices, harmonies, and incredible song lyrics! they have sooo many amazing songs! I grew up on this and many of the late sixties and all of the seventies music!
Hoyt was also a singer who had several hits in the country genere and had a very deep, kind of gravely voice. One, "Lion in the Winter" was a duet with Linda Ronstadt.
This is my favorite Three Dog Night song. It reminds me so much of that time of my life. Watching out for our environment and praying we didn’t screw it up. The Reagan and the 80’s came and blew it all up
I see this was posted a year ago but I HAD to comment. I got a kick outta watchin ya'lls reaction. It was so incredible to grow up in this time. I'm a child of the 60's, 70's.... this was one of my all time favorites. Couldn't WAIT to get the album! Thanks for the great memories. ❤😊
Written by Hoyt Axton who's mother Mae Axton wrote Heartbreak Hotel for Elvis living here in Jacksonville in the mid 50's.She was a school teacher here while writing. He inherited her talent and has many other well known hits.He was also the inventor in the movie Gremlins.By the way the Axton family was originally from Oklahoma. Maybe that is why the song refers being to Oklahoma. Elvis used to perform this at his shows. Why wouldn't he as Mae was a big part of him making it big.It was Mae who introduced Elvis to his manager Col.Parker.
I loved when you reacted to Mama Told me Not to Come, and Joy to the World. I don't think there is a bad Three Dog Night song. I lived outside of the states when I first heard them! Many special memories!! I'm smiling!!
Glad you love this! And it was clear that you did even before you heard the Oklahoma reference! Two other excellent Three Dog Night tunes to hear: The Show Must Go On and Black And White.
They took songs written by other artists/songwriters and gave them their own personal style. Absolutely huge in the late 60's/early 70's. So many hit singles you can't count 'em.
That era still had very few bands who wrote their own songs. And just about every band did covers on their albums. Three dog night was able to make the more of them their own and hits
It is amazing to watch how you groove to the mellow start and then you smoothly transition into rocking out. They were an amazing group. I'm glad young people like you can appreciate the music I grew up with.
This is one of my absolute favorites from TDN. What a very unique and enormously talented band. Having three lead singers is somewhat unusual, and definitely allows them to deliver that one of a kind sound. Hoyt Axton was a fantastic songwriter. ♥️✌🏼😎
One of my absolute favorite bands. Three lead singers who alternate on different songs. Harmonies are amazing. Every song recommended here is fantastic.
I hear all of these 70's bands being reacted to by all the reaction channels.. but I never see anyone doing any of the Dr. Hook hits!!! Sylvia's Mother, When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman, Cover Of A Rolling Stone, Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk.. and The Medicine Show.. just to get you started!!! I think these guys got played at every house party back in the 70's because is was just the most fun band to party to!! Anyway.......
I've been a drummer for over 50 years, and Floyd Sneed, Three Dog Night's drummer, is the man I have fashioned my style after. I think he's soooo good!
Love you guys❣️ Hey I was born in 1954 this is my generation MUSIC❤ Turned 16 years old 1970❤ Woodstock, Jimmy Hendrix, Janice Joplin so many more! Along with CCR , Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Bad Company, Foreigner, Led Zeppelin, Eagles, Chicago, Seals and Crofts , Grand Funk Railroad, The Doobie Brothers, Hall & Oats, Air Supply, ZZ Top, Steely Dan, Bee Gees, Carpenter’s, Iron Maiden , Doors, Queen I could go on & on!!!
From 1969-1974, this band sold more concert tickets and albums than The Beatles. Not even kidding around. For real. Glad you liked it. This is one of my favorites by then. I also suggest Brickyard Blues.
My sister was 11 years older than me, so through her I listened to the British invasion. My brothers are/were 7 & 8 years older, and they introduced me to Three Dog Night, CCR, Bread, Chicago, America ... before my own teen years of the mid-to-late 70s. So this is a trip down memory lane. But my sister had a fondness for "Joy to the World" and taught most of it to our nieces/nephews ... so when she passed in 2012 we had a lot of music for her memorial - the Beatles especially. Then we did all of the somber things ... but we ended it with a "hit it" and "Joy to the World" blasted out of the speakers and all of those nieces/nephews who are all parents now, stood up and sang along. A wonderful moment ... and my love of Three Dog Night was cemented then. I recommend "Joy to the World - and teach it to your kids ...
I knew you guys would go crazy when they mentioned Oklahoma. As others have mentioned, Hoyt Axton who wrote the song and many others was born there. Great vocals by Cory Wells. I got to see them in April 1972 not long after this song came out and I had turned 11. It was my second concert shortly after seeing The Carpenters. Great experiences for a kid. Lots of great material to dive into from Three Dog Night. If you haven't done so yet, please listen to Liar and Celebrate.
The Hard Rock Cafe in Oklahoma has this written above the entry door: " Well, I've never been to Heaven, but I've been to Oklahoma ". It's literally the best thing in Oklahoma. If you've ever been to Oklahoma, you understand what I mean. Hoyt wrote that song to say that it doesn't matter where you're born/from. Everyone can like everyone and their music. Even if they're from Oklahoma. 🙃👌
The 45 versions of both are different. There's even a little doo-wop-ish part near the end that's not on the LP version of "An Old Fashioned Love Song". Lots of ABC/Dunhill singles were remixes.
Fun watching you guys enjoy this. When young I listened to this on vinyl waaayy back then. One of those tunes a kid thought was just not long enough, and 'skriitch!!' goes the needle for a replay! This song was always special. So happy to see the OK girl react.
Imagine You're Having A Picnic & You're Just Laying Back Watching The Clouds Go By While You Listen To This Truly Beautiful Classic,, Three Dog Night "Out In The Country" ☁🌜🐕 🐕 🐕🌛☁
I love Three Dog Night, they were the very first band I saw in concert back in 1973, and the drummer threw his drum sticks intonthe audience behind him and I almost got one but a giy next to me grabbed it at the same time and took it. THey were amazing and the tickets were only 15.00 to see 3 bands play that night lol. Times sure have changed. Ty fir bringing back a great memory. Stay groovy and keep on keepin on ✌️❣️
Saw the version of of this Band that is still touring about a month ago. Most members in their 70's now. It was great! Many many hits to explore. All good.
Three Dog Night was a great band. Interestingly, they never wrote their own music. Instead, they recorded music from up and coming song writers and performers. Eli's Coming, for example, was from Laura Nyro and One from Harry Nillson. Check out their song Sault Ste. Marie they did with the Tennessee Symphony Orchestra. We saw them in person a few times, always great!!
Cool story why "Shambala" never got properly mixed into stereo. Apparently one wasn't finished before the album's release date. The "stereo" version is really the mono mix in "reprocessed stereo" (one speaker tinny, other muddy, add reverb to both).
This was the EARLY 70s Baby .. JAY N AMBER PLEASE REACT TO THE PARTRIDGE FAMILYS SONG .... I THINK I LOVE YOU FROM 1971 ,,, You will dig it , And THANK ME .... I PROMISE , TAKE CARE
I was waiting for your reaction to "Well I never been to Heaven but I been to Oklahoma" You did not disappoint! On another point, I sure do love the English language. So many words that rhyme that make for great songwriting.
My first Oklahoma experience was terrifying. Was paid good money over Christmas, years ago, to drive a brand-new BMW from the Atlanta Airport to the Denver Airport. Christmas Eve, rush hour, driving through Oklahoma City...in the worst blizzard I've ever seen in my life. I finally got off of I-40 west of OKC, to a motel. Still snowing HEAVILY. I broke down and cried. So glad to be alive. A blizzard that was blowing sideways. Woke up Christmas Day to about 15" of snow...but the SUN was out !
Yes, Three Dog Night is a West Coast band. The band had 21 Billboard Top 40 hits between 1969 and 1975, with three hitting number one. Three Dog Night recorded many songs written by outside songwriters, and they helped to introduce mainstream audiences to writers such as Randy Newman ("Mama Told Me Not to Come"), Paul Williams ("An Old Fashioned Love Song"), and Hoyt Axton ("Joy to the World", "Never Been to Spain") & since Hoyt was the one who wrote this song, he is the one talking about Oklahoma.
Did y'all catch that they're basically saying that Oklahoma might be comparable to heaven?: "I've never been to heaven, but I've been to Oklahoma." This was a huge radio hit in 1971, one of many from them. Y'all would also like Paul Simon's "Love Me Like a Rock" from 1973.
“I’d Be So Happy” is a hidden Three Dog Night gem. It was originally recorded by Lighthouse, a Canadian band which specialized in horn arrangements. Amber would love some Lighthouse.
I just landed on your site by accident but I was listening to you & I'm probably one of those people 😅😅😅. I grew up with the music of the late 50, 60 & 70s. I loved the music because it was clean. Oh man! Flashback!! I hadn’t hard this since I grew up on the KS OK boarder back when this was my jam!! I absolutely loved this song! Loved the band, but this song was so mellow rock I know I had this on 8 Track, and vinyl, now I need the digital!
Great vocal performance by Cory Wells (R.I.P.) on this track. Lots of great tunes by this band. You guys need to check out One, Liar, Mama Told Me Not To Come, Out In The Country, Shambala, Eli's Coming. All hits. From 1968 through 1974 Three Dog Night was all over the radio.

Jay/Amber, you'll love their "Shambala" and "An Old Fashioned Love Song" !! edit- Cory Wells on lead vocals(Never Been To Spain)!
Yes! They're 𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 gonna 𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐩 over "Old Fashioned Love Song!" ♡
'Shambala' is great
Jumpin in on the yes train.
You absolutely can’t go wrong with your choices
Right on!!! 👍✌️🇨🇦
Yes. I was waiting for their reaction to the Oklahoma line. I knew they would love it.
Right styx starts out slowly than they jam
You guys are so adorable! 𝐎𝐊𝐋𝐀𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐀! Your smiles were a 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞 wide everytime you heard it! 😹♡
Three Dog Night had some of the best voices, harmonies, and incredible song lyrics! they have sooo many amazing songs! I grew up on this and many of the late sixties and all of the seventies music!
Love them so much. But you really need to hear Try and Little Tenderness and Eli’s Coming. The vocals are amazing
“Eli’s Coming”, live 1975.
They do a great rendition of "Try a Little Tenderness" and you should also listen to the original by Otis Redding.
Eli's Coming ! Live!! It's perfection!
Oh, yes, I was waiting for your reaction to Oklahoma! The pure joy was perfect. Ypi two are the best.
Happy to see young folks discovering our music. Sad that the music today is mostly electronic, very little actual talent.
This was written and first recorded by Hoyt Axton, who was, indeed, born in Oklahoma. He also played the wonderful father in Gremlins.
Hoyt was such a great song writer
Yep, it was on his "Joy To The World" album. It also has "The Pusher".
Hoyt was also a singer who had several hits in the country genere and had a very deep, kind of gravely voice. One, "Lion in the Winter" was a duet with Linda Ronstadt.
I was in my young teens when 3 Dog was Huge ,, Them sweet 70s
And also the father in "The Black Stallion." Wonderful film.
The funk and soul in this song!!!
Three Dog Night "Out In The Country" - great song you'll like.
Loved the look of surprise when they mentioned Oklahoma. Knew you would love it. Three Dog Night was a great band in the day.
In that era we had such great songwriters and the were great at finding good musicians to sing them.
Another example and great version of a song is 'Old Fashioned Love Song' originally be Paul Williams.
Elvis didn't write his own songs and he's the King.
That era still had very few bands who wrote their own songs. And just about every band did covers on their albums. Three dog night was able to make the more of them their own and hits
You should do some Leon Russell a Tulsa homeboy.
'Easy to be hard' is a must Three Dog Night song.
They had a bunch of hits back in the 70s like Joy To The World, Black And White to name a few.❤
My favorite by Three Dog Night is "Out In the Country"......not a rocker but very sweet and sentimental.....love it !
Love Out In The Country! One of their best.
This song has steel guitar for a few seconds, giving it something of a country flavor.
At their peak (early 70's), these guys put on amazing concerts. The Hammond blasting through the Leslie cabs is a sound missing from modern music.
Yep, there's nothing to match that Hammond B3 / Leslie sound.
Saw them in 1970. Awesome. The James Gang opened.
I've been a drummer for over 50 years, and Floyd Sneed, Three Dog Night's drummer, is the man I have fashioned my style after. I think he's soooo good!
When I saw the description, I knew what would happen when that y'all heard that line! The look on Amber's was absolutely priceless.
Love you guys❣️
Hey I was born in 1954 this is my generation MUSIC❤
Turned 16 years old 1970❤
Woodstock, Jimmy Hendrix, Janice Joplin so many more!
That was the time where music 🎵 painted the most beautiful picture.💕 I miss that.
Amen!!!
I love to see your smiling faces!!!!
Old Fashioned Love Song is one of their best and Eli's Coming is also awesome.
Finally I've requested this a few times because they reference Oklahoma 👍
Imagine You're Having A Picnic & You're Just Laying Back Watching The Clouds Go By While You Listen To This Truly Beautiful Classic,,
Three Dog Night "Out In The Country"
☁🌜🐕 🐕 🐕🌛☁
I love Three Dog Night, they were the very first band I saw in concert back in 1973, and the drummer threw his drum sticks intonthe audience behind him and I almost got one but a giy next to me grabbed it at the same time and took it. THey were amazing and the tickets were only 15.00 to see 3 bands play that night lol. Times sure have changed. Ty fir bringing back a great memory. Stay groovy and keep on keepin on ✌️❣️
They were my first concert as well!
My first concert too.. we have great taste!! Saw them many times after❤️
I love the way this song makes you feel. Sometimes it helps to know the lyrics.
Just saw them in concert last night. They’re still cranking out the hits! Shambala gave me chills!
I totally ENVY you. Music of my childhood ❤️
I got my grandparents to watch them on New Year's Rockin Eve with Dick Clark back in the early 70's. Grandpa's toe was tappin! Great band.
I was waiting for your reaction to "Well I never been to Heaven but I been to Oklahoma" You did not disappoint!
On another point, I sure do love the English language. So many words that rhyme that make for great songwriting.
Yes, this should be your anthem. And you should blast it from your car. Be loud and be proud!
Their songs 'One' and 'Liar' are great tunes along with the awesome rock ballad 'Pieces Of April' from '72.
The great Hoyt Axton. American songwriting legend. Hoyt was born in OK.
He said "I've never been to England, but I kinda like the Beatles"
Yeah they totally missed that
Back when I was still gigging with my bar band, this was a staple of our sets.
Love that bass groove.
The alternate single mixes rumble my floors. Bet you learned some cool harmonies doing TDN songs!
Schermie was one of my influences on my playing.
Written by Hoyt Axton. His mother was a teacher in Velma, OK. He also wrote Jeremiah was a bull frog.
All three took a verse/lines in this song. That was what made them great, three voices that can be very hard to distinguish from each other.
Love you, the song and your reactions. Just keep bringing your joy and love. We need it so much. Peace and God's blessings for you and yours.
This is great. Three dog night in a league of their own. Would love to see your reaction to Eli’s Coming. TY Jay and Amber.😊
Yes, especially the live 1975 version.
Yes indeed. Fabulous choice. 👍✌️🇨🇦
I just landed on your site by accident but I was listening to you & I'm probably one of those people 😅😅😅. I grew up with the music of the late 50, 60 & 70s. I loved the music because it was clean. You actually had to be able to sing..so many these days sound horrible without all the technology. Kudos to you for expanding your music knowledge. I love almost every genre from classical Beethoven to rock n roll. It's awesome. Learn everything you can. My playlist covers many decades of music 🎶🎵 Great show!!
The year was 1970… I went to see three dog night in person, only my second concert ever! One of my favorite groups and a great concert… Just great memories to hold onto
Made my day, I was blissfully born in Oklahoma, 1957, my dad was in Korean war, my parents moved when I was 6 months, really don't remember.
Pure old school Rock-n-Roll! Deep rabbit hole with Deep Purple!!!
Oh man! Flashback!! I hadn’t hard this since I grew up on the KS OK boarder back when this was my jam!!
I absolutely loved this song! Loved the band, but this song was so mellow rock I know I had this on 8 Track, and vinyl, now I need the digital!
HECK YEAH!! 👍😃❣️😃👍 3 DOG NIGHT❣️❣️ ❤️❤️❤️ THIS!!! I'M SO EXCITED!! 👍😃❣️😃👍
Great song, they had a slew of hits in the 70's. I suggest these other gems of theirs, "One is the loneliest number", "Out in the country", "Celebrate". "Pieces of April" ✨✨✨♥️
